David Jamieson and Cat Boyd, writers and hosts of Conter, the Scottish anti-capitalist website and podcast, join us to to talk about the prospects for Scottish independence in advance of the Scottish parliamentary elections in May. Would an independent Scotland within the EU be a contradiction in term? How would an independent Scotland fare - and what would it mean for the "national question" across Europe? And what's up with the factional strife among Scottish nationalists? Last week, on October 28, Boris Johnson—the British prime minister who said he would “rather be dead in a ditch” than request another Brexit extension from the European Union—requested and received such an extension from the European Union, making this the third time that Brexit has been delayed since the June 2016 referendum. In anticipation of the deadline, the Harper's Podcast convened four experts and participants in U.K. politics—David Renton, James Foley, Cat Boyd, and Richard Seymour—to discuss the complex political landscape of Brexit, its possible implications for different sectors of the population, and the hope that may lie in the situation's vast and continuing uncertainties. This forum is an extension of a conversation between socialist writer Ashley Smith and University of Glasgow professor Neil Davidson that was published in New Politics. An excerpt from that interview was reprinted in the October issue of Harper's Magazine. The episode was co-moderated by Smith and Harper's web editor Violet Lucca. Cat Boyd is a trade-union organizer in Glasgow. James Foley is a postdoctoral researcher at Glasgow Caledonian University and the author of a forthcoming book on Scottish independence, which will be published by Verso in 2020. David Renton is a barrister, historian, and long-standing anti-fascist activist. Richard Seymour is a founding editor of Salvage magazine and author of The Twittering Machine. His writings can be read on Patreon. Beyond the Noise with David Jamieson is a weekly podcast with CommonSpace journalist David Jamieson, where he gets behind the 24/7 news cycle and gets to heart of issues, trying to find the substance behind the headlines. In a special live edition of the podcast at Dounne the Rabbit Hole festival, David Jamieson, activist and writer Cat Boyd and a festival audience discuss identity, alienation and individualism in the modern west and Scotland. They discuss: 1:45 - What does the increase of mental ill-health tell us about the state of modern alienation? 8:55 - The importance of the decline of religious belief for the rise of individualism. 33:00 - How social movements like the 2014 independence referendum provide people with a glimpse of a non-alienated society. 45:25 - What Scotland's problem with addiction tells us about the failure of the political system to address fundamental social problems.

This day early podcast is brought to you courtesy of my gallivanting off to Wales tomorrow(Thursday) morning. Lesley returns to the continuing story of land ownership in Scotland and the rights (or lack of them) of tenant farmers. Labour's Scottish conference in Dundee and the potential rebellion of Kezia Dugdale and Ian Murray leads us down the byways of speculation over Brexit, Labour's squaring of electoral circles north and south of the border and allotments (trust me it made sense at the time). Plus, I have my say on Labour voting independence supporters, like Cat Boyd. A beautifully written article in Bella Caledonia by Clare Galloway allows us to discuss the role, impact, and cost of alcohol in Scotland. We ask will Sky come to regret its poll on the most influential women in British history as Nicola Sturgeon and Mhairi Black lie first and third with only two hours left to vote? Tomorrow is International Women's Day and we finish with reflections on Mhairi Black's passionate, articulate, and deeply personal speech on misogyny at Westminster earlier today.
Another mass shooting in the US prompts renewed calls for tougher vetting on Gun ownership - but President Trump doesn't agree. We take a look at the reluctance, not just to take action, but even to talk about reforming US firearm regulations amongst the country's lawmakers. This Sunday is remembrance day - We look back at the conflicts which gave birth to the Poppy appeal, and ask whether that symbol has been politicised in recent years. We speak to the columnist and trade unionist Cat Boyd about what she calls “compulsory poppy lobbyists”. Edinburgh's usher hall was indeed full to the brim last Saturday, with members of the Scottish independence Movement, and we'll have a special report on the Scottish independence convention's building bridges to yes event. Another week, and another cabinet minister down for Theresa May - where does the sharp fall from grace for Priti Patel fit into the ongoing disaster that is Theresa May's premiership? And… Could BBC Radio 4's ‘The Archers' Parish council election POSSIBLY be referencing real world events? A recent General election perhaps? All that and more on this week's programme.

For the 92nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I spoke to Cat Boyd from the Radical Independence Campaign. We expressed our joy at the arrival of the party leaders coming up from down south to tell us all what to think.Well, no, we didn't, but we talked about what effect this might have on the campaign and if we think their desperate promises of more powers will be believed. We talked about the diversity of one campaign and the homogeneity of the other. Can you guess which was which? Finally, as ever, I asked my guest their personal reasons for supporting Scottish Independence.Hope you enjoy…
The 68th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast comes from a recent yes event in Motherwell with thank to Independence Live, who are making a great job of filming these events).Scotland is full of Independence events at the moment, and the Yes campaign is reaching many many communities around Scotland.Obviously however, it is not possible for everyone to go to every meeting, and it is not possible for some to go to any meetings, so I think it is important to spread the ones that are recorded around as much as possible. In that spirit, mixed in with the interviews in the normal podcasts and For A' That series, I hope to be bringing you more podcasts of events around Scotland too.At this particular event, the speakers were firstly Robin McAlpine, in fine angry form. He was followed by Cat Boyd and finally Jim Sillars had the chance to explain his ideas without George Galloway repeating the same sentence at him ad infinitum.Hope you enjoy…LINKShttp://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/https://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttps://twitter.com/kittycatboydhttps://twitter.com/NaeFearhttps://twitter.com/ReidFoundation
This episode is, as I was informed by probably incorrect social commentators, what the kids used to call a "mash-up" about fifteen years ago.BJKX5rSCEAA3MmY.jpg largeThere is a bit of campaigning around the subject of International Worker's Day itself, musical breaks from Dick Gaughan, David Rovics and others. There are also pieces from Noam Chomsky, Christina McKelvie MSP, Cat Boyd, Kevin Williamson, Doug Daniel and Angus Robertson MP.I won't say anymore.Hope you enjoy...LINKShttps://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttps://twitter.com/williamsonkevhttps://twitter.com/drovicshttp://www.dickgaughan.co.uk/https://twitter.com/MorayMPhttps://twitter.com/ChristinaSNPhttps://twitter.com/kittycatboydhttp://www.chomsky.info/
