This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you'll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle's genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill's "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world's a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Meghan Patrick's Golden Child is the most raw, powerful album that she has ever created. It reveals her journey from surviving an abusive relationship to cutting ties with her toxic mother. Tracks like “Blood From a Stone” and “Whether You Love Me or Not” showcase her fight for self-worth, while “The Boy Who Cried Drunk” and “This Town” expose the harsh realities of love and chasing dreams in Nashville. With this album, Meghan not only shares her story but also raises awareness for domestic abuse survivors—proving she's a force to be reckoned with.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After the demise of the mighty Ramones there was a huge hole left in the fun-punk sub-genre. However, youngest member CJ (this fans' second fave Ramones dude (after Johnny)) stepped up and provided starving punk rockers with some great material that would have easily fit on latter era Ramones albums. So here we celebrate that material with 40 minutes of the best CJ Ramone solo material. Gabba gabba, we accept you, we accept you, one of us!!! Side One Understand Me? Kyle Keller is the Americana/folk artist you wish you had discovered sooner. His rolling melodies and potent lyrics will leave you questioning every moment since you last heard his growling bass vocals. Kyle's self-described “sad songs” are raw, unfiltered, and distinctly relatable. His ability to take you on a discovery of emotion through story-telling is entirely unrivaled.“Kyle Keller is that kind of folk artist that is actually worthy of the name. He is a communicator, a story teller, and a prophet of sorts. He approaches songs in the same way as every good folk and blues singer of old, with a message. I have had the joy of following Kyle over the last few years, and I have seen him blossom into one of the finest young lyricists that I know. I travel to songwriter events all over this country, and to find a poet of his caliber is rare… not to mention a poet of his age. Kyle has a voice that reminds me of the great Townes Van Zandt. Not in its tone, but in the way that it fits his material. Kyle has developed a style around his voice. That is not easy to do. His writing is reminiscent of John Moreland's, but with the heart of Dylan. It is emotional, and confrontational. It speaks to today. It is current. It is important. He is like a modern Guthrie, and it would behoove you to acquaint yourself with his art.” -Abe PartridgeThe Great American Highway is a traveler's record and a road record if there ever was one… The album is filled with important little affirmations about being yourself and following your heart, regardless of the often superficial or adverse outcomes, with the most important thing being that you endure and hold onto yourself, at least until you die with a life fulfilled from following your purpose. There are also some important ruminations on the nature of time and not allowing oneself to waste it by doing things you don't want to do… Kyle Keller invokes the most severe aspects of Hank Williams and Edgar Allan Poe in the pretty devastating “This Town's Gonna Swallow You Whole.” Then he takes it even further in the final song on the album about losing someone you love, “Why Would God Steal?” Overall, this is a moody and gloomy work, though one that searches and yearns for inner peace, while also conferring and appreciation for life's bounties and discovery. 8/10″ –Kyle “Trigger” Coroneos, Saving Country Musichttps://kylekellermusic.bandcamp.comhttps://www.instagram.com/kylekellermusic/https://www.youtube.com/@UC1zi7pQArSNOP_utk5GYD5g https://paintedladyrecords.ushttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5fsYHpNeJBGlsYTKte8g8O?si=hkCMShupTYOjc2M09pCnqQhttps://www.facebook.comcautionlightmedia/https://www.instagram.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/https://www.facebook.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/somethinginthewaterpodcast@gmail.comhttps://somethinginthewater.captivate.fmhttps://www.patreon.com/somethinginthewater

Indie rock outfit Beau Jennings & The Tigers present their new single 'People in This Town', out June 9 via Oklahoma-based record label Black Mesa Records. What starts as a scrappy ten seconds of scuffling and static emerges as a summer anthem from this Oklahoma band. With their classic 80's AM radio American rock n' roll sound filtered through their collective influences (gospel, country, folk, and indie rock), the single follows 2022's full-length album 'Heavy Light', which drew critical parallels to Tom Petty, The Wallflowers and Bruce Springsteen, and subsequent singles 'I've Got Your Heart Right Here' and 'Midnight Service'. Jennings' recording has just reached the two decade mark, in that time having collaborated with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift and filmmaker Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling) and shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Robert Cray, Heartless Bastards, Ray Wylie Hubbard and John Moreland. In this new single, Jennings imagines the patrons of a bar on the outskirts—inspired by a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it building in his hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. Having barely noticed it for much of his life, a recent drive nearby prompted Jennings to conjure the figures who might be congregating there. “'People In This Town' is really just about the overlooked or hidden aspects of a small town that are often taken for granted. Norman, OK is governed by religion, sports, and partying and while that maybe isn't that different from other places, those are still powerful forces that shape people's lives,” says Beau Jennings. #Music #Interviews #SocialMedia #Beau #America #Artists #BruceSpringsteen

I'm honored to talk to my great friend and podcasting partner on Knife Talk, Craig Lockwood about the debut of his new Single: “This Town”. You are reading that correctly.. Knife Maker, podcaster and now Recording Artist…Craig is a man of many talents and had the bucket list opportunity to record at the legendary studio Rockfield; home to Queen, David Bowie, Ozzy Osborn, Oasis, Coldplay and many more. How did this happen? We got into the anatomy of his song “This Town”, and got to hear the development with early sounds clips. How he met famed producer Nick Brine and incredible stories about Rockfield and how that recording studio embedded itself into rock history—-we fooled around a little at the end to. (This conversation originally aired on July 28, 2022) Welcome to this encore edition of Midday. Tom's guest for the hour is the award-winning author and journalist Mark Leibovich. He was the Chief National Correspondent for the New York Times for 10 years, before moving to The Atlantic this past spring. He's the author of four books, including the number one NY Times bestseller, This Town, in which he chronicles the incestuous relationship between Washington media and the political class. His latest book was number one on the bestseller list just two weeks after it was published in July. It examines the unprecedented and often inexplicable spell cast on the Republican party by Donald Trump, whose demands for fealty and obsequiousness know no bounds. As Leibovich deftly observes, official Washington not only curried favor with Mr. Trump, it groveled with a degree of servility unmatched in American political history. Leibovich offers an insightful glimpse into a world where Trump's supporters remain enthralled, despite the revelations of the January 6th Committee, or the ignominy that Trump continues to heap upon himself as he repeats, over and over, a medley of malicious lies about the election he lost. The book is called Thank You for Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission. Mark Leibovich joined us in July on Zoom from Washington, DC…See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a special two-part episode, John Heilemann talks with Mark Leibovich, former chief national correspondent for The New York Times Magazine, current staff writer for The Atlantic, and author of This Town, the iconic skewering of the culture of pre-Trump Washington, DC; and Tim Miller, former Republican strategist, current #NeverTrump gadfly-cum-firebrand, writer-at-large for The Bulwark, and host of Not My Party on Snap. Leibovich and Miller are also the authors of a pair of hot new books — Thank You For Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission and Why We Did It: A Travelogue from the Republican Road to Hell, respectively — that tell essentially the same tale from different sides of the looking glass: the story of "the supplicant fanboys" and "parasitic suck-ups" who "permitted Donald Trump's depravity to be inflicted on the rest of us" (Leibovich); of "the army of [GOP] consultants, politicians, media figures" who "recognized all the risks but still climbed aboard for a ride on the SS Trump Hellship" (Miller). Heilemann and the authors discuss the dom-sub nature of the relationship between Trump and Mike Pence, Lindsey Graham's soulless craving for proximity to power, Miller's own flirtation with the dark side, and the broader pattern of Republican complicity, corruption, and cowardice that enabled Trump's rise, his rule, and his violent plot to overturn a presidential election and trash American democracy ... all of which, terrifyingly, persists unabated to this day. In conversation with Tracey Matisak, award winning broadcaster and journalist Mark Leibovich's books include the No. 1 bestseller This Town, a ''vastly entertaining and deeply troubling'' (The New York Times Book Review) exploration of the political culture in Washington, D.C.; and Big Game, a beyond-the-playing-field analysis of professional football at its precarious economic and social peak. Former chief national correspondent for The New York Times Magazine and a former correspondent for The Washington Post, Leibovich recently joined The Atlantic as a staff writer and is a contributing political analyst for NBC and MSNBC. He won the 2011 National Magazine Award for his profile of journalist Mike Allen. A sequel to This Town, Thank You for Your Servitude is a no-holds-barred account of Donald Trump's collaboration with the Republican Party to transform the once-proud party into a cult of personality mired in corruption and anti-democratic values. If you were about to turn 50 and could go see five bands in concert, who would they be and why?As the Dads discuss this conundrum, they get distracted and end up talking about Sparks. Who is Sparks? Only one of the most influential bands of the past five decades. They've inspired Joy Division, Queen and Bjork, collaborated with Giorgio Morodor, Franz Ferdinand and members of the Go-Gos, and were even name checked in a Paul McCartney video. These two inscrutable brothers from Southern California have been one step ahead of the musical zeitgeist of the time for years.Come join The New Dad Rock and they explore Sparks. Mark Leibovich is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller This Town. His new book, Thank You for Your Servitude, DONALD TRUMP'S WASHINGTON AND THE PRICE OF SUBMISSION is the eyewitness account of how the GOP collaborated with Donald Trump to transform Washington's “swamp” into a gold-plated hot tub—and a onetime party of rugged individualists into a sycophantic personality cult. When GOP Rep. Liz Cheney decided to risk everything politically and serve on Nancy Pelosi's newly created Jan. 6 investigative panel in the spring of last year, she made something of a vow to herself, according to people close with the Wyoming Republican: She would follow the facts wherever they went, and privately press for the panel to leave no stone unturned to get to the truth of the siege of the Capitol. No half-baked probes. No shrinking away from key witnesses, as Democrats had done in their past impeachments of Donald Trump. If she was going to do this, she was going to go all the way — even as some members of the panel, we heard back then, didn't even want to investigate Trump's actions that day. On Thursday, Washington saw the latest fruits of Cheney's labor, when the Jan. 6 committee shocked This Town and subpoenaed five House GOP lawmakers to testify — including the likely next speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Well-placed sources tell us that Cheney — who was booted from her post as No. 3 Republican in the House one year to the day before the subpoenas were issued — was among those pressing hardest for this move, arguing that these GOP members had relevant information and they couldn't just let them skirt without questioning.
