Medical Ethics Unpacked: Shifting Vaccine Regulation and Policy, with Jason Schwartz, PhD

In this episode of Medical Ethics Unpacked, hosts Dominic Sisti and Steve Levine welcome Jason Schwartz, PhD, associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health, for a discussion on vaccine ethics, public health infrastructure, and the challenges of maintaining trust in immunization programs. Together, they explore how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped public attitudes toward vaccines, while also underscoring long-standing tensions between individual autonomy and collective responsibility. Schwartz, whose work focuses on vaccine policy and history, offers perspective on the systems and institutions, such as the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), helping to translate scientific evidence into public health recommendations. This episode comes at a time when ACIP is once again in the headlines as HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently replaced all 17 members with a new slate of individuals, citing concerns about groupthink and conflicts of interest. The move has generated widespread commentary about the role and value of such expert advisory bodies in shaping public health decisions, especially in the face of growing skepticism and political scrutiny. Ethical questions about equity, communication, and responsibility are threaded throughout the discussion. The hosts and Schwartz reflect on what it means to make fair vaccine recommendations in the context of incomplete data, and how institutions can maintain public trust amid scientific uncertainty. They also discuss how the infrastructure behind public health decisions—committees, advisory boards, and interagency coordination—can either strengthen or undermine confidence depending on how they function and how well they are understood. In this episode, Michael speaks with Maron Greenleaf, assistant professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College. They discuss Maron's recently published book, Forest Lost: Producing Green Capitalism in the Brazilian Amazon, in which she examines a set of carbon offset programs in the Brazilian state of Acre. Unlike traditional forest commodities that require extraction, carbon offsets monetize forest protection by paying communities to keep carbon stored in standing trees. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, Maron describes how forest carbon markets and offsets can be unexpectedly inclusive, providing economic opportunities for marginalized communities, while simultaneously reinforcing some of the inequalities they claim to address. Maron uses this study to illuminate broader questions about whether market-based solutions can effectively address environmental crises. Her work suggests that while green capitalism offers compelling possibilities for reconciling economic growth with environmental protection, it also reproduces some of the structural problems inherent in capitalist systems. What You Need to Know is the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Trump's presidential immunity case, as well as a ruling in favor of Jan 6th protesters unfairly charged. Republicans need to stay focused on the “Main Thing” – which is winning the election in November! These are great rulings, but don't get distracted even by celebration. The election will come down to just a handful of states, and that's the big deal Republicans must focus on. Don't let off the gas! Stephen Baskerville  author of The New Politics of Sex: The Sexual Revolution, Civil Liberties, and his new book, Growth of Governmental Power, and new book, Who Lost America?: Why the United States Went “Communist” and What to Do about It, joins Ed to discuss how the right has folded in the fight against the left. The right has not acted strong enough to counteract the left on some of their damaging beliefs on things such as religion and foreign policy. Stephen points out the black family has deteriorated due to the welfare and divorce systems. Ted talks about how Eastern Europeans are laughing at the stupidity of the west. John Schlafly, author of the weekly Phyllis Schlafly Report column, joins Ed to talk about the Trump rally in Philadelphia last Saturday. John has watched many Trump rallies over the years, and was particularly impressed with this performance at this pivotal moment in time. Trump's momentum nationwide is undeniable, and now it is more important than ever that people get out and vote.  Wrap Up: We the People must VOTE. The question of how we reshape democracy, walking the fine line between stagnation and populist rage - is the defining problem of our time - with a coherent strategy, we can shape anything. In its absence, we're going to end up spinning in pointless circles, arguing about trivia while the world burns. We set this podcast up months ago, thinking we'd talk about the example Scotland sets for the UK and the rest of the world as a way *maybe) to shape democracy.  And then Nicola Sturgeon stepped down and Scotland fell into the kind of turmoil I thought only impacted England. And then the turmoil in England sparked a general election. So now we're talking about how  we can use this moment to affect the digital, distributed democracy that we need with two of the smartest people in our eco-system - people who give their entire lives to thinking about this question: Indra Adnan and Pat Kane of The Alternative. This week's guests are Indra Adnan and Pat Kane. Indra is the author of The Politics of Waking up: Power and Possibility in the Fractal Age and Pat is a musician, writer, curator, consultant, activist and futurist and his substack is absolutely essential reading for anyone who wants to keep up to date with the ideas in our eco-system. The reason we're here, they're, Co-Initiators of The Alternative, which is a socio-political platform hosting #PlanetA: new ground to stand on for a flourishing future - and a daily blog and a forum, or perhaps a melting pot - for new ideas and new ways being.  Acknowledging that the systems we are embedded in - media, economic, political - take our power away.  The Alternative and Planet A ask us how we achieve the world we know deep down is possible. You have to experience The Alternative really to understand what it is to explore ideas at the leading edge of our emergent inter-becoming, to think through the lens of cosmo-localism, to hold new truths of who and how we are and to frame radical new political options in this age of cardboard cut-out politicians spouting ever more stale lines that were out of date in the 80s and are certainly not fit for purpose in the third decade of the twenty first century.  So this conversation takes us deep into this territory. Recorded on the day after the EU elections, as France heads to the polls and the UK's general election descends ever further into infantile name-calling and political posturing that no longer even pretends to be the adults in the room, it was - and is - really refreshing to explore ideas of what's possible with people whose entire lives revolve around the concepts of emergent change.  The Alternative Indra's book Indra in episode #124Pat's musicPat on Substack and at The NationalEcological Civilisation Manda's novel Any Human Power

The Majority Report with Sam Seder

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel J. Galvin, professor of political science at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book Alt-Labor and the New Politics of Workers' Rights. Then, she's joined by Richard Beck, senior writer at n+1 Magazine, to discuss his recent piece in the New Left Review entitled "Bidenism Abroad." First, Emma runs through updates on Nikki Haley's endorsement of Donald Trump, Israel's continued victimization in the face of committing genocide, US support for Israel, Senate politics, Justice Alito, Anti-trust action, UK elections, and more, before parsing through Fox News' coverage of the FBI's capacity to USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST DONALD TRUMP, per typical procedure. Professor Daniel Galvin then joins, first contextualizing what these “alternative labor” organizations are, with networks like worker centers, community organizations, and regional alliances providing particularly vulnerable workers in the vast, unionized sectors of the US economy an avenue for workplace and labor justice, be it wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, or labor conditions, though generally focusing on rectifying wrongs that have already occurred. Expanding on this, Professor Galvin explores how these organizations have begun shifting to a more proactive approach, advocating for state and local employment and labor policy to chip away at the severe power imbalance in the US economy, finding success in bluer districts and states, while meeting much more institutional (and financial) opposition elsewhere. After walking through the slow and steady undermining of FDR's New Deal system of labor protections after the Second World War, and the shift away from collective bargaining to minimal employment protections, Galvin wraps up by assessing the devastating impact employer exploitation like wage theft actually has on the US economy, resulting in billions taken from the lowest-wage workers. Richard Beck and Emma then reflect on Biden's Foreign Policy platform on the campaign trail, centering a “foreign policy for the middle class” and a narrative of “Democracies versus Autocracies,” which particularly worked with his early policies of support for Ukraine and withdrawal from Afghanistan, respectively, and look to the main individuals – Anthony Blinken and Jake Sullivan – responsible for shaping this platform. After expanding on the evolution of Biden's foreign policy during his first few years in office, Richard and Emma begin to explore how October 7th (and Israel's following ethnic cleansing of Gaza) completely upended these commitments, laying bare the failures of the autocracy-democracy binary, and reinserting the US into an expensive quagmire in the Middle East, all while relying on the policies bequeathed unto him by Donald Trump's far-right administration. Next, Beck looks to the parallels in Biden's approach to China, continuing the economic warfare established under Trump with major EV tariffs and an ongoing attempt at a TikTok Ban, before exploring the increasingly precarious status of US hegemony over the last few decades, and wrapping up by assessing the future of Biden's inactive and defensive leadership as the 2024 election draws near. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a new EmMajority Report intro song, Sam's evolution into a cruiser (as in… the ships), and talk with Sky from Florida about the ideologies behind hating student debt-forgiveness. A Syrian Student from Germany dives into the response to the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu, Mehdi Hasan and Ilan Pappé have an enlightening conversation on the future of Palestine and Israel, and Tulsi Gabbard doubles down on both her anti- and pro-war stances. Are we at a turning point in our evolution? Through crisis, transformation can occur. Quantum transformation is nature's tradition, according to our guest today, visionary futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard who discusses her video series called “Humanity Ascending: A New Way Through Together.” Barbara discusses the meaning of Divine Intent and possibilities. When we see things not working, such as destruction of ourselves and our planet, we must know that it is possible to transform. We are destroying thousands of species, and this sets the evolutionary scale back, but Planet Earth is giving birth to a new species through this crisis. Thousands of people are now emerging with a creative consciousness.  It is now possible to address challenges by shifting consciousness through focusing on cooperation, creativity, and sustainability. We can evolve beyond this condition through more conscious connectivity with each other. We can co-create new systems. Society will be restructured. It's deep within human nature to want to dominate, but Barbara believes that a New Human is emerging. There's a new pattern of social organization that is more synergistic and cooperative. Each of us carries within an image of something we haven't fully seen – very similar to the imaginal cells which aid the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Each person has a higher intelligence, and we can tune in to these higher frequencies. Barbara also talks about inspired politics and how the New Politics relate to the New Person. This can be a time of an uprising of the spirit of impulse and creativity. If you feel the desire to express more, affirm it as good, then reach out to others. Express your desire to create until you can find a team. She also talks about being 15 years old and seeing the atomic bomb. That started her on her quest for understanding and the study of world religions. The meaning of our power is to gain consciousness and expand evolution. We must connect conscious humans and their projects and determine what is working. Evolution is the expression of universal intelligence. Barbara has been called “the voice for conscious evolution of our time” by Dr. Deepak Chopra and is the subject of Neale Donald Walsch's book “The Mother of Invention.” A world-renowned visionary futurist, evolutionary educator, and inspiring speaker, Barbara is the author of six acclaimed books that communicate the new worldview of conscious evolution. She is the co-founder and chair of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution, and additionally co-founded many progressive organizations, including The Association for Global New Thought, and The World Future Society.  Barbara's latest book at the time of this interview is “Birth 2012 and Beyond: Humanity's Great Shift to the Age of Conscious Evolution.” Info: barbaramarxhubbard.com.

In Against the New Politics of Identity, philosopher Ronald A. Lindsay offers a sustained criticism of the far-reaching cultural transformation occurring across much of the West by which individuals are defined primarily by their group identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Driven largely by the political Left, this transformation has led to the wholesale grouping of individuals into oppressed and oppressor classes in both theory and practice. He warns that the push for identity politics on the Left predictably elicits a parallel reaction from the Right, including the Right's own version of identity politics in the form of Christian nationalism. As Lindsay makes clear, the symbiotic relationship that has formed between these two political poles risks producing even deeper threats to Enlightenment values and Western democracy. If we are to preserve a liberal democracy in which the rights of individuals are respected, he concludes, the dogmas of identity politics must be challenged and refuted. Against the New Politics of Identity offers a principled path for doing so. Shermer and Lindsay discuss: identity politics: identity or politics? • woke ideology • overt racism vs. systemic racism • liberalism vs. illiberalism • woke progressive leftists motivations? • Critical Race Theory (CRT) • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) • What is progressive? What is woke? • standpoint epistemology • equality vs. equity • race • class • cancel culture • Christian nationalism. Dr. Ronald Lindsay, a philosopher (PhD, Georgetown University) and lawyer (JD, University of Virginia) is the author of The Necessity of Secularism and Future Bioethics. Although his non-fiction works focus on different topics, two threads unite them: Lindsay's gift for thinking critically about accepted narratives and his strong commitment to individual rights, whether it's the right to assisted dying, the right to religious freedom, or the right of individuals to be judged on their own merit, as opposed to their group identity. In addition to his books, Lindsay has also written numerous philosophical and legal essays, including the entry on Euthanasia in the International Encyclopedia of Ethics. In his spare time, Lindsay plays baseball—baseball, not softball. The good news is he maintains a batting average near .300; the bad news is his fielding average is not much higher. A native of Boston, Ron Lindsay currently lives in Loudoun County, Virginia with his wife, Debra, where their presence is usually tolerated by their cat. His new book is: Against the New Politics of Identity: How the Left's Dogmas on Race and Equity Harm Liberal Democracy and Invigorate Christian Nationalism.

We witness the climate crisis every day. Unfolding on our news feeds, impacting our communities, and undeniably causing unfathomable, inequitable harm across the planet. We lament the lack of urgency in our political leaders and even find ourselves frustrated by complacency in the public's push for climate action. But we truly are in a transformative moment - though how we meet this moment remains uncertain.  The changing politics of our time is the focus of Ajay Singh Chaudhary's new book, The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics In A Burning World. Narratives about work and the “good life”: A Conversation with Christine Jeske

One of the many fairy tales hegemonically attached to the world of work in capitalist economies is that all one need do is get a job and work hard, and those things will automatically lead to "the good life." But what, exactly, is the good life? Is it a universal term or does it mean different things to different people in different places? What are the narratives attached to the "good life" and what are the narratives that come into play when the fairy tale does not come true? Finally, what happens when employers and employees have different ideas about the role of work in worker's lives? In this brief, free-wheeling conversation, I discuss these questions and more with Dr. Christine Jeske, author of The Laziness Myth. Dr. Christine Jeske is an associate professor of anthropology at Wheaton College. Prior to coming to Wheaton, Christine worked in microfinance, refugee resettlement, community development, and teaching while living in Nicaragua, Northwest China, and South Africa. Christine is the author of three books and many articles for popular and academic audiences. Her most recent book, The Laziness Myth, considers what makes work desirable, how racism shapes work, and how people find hope in undesirable working conditions. https://econanthro.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/ChristineJeske.mp3 References: The Laziness Myth: Narratives of Work and the Good Life in South Africa by Christine Jeske Jeske, C. 2018. Moderated by Wendy Pearlman, author of We Crossed a Bridge and it Trembled: Voices from Syria and Danny Postel, co-editor of The Syria Dilemma and The People Reloaded, this dialogue will explore the origins and trajectory of the Syrian uprising, the internal and external forces that thwarted it, what comes next in the quest of emancipatory change, what lessons the Syrian experience might have for other struggles, and what lessons other struggles might have for Syria. This public event is co-sponsored by Northwestern University's Middle East and North African Studies Program, New Lines Magazine, and Haymarket Books. In part one (which, if you haven't listened to, we'd recommend you go back and do), Mark and his guests discussed how growth models are almost like the business model for a country. But of course, countries don't exist in isolation. They can rise and fall together, and operate as regional economies tied into wider global networks. So…what do growth models look like at scale? How should we even think about them? To explore this concept, Mark spoke with two contributors to the book. The private-sale loophole that allows "collectors" in the US to sell guns without requiring identification, background checks, or paperwork — often to criminals and cartels at a tidy profit. How "straw buyers" — that is, people with clean records — are paid by gun traffickers to pass background checks and buy firearms en masse without raising any red flags. If they are arrested in the act, however, their punishment rarely exceeds probation. There are 130,000 licensed firearms dealers in the US from which ill-intentioned gun traffickers can make their shady purchases. If that doesn't sound like that many, consider that there are only 14,000 McDonald's restaurants. Thanks to a Reagan-era law enacted ostensibly to protect the privacy of gun owners, the ATF finds its ability to efficiently trace guns hobbled because it can't use searchable, digital databases of sales.
