At some point in every birder's life the idea of doing a Big Year pops into their head. But a true Big Year can be grueling, and Brandon and the Old Naturalist ain't about that. Listen in to this conversation in which the boys discussed the possibilities of the Lazy Big Year!
Benieuwd? What if we could recycle just half of the plastic currently going to landfills? The answer: 173,000 new jobs, nearly $50 billion in economic output, and a stronger American manufacturing base.In this episode of Sustainably Speaking, host Mia Quinn welcomes back Ross Eisenberg, president of America's Plastic Makers, for a wide-ranging conversation on why recycling is no longer just an environmental issue—it's an economic and manufacturing opportunity hiding in plain sight.Ross highlights what's actually working in recycling today, from large-scale facilities turning plastic into new products to advanced technologies that can recover materials once thought to be unrecyclable. He explains why the idea that “recycling doesn't work” is one of the biggest myths holding back progress. The conversation also tackles the policy choices shaping the future of recycling, including:Why flexible, technology-neutral policies matter more than one-size-fits-all mandatesHow mass balance works (and why it's similar to Fair Trade coffee)What states are getting right—and wrong—on Extended Producer ResponsibilityWhy a federal definition of advanced recycling as manufacturing could unlock investment nationwideLooking ahead, Ross shares what success could look like, from scaling U.S. recycling infrastructure to reaching a global plastics agreement that expands access to waste management for billions of people worldwide. And yes, there's some fun along the way…from K-pop playlists to shark diving and guilty-pleasure reality TV.

While at CIBC's Annual Institutional Investor Conference in Whistler, we had the exciting opportunity to host Grant Isaac of Cameco for this Special Edition COBT. Grant serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Cameco and has held several roles over his 16-plus years with the company, including EVP & CFO and SVP of Corporate Services. In his current role, he is responsible for all Cameco operations, exploration, and corporate development, as well as the company's commercial and financial strategy. Grant earned a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and previously served as a business professor at the University of Saskatchewan. We were delighted to sit down with Grant to explore the latest developments in nuclear energy. In our discussion, Grant outlines Cameco's integrated nuclear platform and strategy, with vertical integration as a way to help “build their own demand,” as each reactor build creates 80-100 years of downstream recurring fuel and services demand. We explore how nuclear has shifted from “maybe/what if” to “must do it now,” what drives ordering momentum, and the industry's push to turn nuclear from a project into a product through standardization, sequencing, and simplification. Grant discusses how investors are increasingly underwriting Cameco as a “nuclear super-major” with scarce, strategic assets, and how the Westinghouse acquisition and partnership with Brookfield broadened the shareholder base and improved visibility into future demand. We touch on supply-chain pinch points across mining, conversion, enrichment, and fabrication, the post-Russia fuel-cycle reset, and why uranium is uniquely constrained by geology and can't be “fixed” with industrial policy. Grant explains the Global Laser Enrichment (GLE) project, the role of public-private partnerships in capital-intensive nuclear projects, and Ontario as a positive case study for government involvement. Grant also shares why traditional NPV frameworks tend to undervalue nuclear assets, noting that governments and sponsors instead focus on payback math over 80–100-year asset lives, the significant economic multipliers from large-scale nuclear builds, and the “cluster effects” that attract long-term industry, jobs, and investment, making the case for nuclear as a generational, nation-building infrastructure investment. We also cover evolving investor frameworks and valuation metrics, expectations for consolidation in the nuclear sector, his outlook for 2026, the future of uranium supply, and more. It was an insightful conversation. In other nuclear news, the World Nuclear Association published a World Nuclear Outlook Report on Tuesday, January 20 (linked here), which provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of global nuclear energy development, assessing national targets for nuclear capacity against the global goal to triple nuclear capacity by 2050. We hope you enjoy the discussion with Grant as much as we did. Our best to you all!

Malaria is still the third biggest killer on the planet and despite decades of serious investment it's a disease that is still very much with us. But that investment is starting to pay off - 2025 has been a big year for new ways of tackling the disease. This week we're reflecting on the progress made in 2025 – but also asking what impact unprecedented cuts to global health funding might have on whether children living in hot and humid regions of the world contract malaria. Our expert guide is James Tibenderana, an epidemiologist from Uganda. He is Chief Executive at the Malaria Consortium, an organisation that advises governments on best practice for tackling malaria as well as delivering their own programmes. We also hear from Nigeria, the country with the highest rates of malaria in the world. Dr Onyinye Echedike-Elekwa at The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital on the south coast of the country tells us how it's been in the clinic this year. The drug known as GamLun marks a huge breakthrough in the treatment of malaria. Abdoulaye Djimdé is Professor of Parasitology and Mycology at the Malaria Research and Training Centre University of Bamako, Mali. He led clinical trials of the medication and explains how it works. In September, the World Health Organisation announced conditional approval for indoor use of spatial emanators, a device which continually releases a mosquito toxin into the air for up to a year. Epidemiologist Ellie Sherrard-Smith from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK explains the potential benefits and concerns for this tool.Plus, we reflect on the progress made in the malaria vaccine roll out this year and how a new formulation of a pre-existing drug is offering hope to the very youngest patientsAnd could we ever eliminate malaria completely? Next week, we consider the big ideas hoping to do just that.Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Hannah Robins

While analyzing the numbers Drake Maye is putting up, one person who might be getting overlooked during this run is Josh McDaniels. Just how much is the offensive coordinator a factor into a great stretch of play in Maye's second season? Then, a "dirt bike influencer" is in a lot of trouble for using a deepfake video in the New England Nightly News. And, breaking news comes across the desk that Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will be opting out of his deal and will hit free agency.
A Big Year is maybe the ultimate expression of birding obsession, with all the drama inherent to the effort. Brothers Quentin and Owen Reiser's attempt at a Big Year maybe most of all. It's the subject of their documentary, Listers, an attempt to throw themselves into the birding world through perhaps the most extreme expression of the hobby. It's profane, it's funny, it's honest, and it covers all aspects of the birding world, warts and all. Owen joins us to talk about the film and his experience undertaking what he calls a "fully dirtbag Big Year". Plus there's a companion book! What is QAnon today, nearly eight years after the first Q drop? In Marc-André-Argentio's new book QAnon: From Conspiracy Theory to New Religious Movement he argues that QAnon is best understood as a “hyper-real religion.” Even years after the Q drops stopped, QAnon exists as a lived religious practice, where true believers are commissioned to redpill the normies and posting is a rite. The book demonstrates that the movement has gone through three stages of existence: proto-QAnon, canonical-QAnon, and apocryphal-QAnon. Travis and Jake chat with Marc-André about his book and how it builds on other books that cover the movement.
