Three Things I Learned In SaaS, Sports, Tech & Live Events Podcast
Three Things I Learned In SaaS, Sports, Tech, & Live Events A wall-to-wall week in New Orleans and what I learned: 1) Sometimes an event outgrows it's home. The Super Bowl has outgrown traditional hosts in Miami, Tampa Bay, and New Orleans The thesis going into the event was that hotel rooms are going to be an issue. They were. New Orleans is amazing. I hadn't spent much time In the city before last weekend. I'd heard it is "not for me," but I had a different experience. I really enjoyed it and had a fantastic Super Bowl experience. I'm not sure that's the same experience most fans had. Due to a lack of rooms, many had to drive into the city for the festivities - and that was near impossible come the weekend. The one venture we made out of town was to take an airboat tour of the bayou. Upon arriving back, our Uber would have taken an hour-plus to go the final mile. And that was on Saturday. Sunday was worse. It's not just a New Orleans thing. The game is too big now. As much as I enjoy many of the great host cities, I think we're going to see a lot more of the more traditional conference cities hosting the game. Miami and Tampa will still host, but I'll be surprised if New Orleans does again in the next ten years. Especially after how well LA, Phoenix, and Las Vegas did hosting the games. 2. Miami and Las Vegas broke our expectations for the Super Bowl market I was very wrong, publicly, in my estimation of what the Super Bowl tickets would cost. Part of that equation was the hotel rooms. The bigger part? New Orleans was actually a fairly expensive game, we just remember the outliers more. In "Thinking Fast and Slow," Daniel Kanhemann lays out, in great detail, the case that we remember and over-index to extremes in most situations. I believe that's what happened this year as the internet oversold the weakness of the market. Ratings were as high as ever (ignore discussions of records. Everything is a record now since they changed the way they count ratings) and the market was fairly strong when compared to the first match-up between the Eagles and Chiefs in Phoenix in 2023. It just didn't match Miami or Vegas - and that's a great thing. Tickets need to be affordable to fans. A $5k get-in is not. Since 2000, only a few Super Bowl's stand out with get-ins over $2500: Phoenix in 2015 (and for no-longer-existent market reasons), Miami in 2020, and Las Vegas 2024. Most other Super Bowls are well-under $3k with some under $1k. I, like many, was starting to think maybe the maker is just more expensive now. Maybe not. Good thing that's not my job 3. Thank You I started the Three Things as a journal for my kids. The support I get from friends and even strangers who walk up to me and say they enjoy reading my LinkedIn posts makes me so happy. People actually read it. Crazy.

Fly Eagles Fly!The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Kansas City Chiefs to win this year's Super Bowl. As a Pennsylvania native, I've seen the passion from Philly fans since I was a child. Watching them dominate this past Sunday, I had Randall Cunningham memories flooding my mind. For former Eagle and Oregon Ducks' Hall of Famer Kenjon Barner, he too was going down memory lane this weekend. A member of the Super Bowl LII Champions in 2018, Kenjon holds a special place for Eagle fans and the City of Brotherly Love in his heart. He shared the impact of that team on the latest episode of the Y-Option podcast, sponsored by our founding partner 76.Barner, a 3-time Super Bowl champ, is one of two players in NFL history to have Super Bowl rings from 3 different franchises (along with Matt Millen) and each one was unique. From Philly when he was a return specialist to New England the following season when he was not even on the roster during the Super Bowl to being in Tampa Bay during the COVID season with Tom Brady, the path that Barner was on to garner 3 rings is as unique as any in the NFL.Like every player, Kenjon also navigated the transition from playing to life off the gridiron. Now, he hosts the podcast Ducks of a Feather, alongside former Oregon All-American running back Jonathan Stewart, where they share insights and analysis on the reigning B1G champions.Overall, our conversation is a positive listen for any player navigating recruiting while also providing a lens on life through the eyes of a player who has been at epic highs while navigating life post playing career and the natural lows that come with that.Hope you enjoy today's conversation with my colleague, friend and former Oregon Duck, Kenjon Barner.Much love and Stay Steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Episode 74: Ian Herbers. University of Alberta Head Coach Ian Herbers found some time in his busy schedule to jump on the prohockeypod. Ian grew up playing hockey in Alberta before embarking on a 4 year WHL journey. He was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers but due to an injury, decided to go the USports route. During his years as a player at U of Alberta, Ian was fortunate to win a championship. He talked about that season and the group of guys, as well as mentioning they just had their 25 anniversary a couple years ago. Ian constantly brought up that he didn't think too much about how is career was going or going up levels. He simply just showed up everyday, put in his work and enjoyed being in the locker room with his teammates. After university, Ian started his pro journey through the AHL and IHL, while playing NHL games with Edmonton, Tampa Bay and New York. Throughout his playing career, he was able to win a USports championship, a Turner Cup in the IHL and a Calder Cup in the AHL. Ian had a couple years as a Player Coach so it was no surprise that when he retired, he would transition to behind the bench. He has coached in many leagues (AHL, OHL, ECHL, NHL and CIS/USports). As mentioned, Ian was able to make it to the NHL as an Assistant Coach with the Edmonton Oilers for a few seasons. I asked him how he handled/coached star players in Edmonton like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He brought up how easy it was to work with them, their incredible work ethic and always trying to improve. Ian is now back at UofA as the Head Coach and has added some more titles to his coaching resume. Great talking to Ian and I was very happy I got the chance to pick his brain. Hope you enjoy!

Roger Germann, President and CEO of The Florida Aquarium, sits down with Owen LaFave to discuss why turning Tampa Bay into a cultural gem of Florida is a worthwhile investment. Having reached the milestone of serving over 1 million visitors per year for the past two years, The Florida Aquarium – rated among the top 10 aquariums in the nation – is a prime example of how an attraction can engage the local community and expand beyond tourism dependence, resulting in an economic impact of over $300 million annually. When Roger first came to Tampa Bay and claimed he wanted to double the aquarium's $21 million budget, some may have had doubts – but he's done it! Learn how reinvesting in the facility, focusing on education and conservation, listening to members, reconnecting with locals, and prioritizing regional partnerships/vendors has led not only to market success and a $45 million expansion but to improved quality of life for the residents of Tampa Bay. As Roger likes to say, it's your Florida aquarium. The Bank of Tampa | Member FDIC

Phil Esposito, an NHL Hall of Famer instrumental in expanding the sport of hockey in Florida, gives Owen LaFave the inside scoop on what it takes to build a long-lasting career in a specific industry–even an industry as competitive as professional sports. Ever candid, Esposito describes how he pivoted from being a record-breaking NHL player in the 1970s and 80s to building a hockey franchise in Tampa Bay with his brother, goalkeeper Tony Esposito, in the early 90s. At the time, many doubted professional hockey could succeed in Florida, but as the first president and general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Phil Esposito proved the naysayers wrong. From overcoming a low point of his career when he left as GM of the New York Rangers, to later returning to the Lightning as Tampa Bay's radio color commentator, Esposito shares an array of entertaining stories for the avid hockey fan and enterprising business leader alike. It's another week of 2 Bears, 1 Cave with Tom Segura being joined by guest bear, comedian, actor, and influencer Druski! Tom opens the show doing his best impression of Magic Johnson, much to Druski's amusement, before the two chat about Coulda Been Records, Druski's comedic American Idol-esque series that went from a joke to an actual global phenom. The duo also talk about touring around the world, career goals, Druski's ambitions, karate, sketch shows, fan engagement, and they bond over their mutual interest in Fancy Chef. Tom also introduces Druski to Robert Paul Champagne, they talk Alabama football, and Druski comes clean about what went down when he was invited to a Diddy party! Bert coulda been in this episode, but he was busy. Plus Druski abrupt leaves at the end of the episode...super random.
