In this episode, Jill shares excerpts from one of her favorites books ~ Gift From The Sea, By Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Written in 1955, the musings from Anne's philosophical metaphors of how seashells mirror one's soul, is relatable even decades later. “Lindbergh shares with her readers her awareness of the many frustrating elements we face today: The restlessness, the unending pressures and demands, the denial of leisure and silence, the threat to inner peace and integration, the uneasy balance of the opposites.” Listen in as all things “philosophical”… creatively mix and mingle.Obtain your own copy of the book that Jill read from:Gift from the Sea - Originally Published 1955Gift from the Sea - 50th Anniversary EditionJill is an Intuitive, Reiki Master Teacher, Shamanic Practitioner, Writer & Artist. You can reach Jill at: naturalmysticism.com for Intuitive, Shamanic, and Reiki Services & Events. For podcast updates, Guest Requests, and archived episodes, go to: helloinneryou.comIf you can, please rate, review, and follow the show ~ it helps others find Hello Inner You, and helps Jill keep the podcast going ~ Thank you!Jill's new book: The Joyful Creator ~ A Guide To Intuitive Communication with Nature Allies, Earth Wisdom, and Spiritual Helpers is available on Amazon.Thank you to CJ ~ my Associate Producer & Better Half ~ without his techno babble know-how this show would not be possible.Disclaimer: Information shared by Guests of the Hello Inner You Podcast is for information purposes only, and should not replace medical or mental health services. Dr. Ruth shared her diary for the first time with the Leo Baeck Institute – and with all of you – for this episode of Exile. We are grateful for her generosity with her time and her story – and for the decades of sound advice. Learn more at www.lbi.org/westheimer. The Albert Einstein Collections in the Archives of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York include hundreds of Einstein's personal photographs, many from Caputh, as well as the Guestbook from his summer home. As we prepare our fifth season of Exile, we're looking back at our favorite episodes from seasons 1-4. Each re-release brings back a unique, fascinating, and often heart-wrenching story from the Leo Baeck Institute Archives. A young, Jewish librarian in New York named Florence Mendheim risks her life to spy on the growing Nazi movement in America. As Nazism becomes a gathering storm, will she get out of the spy game before she's caught? The Florence Mendheim Collection in the Archives of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York contains: her reports and correspondence with the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue and the American Jewish Congress, American pro-Nazi and white supremacist propaganda she collected during her spy work, her personal letters, and some of Florence's unpublished novels. White.Max studied classics and theatre at Beloit College, received their MA in Theology and the Arts from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. They are the author of The(y)ology: Mythopoetics for Queer/Trans Liberation with Punctum Press and the collection of poems Visions of Divine Love with AC Books, which brings together Julian of Norwich with Divine the Drag Queen. One of his best known is the first of the series, The Sword in the Stone, which was published as a stand-alone book in 1938. When a queer book elevates our own expectations of ourselves and moves us to honor ourselves by saying: we deserve something more.Today we meet Blair Fell and we're talking about the queer book that saved his life: The Persian Boy by Mary Renault.Blair Fell's television work includes Queer as Folk, and the Emmy Award–winning California Connected. He's written dozens of plays including the award-winning plays Naked Will and the downtown cult miniseries Burning Habits. He's a two-time winner of the prestigious Doris Lippman Prize in Creative Writing from the City College of New York. His first novel The Sign For Home was long-listed by the Center For Fiction's First Book Award. His upcoming novel Disco Witches of Fire Island comes out May 6, 2025.Mary Renault was a British lesbian writer famed for her historically precise novels of the ancient world, including The Last of the Wine (1956), Fire From Heaven (1969), and The Persian Boy (1972). US publishers initially refused to publish her novel The Charioteer due to its positive portrayal of homosexuality and its happy ending. It was eventually published in 1959 and was a bestseller. The Persian Boy traces the last years of Alexander's life through the eyes of his lover, Bagoas. Abducted and gelded as a boy, Bagoas was sold as a courtesan to King Darius of Persia, but found freedom with Alexander after the Macedon army conquered his homeland. Their relationship sustains Alexander as he weathers assassination plots. After Alexander's mysterious death, we are left wondering if this Persian boy understood the great warrior better than anyone.Connect with Blairwebsite: blairfell.combluesky: @blairfell.bsky.socialinstagram: @blair.fellOur BookshopVisit our Bookshop for new releases, current bestsellers, banned books, critically acclaimed LGBTQ books, or peruse the books featured on our podcasts: bookshop.org/shop/thisqueerbookBuy your own copy of The Persian Boy: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780394751016Pre-order Disco Witches of Fire Island (arrives May 6, 2025): https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9798892420341Buy The Sign For Home: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781982175962Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Is the Department of Government Efficiency a strategy to reinvent white supremacy and deny the American dream to black men and women? On this episode of the The Neoliberal Round Podcast Renaldo McKenzie, Author of Neoliberalism, Creator and Host of The Neoliberal Round shares his short blog responding to this question. Elon Musk finds it noteworthy that nearly 160,000 federal civil service workers are now millionaires. This is reported by Amuse. Shouldn't we be celebrating that under President Joe Biden, many federal workers—who are American citizens—have achieved the American Dream? Why is this a problem for Musk, Donald Trump, and their supporters? Is the goal to strip these individuals of their wealth simply because they worked for the government? It's worth noting that Musk himself has grown even richer under Biden's administration. The real issue seems to be that Black people have also attained wealth. For decades, federal employment has been one of the few reliable paths to economic stability and success for Black Americans. Now, there appears to be a deliberate effort to dismantle this pathway. The recent push to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives under the guise of “efficiency” seems less about improving government operations. It seems more about rolling back progress. By targeting DEI hires, the goal appears to be a return to an America where wealth and power are concentrated among white men.The firing of the only woman general and the second Black general in the name of “efficiency” raises serious concerns. Is this truly about performance, or is it a strategic move to reinforce systemic inequalities? If these trends continue, they will not only harm Black Americans but also women, people of color, and anyone who does not fit the narrow mold of privilege. This is not just about economics—it is about the very fabric of the American Dream.Submitted by Rev. Renaldo C. McKenzie, Author of Neoliberalism, Globalization, Income Inequality, Poverty and Resistance, available at The Neoliberal Store https://store.theneoliberal.com or via Amazon and Barnes and Noble.Renaldo also discusses a recent poll by Stephen A Smith asking if the Eagles should go to the White House. This Money Tales episode is all about how the messages we learn in our youth and the experiences we have with money as we're growing up shape and orient our relationship to money. Our guest this week is Sue Bevan Baggott. Growing up with home haircuts and hand-sewn clothes, Sue learned early the value of frugality. But it was her and her husband's decision to live on one salary while investing the other that laid the groundwork for Sue to transition from corporate executive to purpose-driven angel investor working to close the gender gap in startup funding. As a human-centered Executive Advisor and Innovation Catalyst, Sue is passionate about empowering leaders to create positive impact, accelerate life-improving innovation and invest for impactful changes in our world. In her career journey from global innovation leader at Procter & Gamble (growing mega-brands from Pantene to Pampers), to Founder of Power Within Consulting, to “Accidental” Angel Investor and Startup Advisor, Sue learned to leverage the power of human-first strategies to accelerate leadership, innovation, business, and entrepreneurial success. Sue strives to unleash people's purpose-driven power as leaders, innovators, and investors to drive positive change – through her speaking, writing, consulting, and advisory/board roles. Through multiple early-stage funds, Sue invests in the change she wants to see in the world with a diverse portfolio of innovative startups solving significant world problems at scale. As an Associate Producer for the award-winning documentary, Show Her the Money, Sue advocates for greater inclusion in the startup world, aiming to encourage more people to invest for change and elevate entrepreneurial success for under-represented founders.

Ok, I've started to embody my transness. Now what?Today we meet Seth Anderson-Matz and we're talking about the queer book that saved his life: The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You by S. Bear Bergman. And Bear joins us for the conversation!Seth Anderson-Matz is a queer & trans community organizer and minister. He has lived and worked in the Twin Cities area all his life, and currently resides in South Minneapolis with his wife (Jenn), one big dog (Roxie), one tiny dog (Saul), and one weird cat (Lucy).S. Bear Bergman is the author of nine books, founder of Flamingo Rampant press, and frequent consultant in equity and inclusion to business and government. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Avery Moore Kloss. Have you ever been in a place where you knew deep down something had to change, but fear kept holding you back? That's exactly where Avery found herself, watching her husband, an entrepreneur at heart, slowly lose his spark in the corporate grind post-pandemic. Avery candidly shares how she wrestled with the fear of losing financial stability, realizing that she was the one holding him back from his dreams. In this episode, we dive into the moment she finally said to her husband, 'Just quit the job. We'll figure it out.' Avery Moore Kloss is the founder and lead creator of Folktale Studio. As a journalist, educator, entrepreneur, podcast host and award-winning radio documentarian, Avery's passion is in helping others capture their stories through audio. With Folktale Studio, Avery is committed to helping up-and-coming digital storytellers create podcasts that connect their unique stories with the world. As the host of the podcast “Grown Up,” Avery dives deep into the unconventional career journeys of her guests, exploring how they've navigated the twists and turns of the working world. It's a show about finding your way—even if that way looks nothing like what you expected. When she's not crafting podcasts, Avery teaches Audio Storytelling at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she also serves as the Podcaster-in-Residence. In her classes and office hours, she empowers the next generation of digital storytellers to embrace creativity, curiosity, and authenticity in their work. Avery is a proud graduate of Carleton University's School of Journalism and Communications, holding a combined honours degree in Journalism and History. Her storytelling journey began as a casual Associate Producer at CBC Ottawa before taking her to Portland, Maine, to study radio documentary at The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies (now part of the Maine College of Art). It was there that Avery discovered the art of long-form audio storytelling, a love that continues to shape her career. Her dedication to storytelling excellence earned her the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award in 2011 for “My Name is Meth,” an in-depth series exploring the growing crystal meth crisis in rural Ontario. Avery lives in Paris, Ontario, with her husband and daughter. When she's not behind the mic, you can find her enjoying the simple joys of small-town life, dreaming up her next big story, or sharing quiet moments with family.

Marcia Dawood, an experienced investor and advocate for small business capital formation, is on a mission to change that perception. In today's episode, she shared how equity crowdfunding has made it possible for anyone to invest in startups and drive meaningful change.Marcia has been an angel investor for over a decade and served as chair of the Angel Capital Association. She now sits on the Securities and Exchange Commission's Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee, working to ensure small businesses have a voice in regulatory decisions.During our conversation, she reflected on the transformative power of equity crowdfunding. "Back in 2016, when the SEC changed the rules, it became possible for anyone to invest in startups for as little as $50," she said. "But not enough people know about it. The potential for impact is enormous."Marcia's journey into angel investing began with a simple invitation to an investor meeting. At first, she assumed it was a world reserved for the rich and well-connected. But as she listened to entrepreneurs share their visions for changing the world, she realized she could be part of it. “I thought, ‘Where have I been?' I had no idea this was happening,” she recalled. “I started to see how powerful investing could be as a force for good.”Today, Marcia is committed to making investing more inclusive. She highlights that platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine have made startup investing transparent and accessible. "Everything is disclosed on the platform—CEOs can't have side conversations with select investors. That levels the playing field," she explained. One of her biggest concerns is the lack of funding for women-led startups. "Women make up about half the population, but they receive just two to three percent of venture funding. That has to change," she emphasized. By encouraging more people—especially women—to invest, Marcia believes equity crowdfunding can reshape the entrepreneurial landscape. For those hesitant to take the leap into impact investing, her advice is simple: start by observing. "Take your time, look around, and learn. See which companies align with your values. Then, when you're ready, take that first step."Marcia's message is clear: investing isn't just about financial returns—it's about fueling innovation and creating a better world. By lowering barriers to entry, equity crowdfunding is opening the doors for everyone to be part of that change.tl;dr:* Marcia Dawood discusses how equity crowdfunding is expanding access to capital for underrepresented founders and everyday investors.* She shares her journey into angel investing and how it has become a powerful tool for impact.* Marcia highlights the importance of transparency and accessibility in platforms like Republic, WeFunder, and StartEngine.* She explains the need for more investment in women-led startups and the potential for crowdfunding to bridge the gap.* Marcia identifies decisiveness and resourcefulness as her superpowers, offering actionable tips for making better decisions and solving problems efficiently. How to Develop Decisiveness and Resourcefulness As a SuperpowerMarcia Dawood has honed two superpowers that have propelled her success: decisiveness and resourcefulness. "I've had people tell me that if they were in a crisis, they'd want to stand next to me," she said in today's episode. Whether in angel investing, business, or personal life, she has built a reputation for making quick, confident decisions and creatively solving problems. One of the most powerful examples of her decisiveness came during the pandemic. She shared the story of JoyLux, a startup whose CEO immediately pivoted when faced with financial uncertainty. Instead of waiting for conditions to improve, the company quickly adjusted its strategy, engaged investors, and ensured financial stability. "That kind of decisiveness can be the difference between survival and failure," Marcia explained. For those looking to develop decisiveness, Marcia offers practical advice:* Identify the Core Decision – Clarify what needs to be decided and focus on key factors.* Seek Input, but Don't Overanalyze – Consult trusted sources, but avoid analysis paralysis.* Take Ownership – Make a choice and commit to it, rather than second-guessing.* Learn from Decisions – Reflect on past choices to improve future decision-making.* Act with Confidence – Recognize that no decision is perfect, but moving forward is better than inaction.By following Marcia's example and advice, you can make decisiveness and resourcefulness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make them a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMarcia Dawood (she/her):Advisor on the Small Business Capital Formation Committee - Vice Chair, TEDx Speaker, Podcast Host, Author, Associate Producer, Helping people learn to Do Good while Doing Well, U.S. Securities and Exchange CommissionAbout U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: The SEC Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee was established by the SEC Small Business Advocate Act of 2016, and is designed to provide a formal mechanism for the Commission to receive advice and recommendations on Commission rules, regulations and policy matters relating to small businesses, including smaller public companies. Editors - Brett W. Bachman, ACE and Josh Ethier, ACE Long time friends, but first time co-editors, Brett and Josh are no strangers to working in the horror/thriller genre. The same can't be said for COMPANION director Drew Hancock. Not only was this film Hancock's first feature as a director, but it was also his first real foray into genre filmmaking. But that didn't stop either Brett or Josh from seeing how good this film was going to be right from the script. What they couldn't predict, was how great a working experience the whole thing would be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, COMPANION stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin that unravels into violence amid revelations that one of the guests is what's known as a companion robot. Inspire: The Universal Path for Leading Yourself and Others by Adam Galinsky Amazon.com Two kinds of leaders populate the world: those who inspire and those who infuriate. Which will you be? Whether you're a leader, a member of a team, a spouse, or a parent, this engaging and rigorous exploration unpacks the science of inspiration. Through compelling stories, fascinating research, and practical tips for addressing the common dilemmas we face daily, Inspire reveals how all of us, regardless of status or circumstance, can be more inspiring more often. Social psychologist and leadership expert Adam Galinsky has spent three decades building a method for determining when we are inspiring versus infuriating, and where various leaders—presidents, CEOs, coaches, teachers, parents, and a wealth of others—currently land on that spectrum. Galinsky shows how inspiring leaders can fill us with a wellspring of hope and possibility as they guide us to become better versions of ourselves. In contrast, infuriating leaders disappoint and annoy, fueling seething cauldrons of rage. But both types of leaders are deeply connected—together, they represent a universal continuum that is rooted in the very architecture of the human brain. This means that inspiring leaders aren't born—instead, we can inspire or infuriate in any given moment through our behavior, words, or presence. In this captivating book, Galinsky identifies the three universal archetypes of truly great leaders and explains how each of us can develop these characteristics within ourselves to become more inspiring: Visionaries offer a big-picture, optimistic, and engaging vision of the future; Exemplars are courageous and calm protectors who authentically express their passion while remaining consistent in word and deed; Mentors encourage, empower, and elevate others while challenging them to reach their potential. Inspire is an essential guide to becoming not only a better leader but also an effective decision-maker, a dynamic problem-solver, a value-creating negotiator, and an inclusive innovator. About the author Adam Galinsky is one of the world's foremost scholars in the fields of management and social psychology. He was recently selected as one of the World's 50 Best B-School Professors. He is currently the Vikram S. Pandit Professor of Business and Chair of the Management Division at the Columbia Business School at Columbia University. He has published more than 190 scientific papers about a diverse range of topics: leadership, power, negotiations, decision-making, diversity, and ethics. Frequently cited in the media, his research and insights have appeared in The Economist, The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Public Radio, and Wall Street Journal, among others. In 2006 he was the sole expert witness in a defamation trial, in which the plaintiff that he represented was awarded $37 million in damages. He is the Associate Producer on two award-winning documentaries, Horns and Halos (2003) and Battle for Brooklyn (2011), both of which were short-listed (final 15) for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards.
Olivia Hussey, whose spirited portrayal of Juliet when she was just a teenager herself became iconic for generations of people watching the 1968 film adaptation of Shakespeare's play, died on December 27, 2024. In 2019, we were lucky enough to record an interview with Hussey. To honor her life and work, we're bringing it to you again. Olivia Hussey was just fifteen when Franco Zeffirelli cast her in Romeo and Juliet. When the film was released in October 1968, it catapulted her and Leonard Whiting, the young actor playing Romeo, to global stardom. For many Shakespeare lovers, Zeffirelli's film is still the definitive film adaptation of the play. Fifty years after the movie's release, Hussey's memoir, The Girl on the Balcony: Olivia Hussey Finds Life After Romeo and Juliet, told the story of the actress's life before, during, and after Romeo and Juliet. We talked with Hussey and asked her how she felt about Shakespeare before making the movie (“very boring”), filming the balcony scene (“I'd bump my teeth into his chin”), the endless press tour, and whether she'd do it all again. Barbara Bogaev interviews Olivia Hussey. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Originally published on January 22, 2019, and rebroadcast on January 13, 2025 © Folger Shakespeare Library.
