Hello there everybody,   Welcome back to The Big Year Podcast. This is part 2 of my chat with the new all time record holder for a Canada Big Year, Bruce DiLabio.  As I type this, it's a sunny spring day in late March and the excitement of migration season is just around the corner.  It's what all birders crave after a long, cold winter in the northern US and Canada. However, for those in the southern US, migration gets going an about month earlier.  And one of the best places to be in April is Texas and specifically, High Island on the Gulf Coast, where spring storms can bring the holy grail of migration season, a Fall Out. Sue and I will be heading there the second weekend of April and fallout or not, it's one of the best places to see southern migrants passing through on their way home to their breeding grounds.  I've experienced two fallouts. The first was at Fort DeSoto near Tampa Florida in April of 2012 and Sue and I enjoyed one in Rondeau Provincial Park in South Western Ontario in May of 2018.  On both occasions, warblers and other songbirds were sitting, exhausted, like Christmas ornaments on all the trees.  Not just a Kaleidoscope of color, but even carpeting the ground, forcing birders to gingerly step over and around them.  And for Big Year birders, it's an event not to be missed.  I'll be reporting live from Texas beginning April 10, and perhaps I'll run into a birder or two doing their own Big Years. In Part One, I left you hanging, so we'll pick up where we left off, with Bruce Di Labio heading out for his 53rd consecutive Ottawa Christmas Bird Count when things took a very unexpected turn. I hope you enjoy listening to Bruce's stories of his amazing, record shattering Canada Big Year.  Having enjoyed many of the same adventures, including my own slip on the ice in Nova Scotia, that could have brought my Canada Big Year to a crashing end only 3 days into 2022, I can appreciate all Bruce went through in 2023. Congratulations Bruce.  And good luck to anyone attempting their own Canada Big Year in future.  Next month, we have a guest from out west.  Krissi Martin,(Sorry I said “Kristi” last month).  Krissi lives in Abbotsford British Columbia and is known on line as Momma Birder.  Krissi is very open about living life after a brain injury, and like many of us, has discovered that birding has had a very positive impact on her life.  We'll talk about that and the Big Years she's done in British Columbia and how birding in general and Big Years in particular can improve your well being and outlook on life.  Following my chat with Bruce, I'll leave you with a brief excerpt from my conversation with Krissi Martin.

In The Fotobug continuing series on places to photograph in Florida, don't overlook Fort DeSoto in St. Petersburg.  Fort DeSoto is a Pinellas County park and is named after the Fort that was built there in the late 1800s to protect Tampa Bay but was never involved in any battles.  However, it is one of the best birding spots in Florida, especially in the Spring and Fall.  It is also one of the few places to spot the white morph reddish egret! Not much in current photographic news, but the Black Hills Photo Shootout registration is now available!  The Shootout will again be the last weekend in September and will take place in Sturgis South Dakota and a special event on Friday at 1880 Town.  Fred and Jim are conducting a pre-workshop at Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota September 22-24th and the spots are filling up quick - on the registration page it is labeled Dakota Adventure - so please go a sign up now! It was a long weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida, as Christopher Balzano and Natalie Crist headed across the dreaded Skyway Bridge to Fort Desoto to follow up on the haunted legends there. Natalie takes to the water to try and hook the ghost of the Romantic Trout Fisherman. While she’s putting her moves on the spirit world, Balzano takes to the battery of the fort to check out rumors of footsteps and shadows. As the sun sets on the base, they venture to the outskirts and ruins of the old base to try and connect with the dozens who have died of yellow fever and are said to still walk the grounds, including a mother rumored to be heard crying for her dead children. What would it take for you to date a ghost? Before their upcoming visit to Fort DeSoto, Christopher Balzano and Natalie Crist look into some of the legend that keep popping up from the location. From crying ghostly mothers to phantom voices of Native Americans and soldiers to ghostly visions of accidents and suicides from the nearby Skyway Bridge, this may be the single most haunted place in Florida. And then there is the ghost of a dead fisherman who looks to pick up single ladies on the island. After some delay in starting our trip South due to poor weather/road conditions, we got under way in -3 degree weather at home. Just a few days later we had made the journey south where the weather turned out to be very nice thus making the trip worth the effort. Our first stop was in Fort Desoto county park near St. Pete. A wonderful campground offering sites on the ocean and one of the great beaches of Florida. We headed off to Fort Wilderness at Disney World. Quite a different experience but quite nice also. As you would expect this campground is well organized with uniform sites and amenities. It has all of the services of a Disney property including site cleaning prior to guests arrival. After a few days in the park, we headed to the Tampa RV Super Show to see the latest in RVs and related stuff. In this episode we talk about the new RVs on display (1300 of em).
