In the past few years there have been countless and countless examples of how gender has shaped our conversation, and how a lot of men and society are working to have this conversation around masculinity. #MeToo has ignited that conversation ten fold. For this episode I wanted to go back to those instances and talk about that......but then a perfect little storm happened when Gillette focused their new ad campaign tackling Toxic Masculinity We will explore the ad and the discussion around it with Al Harris, Nick Sandor, and Elliott Tanti.
WE'RE BACK! After a couples weeks off Jordan welcomes ELLIOTT TANTI to this weeks episode! Elliott is a podcaster, a political observer, and a community organizer! Elliott co-hosts the podcasts THE HIGHLEVEL SHOWDOWN & HATTRICK SPORTS He also servers as an Associate Producer of this show. Today he shares his thoughts on podcasting, ways to stay positive in the Trump era and a look at his life and background.
On today’s show, we go a little more personal, and speak directly about Elliott and Michael’s background as first-generation Canadians and how their family households made them unique participants in the line for political commentators. How their dads set them up to be more sensitive and vulnerable males, and how they enjoy each other as male friends. Not only that we speak to the masculinity and politics of Justin Trudeau, and the way some conservatives have pegged liberal masculinity. Particularly around the word “cuck” That and a lot more in my second part of talking to Elliott Tanti and Michael Vecchio from The Highlevel Showdown You can find Michael and Elliott on Twitter @highlevelshowdown and I will put their personal accounts in the shownotes which you can find at modernmanhood.org. Also check out the Patreon page at patreon.com/modernmanpod. You can find MMP in iTunes, Stitcher, or anywhere you find awesome podcasts. If you want to be a guest of the show, send me a line @modernmanpod on Twitter and Instagram, or find me on Facebook at Modern Manhood: The Podcast.
I started listening to The Highlevel Showdown, a local politics show with two guys, Elliott Tanti and Michael Vecchio, from opposite sides of the political view talk about what the heck is going on in the world of politics. Now, lucky for me they also were curious about questions of manhood, and questions in how masculinity works in politics as much as I did. Even more lucky for me, they were curious about their own masculinity, and how their lives intertwined as immigrants, first generation Canadians (like they are), and most importantly as long time friends. Now because I had a lot to ask of them and the conversation was flowing I decided to split this into two parts. The first part you’ll hear right now is Elliott, Michael, and myself talking about what was going on with the intersection of politics and masculinity which involves, yep, Donald Trump. But we also talk local politics and specifically the struggles that women have to get into politics, be heard, and the harassment they face. Check all episodes of the podcast at modernmanhood.org

Meet Elliott Tanti and Michael Vecchio, two friends who started sparring about politics for fun and decided to turn their frequent debates into the Highlevel Showdown podcast. Highlevel Showdown started in the Tory Building at the University of Alberta, where Elliott and Michael found themselves engaging in political discussions that spilled over onto the LRT on the way home. Elliott had done a podcast called What's Up UAlberta, and it felt natural to capture the conversations they were already having. A terrific politics podcast was born. In this episode, you'll hear how the show has changed over the past two years; how kitchen-table debates prepared them for political argument; how to prepare for a structured but vibrant discussion; what opera, wrestling and politics have in common; how the show benefits from Elliott's campaign experience and Michael's historical knowledge; the coming municipal election; and how to make a podcast with a friend. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Michael and Elliott made the following recommendations: NewsWired, a discussion of current events distributed on Guerrilla Radio; The Modern Manhood Podcast, German Villegas's interview show exploring different facets of masculinity; The Broadcast, the show about women and politics in Alberta with Alex Zabjek and Trisha Estabrooks; daveberta, Dave Cournoyer's long-running blog about politics in Alberta; The Casual, Nate Villegas's podcast about forgotten flicks. You can also read Michael's thoughts on movies and pop culture at Before the Cyborgs, and you can hear Elliott's thoughts on sports from time to time on Hat Trick Sports. They are also on Twitter: @tanti90 and @michaelvecchio2. You can also follow the Highlevel Showdown on Twitter and Facebook, and find it on iTunes and Guerrilla Radio. Michael and Elliott are kind enough to shout out to the Seen and Heard Podcast Network. Stay tuned for some exciting network news in the coming weeks. The next episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton will be delayed by a week — watch for it on May 8. You can experience the next episode in real life on April 30 at our podcasting meetup, featuring Fawnda Mithrush of NorthwestFest, which is putting on a mini-podcast-orama in conjunction with the documentary film festival in May. The Highlevel Showdown is a weekly politics podcast hosted by Elliott Tanti and Michael Vecchio. Each week they debate the latest stories in civic, provincial, national and international politics and cut through the spin to bring their audience some insight into exactly what is going on in the side show that is Canadian politics.
