Episode 3192: Ross Enamait explores how foundational strength developed through general training can elevate performance across a range of athletic pursuits, even those requiring highly specific skills. His insights challenge the belief that sport-specific training is the only path to improvement, making a compelling case for the versatility and transferability of raw strength. Read along with the original article(s) here: http://rosstraining.com/blog/2016/03/16/strength-building-beyond-specificity/ Quotes to ponder: "General strength can serve as a tremendous asset to the specialist." "The idea that athletes must only train in ways that mimic their sport is incredibly short sighted." "If you possess a high level of general strength, you will be better equipped to develop and display more specialized strength when necessary." Learn more about your ad choices. In this heartfelt episode, we sit down with our very own Bob as he opens up about his personal journey with prostate cancer. With honesty, courage and hope, he tells us about the first signs, the initial diagnosis, and the emotional and physical challenges of treatment and recovery. Bob shares the highs and lows, the lessons that came with uncertainty, and how this experience reshaped his outlook on wellness and purpose. This is more than a story of illness; it's one of resilience, awareness, and inspiration. Bob's journey is a powerful reminder that vulnerability can lead to strength, and that every story shared can help someone else heal. Whether you're navigating your own health challenges, supporting someone who is, or simply want to better understand men's health, we hope this conversation offers understanding, encouragement, and a reminder that you're not alone. Why do you exercise? It might be to lose weight, maintain or improve your health, reduce stress, or perhaps a combination of all of these. But what is actually motivating you is simpler than that. As Dr. Gary Wenk reveals in his book "Your Brian on Exercise", you exercise because your brain needs you to move, and it will do everything it can to motivate you to do it. He provides fascinating insights into exactly what is happening to our brains when we go jogging, lift weights, swim laps, or take a walk, as well as what happens when we don't. He'll also answer questions we all have about exercise vs diet to lose weight and perhaps, most importantly, how much exercise is enough. When we lead a conversation where we only bring our conclusions and inferences to the table, rather than the concrete data that helped lead us there, we are influencing (sometimes unjustly) what is even discussable among our teams. By going back down to discussing the data that helped us shape those conclusions, we can make conversations and meetings more fair, more equal, and more productive. Workout of the week: Note when you have gone up the ladder of inference to a conclusion about a person and perhaps lost track of the data that led you there. Then, go back down and incorporate the data into an observation. Example: “She was defensive” is an inference or conclusion. Go back down the ladder to the data and turn it into an observation: “I observed that she crossed her arms and said, ‘I don't know,' twice.” Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/72gzzWGegiXd9i2G6UJ0kP Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-center-for-medical-simulation/id1279266822 Leadership Coaching from Jenny Rudolph: https://harvardmedsim.org/personal-leadership-coaching-with-jenny-rudolph/

Jarek Berga - November 9th 2025 You're already training for something — the question is, what goal are you straining toward? This week, Jarek pauses our King and His Kingdom series to share from 1 Timothy 4:6–11, a message birthed in prayer about what it truly means to “train yourself for godliness.” Using Paul's athletic metaphor, Jarek explores how spiritual formation, like physical training, requires diet and exercise — being nourished by the Word and strengthened through discipline. He contrasts legalism (trying to earn God's love) with training (responding to His love), inviting us to examine what we're ultimately living for. Whether you're in a season of growth or recovery, this message calls us to a life of perseverance, love, and purpose — straining toward the crown that lasts forever. Very unique show this week as Joe had to record the podcast from his truck in the parking lot of a hospital (during his dad's shoulder replacement surgery!) But, there is still a ton of value (and entertainment) packed into this episode :) Joe kicks off the show with a funny "pre-surgery George D. story" and a "MuscleUpNovember" supplement sale reminder before getting into the training talk. Specifically, this week's show is a follow-up from last week's episode on "high volume vs high intensity". Joe answers 2 follow-up questions from his audience then explains exactly how to "get the best of both worlds" (high volume AND high intensity) in a single workout/program. He shares 2 specific training templates that combine high volume WITH high intensity in order to create the "perfect workout"! *For a full list of Show Notes with Timestamps visit www.IndustrialStrengthShow.com. Today's episode is a really fun one — I got to sit down with Augie Duke to talk about her work on The Workout, but like all good conversations, we ended up going everywhere. We talk about the fear that creeps in when you become a parent, the joy and tragedy of video stores, pets, and a bunch of other beautifully random things along the way. Now, full disclosure — this one's got some real-life texture to it. Augie's Wi-Fi drops out here and there, so there are a few abrupt edits, and I had the office door open because, you know, life happens — the dogs are making noise, one of my kids and the love of my life walk by. It's a bit chaotic… and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way.So settle in, embrace the imperfections, and enjoy this conversation with Augie Duke.

How long does it really take to feel the benefits of strength training? In this first episode of a two-part series, Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher explore the benefits of strength training. They break the question into two parts: the immediate changes you'll feel right away and the longer-term adaptations that build strength, focus, and resilience over time. Expect to walk away with a deeper understanding of how strength training transforms not just your body, but your energy, mindset, and everyday performance. Dr. Fisher starts by explaining the instant and long-term rewards of strength training. The moment you start lifting, your body begins responding with powerful benefits like sharper focus and a better mood. And over time, those sessions compound into stronger muscles, better energy, and a more resilient body. Amy and Dr. Fisher break down one of the body's hidden superpowers: myokines. These small proteins get released during strength training and travel throughout your body, supporting your brain, organs, and overall well-being. Dr. Fisher highlights how a single strength session can lift your mood and sharpen your mind. Research shows that after finishing a workout, most people feel clearer, calmer, and more alert. It's one of the simplest ways to reset mentally after a stressful day. According to Dr. Fisher, strength training before something big, like an interview or exam, can actually improve memory and focus. Instead of skipping your workout to read, he suggests doing it to help your brain work better under pressure. You walk in feeling grounded, confident, and ready to perform. Amy points out how many people struggle with brain fog and mental fatigue. But just twenty minutes of strength training can bring clarity, focus, and a sense of energy that lasts all day. Dr. Fisher shares how high-effort strength training helps reduce pain perception. It means your body literally becomes more tolerant of discomfort, both physically and mentally. Over time, you don't just get stronger, you feel more capable of handling life's challenges. Dr. Fisher talks about how strength training increases energy expenditure for up to 48 hours afterward and how your body keeps burning calories long after you've left the gym. He adds that this benefit doesn't happen with regular cardio. Sure, a run burns calories in the moment, but strength training keeps the fire going for two more days. Dr. Fisher explains that strength training also boosts muscle protein synthesis. That means your body starts repairing and building new muscle tissue long after the workout ends. By engaging in strength training, you're not just maintaining what you have — you're actively creating a stronger, healthier version of yourself. Dr. Fisher reminds us why consistency matters so much. Every workout is an opportunity for your body to respond, adapt, and grow stronger. Skipping sessions means missing out on the positive signals your body needs to keep performing at its best. Amy encourages you to think twice the next time you feel tempted to skip the gym. That small 20-minute session could be exactly what turns your day around. Dr. Fisher notes that these benefits don't take months to show up. The body responds immediately, even after a single workout. So if you're waiting to "feel ready," the best time is actually right now. Dr. Fisher shares that working with a strength coach can help you gain the most out of your strength training sessions. Sometimes it's not about pushing harder, but learning how to train smarter, with the right form, effort, and recovery. Having a personal trainer in your corner keeps you accountable and helps you discover just how strong you really are. Amy says that a personal trainer helps you show up on the days you wouldn't do it alone. And those are the days your body needs it most, when stress is high, energy is low, and your brain could use that endorphin lift. Amy and Dr. Fisher cover how strength training builds confidence. You begin noticing small wins — lifting more, moving better, feeling capable. That quiet confidence often spills over into how you show up at work, home, and in relationships. How to look at exercise differently: strength training teaches discipline, resilience, and patience — qualities that serve far beyond the gym. Every session is a reminder of what your body can do. Amy closes by reminding us that strength training is one of the few things in life that gives immediate returns. For example, you walk in tired and walk out more alive.
