A decade ago, the Scottish people went to the polls for a referendum vote to make a choice: should the country break free of the United Kingdom? Ultimately, they voted to stay by a resounding margin – crushing the hopes of the Scottish National Party and soothing the fears of the British government of the day. But the issue of Independence continues to divide, and in this special miniseries, George Osborne and Ed Balls are joined by the former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon to take a fresh, forensic look at the forces, decisions and party politics that drove the independence movement. With just weeks to go, polling suggested the ‘Yes' campaign had it, and Scottish voters were going to vote to leave. Nicola Sturgeon reveals the sense of jubilation inside the SNP when the tide began to turn their way, and fear the British establishment was only set to become more ferocious. If the poll had come just a little later, could the ‘Yes' side have been triumphant? Did the “Vow” – a promise for more devolution powers – make a difference? Who was convinced Rupert Murdoch was going to use his tabloid to support their interests? Remember to send us your questions in for our special Inside The Room: The Scottish Independence Referendum episode of EMQs. In episode two of this special miniseries, Nicola Sturgeon, Ed Balls and George Osborne reflect on the decisions, mistakes and motives that may have tilted public perceptions around Scotland's departure from the UK. We go inside Cameron government's so-called Project Fear – was it all just scaremongering? Nicola reveals the moment she thought it was all going to collapse, and why George played part. And Ed lifts the lid on the machinations that led him to say Scotland would have to join the Euro if it were to leave the UK. Part 3 of 'Inside The Room: The Scottish Independence Referendum' is available to listen to NOW for subscribers to Political Currency Gold, as well as Ed and George's exclusive debrief. On 18th September 2024 we marked the 10th anniversary of the historic first Scottish Independence Referendum, Indyref for short.  During a passionate and exhilarating campaign, support for the Yes side grew from around 30% to over 50% before settling back at 45% on the day of the vote.  In the words of Professor Sir John Curtace, the Yes side lost the vote but we won the campaign.  Support for independence has hovered around the 50% mark for the last decade. Campaign group Believe In Scotland organised events throughout Scotland to mark the occasion.  The mood was reflective, but upbeat and determined.  We are STILL YES.   Speeches from the Holyrood rally: 00:00:48   Gordon MacIntyre Kemp, founder of Believe In Scotland 00:12:56    Lesley Riddoch, award winning journalist, author, filmmaker 00:28:32    Richard Walker, Editor of the Sunday National 00:40:31    Andrew Barr, co-founder of the National Collective 00:46:52    Gordon MacIntyre Kemp You can contribute to the Believe in Scotland crowdfunder here https://www.believeinscotland.org/crowdfunder2024 Independence Live's crowdfunder is here https://independencelive.net/crowdfunder/   The Scottish Independence Podcasts team produce a NEW podcast episode every Friday search for Scottish Independence Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts.  Remember to like and subscribe! Eight years after Scotland said no to independence in its 2014 referendum, Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon now wants to put the issue back at the top of the agenda. In a speech to the Scottish parliament last week, the first minister set out the route map for holding a vote on the issue on October 19 next year. The question put to Scots would be the same as in the 2014 referendum – Should Scotland be an independent country? But holding a second referendum is shrouded in legal problems and there's no certainty it will even happen, as London Editor Denis Staunton explains. In 2014, Michael Sturrock voted No in the Scottish Independence Referendum. But he, like many others, has since changed his mind and now campaigns for Independence. Then, in late 2020, he founded the NoToYes.vote website. It shares the stories of people with similar experiences of moving from No to Yes. This makes Michael the perfect guest for the first in an ongoing series of 'No to Yes' episodes of Scotland's Choice. The most obvious question when speaking to someone who has made the journey from No to Yes is "Why did you vote no?" Then, "why did you change your mind?" It's no surprise that the promises made around EU membership and the subsequent breaking of these promises are a focal point for Michael. Part of the reasoning for setting NoToYes.vote was to give those who transitioned from No to Yes an opportunity to make their voices heard. He hoped that this will help muster more confidence in those who are struggling with changing their mind. Drew discussed this with Michael in the podcast, as a key part of winning the next referendum is changing minds. The maths don't add up without this happening. How do we engage with soft no voters? Should we rush into a referendum? Is federalism really an option? All of the above and more are points of discussion this week. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

The 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum and this year's general election led to a passionate debate about nationhood and nationalism. But not for the first time. Kylie Murray of the University of Oxford discusses the ways in which feelings surrounding Anglo-Scottish relations and visions of Scottish national identity reached a peak of imaginative, sometimes intemperate expression in 15th-century Scottish literature. Among the jewels - Abbot Walter Bower's Scotichronicon, the most re-published text in Scotland for the next two hundred years – and the inspiration behind one of Scotland's greatest epic poems, Blind Harry's The Wallace, where two hundred years after the Wars of Independence, the old hero is virtually re-invented as a second messiah.  This first podcast from two tutors at the University of Edinburgh (Mark McLay and Dr Malcolm Craig) looks at the introduction of slavery to the Southern colonies in the seventeenth century. We examine the eternal debate - 'Did slavery lead to racism or did racism lead to slavery?' - and we consider why we even bother trying to answer this question.  In addition, we delve into the key debates that surround this question and give our views on the arguments of leading historical works of this period.  Finally, we opine on the legacy that the introduction of slavery bequeathed the founders of the United States in the late eighteenth century.  All this - and yet we still manage to dodge an emergency and wrongly predict the outcome of the Scottish Independence Referendum!  We hope you enjoy the podcast and stick around for the next episode - appearing in two weeks time - which will pick apart the debates surrounding the formation of the United States.            Mark & Malcolm            Historiography included in discussion:          - Oscar and  Mary Handlin, 'Origins of the Southern Labor System,' William and Mary Quarterly VI1.2 (April 1950), 199-222       - Edmund  S. TravCast is the Writer's Podcast from the Traverse, Scotland’s New Writing Theatre. Associate Director Emma Callander interviews well known playwrights and theatre makers whose work features in the programme at the Traverse. In this episode, Emma is joined by three writers taking part in Writing on the Wall: Ella Phillips, a seventeen year old writer who took part in Class Act 2014; Lara Jo Bazzu, twenty-two year old University student and member of Traverse Young Writers and Hannah Jo Doherty Mackinlay, a nineteen year old Class Act Alumni writer and member of Traverse Young Writers. Writing on the Wall is a project to coincide with the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum with the voices of the young writers we work with throughout the year. Young writers from Scribble (our writing programme for 14-17 year olds) , Traverse Young Writers (Traverse writing programme for 18-25 year olds) and Class Act (our flag ship senior schools playwriting project) were invited to work with the Traverse Artistic Team to create short plays, monologues, one word provocations which will be scrawled on the Traverse walls, tables, fixtures and fittings until September. These mini plays are the young writers’ ideas on independence, looking towards what happens now and next. The project explored how the young writers feel creatively at this time of potential change and how this creativity can be part of a wider conversation.
