Zapraszam ! Kata were Insignificant in Historical Warring Japan w/ Dr. Raul Sanchez Garcia

Today I'm joined by Dr. Raul Sanchez Garcia, a sport science lecturer at the University Politécnica of Madrid, Spain, martial artist, and Ecological Dynamics thinker. Most researchers in the ecological approach come from a psychology background. Dr. Garcia is unique in that he approaches Ecological Dynamics from the vantage point of ethnography, which is the systematic study of peoples and their cultures. In that vein, he wrote a fantastic social history on the development of Japanese martial arts. In this episode, Dr. Garcia walks us through the historic significance of kata based on his research. Or rather, how it was not significant -- or at least not ubiquitous -- in the war-torn pre-restoration periods of Japan. Rather, it is only after war becomes a less common part of life that kata rises in popularity as a training tool. Kata-heads will no doubt be scandalized at this revelation, as will traditionalists from other styles. But even if you're a non-traditional martial artist, this information will be interesting and useful for your own understanding of the current training landscape. This isn't just about kata: it's about any sort of rote training modality. ---Join the email list now: combatlearning.com/newsletter---Produced by Micah PeacockIntro Theme by Micah PeacockOutro Music is Synergy by Juche

Today I'm joined by Matt Phili, a mobility training coach and founder of Primal Mobility. Whether a grappler or striker, most martial artists need greater mobility. However, most of the mobility routines you see around Instagram really won't cut it, and stretching isn't necessarily good mobility work either -- at least on its own. In this episode, Matt unpacks his approach to mobility training: not simply as a stretching routine, but as an approach to strength in progressively deeper ranges of motion. Primal Mobility is unique in that it feels more like accessory exercises in a strength program than a stretching protocol, including sets and reps. In the second half of the episode, we dive into more grappling and striking-specific advice on building and maintaining mobility. Topics include guard-play and guard retention, bridging, as well as higher, more powerful kicks. Finally, we discuss the importance of training outside of neutral spine and in compromised positions to help prevent injuries during the course of real life combat sports performance. A quick note, Matt doesn't come from an Ecological Dynamics or CLA framework. I've had other guests on that aren't ecological before, but I haven't done a good job of making that clear. --- Join the newsletter now: https://combatlearning.com/newsletter --- Where to find Matt... This episode is a little different in that I just introduce a series that I am planning to develop.  In this series, I will look at, compare, and contrast different types of communism.  Communism, like so many other broad topics in history, is not a monolith.  There is variation and change, and there are many different manifestations of communist ideology, with the most well-known ones being Soviet Stalinism and Chinese Maoism.  There are other forms of communism as well, such as Ho Chi Minh Thought, Juche, and the forms of communism that governed Yugoslavia, Cambodia, and Albania.  There are even communist parties in Canada and the United States. I want to look deeper into these ideologies.  While I won't promise to look at all these variations of communist thought, I certainly plan to look into them and see how they were similar to and different from each other.  What were their impacts on history?  What framework should I use to analyze them?  Take a listen to this episode to find out!

Yeonmi Park had little or no education before escaping North Korea. When she began studying at Columbia university, she was shocked by the similarities between the indoctrination taking place in American universities and the propaganda she experienced in the North Korean dictatorship. Having escaped North Korea, Yeonmi Park has a deep appreciation for American liberty and wants to remind us of the fragility of freedom, and what we must do to preserve it while time remains. For more information on receiving her books While Time Remains: A North Korean Defector's Search for Freedom in America and In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom please click here. https://www.equip.org/product/cri-resource-while-time-remains-a-north-korean-defectors-search-for-freedom-in-america-and-in-order-to-live-a-north-korean-girls-journey-to-freedom/Topics discussed include: Why is Yeonmi Park thankful to have been born in North Korea? Look at a map of the Korean Peninsula at night.  In the southern half of the peninsula, you will see pockets of bright lights denoting South Korea's cities and population centers.  In the northern part, you will see an expanse of a dark expanse with the occasional tiny light.  That's not an ocean or other body of water.  That's North Korea, an absolute dictatorship and one of, if not the most, isolated countries on Earth.  How did this happen?  Does North Korea have a Constitution? What is the relationship between the people and their government?  What role does “juche” play in the lives of North Koreans?  To help us understand this country, we are pleased to welcome Suzanne Scholte.  Suzanne is a noted human rights activist, president of the Defense Forum Foundation is the vice co-chair of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea.  Thank you for joining Suzanne and our student panel for this eye-opening discussion on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

For decades, North Korea has stressed the virtues of self-reliance, eschewing more robust ties with the outside world in favor of greater autonomy, even at significant cost to its economy. Founding leader Kim Il Sung championed this Korean-style autarky under the name Juche, and this ideology of self-reliance and national sovereignty found a receptive audience in some parts of the world, in particular among member states of the Non-Aligned Movement. Alhassan Mamman Muhammad is one of those who became a believer in North Korea's state ideology. The leader of a Nigerian committee promoting Juche, he joins the NK News podcast to discuss why he has embraced the DPRK's political ideals, how the Non-Aligned Movement inspired him and others to embrace Juche, how this relates to the legacies of colonialism on the African continent and more.  Muhammad is chairman of the Nigerian National Committee on the Study of Juche Idea and a professor at the University of Abuja in Nigeria. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot (@JaccoZed) exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

This event was streamed live at The Institute of World Politics, D.C. on Thursday, October 13, 2022. About the Lecture In the world of espionage, North Korea remains one of the hardest targets as it remains the most reclusive and enigmatic communist regime on the planet. The question remains, then, how did North Korea develop its Modus Operandi (M.O.) in order to achieve its ultimate foreign policy goal? – which is the “revolutionization” of South Korea through reunification under Kim Jong Un. In this lecture, first, North Korea's exploitation of its unique Juche ideology as a tool of indoctrination will be discussed – specifically, North Korea's totalitarian and monolithic dictatorial system, known as suryong, meaning Supreme Leader, will be assessed. Second, the evolution of North Korea's conduct of espionage during and after the Cold-War will be highlighted, including traditional espionage operations – recruitment of South Koreans – as well as special operations, such as terrorist attacks. Third, several cases of North Korea's exploitation of its intelligence officers will be addressed – those who were brainwashed to sacrifice their lives for the sake of the regime until their defection to the U.S. or South Korea to pursue their life of freedom. About the Speaker Dr. Amanda Jihyun Won recently graduated from The Institute of World Politics' (IWP) Doctor of Statecraft and National Security (DSNS) program, and has been serving as Director of the China Asia Program at IWP since September 2022. Amanda is also the founder of IWP's Asia Initiative Lecture Series (AILS) through which diverse scholar-practitioners have presented their expertise on Asia. Amanda also holds an M.P.S. in Arts and Cultural Management from the Pratt Institute in New York and an M.A. in Government (with a specialization in National Security Studies) from Johns Hopkins University. Her professional experience includes having worked in both the NGO and government sectors, serving as a legislative assistant at the New York City Council and as a Diplomatic & Consular Affairs and Partnership intern at the New York City Mayor's Office for International Affairs. She has also worked at the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) where she was a contributor to that organization's publication: The Parallel Gulag: North Korea's “An-Jeon-Bu” Prison Camps. Dr. Won will also be teaching a course at IWP on the topic of North Korean Espionage starting in the Spring Semester of 2023. Growing up in Kobe, Park Hyangsu lived in a world apart from most of the Japanese people around her. At school, her teachers spoke Korean. In the classroom, portraits of North Korean leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il hung on the walls. For educational field trips, students traveled to the DPRK. This week, Park joins the NK News podcast to discuss her family's life inside Chongryon, the pro-DPRK organization of ethnic Koreans in Japan that acts as Pyongyang's de facto embassy to Tokyo. She shares about her experience receiving Juche ideological education in school, the tragic story of her uncle who moved to the DPRK, how her family distanced itself from the organization and how she now speaks up for people like her family members who have been imprisoned and tortured in North Korea. Park Hyangsu (@HyangsuPark and @baglekang) is a North Korea human rights activist and a Zainichi Korean now living in South Korea. In this episode, Jake and Jim speak with the UK delegate for the Korean Friendship Association (KFA) to discuss and dispel some misconceptions about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The KFA is an organization that promotes cultural exchanges and provides education on the DPRK to members in their respective countries. With this in mind, we asked Dermot to explain several overwhelming trends in the US including demonstrably fake news about the DPRK, the DPRK's emphasis on self-defense, self-reliance, and anti-imperialism, and the future of western policy towards Pyongyang. Jake also asks several questions concerning the case of Otto Warmbier and the confusion around his return which serves as an example of how fraught US-DPRK relations truly are. Heads up that Jake and Jim may not fully agree on this subject and it comes out a bit but if you're looking to know more about the DPRK this is still the episode for you.

Alright, listen. This is the complicated and twisted tale of a homeless poet named John Paul Cupp who dedicated his life to promoting the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and white nationalism and how his life was further wrecked by neo-nazi satanists Joshua Caleb Sutter and Jillian Hoy. Boris also gives some background on DPRK political philosophy and Rey offers some insight into the Aryan Nations movement in America and a few key figures of American neo-Nazism. This episode links Songun philosophy, Christian Identity, an atheist organization, Kalki worship, Islamism, Satanism, Jim Jones, Aryan Nations, and the State together in a cozy South Carolina trailer held by the Order of Nine Angles offshoot, the "Tempel ov Blood".   This episode relies heavily on the journalism of Nate Thayer, particularly "White Power and Apocalyptic Cults: Pro-DPRK Americans Revealed." (NK News, 2103).   This is The Empire Never Ended, the Antifascist Amerikanski-Balkan podcast about (neo) fascist terror, the (deep) state and the alienation, nihilism and desperation produced by the capitalist system. And how to get rid of all that. Something like that... Subscribe to our Patreon for weekly premium episodes!
