Alan Parker's musical-drama exploded the careers of Irene Cara, Gene Anthony Ray and others, and – thanks to the hit TV series that followed – earned a reputation as a fluffy tale of leg warmers and sweatbands. But underneath the choreographed routines, will this warts-and-all depiction of life at the New York School of Performing Arts prove TOO MUCH for Jen and Mick? And what is a hot lunch, anyway? This is an Encore Presentation of my March 2022 interview with Elliott Randall, one of the greatest guitarists of the Rock era. His solos on Steely Dan's hit “Reelin' In The Years” and Irene Cara's “Fame” are iconic. Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, The Blues Brothers and Toto all asked him to join their bands. He's been a first-call session musician including jingles. I'm pleased to say that Elliott has collaborated with me on two releases: “The Fall Of Winter” (Spotify link), and “The Rich Ones All Stars” (Spotify link). My featured song is “Right Now”. 8 Movies again, annnnnnnd here goes. 1. (Halls of Anger 1970) Calvin Lockhart, a young Jeff Bridges and Janet MacLachlan star in this serious look at racism and teaching. Ed Asner makes yet another appearance too. 2. (Skin Game 1971) Same director here as the first movie. Rockford Files and Iron Eagle star with Mom from Webster in yet another film having a heavy dialogue about racism. This one tries to Trojan horse it in with some comedy, does it work, let's see. Oh look, Ed Asner. 3. (Aaron loves Angela 1975) Where the heck is Ed Asner, sigh. Gordon Parks jr. directs this rad 70's film lookin at young love and race, using Romeo and Juliet as a basic template. Irene Cara is in the house. 4.(Hard Times 1975) Warriors director Walter Hill is here, making a film where James Coburn needs to not gamble so much, damn, There's Charles Bronson and boxing too. Bronson is glowing and so expressive, an amazing on screen presence, NOT. 5. (Special Day 1977) Oh my, Italian cinema can be tricky, at least the 70's Italian films that we have seen which are few, but whoa, tricky is a too nice way of saying there's disgusting treatment of women in these films. This film, though not perfect, is an exception, and with some unexpected queer content. Sophia Loren is here, as well as Marcello Mastroianni (who appears to be in every Italian film ever) oh also the dean from Animal House. Special Day is directed by Ettore Scola. Pretty epic stuff. 6.(Skateboard the movie 1978) Silly, dumb, quickly made cash grab about Skateboarding, that I really like and even own the soundtrack. If you like the subject, and fun B movies, this is a win for me, let us tell you all about it. You might have more fun listening with the commentary track on, which means you'd have to buy it, and if yer that interested, you probably already have it. Teen heart throb Leif Garret is here and is the only one who can't skate great. Here also is Kathleen Lloyd of The Car. 7. (The Outsider 1979) Heavy film here about the troubles. It sure got some great images on film in Northern Ireland. Brits out! 8. (Penitentiary 1979) This is final film of rad director Jamaa Fanaka that we get to review. Here Sweet Pea tries to survive prison. Please see also Emma Mae 1976. ok enjoy the show, thanks for listening.

While Devo is known as an early 80's new wave synth pop band, their history goes back to 1973. The classic lineup of Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, Bob Casale, and Alan Myers developed the name Devo from "De-evolution," the idea that mankind is regressing to a herd mentality. This was a bit of a joke idea that Gerald Casale and co-founder Bob Lewis formed while at Kent State University. The band gained some local fame in 1976, and were signed to Warner Brothers in 1978 with recommendations from David Bowie and Iggy Pop.Freedom of Choice is Devo's third studio album and their breakout commercial success. While their first two albums had generated some following, the commercial success was not at the level Warner Brothers sought, and the third album was considered a "make or break," one with the studio ready to drop the group. Success did follow this album, with Devo exploiting the upcoming popularity of new wave while drifting a little bit towards R&B and funk sensibilities within their synth-pop framework. The album was recorded and mixed in six weeks, with bass, guitars, and drums being recorded together live, and with synthesizers and vocals being overdubbed later. The album peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200, and the big single, "Whip It," reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.Rob brings us this synthisizer-driven new wave album for this week's foray into the early 80's.Freedom of ChoiceThie post-punk title song initially sounds like it is about freedom of choice. However, it is really about people not really having freedom of choice. Consumerism - choosing between green sneakers and blue sneakers for example - isn't really choice at all. "Freedom of choice is what you got. Freedom from choice is what you want."Whip ItEveryone knows this signature Devo song. Mark Mothersbaugh has stated that the song was written as a subtle Dale Carnegie-esque message to Jimmy Carter, saying "you can do it." The song benefitted greatly from airplay on the fledgling cable channel MTV, where their strange video involving a guy knocking the clothes off a girl with a bullwhip received continual play.Gates of SteelThe lead song from side 2 is a bit of a commentary on the mechanization of humanity. No matter how much we believe mankind has accomplished, we're not far removed from the ape. "A man is real, not made of steel."Girl U WantThis was the first single released from the album, though it did not chart well. The song was supposedly inspired by The Knack, though the track reminds us more of The Cars. "She's just the girl, she's just the girl, the girl you want." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Fame by Irene Cara (from the motion picture “Fame”)Irene Cara sings the theme song and stars in this teen musical drama about students auditioning to study at the High School of Performing Arts. STAFF PICKS:Crazy Little Thing Called Love by QueenLynch's staff pick is a song inspired by Elvis Presley. Freddie Mercury wrote the song lyrics in about 10 minutes, and the band created the song in about 30 minutes. Mercury played lead guitar for the original stuido recording. It was the first number 1 hit that Queen had on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Cars by Gary NumanWayne brings us the signature song from Gary Numan. It was inspired by an incident of road rage Numan experienced in London, where he had to lock his doors and drive on the sidewalk to avoid getting attacked. He was safe in his car, and inspired to write a song in about 30 minutes. It is a signature song of the New Wave genre, and there are no guitars in this track. Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer) by Roky EricksonBruce features a strange hard rock song with lyrics inspired by Soviet scientist Vladimir Demikhov. Demikhov's research focusted on organ transplants, and he conducted dog head transplants in the 1950's. This song is off Erickson's debut album with his band the Aliens, and is considered a cult classic. Call Me by Blondie Rob finishes the staff picks with a hit that feaured in the film "American Gigolo." It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks, the biggest hit of Blondie's career. Lead vocalist Debbie Harry wrote the lyrics from the perspective of the main character in the film, a male prostitute. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Airlane by Gary NumanWe close out with a double dip on new wave synth artist Gary Numan this week. Another quick fill-in show? You bet! We're flipping through three old comic books that the Mayor of Chickentown actually owned as a little kid, decades before her rise to poultry-themed political bigwig. Up first is The Wizard of Oz, a giant-sized movie adaptation that was actually the first collaboration between Marvel and DC! (Only a flying monkey could bring these rival publishers together.) We also have an issue of Spidey Super Stories, which was published in conjunction with Spider-Man's segments on The Electic Company. And we even have a Casper the Friendly Ghost comic with a creepy Eddie Munster-type demon child on the cover. Plus: Spider-Man goes to the mall! Richie Rich dies! Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader! Irene Cara and Short Circus! Wendy and Spooky! Sad Sack selling Hostess Cupcakes! And more comic book ads for Grit, onion gum, Witchiepoo masks, and The Bad News Bears! Emilio, Madeline, and Julian continue their High School Movies cycle with a "Mise-Unseen" entry on Alan Parker's 1980 classic, "Fame." Coincidentally a film that none of the trio had seen previously, they look in depth at its ensemble-based depiction of a full four years at New York City's High School of the Performing Arts. Amidst their many talking points, Julian brings a unique perspective to the film as the native New Yorker of the group, while Emilio spins a discussion from the film's "Rocky Horror Picture Show" sequence, and Madeline grades the vowels of every choir singer we see on screen. All three also continue relating their own high school experiences to those shown in the film, and revel in the details of its iconic "Hot Lunch Jam" and street-dancing sequences. They hope it'll be the best experience possible, but whatever you think, one thing's for sure: they just wanna dance! This week we get to hear from acclaimed songwriter Dean Pitchford! After 45 years of near consistent success, Dean will finally be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, which is just another line on his impressive resume. He won an Oscar for writing "Fame" for Irene Cara and achieved the absolute peak with Footloose. He not only wrote the screenplay, but every song on the soundtrack and collected a couple Grammys in the process. He tried again a few years later with the movie Sing, but it was less successful and his thoughts on why are fascinating. Along the way there have been collaborations with Roger Daltrey ("Quicksilver Lightning"), Cher ("After All"), Peter Allen ("The Boy From Oz"), Kenny Loggins ("Don't Fight It"), writing the Solid Gold theme song, and tons more. He's just about the nicest man you'll ever meet and we're super lucky to hear from him. Enjoy! www.deanpitchford.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Elliott Randall is one of the greatest guitarists of the Rock era. His solos on Steely Dan's hit “Reelin' In The Years” and Irene Cara's “Fame” are nothing short of iconic. To the uninitiated, it might seem like Elliott has made a career out of saying no to great opportunities. Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, The Blues Brothers and Toto all asked him to join their bands and he said no. But Elliot is different. He has always trusted his intuition. Known as one of the greatest session musicians around, he's the man behind that renowned Reelin' In The Years Steely Dan solo (which is said to be Jimmy Page's favourite ever lead guitar break) among literally hundreds, if not thousands, of other cuts. He also continues to write, produce, consult, engineer, tutor and perform to this day. In this interview we turn back the clock to learn about his upbringing in NYC and his passion for music ignited at a young age. During his formative years, Elliott immersed himself in the vibrant musical culture of the 50s and 60s. He took guitar lessons, honed his skills and his dedication caught the attention of instructors and peers alike. By the time he had ended his teens, Elliott had already been a pro' player for four or five years. In 1967, Musicor Records (who gave the world Gene Pitney) offered him a role as a Staff Musician. He then joined the roots fusion act Seatrain briefly in 1969, and signed as a solo artist, releasing his debut album in 1970. It was the death of his good friend Jimi Hendrix that helped Elliott realise he didn't need to be the rockstar or the centre of attention so he began working with other artists and clients, providing solutions for their musical and commercial success. The most well known four-and-a-half minutes of his guitar life became the lead breaks he added to Steely Dan's megahit Reelin' In The Years in 1972. It has received acclaim from other players and audiences alike. Since then Elliott Randall has played with Joan Baez, Chuck Berry, Kate Bush, The Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, Art Garfunkel, Albert Hammond, Bob Marley, Yoko Ono, Gene Simmons, Loudon Wainright III, Gary Barlow of Take That fame, and many, many more. He has also soundtracked jingles for some of world's biggest brands including Coca-Cola, Budweiser, McDonald's, Citi Bank, Procter & Gamble, MTV, ESPN and BBC TV. He's also performed for musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway, and has been a musical consultant for Saturday Night Live and the film director Oliver Stone. Elliott's passion for music continues unabated today. His story is fascinating and I hope you will enjoy every minute of it. Our chapter gives both a "kinnah" - a lament, and a "Nehi" - a dirge, for the demise of Egypt. The Nehi mocks Egypt's place in the She'ol, the Underworld; Egypt would have been particularly concerned about life after death, and here she discovers that she shares an inglorious, impure place in the Afterlife. We discuss the theme of Immortality with an eye to Channukah which we are currently celebrating. Music - "Fame" - Irene Cara
In this episode we will tell the story of a long haired hippy with a dream to do something spectacular. With the help of his talented friends and against the powers of the land he made that dream into a reality. Then thousands of years later 2 middle class British toffs turned that story into a multi hundred million dollar enterprise with a Hollywood film, a lavish stage show and the epitome of 70s culture the concept double album. How did a 24 year old Tim Rice, an assistant producer in the record industry and 21 year old composer Andrew Lloyd Webber end up with a hit single, hit album, hit stage show and hit movie? And how was this potentially blasphemous production received by the Chri$tian world? This episode features special guest star appearances from Olympic Studios, London, The Rolling Stones, Sympathy for the Devil, MCA, The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technocolour Dreamcoat, Bob Dylan, With God on Our Side, Judas Iscariot, Roman Empire, Rome, Romans, Roman Emperor, Billy Graham, Samuel L. It's a new season and a new series as we head to the 80's this time instead of the 90's and catch up on a number of movies we need to discuss. This week, we're talking about a truly groundbreaking, influential film. It's one thing to say that, it's another to watch spiritual (and literal) sequels or remakes get made of this story, over and over again. And yet this 1980 classic is rough, raw, but still very engaging, partially because of its novelty. No, it's not great, and its 2009 remake is maybe one of the worst movies we've watched for this show. Yet it's almost a requirement to see this movie about the pressure of young creatives searching for their golden ticket. Settle in and make sure your audition is ready as we talk about Fame this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Pakistan's ousted prime minister, Imran Khan, has addressed a huge rally of his supporters in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi. It was his first public appearance since being shot and injured at a rally three weeks ago. Our correspondent Samira Hussein was there. Also in the programme: as Ukraine marks 90 years since the great famine, known as the Holodomor, we ask whether it was deliberate policy by the Soviet leadership; and we pay tribute to the singer Irene Cara, most famous for the film, "Fame", who has died at the age of 63. I've been working so hard, and when there's nothing but a slow aching pain, sometimes you just gotta DANCE! What '80s movie theme makes you want to get down and boogie harder, Kenny Loggins's "Footloose" or Irene Cara's "Flashdance...What a Feeling"?
