This week, we promote awareness of “Shoe The World Day – March 15” by visiting a long-forgotten genre that emerged in the late 80s – early 90s. A genre that exploited obscured vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume: SHOEGAZE. In part 1, we focused mostly on bands from the UK, but in part 2, we are exploring bands from other parts of the world. These bands use the artistry of guitar innovation to paint some wonderfully layered sonic canvases! If you have a preconceived notion that you don't like this stuff, we ask that you give this episode a shot, as you might be surprised how much it rocks… What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. If you were into this music when it came out back in the early 90s, chances are that you haven't revisited it in a while. Come along on this ride with us and spend the next 90 minutes staring at your feet! We hope we turn you on to something new! Songs this week include: Big Jesus – “Felt In Reverse” from Oneiric (2016) Band Of Susans – “Pearls Of Wisdom” from Veil (1993) Blackwater Holylight – “Bodies” from Not Here Not Gone (2026) Kent – “Lifesavers” from Isola (1998) Softcult – “16/25” from When A Flower Doesn't Grow (2026) Swirlies – “San Cristobal De Las Casas” from They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons (1996) HUM – “Starts” from You'd Prefer An Astronaut (1995)   Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!:InObscuria Store Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/ Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/

Now reintroduced as American Vanity, they're sharpening their songwriting, amplifying their hooks, and confronting the tension between authenticity and performance in the attention economy. We talk creative reinvention, the pressure of being seen, lessons from the road, and what it was like working with Grammy-nominated producer Matt Squire on their upcoming full-length album. On episode 351 we're joined by my friend Jim Lorino, the artist formerly known as Scoopski, from Philadelphia. I've known Jim since the early days of the podcast, and it's great to have him back. This time, he's here with his new band, DelCobras, a three-headed Power Pop monster that's slithering onto the Philly rock scene in 2025, the Year of the Snake apparently. DelCobras features Jim “Scoops” Lorino, Marc Schuster, and Nick Cervini — all three of whom sat down for this conversation. The band grew out of the live lineup of Scoops, and after an incredible year of shows, the trio decided to shed their old skin, and strike with a tighter, more aggressive sound. On the episode I featured their fresh take on the holiday classic “Last Christmas,” plus the non-seasonal rocker “Someday Soon” — both available wherever you stream music. In the episode, we dive into how DelCobras came together, talk all things Philly, and hear about their recent gig at a Christmas parade. It was a fun chat with plenty of local music philly brotherly love. Big thanks to Jim, Marc, and Nick for coming on, and huge thanks to all of you for listening and supporting independent artists. Hip-hop culture was a dominant force during the '80s and '90s, and inspired language, fashion, film, and music. Yes, that includes plenty of alternative music. But that's not what we're talking about today. Instead, we explore the inverse - how influential was alternative music in the world of hip hop?  While perhaps not quite as pervasive, it did exist - whether it be through the use of sampling recognizable songs, a cross-pollination of styles and artists coming together, or perhaps just an overall attitude or spirit. Our Third Lad this week, Lemoyne Alexander, is a man who has bridged both the hip-hop and alternative worlds and then some.  He played in family bands throughout the ‘70s & ‘80s including the Fascination, who had some dance club hits like 1986's “Why Are You Always Complaining?” before settling in as a hip hop producer both solo and with the production team 3 Da Hard Way, working on records by the likes of Aalyiah, DMX, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, and for labels like Jive and Motown.  Lemoyne left the rap game to return to his earliest passions - the guitar and rock n' roll, releasing Solitude in 2019 and Perfect World in 2023.  2024's indie rock single “Insecurity” is an earworm that once you hear that infectious chorus, it's going to take up residence in your head for all your days.  With a new single "Claustrophobia" (which you will hear during this episode!) and LP Alone on the horizon, Lemoyne is poised to continue making his mark on alt rock. Oh, and on top of that, we've got a brand new O3L game for y'all: Off Da Chartz (aka Rap Draft), in which our contestants draft five albums that they believe will appear on Boombox's list of the Top 50 Alternative Rap Albums of all time. Five songs. Five distinct moods. One immersive listen that moves from hazy warmth to triumphant return to a heart-tugging plea that won't leave you alone. We spin through new and notable band singles from the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan, comparing notes on production, emotional arcs, and those tiny moments—drops, claps, whispers—that flip a good track into a great one.We start with Over October's 'Dahan', where soft rock and a psychedelic sheen create a slow-burn glow. The vocal sits rich and husky while the guitar shimmers, and a late-song drop brings a goosebump whisper that seals the mood. From there, macico's 'puppet' layers lounge, J-pop, and R&B, all breathy and conspiratorial, hinting at power, distance, and the loneliness between the lines. CNBLUE's 'Curtain call' turns the energy up without losing finesse: bright piano, brass accents, and a propulsive groove that feels like walking back onstage to cheers—grateful, charged, alive. Sakurashimeji's 'who!' brings youthful drive with a smart stereo intro, handclap lift, and a mid-song funk wink that keeps the ride playful and tight. We close on SURL's 'Please stay', where the guitar weeps and the vocal folds into the arrangement like another instrument. It's melancholic, intoxicating, and beautifully produced, the kind of track that asks for one more midnight replay.Throughout, we talk arrangement choices, vocal textures, sonic influences—psychedelic touches, jazz inflections, R&B undercurrents—and how personal context shapes what we hear. Author Greg Prato joins us this week to discuss his new book Alternative for the Masses. The book argues that Nirvana didn't just happen out of nowhere. The seeds had been planted with bands like the Pixies and Jane's Addiction that prepared a way for Nirvana (and the whole grunge movement) to flourish. The book is an oral history featuring dozens of key voices from the scene (many of which are former guests) who share their recollections of that period including indie record labels, the drugs, Lollapalooza and key songs and albums, which Greg and I debate as well. It's a lively discussion with a great writer about an important chapter in music history. We're also giving away a book. Warmest of Welcomes everybody! As promised during the live raffle draw, your bonus episode of the Mooglecast is here where myself (Max) and my old school friend Maurice take a trip down memory lane talking about an I.P that carries a lot of nostalgia for us and really solidified our friendship in the best way possible. In this episode, Maurice introduces himself to the Trophytalk listeners and talks about his approach to gaming and then some of the memories we have playing Guitar Hero, what makes a good guitar hero game and for the main bulk of the episode we design a setlist for a Guitar Hero revival game from scratch. With over 60 songs mentioned we used our extensive music knowledge in Rock and Metal to create a setlist that features Hits, B-sides, and Deep cuts from a variety of artists that stretch across the rock and metal sub genres whether you're into Classic Rock, Death Metal, Alt Metal, Alt Rock, Prog, we try to cater to everyone. With each track mentioned we talk about some of our memories / thoughts of the artists bringing this episode to over 2.5hrs in length, one of Trophytalk networks longest episodes, so turn it up to 11 and get ready to talk riffs! Myself and Maurice will be back for a Part 2 so please look forward to that, but for now we took the time to produce a Spotify Playlist of the songs mentioned in order so you can listen to this fun little game idea, please enjoy and be excellent to eachother! https://spotify.link/t5NIf27qEXb

Hey Slackers, we're taking a fun detour this episode!Longtime listeners know I was a die-hard hair band and metal fan back in the '80s, which, let's be honest, made me a bit of a genre snob. Looking back, I realize I missed out on a ton of incredible music from that decade.Inspired by my son's request for a fresh playlist, I decided to step outside my usual rock, metal, punk, and emo comfort zone. Instead, I dove into the vibrant world of synth-pop, new wave, EDM, and alt-rock, curating a collection of tracks spanning 1980 to 1989. These are songs that lit up the charts or defined the underground scene—definitely not my typical picks! From the moody brilliance of Joy Division to the raw energy of the Pixies, I've crafted what I'm calling an "Offbeat '80s" playlist. But I need your help to make it even better! Early Gen Xers, 120 Minutes devotees, and alternative music lovers—hit me up with your must-have tracks to round out this out. What gems am I missing? Let's build this playlist together!

This week on Caught on the Mike, I sit down with Alex Dugan, the magnetic frontman of Culture Wars, to talk about the band's latest single “Lies”—a raw, emotional 90s-tinged alt-rock ballad that's already making waves. We get into the heart of the song's origin—written in the aftermath of heartbreak and betrayal, and shaped by the realization that everything musically was about to change. Inspired by a life-altering New Order concert and years in the making, “Lies” has grown from synth beginnings to a powerful full-band anthem that now closes every Culture Wars show. Alex opens up about the vulnerability behind the lyrics, the band's sonic evolution, and how this track paved the way for everything Culture Wars would become. We also talk about their massive year—touring with Wallows, Keane, and LANY, hitting the top 20 on alt radio, and gearing up for their headline shows in LA and NYC. This is more than just a conversation about a song—it's a conversation about trusting your gut, healing through art, and finding the courage to put it all out there.
