In this Old Front Line WW1 podcast Q&A episode, we answer listeners' questions about the history of the First World War and the legacy of the conflict today. We begin by exploring British and Commonwealth war cemeteries, explaining how the headstones are kept perfectly aligned and why some graves appear in straight rows while others are spaced further apart, including the role of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of how this was made permanent, We then look at the huge stockpiles of artillery ammunition left at the end of the First World War, discussing how millions of shells were stored, disposed of, or destroyed after the Armistice of 1918.Another question focuses on officers' servants, often known as batmen, in the British Army during WW1: how they were recruited, what duties they carried out on and off the battlefield, and what their wartime experience was really like. Finally, we examine salvage on the Western Front and ask whether the famous scene in All Quiet on the Western Front, where Paul Bäumer is issued a dead soldier's tunic, could really have happened during the war.The Killing Ground mentioned in the podcast can be found here: Killing Ground on YouTube.Main Image: Tyne Cotts Pillbox. Napoleonica: Steel and Magic is a new high fantasy miniature wargame that reimagines the Napoleonic War with elements like Napoleon Bonaparte riding a Hippogriff. The miniatures are noted for their stunning, large-than-life resin casts from Signum Games. Mechanically, the game utilizes a system of drawing random Order Tokens and Maneuver Cards to activate units, which injects friction into army control reminiscent of games like *Memoir ’44*. Additionally, a bid for the Leader role determines the round’s intensity via an Escalation Card, which controls the number of Orders and Maneuver Cards drawn. En Garde is a forthcoming fast-paced, one-versus-one duelling game in the 54mm scale, set in a Low Fantasy world of swashbucklers and brigands. Conceived by John Blanche and Tuomas Pirinen, the game will feature hand-sculpted miniatures from artists like Paul Hicks, with an initial release via a crowdfunding campaign called Vanguard. The setting includes a twist with vampires being the “good guys,” and the core design aims to make duels dynamic and engaging beyond simple combat. The sunsetting of the BlackLibrary.com website and the Black Library Audio app will happen on August 31st. They are to be replaced by a single new Black Library app launching on March 18th that will feature an inbuilt eReader and MP3 player. Current account holders are urged to link their accounts and download older, unsupported content before the cutoff date. Community concerns are noted regarding the new app being a closed ecosystem with no integration for external eReaders or content from third-party sellers like Amazon and Audible, which ties into the ongoing DRM and “own versus license” debate among consumers. Asmodee made two major announcements, acquiring the Sheriff of Nottingham IP from CMON and striking a second deal with Netflix for Ticket to Ride. The Sheriff of Nottingham acquisition, following previous deals for CMON IPs like Zombicide, is attributed to CMON’s ongoing financial difficulties. Sheriff of Nottingham will join Asmodee’s Z-man studios. The Ticket to Ride deal with Netflix is similar to the Catan deal, granting a license for multiple shows or films. The first project will be a Ticket to Ride film, with Ben Mekler and Chris Amick attached to write the script. No premiere date has been set. Legitimate Salvage is a new game in the Forbidden Psalm line, a tabletop miniatures game about “corporate space horror” that is inspired by and compatible with the MÖRK BORG TTRPG. In the game, you control a crew of four working for the R&R company, whose business is rescuing people lost in space and who refuse to pay hazard pay unless someone dies, forcing your crew to work off their debt in the great uncaring void. The game features new mechanics, including debt, stress, and rules for zero gravity combat, alongside new monsters and equipment, all compatible with other Forbidden Psalm games like 28 Psalms and Killsampleprocess. #Napoleonica #EnGarde #BlackLibrary #Asmodee #legitimatesalvage Napoleonica: Steel and Magic Rules: https://signumgames.com/napoleonica-steel-and-magic Legitimate Salvage Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/impioussaint/legitimate-salvage-a-forbidden-psalm-sci-fi-game Dragonbane Trudvang: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192053011/dragonbane-trudvang-the-legend-returns Fallout MEGA Bundle: https://humblebundleinc.sjv.io/L0aArV Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support us by Shopping at Miniature Market (afilliate link): https://miniature-market.sjv.io/K0yj7n Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/

There's a ton of stuff to be excited about in miniatures right now but my number one upcoming release for 2026 has gotta be Oasis: Tactical Salvage Reclamation. I happened upon some teasers for this 6mm scifi game last month and was instantly hooked on the images of mixed forces of infantry, vehicles, and hovering spaceships duking it out over vital resources and alien tech. I'm an absolute sucker for tiny scale scifi so I knew I had to get the creators on here to tell me all about it! Oasis will debut at Adepticon 2026 (find them at booth #300) but creators were kind enough to give me some time to tell me all about Oasis' gameplay, lore, and the roadmap ahead as the game debuts at Adepticon before a summertime crowdfunder for their two-player starter set. In the meantime, join them on Discord to stay up to date on all things Oasis!brushwieldersunion.com
Don't shy away from the junkyard when it's time to find a part. Whether you're a hardcore salvage builder looking for a door skin or it's your first time and you just need a head rest, outfits like Best Foreign Used Parts are ideal - lots of stock, lots of knowledge, and lots of tetanus shots. Hostus Maximus Justin Fort and Ryan The TBD may be a little biased (It's in there!), but there's a lot to learn from this episode: what parts move fastest, the cars that junkyard shoppers like the most (and where), what to do first when you're heading to the junkyard, and a little bit about this business as a whole. There's also Dodge R/Ts (Dakota and Caravan), Toyotas, Panteras, Typhoons, Cyclones, Renaults, an MG and a Volvo 240, cars with guns, 'fridges, violins and money, and so many Subarus. The master of this demonstration of disassembly at Best Parts (Don), also has excellent stories from four decades in the business - crazy finds in the 'yard, what goes on after the gates close, airbag "testing", walking catalytics, hail (No!), junkyard magic, the price of steel, and structural recycling. Soup for you: The Allman Brothers, faces for radio, Colorado Springs and Gold Hill history (schmistory!), R-rated junk car finds, and Johnny Cash's forgotten song about Deloreans. ...And don't trust your lyin' eyes - the Garage Hour is always PG, so the "Explicit" rating that occasionally appears on episodes is just some 'bot that was too drunk to do its job.

With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview In this episode, I'm talking with Level Up Mastermind & Inner Circle member Amy Cseh about how live social selling utterly transformed her retail business at her shop, Schoolhouse Salvage in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Amy shares how live selling began as a way to use slow in-store hours more effectively and gradually evolved into the primary way customers shopped with Schoolhouse Salvage. Amy talks us through how her business shifted over 13 years, including the move from storage unit to physical retail space to being mostly online with limited open hours. She explains how responding to customer engagement during live sales helped shape decisions about inventory, space, and how the business operates today. Listeners will gain clarity on how social selling can grow organically, how it can serve an existing customer base, and how it can support long-term sustainability without forcing a specific retail model. This is the motivating conversation every retailer needs right now. Our Key Topics How Amy flipped the script from slow retail hours on a Wednesday night to a team of 15 by taking the first step of turning on her camera The encouragement all retailers need to hear to turn their cameras on NOW How to use Facebook live sales to sell inventory - no matter what business you are in How customers responded to live selling early on and how it has evolved over the past 7 years Transitioning from brick and mortar to mostly online sales by doubling down on what was working for Amy Serving community through online engagement with a happy heart - this goes for your team and your customers/clients Key Takeaways around Live Social Selling Social selling can begin as a small experiment. Just turn the camera on! Bring your shop to your customers. Get out of your own way. Build a system that works for you. Don't want to ship? Start without shipping. Live selling can supplement and even drive in-store traffic. Live social selling isn't just for those without regular retail hours, but be sure you are wanting to do the work necessary of adding another revenue stream to your business. Online community can become the primary sales driver. Be consistent and engage in the comments. Pour into your customers. Commit to it. Loyalty will follow. Retail models can shift gradually over time. Amy shares the story of how her business started by collecting salvaged pieces from tear-downs that were otherwise going to be discarded. Her business has evolved tremendously over the past 13 years in a way that is truly inspiring. Follow along with Amy and her team on Facebook and watch them work. Amy has also documented the systems and resources used by Schoolhouse Salvage that support the success of their business. Her methods are tried and true - there is no fluff. Environmental Series. Episode #1 of 4. In 1851, a journalist named Henry Mayhew set out to document the lives of London's working poor. What he found was astonishing. In the richest city in the world, thousands of people made their living by picking through other people's trash. There were the bone-grubbers, who scavenged bones from gutters to sell to soap manufacturers. There were the mudlarks, mostly children, who waded through the filthy banks of the Thames searching for coal, rope, and bits of metal. And then there were the pure-finders. What's “pure” you ask? Well, "pure" was a Victorian euphemism for dog excrement. Pure-finders, mostly elderly women, spent their days scouring the streets of London for dog droppings, which they then sold by the pailful to tanneries in Bermondsey. The tanners used it to purify leather. Hence the name. We tend to think of recycling as a modern invention, something that started with the environmental movement of the 1970s. Blue bins, sorting instructions, that kind of thing. But as brilliant historians have uncovered, the story of how humans have dealt with their discarded materials stretches back millennia. For most of human history, the concept of "throwing something away" barely existed. To begin our series on environmental history, we're tackling the premodern history of recycling. Or as pre-WWII people would have called it: reclamation, salvage, scrapping, repair, and reuse. We'll meet rag-and-bone men and dustmen, shoddy masters and mudlarks. We'll discover how rags became paper, how old wool became new cloth, and how virtually nothing in the premodern world was ever truly waste. This Monday February 9th on KPFA Radio's Women's Magazine Kate Raphael talks with Arlene Eisen about her new memoir In the Worldwide Family of Militant Women. Arlene has been a militant in the struggle against imperialism and white supremacy since the 1960s—first as a protester facing tear gas and later as a teacher and writer. She edited the newspaper called The Movement, and was a leading voice in the anti-imperialist women's movement of the 1970s. At various times as she raised her two sons mostly as a single parent, she was a lecturer in sociology and women's studies, a machinist, a journalist and public health expert. During the first ten years of her children's lives, she was on welfare. In 2012 Arlene Eisen authored the groundbreaking study, Operation Ghetto Storm, published by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, which revealed that an unarmed Black person is killed by an agent of the state every 28 hours in the united states. In the Worldwide Family of Militant Women traces Arlene's journey from New York to Berkeley to Vietnam, China, Cuba, and back to San Francisco. She narrates her deep involvement in the Black Freedom struggle, the sixties counterculture, the movements to stop the Vietnam War, to support anti-imperialist struggles from Iran to Puerto Rico people, and the growing importance of feminism in helping her make sense of her own life. In the Worldwide Family of Militant Women is available from Iskra Books. And in the second half of the show Lisa Dettmer talks to composer and Musician Adrienne Torf. Adrienne Torf and her collaborator Raymond O Caldwell have produced an intimate portrait of well known local legendary black feminist and activist scholar, teacher and poet June Jordan by combining her words of fierce commitment to justice and self determination for all people with music and movement. The show, “Poetry for the People: The June Jordan Experience” is being performed in Berkeley for one night only on February 24th at the Freight and Salvage. This show is performed by six actors from the Fountain Theatre, Los Angeles production and Jordan's collaborator and partner, composer/pianist Adrienne Torf. the show features Jordan's poetry, interviews, and other writing, along with her work set to music by Torf, John Adams, and Bernice Johnson Reagon. “Poetry for the People: The June Jordan Experience” was honored with the Theater Washington Helen Hayes Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play in 2023. This performance on Tuesday February 24th at the Freight and Salvage will be the only one outside of Los Angeles this year. *Premium tickets include admission to a post-show reception with the cast and sponsors. U.S.-India relations were once described as one of Washington's MOST important strategic bets in the twenty-first century. But over the past year, that partnership has come under serious strain—buffeted by trade disputes, sharp rhetoric, and deep disagreements over Pakistan and Kashmir. In the current print edition of Foreign Affairs, Lisa Curtis and Richard Fontaine argue that this rupture is not just another rough patch, but rather a potentially consequential turning point. The essay, “America Must Salvage Its Relationship with India—or Risk Losing a Global Swing State,” makes the case that how Washington manages its ties with New Delhi in this moment will have lasting implications for the Indo-Pacific balance of power, U.S. credibility in Asia, and competition with China. To talk more about this new piece, Lisa joins Milan on the show this week. Lisa is Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. She is a foreign policy and national security expert with over 20 years of service in the U.S. government—including at the National Security Council, CIA, State Department, and Capitol Hill. Most recently, Lisa served as Senior Director for South and Central Asia at the National Security Council from 2017 to 2021. Milan and Lisa discuss the “fit of presidential pride and pique” that has derailed bilateral ties, President Trump's repeated desire to mediate between India and Pakistan, and the sudden revival in U.S.-Pakistan ties. Plus, the two discuss America's strategic competition with Beijing, what it will take for Washington to remedy its trust deficit with New Delhi, and the long-term consequences of a sustained rupture between the United States and India.

In today's episode, I sit down with Jack and Lewis, the founders of Brighton based vintage clothing store Salvage and Sawdust a name that's been creating serious buzz in the vintage scene. We talk about how they both got started in the world of vintage fashion, what first sparked their passion for the craft, and how that passion has grown into a thriving business. We dive into the role technology plays in the ever-growing vintage industry, and how it's shaping the way they buy, sell, search for, and connect with clothing. Jack and Lewis are buzzing about the future not just of their brand, but of vintage as a movement. Beyond buying and selling, they also specialise in restoring garments that have been fully worn but are far from finished. Their ability to breathe new life into clothing that might otherwise end up in landfill is a true talent, rooted in care, skill, and respect for the garment's story. They also share the journey from running a small store to opening a huge new three floor space, set to open this week, and reflect on how far they've come along the way. Jack and Lewis' enthusiasm for their world and their commitment to changing habits around overconsumption and waste is genuinely inspiring. A must listen for anyone interested in vintage fashion, sustainability, independent retail, and building something meaningful.
