Marc & Kim welcome Diane Foley, founder and president of the James Foley Legacy Foundation, to discuss the powerful work her organization does in honoring her son James Foley's legacy. After James was tragically kidnapped and murdered by ISIS, Diane quickly launched the foundation to advocate for the safe return of innocent Americans taken hostage, and to promote journalist safety worldwide. Diane shares how the foundation has made progress over the years, including securing the release of over 150 American hostages, and the ongoing challenge of negotiating with terrorists. She also reflects on the difficulties families face when their loved ones are held captive and the political complexities that influence the negotiation process. The conversation also touches on the rising threat to Americans abroad, especially in regions like Syria, Iran, and Russia. Diane urges listeners to get involved by supporting the foundation, watching the documentary Jim, The James Foley Story, and reading American Mother.
Imagine a world where terrorists leverage social media, not merely as a tool for propaganda, but as a sophisticated weapon of influence, crafting messages that penetrate deeply into society, captivating minds and shaping global opinion. This isn't fiction. It's the chilling reality unfolding around us.Today, on Some Future Day, we dive deep into the hidden corridors of terror's digital transformation with our guest, Erez Zborowski, an expert who has walked directly in the shadowy interactions of journalism, security, and intelligence.Erez began his career with a profound lesson on the cost of truth, inspired by the tragic story of journalist James Foley. His path led him from classrooms of journalism to the volatile streets of Israel, Africa, and the Middle East, operating as a fixer, a crucial role that placed him face to face with terrorist groups and gave him unique insights into their evolving strategies. That's right. A fixer. With firsthand experience, Erez witnessed how groups like ISIS revolutionized the concept of soft power, turning heinous acts into viral content designed to recruit sympathizers worldwide. In this eye-opening conversation, we'll uncover the alarming ways terrorist organizations use social media, gaming platforms, and encrypted apps to spread their message, recruit globally, and hide in plain sight. We'll discuss the chilling role AI might play both as a threat and, potentially, a defense against this rising digital menace. Prepare yourself because this discussion with Erez will forever alter how you perceive the digital spaces we navigate every day. The future is already here, and it's more complex and more perilous than most of us realize.Erez, thank you for joining me on this episode of Some Future Day.Order Marc's new book, "Some Future Day: How AI Is Going to Change Everything"Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/Episode Links:Erez on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erez-zborowski-470977288/To join the conversation, follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok

If you want an ad-free experience, you can subscribe below underneath the show description. It's been three years since the democratically elected President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated by men with direct connections (with phone records) to Prime Minister Ariel Henry. As civil unrest erupted shortly after, some 15,000 Haitians fled to the United States but were turned around by the Biden administration. Henry has promised elections multiple times but continues to push them back, now to 2025. Daniel L. Foote, U.S. Special Envoy for Haiti and former Ambassador, said “even if elections did come, Henry is so unpopular that the vast majority of Haitians say they wouldn't vote or accept the results - not least because they believe the process would likely be rigged…” Despite the violence and unpopularity of Henry, the US fully backs his leadership. James Foley, former U.S. ambassador to Haiti, said in an interview about the Biden administration's support for Henry: “They rode this horse to their doom. It's the fruit of the choices we made.”Monique Clesca, a Haitian writer and member of the Montana Group, a coalition of civil, business and political leaders, says the support given to Henry by the US is largely to blame for the chaos, and that people want a “Haitian-led solution.” That chaos includes, as Foote says, “rapes, gun violence, kidnappings, lynching” that are now “hallmarks” of daily life. The issue has now been exacerbated with the mass escape of prisoners from the two largest prisons. This is likely the reason that Republicans in Florida are finally taking action to stop the influx not just of immigrants or refugees, but of hardened criminals and gangs from Haiti. And despite rejecting refugees in 2021, the White House seems aimed to welcome them now. The motivation seems to be related to why we have Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang, roaming the streets of NYC, or drug cartels and MS13 operating in the US, or why Iranians and Chinese are being let in within groups of women and children. It's the importation of cheap labor, voters, criminals, and gangs. In the midst of this chaos, Jimmy Chérizier, leader of the notorious “G9 and Family” gang, has reportedly taken over most of Port-au-Prince, demanding Henry resign, which is exactly what the people want. So why would the Haitian people be resisiting the gangs who supposedly want the same thing? Probably because Jimmy, also known as Barbecue for his supposed actions of lighting people on fire and possibly eating them, is instructing his fighters to destroy police stations and government facilities. And it is no coincidence that as soon as he “takes over” we learn that Henry agrees to resign so long as a transitional government is brokered by the US! And now that the story has some attention, it has been turned into the political theater of an immigration argument instead of the humanitarian crisis that it is - one that was created!-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITECashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

What can a mother say to the cold-blooded executioner of her son? In American Mother, the heartrending story of the murdered American journalist Jim Foley, the writer Colum McCann and Diane Foley, Foley's mother and founder of the Foley Foundation, explore this terrible dilemma. This memorable conversation with Foley and McCann explores forgiveness, faith, and the moral complexities of justice. Most of all, though, it's the conversation about a mother's remarkable love for her dead son which she maintains and even redirects to his ISIS killer. Here are the five KEEN ON takeaways from our conversation with McCann and Foley:* The Power of Forgiveness: Diane Foley's ability to forgive Alexander Kotey, one of her son Jim's killers, demonstrates extraordinary grace. Her Christian faith played a crucial role in this process, though forgiveness wasn't easy or natural - it was a conscious choice that led to meaningful human connection even in the most difficult circumstances.* Policy Impact Through Tragedy: Jim Foley's death led to significant changes in U.S. hostage policy. The Foley Foundation's work has helped bring home nearly 150 Americans since 2015, and led to the creation of a formal government structure for handling hostage situations - a direct result of the Obama administration's initial failures and subsequent reforms.* The Complexity of Justice: The case highlights nuanced views on justice and the death penalty. The Foleys advocated against the death penalty for their son's killers, arguing that life imprisonment offers a chance for reflection and potential redemption, while execution would simply perpetuate cycles of violence.* Grief's Individual Journey: Diane's experience shows how grief manifests differently for each person. While her other children needed distance from the situation to heal, she channeled her grief into activism and forgiveness. Her willingness to meet her son's killer was not shared by other family members.* The Value of Journalism: Jim Foley's story underscores the importance and dangers of conflict journalism. His commitment to telling stories of people yearning for freedom in the Middle East, even after being kidnapped once in Libya, reflects the crucial role journalists play in helping the world understand complex situations and human struggles.Diane M. Foley is President and Founder of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, which she created in September 2014 less than a month after the public beheading by ISIS in Syria of her son James W. Foley, an American freelance conflict journalist. In 2015, she led JWFLF efforts to fund the start of Hostage US and the International Alliance for a Culture of Safety, ACOS. She actively participated in the National Counterterrorism Center hostage review which culminated in the Presidential Policy Directive-30. This directive created the current US hostage enterprise consisting of an interagency Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and a White House Hostage Response Group to free innocent Americans taken hostage or wrongfully detained abroad. JWFLF was instrumental in the passage of the Robert Levinson Hostage Taking and Accountability Act. She has been a tireless hostage, wrongful detainee and family advocate within the US hostage enterprise, Congress, and every presidential administration since 2014. She has raised awareness of international hostage-taking and wrongful detention using the award-winning documentary, “Jim, the James Foley story”, opinion pieces in the New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today and media interviews. Diane has spoken on the power of forgiveness in various faith communities and was included in 200 Women, edited by Geoff Blackwell. She co-authored the book “American Mother” which was published in 2024 with writer Colum McCann. Diane is also the author of a chapter called, “Life For A Voice: the Work of Journalist James W. Hingehen und hinsehen, wo es besonders schmerzt – ein Leitsatz, der James Foley antreibt. For time immemorial, various groups have been taking hostages, political prisoners, and illegally detaining people with impunity. This tried-and-true method of gaining leverage over a rival state or group continues today, despite the fact that is runs contrary to established international law. As of this posting 42 Americans are being illegally detained by foreign governments and the United States, after a long practice of not negotiating, is finally getting serious about bringing its citizens home. As this delicate dance continues to play out on the international stage, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation continues to lead the way on responses to these illegal and immoral actions taken by foreign governments, rebel groups, and terrorist organizations. In this month's episode, we speak with Diane Foley, mother of slain journalist James Foley, about the work of their family's foundation to help ensure no other family has to endure the pain they did back in 2012 when ISIS killed their son. We dive into what the research tells us about different responses, what is effective, what needs to change, and how we all can work to keep ourselves safe while traveling abroad. This important conversation provides audiences with key information and hope for the future. The more international attention we can bring to this practice, the more we can pressure governments to sign on to the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention in State-to-State Relations, a global initiative started by Canada in 2021, the less likely it is that people will continue to be used as political pawns, simply because of their nationality. Uitstekend idee. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In August 2014, the world was shocked and appalled by the brutal murder of James Foley. An American journalist, Foley was captured by ISIS in 2012 and ultimately beheaded on camera - with the barbaric execution uploaded to the internet. Ten years on, I spoke with his mother Diane about her extraordinary strength and compassion, even towards those who inflicted so much pain on her family. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. August this year marks 10 years since the shocking execution of American freelance journalist James Foley at the hands of ISIS amid the war in Syria in 2014. His videotaped decapitation was the first of a spree of ISIS beheadings, including several Americans, which ISIS often used as recruitment propaganda. Jim's killing, almost two years after he had been captured, stunned the world. A month later, ISIS did the same to another American journalist, Time Magazine contributor Steven Joel Sotloff. A month later, an American aid worker, Peter Kassig, was killed in the same way. Another American aid worker, Kayla Mueller, was killed in 2015 while being held captive by ISIS. Jim's mother, Diane Foley, has pushed through the horror of those years by establishing the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation in her son's memory and pressing the U.S. government persistently over a decade to reform its approach to cases of American hostages held abroad. At the time, its policy, as she explains in a recent article published by Just Security, consisted of little more than a slogan: “The United States does not negotiate with terrorists.” Co-hosting this episode is Just Security's Washington Senior Editor, Viola Gienger. On this episode, we're privileged to have Jim Foley's mother, Diane Foley, and Luke Hartig, a member of Just Security's editorial board, who first met Diane when he was a senior director at the National Security Council working on hostage policy and she was advocating for changes in hostage policy. He serves on the Foley Foundation's advisory board. Diane has been a driving force in reforming U.S. policy and practices on the handling of American hostages held abroad. Part of that campaign has been an annual research report that the foundation produces, entitled Bringing Americans Home. It collects and analyzes evidence-based data on hostages currently held in 16 countries to inform the American public, government officials, and lawmakers about how the U.S. government is doing and what else is needed to secure the release of U.S. hostages abroad and reduce the risks of capture in the first place. Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer. ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage. I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree. This...is A Bit of Optimism. Writer Colum McCann with the story of Diane Foley, whose son James was murdered by the Islamic State (CW: this episode contains descriptions of violent acts and terrorism)
5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each. Colum McCann's seven novels and three collections of short stories have been published in over forty languages and received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honours, including the National Book Award for his novel Let the Great World Spin in 2013. TransAtlantic was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013, and his most recent novel, Apeirogon, also longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, is an international bestseller on four continents. In his new book, McCann tells the story of Diane Foley, mother of American journalist James Foley, who was kidnapped in northern Syria, and murdered by ISIS in a public beheading that would ricochet in video around the world. A testament to the power of radical empathy and moral courage, American Mother takes us inside one woman's extraordinary journey to find connection in a world torn asunder, and to fight for others as a way to keep her son's memory alive. On Aug. 19, 2014, the world watched in horror as the American journalist James Foley read a script prepared for him by ISIS terrorists, who filmed him from an unknown location in the Syrian desert. Mr. Foley, who had been in ISIS captivity for almost two years, was then beheaded by his captors. That is how Diane Foley learned that her son, who had been kidnapped in Libya on a previous reporting trip, would not be coming home this time. In the new book, American Mother, Diane teams up with Colum McCann, an award-winning and international best-selling author, to tell her and her son's story. Both authors join Zac and Ashley this week for a powerful conversation about grief, forgiveness and perseverance. They discuss: How Diane's son James discovered his vocation as a journalist Why Diane decided to meet with one of her son's killers How her Catholic faith sustained her through James's years of captivity and after his death In Signs of the Times, Zac and Ashley discuss a new book of interviews with Pope Francis, in which he discusses his relationship with Pope Benedict XVI and the conclave that elected him and his predecessor. Plus, Cardinal Wilton Gregory calls President Biden a “cafeteria Catholic” during an appearance on CBS's “Face the Nation” on Easter Sunday, and the Society of Jesus releases a strongly worded statement on the war in Gaza. And now that the story has some attention, it has been turned into the political theater of an immigration argument instead of the humanitarian crisis that it is - one that was created!-FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachingsTwitter: https://twitter.com/TST___RadioFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachingsWEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.infoPaypal: rdgable@yahoo.comCashApp: $rdgableBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tstradioSUBSCRIBE TO NETWORK: http://aftermath.mediaEMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

Today on the show host Steve Ordower welcomes his friend and colleague, journlist Stephan Garnett - who is wrapping up a long and distinguished carreer teaching at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. They discussed a myriad of issues, including the state of journalism today and the incentive structures that are influential in creating the current media landscape in the U.S. The conversation touched on how destructive the current media landscape is to fostering productive conversation, and those that put a good-faith effort forward to cultivate nuanced conversation are often-times vilified. They also touched on how certain words have become triggers in the public arena, such as "woke" or "PC," as well as the comedic brilliance of Dave Chappelle and the use of the N-word. And, Garnett discussed some of the remarkable projects he has worked on, as well as the journalists that have come through his classroom - which includes the late James Foley who was captured in 2012 and killed in 2014 while covering the Syrian civil war.Stephan Garnett has a 30-year career as a journalist. In addition to working as a suburban and community reporter, he has been an investigative reporter for The Chicago Reporter, and an urban and police reporter for the City News Bureau of Chicago. He spent 14 years as a magazine feature writer and editor, first for ShopTalk, a trade publication, then as a contributing writer to Dollars & Sense and Blackbook magazines. More recently, Garnett has worked in radio, film and television. He has researched and consulted for documentaries produced by the BBC and CNN and has been an essayist for "Chicago Matters," an acclaimed local Public Radio community series. In 2005, Garnett executive produced and wrote and narrated the script for a 15-minute multi-media documentary on the last building left standing at Robert Taylor Homes, once the largest public housing project in the nation. Garnett teaches Journalism Methods for graduates and Media Convergence for undergraduates. He also edits for the Medill News Service and has served as an adviser for Medill's Global Journalism program.INSIDE ROBERT TAYLOR project:https://youtu.be/bprhTUZIOCg#rhythmoflife #podcast #podcasts #podcastshow #podcasting #media #press #thepress #journalism #president #steveordower #bobhercules #media #medianews #news #press #incentives #davechappelle
