We're diving back into Dangerous Animals for a special 30 Screams or Less: Podcaster's Cut — our extended, less-edited version of the episode featuring more tangents, more screwups, and plenty of conversations that probably should have stayed on the cutting-room floor.Directed by Sean Byrne and written by Nick Lepard, Dangerous Animals stars Hassie Harrison as Zephyr, a free-spirited surfer who is abducted by shark-obsessed serial killer Bruce Tucker, played by Jai Courtney. Trapped aboard his boat and facing a particularly brutal fate in the waters below, Zephyr has to fight like hell to survive. Josh Heuston stars as Moses Markley, who finds himself pulled into the nightmare while searching for her.In this episode, we break down Jai Courtney's unhinged performance as Tucker, Hassie Harrison's case for being one of horror's best recent final girls, the movie's brutal shark attacks, practical gore, serial-killer trophies, and the seemingly endless number of times Zephyr comes within inches of escaping. We also discuss whether the movie's final moments kept Dangerous Animals from being a five-star horror movie — plus, because this is the Podcaster's Cut, things inevitably derail into conversations about biting off thumbs, swimming with sharks, fighting bears, Leonardo DiCaprio, fake AI movie trailers, laundry, and much more. Was Dangerous Animals one of the best shark horror movies in years? And just how far would you go to survive a shark-obsessed serial killer?WARNING: This episode contains full spoilers for Dangerous Animals.Sponsored By:

A silent ice cream vendor arrives in a suburban town and hands out treats that turn the local children into homicidal maniacs. It is the first theatrical release from The Horror Section, Roth's new studio co-founded with Bloody Good Horror's Jon Schnaars. Made for roughly 5.5 million dollars, with about 10 percent of the company sold to around 2,500 fans through the investment platform Republic. Fred from the SubArctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel returns with two unsettling encounter reports from the Alaskan wilderness. The first story follows Jeanette and Ross as they hike a well-traveled trail leading from the highway toward the North Kenai River and Skilak Lake area. What begins with strange whispering in the woods quickly escalates into loud, unintelligible gibberish coming from somewhere nearby. Then, without warning, an explosive scream erupts from behind them with enough force to make both hikers buckle.Ross immediately reaches for bear spray, but there is nothing visible to confront. As the couple begins retreating, the activity continues. A large log appears to shift as though something has pushed it, more screams echo through the area, and Ross catches a brief glimpse of a large, dark figure near the trail with a bulky build and distinctly human-like shoulders. The encounter becomes even more disturbing when they meet another group on the trail who also heard the scream and strange vocalizations and ultimately help escort Jeanette and Ross out of the area.Fred then shares an anonymous account involving two active-duty military hunters near Alaska's Gulkana River.During their trip, the men notice what appears to be a strange fire made from spruce boughs and decide to investigate. As they approach, they encounter extremely tall figures in the darkness and begin hearing unusual deep chirping sounds. At least one of the figures is described as roughly ten feet tall, covered in black, and unlike anything the hunters expected to find in the wilderness. The situation becomes tense enough that warning shots are fired. Soon afterward, the men discover a snowmachine overturned and later pursue a remarkably fast-moving figure traveling across deep snow with apparent ease. What initially seems connected to the disappearance of their friends takes another unexpected turn when the missing men are eventually located drinking in town, leaving the hunters with even more questions about exactly what they encountered along the Gulkana River. Two remote areas. Multiple witnesses. Strange vocalizations, towering figures, and behavior that does not easily fit any familiar animal. Chelsea shows up to the Fourth of July with a "very loose theme" — fireworks and patriotism in horror — and then, somehow, makes it cohere. Blow Out, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Final Destination 3 have nothing to do with each other until you notice they're all doing the same trick: pointing your eyes up at the pretty lights while something ugly happens at ground level. So we get into it. Is Blow Out even a horror movie, or just De Palma at his most gorgeous and most pervy, making a movie about making a movie? We defend I Know What You Did Last Summer despite ethical math that reads like it was written by a '90s AI — and land on why we love it anyway. And we finally give Final Destination 3 its due as a Rube Goldberg machine of presorted cruelty that dares you to enjoy it.Threaded through all three: the illusion of safety in a crowd, the discovery that surviving the accident is the actual nightmare, and a TikTok ride operator who should absolutely not be employed. Also, Kynan watched his first summer slasher and lived to tell about it.Links & NotesOur prior Final Destination episode: Death Edging with the Films of Final DestinationOur papa podcast's breakdown of Talk to MeBlow Out - Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdI Know What You Did Last Summer - Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdFinal Destination 3 - Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdView Our List on Letterboxd (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (01:32) - Blow Out (23:20) - I Know What You Did Last Summer (42:24) - Final Destination Part 3 (59:28) - Coming Attractions Support The Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next ReelSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Chelsea | Kyle | Kynan | Pete | Tommy Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Audible

Danny Sheehan is one of the most consequential public interest attorneys of the last century. His cases include the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, the Karen Silkwood case, the Iran-Contra investigation, and decades of work at the intersection of government secrecy and the public's right to know. He is co-founder of the Romero Institute and the New Paradigm Institute, and a leading voice in the push for congressional UAP disclosure. Today, he stands at the center of what may be the most consequential question humanity has ever faced: the implications of a potential extraterrestrial or extradimensional non-human presence here on Earth. Having spent over 50 years litigating against government secrecy and winning, in this discussion, Danny connects the JFK assassination, the Vatican's role in the 1933 Italy UFO crash, the founding of the CIA, and the architecture of Brown Brothers Harriman to the UFO cover-up we're living through today, and lays out the concrete constitutional path to disclosure. Big thanks to Jamie Billings for helping make this interview happen, and to Danny and his wife for their time and generosity. The New Paradigm Institute, founded by acclaimed civil rights and Constitutional attorney Danny Sheehan, is dedicated to advocating for the public release of information held by the government surrounding the issue of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), or what was commonly known as Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).
