Travis Talbert has made the music biz his living, or maybe it's the music that made him do it. He's a touring and session pedal steel player and guitarist for other touring artists like Arlo McKinley but has also busied himself with his band Frontier Folk Nebraska and now more recently with his solo music as Mavis Guitar. He's been releasing music under that moniker for some time now but his most recent offering, Tony Delks' 53 Point Game (self-released) is an expansive and eclectic mix but still stands as cohesive and focused. It's music that uses traditional instruments phrasings but has a kind of meditative ambience to it that transcends the trappings of folk or rock. He's doing all this while teaching guitar/piano/pedal steel, touring at length, working at his fave record store Shake It Records and raising a beautiful family.

Travis Talbert is the lead guitar player for the band Frontier Folk Nebraska. He also has a solo project called Mavis Guitar where he plays pedal steel and guitar. He's a gifted and thoughtful player and a softspoken, gentle guy. He's also a man who has survived the death of his son. Tobin Talbert lived 7 months and never left the hospital. Travis and his beautiful wife Heather somehow managed to weather this tragedy and come out the other side stronger, braver, and still in love. This was one of the hardest episodes ever for me to edit, because I kept having to stop and just sit in my sadness for a minute. On one hand, it seems far too sad to be the 2020 Christmas Episode of Crash and Ride, on the other... well, 2020 is what it is, and Travis helped me to remember to be grateful for everything I have. Merry Christmas. Northern Kentucky rockers Frontier Folk Nebraska's name is “basically just words” that singer/guitarist Mike Hensley said popped out to them as they got their start a decade ago. As they kick off their Warpig EP SXSW Tour on Thursday, March 9th in Nashville, the rock 'n' roll foursome leaves no false pretenses about the reputation they’ve earned as a set list-shunning live band. “(Not having a set list) scared him to death when he first started,” Hensley said, pointing to bassist Matt McCormick, who came on in 2014 with drummer Mark Becknell. “This is who we are. We can’t get up and try and morph into something else. It’s either going to work or it’s not for everybody else. We’re there. We’re just going to be ourselves.” Taking the stage at the largest music festival of its kind would give anybody stage fright, but Frontier Folk Nebraska is staying super chill about its swing through the Deep South before hitting South by Southwest on March 18 in Austin, Texas. The 11-stop tour celebrates the release of their four-song EP Warpig, available March 24 via digital download and on cassette tape. Yes, you read correctly. Cassette. Too bad my dearly departed 2000 Pontiac Grand Am now rusting at a Tri-State scrap yard is my closest existing link to a cassette player. Setlist: - Girls Like Wine - Cut You Loose - interview - - Sunken Ship - Ghost on a Tap
