Cara Thomas spent over 10 years inventing award-winning products for Fortune 100 companies. She found that adventure and playfulness led to breakthroughs. In need of that personally, she started Serenflipity as an experiment — and it ended up changing her life. It started with a one-way flight to Mumbai, and 90 challenges written by 90 friends, clients and strangers. Each day she flipped a card, followed its direction and blogged the tale. The results were surprising and serendipitous — and even included getting life-changing advice from Steven Tyler. Cara has launched Serenflipity to encourage that spirit of adventure into everyday life, anywhere in the world.

Today's guest, Cara Thomas, dared me to buy a coffee for the person in line behind me. I was terrified of the awkwardness and possible rejection - yet once I did it, felt truly alive. Cara created Serenflipity to spark that feeling in each of us after a seven year career as an innovation consultant. The simple flip of a card throws you into wonder and serendipity, feelings that often vanish as we "grow up." Cara's journey into entrepreneurship has (literally) taken her around the world and in this episode we discuss the importance of experiencing both positive and negative emotions, how the body breaks down when the mind breaks down, and why entrepreneurship is not for the faint-hearted. What if your friends gave you ideas to get you out of your comfort zone? That's exactly what happened on a trip for Cara Thomas, founder of SerenFlipity. Before a trip overseas, she collected 90 idea cards written by friends and acquaintances. Each card challenged her to get out of her comfort zone and do something out of the ordinary. What she discovered was something extraordinary: Ways to connect with strangers, explore unfamiliar territories, and discover strengths she didn't know she had. Today she shares her adventures and talks about how she created flip cards you can buy online. For more information, go to http://financially-blonde.com/mmpodcast

Cara Thomas was stuck. She was tired of her day job, her relationship had just ended, New York was wearing her out. She knew that life could be more than this, so like more and more people, she dropped it all and headed to Asia. She purchased a 1-way ticket to Mumbai, and did not look back. Prior to her departure, inspiration struck - ask her closest friends to give her small challenges to do along the way, enabling her to both pursue adventure but also invite serendipity and spontaneity into her daily experience. Since she loosely planned to be away for 90 days, she asked for (and received) 90 cards. These actions ranged from paying it forward by purchasing a treat for someone behind you in line to asking a stranger for a mantra. So, of course one of these led her to meeting Steven Tyler in a Bangkok hotel and the other...to connecting with us in a cafe in Ubud, Bali. We've been pals ever since, and we're honored to share her wonderfully organic entrepreneurial journey with you. She shares here how "Serenflipity" has naturally grown into a full-blown business, how travel helped her get unstuck in her life, her 90-day structure to life experiments and how serendipity is less “magic” and more a state of mind, available to anyone, anytime.
