Her debut novel, River East, River West, was shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2024, and her fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in Guernica, Best American Essays, The Florida Review online, and more. She has also co-authored and translated two books on Chinese politics and economics, and is the Deputy Editor at literary magazine Off Assignment.
In a special series direct from the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival Nam Le chats with Irma about why his first unpublished novel was a spectacular failure but still worthwhile, why for a long time he was a secret writer and the renowned Iowa Writers Workshop was him ‘coming out' to the world, how he naively thought the crazy success of The Boat was what all writers experienced, why Nam made a pact with himself that he would find the good in every publicity question, how his publisher felt about him wanting to publish a poetry collection – notoriously the smallest selling genre – and why he had to fight for the book in the US market, the ways in which he is wrestling with his cultural identity and the notion that he must represent a particular voice, why he puts so much pressure on himself as a writer, the good and the bad of the writers' room on film and TV projects, and how self-doubt can become damaging.ABOUT NAM LENam Le burst onto the literary scene in 2008 with his collection of short fiction, The Boat, which was translated into 14 languages and won every prize imaginable, including the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Prime Minister's Literary Award. It was also selected as a New York Times Notable Book and named book of the year by everyone from The Guardian to The Australian. Since then Nam has published a monograph, On David Malouf, as part of the Writers on Writers series, and most recently a collection of poetry, 36 Ways of Writing a Vietnamese Poem. He has also written for film and television.

Welcome to Season 9! We begin this new season with a mini, four-episode non-grad series highlighting guests whose work is harmonious with the work and ethos of the Hoffman Process. Our first non-grad guest is musician, activist, and award-winning filmmaker, Michael Franti.** As you listen to Michael's life story, you'll hear him speak of his feelings of abandonment and being an outsider. These feelings echo much of the work done during a week at the Hoffman Process. With eloquence and an open heart, he tells us his story of adoption, living with alcoholic parents, and what healing these wounds can look like. His life story is beautiful. As Michael says, you'll see what a generous gift it is to tell one's story. Originally recorded as part of an ongoing collaboration with Modern Elder Academy, Michael and Drew met in person in Santa Fe to record this conversation. Chip Conley, co-founder of MEA, chimes in at the end. This is a deep, fun, vulnerable conversation. We hope you enjoy it! **Please note that this episode is marked explicit for language and some content. Episode 146I recently had the pleasure of hosting my friend Dale on my podcast to discuss his favorite travel destination: Bali. Dale's been visiting Bali since 1979 and has seen the island evolve through every decade. From the bustling streets of Kuta to the serene landscapes of Ubud, Dale's experiences paint a vivid picture of this enchanting island, flavored with a pinch of humor and a dash of nostalgia.Dale's first visit to Bali in 1979 was nothing short of an adventure. The island was a hidden gem back then, not yet discovered by the masses. He landed in Kuta, which was still a sleepy fishing village with dirt roads and palm-thatched huts. Fast forward to today, and Kuta has transformed into the throbbing heart of Bali's tourist scene. Neon lights, thumping music, and surf shops line the streets. It's a paradise for surfers and party-goers, but also home to some of the island's best street food. Dale fondly recalls his first taste of nasi goreng from a street vendor, a dish so flavorful that it could bring tears to your eyes—either from the spice or sheer joy.Navigating Kuta's roads is an experience in itself. The streets are a chaotic ballet of motorbikes, cars, and pedestrians, all moving to their own rhythm. Dale's advice: keep your wits about you and don't be surprised if a chicken crosses the road—or a tourist on a rented scooter with no clue how to drive it.From Kuta, Dale's journeys often lead him to Ubud, Bali's cultural and spiritual center. Nestled amidst rice paddies and steep ravines, Ubud is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta. It's where you go to find inner peace, explore art galleries, and practice yoga with views that would make even the stiffest bodies feel zen. Dale describes Ubud as a place where time slows down. Here, you can wander through the Sacred Monkey Forest, visit ancient temples, and dine at organic cafes where the food is as Instagram-worthy as it is delicious.Bali's food scene is a culinary journey. From warungs (small family-owned eateries) offering traditional Balinese dishes like babi guling (suckling pig) to upscale restaurants serving fusion cuisine, there's something to tantalize every palate. Dale's top tip for foodies: always try the local dishes. “If it's got a name you can't pronounce, it's probably going to be amazing,” he jokes.Of course, no conversation about Bali would be complete without mentioning the people. Balinese hospitality is legendary. Dale speaks warmly of the locals' genuine friendliness and their uncanny ability to make visitors feel at home. Whether it's a hotel staff member going out of their way to help or a vendor at a market sharing a laugh, the people are what make Bali truly special. However, Bali isn't without its quirks. Dale notes the influx of poorly behaved Australian tourists over the years with a chuckle. “They come in droves, especially during school holidays.” While their antics can be a source of amusement, Dale emphasizes the importance of being respectful to local customs and traditions. In the end, Bali is an island of contrasts. It's where the chaos of Kuta meets the calm of Ubud, where traditional culture coexists with modern tourism, and where every trip offers something new to discover. Dale's decades of travel to Bali have given him a treasure trove of stories and experiences, each visit adding another layer to his love for the island. As our podcast wrapped up, one thing was clear: Bali isn't just a destination; it's a state of mind, one that captures the heart and soul of every traveler lucky enough to experience it.Music:America - A Horse with no NameCat Stevens - Wild WorldSupport the Show.Insta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

Elaine Reynolds has been a Master Personal Trainer for more than 20 years. She teaches women over 50 to not give up or give into the seemingly crazy things happening to their bodies. Elaine hit an exercise plateau in her 40s and wondered if that was just the way things would be for her in midlife. She felt that yoga was not enough for her to keep her muscles toned. She started experimenting with 20-minute workouts that incorporated low impact cardio, power yoga and pre- and post-workout stretching, and found her Zen. Her online programs, ZenStrength50plus and the ZenStrength50plus taste-test that she calls the Lengthen & Strengthen Your Body Program, give women a holistic and challenging way of training, with a planned system of body-shaping 20-minute online workouts and mindset shifting techniques. Elaine designs workouts that won't wreck you but will give you toned muscles and flexibility. She maintains that working out is 80% mindset, so her workouts are layered with mindset training. "Intentional workouts," Elaine says, will build confidence and make one's body stronger and less achy. She encourages her clients to build positivity clues into their days to reflect their goals. Twice Elaine has sold all of her possessions to follow her dream to be an expat. Eight years ago, at age 50, she had an epiphany and brought a one-way ticket to Bali! After stints in Italy, India, New Zealand and Australia, Bali now feels like home to Elaine. You can find her cycling through the villages of Ubud or at a cafe with a cappuccino in hand. Elaine appreciates the power of now. "Even a boring day can be a beautiful moment," Elaine declares with joy!
