Over the last couple of years Worm Shot has been consistently gathering a fan base in Northern Nevada. They are a part of a growing scene largely based out of Reno that includes a variety of styles, and influences. I've gotten to see them live a couple of times now and I've just been really impressed with their sense of self. They are developing a sound that is really all their own, and the response from the Reno scene is palpable. I was happy to have them come in to our radio station KNVC 95.1 FM in Carson City. Shout out to Waylon Parr who set up, and took care of the interview. It was fun to have everyone in the studio to talk music, and have them perform a few songs. I hope you dig it!

In this episode, we're joined by none other than Collin Walsh, the voice behind Grayscale. Collin gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the band's latest chapter—kicking off with their new single “Not Afraid to Die”, a bold, synth-infused track that marks a major shift in their sound and direction. We talk about what it's like going independent, the emotional layers behind recent tracks like “Mum II” and “Summer Clothes”, and even dive into how the band (and industry) is evolving, and thow hey're doing it on their own terms. Plus, Collin teases what fans can expect from Grayscale's upcoming tour with Our Last Night—from new setlists to life on the road, it's clear they're more fired up than ever. If you're a longtime fan or just getting into the band, this is the perfect time to catch up with Grayscale and hear where they're headed next.

In this episode, we ponder what it means for a Tori Amos song to be “underrated.” Is “underrated” in this context even something definable? Or is it ultimately subjective and personal to the individual listener? Is a song underrated because Tori rarely or never performs it? Or is it a song that's been played so many times that we've taken it for granted and can no longer hear the genius and the grit that went into its creation? Or perhaps it lives on a latter-day Tori record that's less celebrated, less heard by the general public? In the spirit of our wildly successful – and a touch controversial – Best of Tori Amos episode, we bring to you The 20 Most Underrated Tori Songs. We repeated our very scientific method of each crafting individual lists of what we believe to be Tori's most underrated tracks – from proper albums only; no bsides, no soundtracks, no covers, no seasonal music - tallying each song's respective points and then ranking the ranking them in ascending order. The result is a playlist that spans many - but not all - of Tori's records, chock full of gags, goops, gogs, and go-figures. Given how underrated we likely all agree Tori is in the broader history of contemporary music, this very episode may be the definition of a fool's errand. Regardless, in the spirit of the woman we call Tori once calling herself an “ant fucker,” we are Introverted but willing to discuss Tori Amos' most underrated songs.Playlists:20 Most Underrated Songs JVKKMM

In this episode, I sit down with Jen Vaughan (Vocals), Darren O'Keeffe (Rhythm Guitar) and Scott McGowan (Lead Guitar) of the band with Mike Jordan (Bass) & Barry English (Drums) making up the rest of Shadows Calling, one of Ireland's most exciting rising bands blending alt-rock, grunge, and metal into a sound entirely their own. We dive into how the band came together—born during the 2020 lockdown as the brainchild of Mitchelstown native Darren O'Keeffe. He began writing original material for the first time and teamed up with his sister Jen Vaughan, a seasoned frontwoman with 20+ years in the music industry. Darren later discovered Cork guitarist Scott McGowan through an online musicians' platform, igniting the dual-guitar foundation that drives the band's hard-hitting sound. Their debut EPs, Spirit Shifter and These Scars, showcase their raw energy, collaborative songwriting, and genre-blending edge. All lyrics are co-written by Darren and Scott, with music crafted collectively by the entire band. We also talk about the creative process behind both EPs—produced and mixed by John Murphy (For Ruin) and mastered by Marco Tervonen of The Crown (Sweden)—plus stunning artwork by Colin Bolger (Spirit Shifter) and Giulia Benvenuti (These Scars). From studio sessions and live tour reactions to Jen's perspective as a female vocalist in metal and what 2025 has in store, this episode is packed with insight, passion, and authenticity.

Born in upstate New York, Brian moved to Austin in 2012. His musical style draws heavily from Classic Rock, '90s Alternative, and Americana. His songs are marked by big guitars and impactful rhythms, complete with thoughtful, introspective, and unique lyrics. In the summer of 2024, Brian Wolff & The Howlers performed at Spiedie Fest in Binghamton, NY, sharing the festival stage with Chris Young and Shaboozey. In the '80s, Peter Buck's clean, chime-y arpeggios defined the sound of alt-rock to come. From the band's start, his post-Roger McGuinn 12-string style served as the foundation for the band's simple, plain-spoken approach, offering a fresh take on what an independent band could be and inspiring generations of artists to come. Buck not only found his sound quickly, he evolved throughout the band's career. By the '90s, R.E.M.'s sound had evolved to incorporate organic, acoustic textures, and eventually leaning into a glam- and grunge-inspired, distorted-guitar-focused sound on 1994's Monster.Brought to you by Voodoo Lab: https://voodoolab.com/the-power-of-perfect-tone/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. The raw energy and emotion they deliver make us yearn to experience their music live. The journey continues with an exploration of Number_i's revolutionary transformation in their latest track, "GOD_i." This eclectic mix blends dubstep with Gothic Gregorian chant, challenging our perceptions and sparking deep introspection on self-empowerment. We also venture into the world of sci-fi-inspired music with BE:FIRST's "Spacecraft", pondering the relationship between technology and identity with a song that feels like being lost in space. Eerie electronic sounds and thought-provoking lyrics paint a picture of modern existential drift. This episode isn't just about the music itself; it's about the feelings they evoke and the stories they tell, leaving us wrapped in a tapestry of sound and sentiment. Whether you're a fan of chaotic beats or smooth, sinister melodies, this episode invites you to rethink the role music plays in our understanding of the world and ourselves.ALL(H)OURS info: Instagram  X  YouTube  Graffiti (Spotify)ONE CLICK STRAIGHT info: Instagram  X  YouTube  Telepono (Spotify)Number_i info: Instagram  X  YouTube  GOD_i (Spotify)BE:FIRST info: Instagram  X  YouTube  Spacecraft (Spotify)Support the showPlease help Music Elixir by rating, reviewing, and sharing the episode. I could never pick a favorite interview, but this one was up there! The conversation this month is with a heroine of mine, Judy Hyman. Judy co-founded the Horseflies in Ithaca, NY in the late 1970s and has played and taught Old-Time and Alt-Rock fiddle ever since. She now composes music for film and media.Despite having a classical violin background growing up, Judy has never learned a fiddle tune from paper! We talk about why that is, her musical influences, and how she and her bandmates built the unique Horseflies sound. We dig into playing and creating music that creates and channels emotion, including what Judy calls "swirl", and the use of delay.Of course we discuss her husband Jeff Claus and the banjo uke, and Judy shares the modifications that she uses to keep fiddling after playing hard for many years- for her bow and her fiddle. Then we talk about composing!https://www.judyhyman.com/Reach me at meganbeller@fiddlestudio.comBandcamp YouTube Fiddle Studio books My website for learning to fiddle is Fiddle Studio which has courses and a mailing list and my Top 10 Fiddle Tunes!

The way I see it, there are three types of bands that stretch across a spectrum…first, there's the extreme sort, a group that will do almost anything to attract attention…you're probably thinking of some names right now. Next to them are the traditional sort, and they comprise the vast majority of bands out there…these are groups that go out there, do their thing earnestly and honestly, and hope that this will be enough for music lovers…they occupy a huge part of this spectrum. And then we have the third type: the quirky, eccentric, and weird…these groups come in all sorts of flavours, from mildly bent to the gloriously stupid and the confoundingly weird…these bands go a long way into making music fun and unpredictable. Not all land with audiences—they're too strange, not enough people get the joke, or maybe they're just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But there can be a balance between being quirky and fun and having songs that have widespread appeal…they have just enough of the nerd factor to set themselves apart while not being so nerdy that they'll turn too many people off. This is really hard to do…it takes songwriting skills, careful management of your image, and plenty of creativity and imagination, especially if you want to main things over more than just a couple of albums and touring cycles. Among the very, very, very best of this class of band is Weezer…they've perfected a formula that includes musical talent, wit, self-deprecation, left-of-centre thinking, a desire to have fun, a willingness to experiment, some clever marketing, and above all, to let their fans in on everything…it's an approach that has worked very, very well for decades. Set in 1996, the novel follows alt-rocker Emma Cantor as she navigates the highs and lows of a rising music career while grappling with the legacy of her mother, Judie, a 1960s folk legend. Emma's journey is marked by revelations about her family's past, her complicated relationship with Judie, and the sacrifices women artists often make for success. Sarah shares the musical inspiration behind her book, revealing how the rich world of folk and rock music shaped the story and its characters. She also delves into her fascination with family dynamics in artistic households and the interplay between creative ambition and personal struggles. Sarah Seltzer is a writer in New York City, where she lives with her family, surrounded by books, records, and CDs. She is an editor at ‘Lilith Magazine' and has been a journalist for many publications, reporting on activism and culture, and writing essays, cultural criticism, and the occasional opinion piece. ‘The Singer Sisters', born out of her fascination with families who put their struggles into art, was published by Flatiron Books in summer 2024.   MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Rock is Lit theme music [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” “Possession” by Sarah McLachlan “Untouchable Face” by Ani DiFranco “All I Want” by Joni Mitchell [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” Rock is Lit theme music   LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 Sarah Seltzer's website: https://sarahseltzer.wordpress.com/ Sarah Seltzer on Instagram and Twitter: @sarahmseltzer Sarah Seltzer on Facebook: @SarahSeltzer Sarah Seltzer on Bluesky: @sarahmseltzer.bsky.social Christy Alexander Hallberg's website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislit Christy Alexander Hallberg on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Rock is Lit on Instagram: @rockislitpodcast Rock is Lit on Bluesky: @rockislitpodcast.bsky.social Learn more about your ad choices. If Rivers Cuomo of Weezer were to walk past you on the street, you probably wouldn't notice him…if you did, you might think that this stranger kinda looked like Louis Tully, the nebbish accountant played by Rick Moranis in a couple of “Ghostbusters” movie. Chances are he'd be wearing skinny jeans, a t-shirt, a hoody, maybe a baseball cap, indistinguishable from a hundred other short, slight, guys with glasses that you encountered that day…and that's just the way he likes it. But Rivers Cuomo is an unlikely sort of rock star and is extremely committed to being a rock star—or at least doing the things that he hopes will keep him at that level. He's highly educated, deeply introspective, very private, and always looking to learn something new, be studying the mysteries of writing the perfect song to computer programming to intense forms of meditation to careful study of the music industry… and one day, he wants to make a weezer movie—not a tour film, but some kind of actual movie. Weezer has been together for more than 30 years…there have been no break-ups and reunions…there haven't even been any official hiatuses. But Rivers has also taken up pickleball with a vengeance…he's a very good chess player, too…he's fascinated with Japanese culture. What else?...PETA once voted him “the sexiest celebrity vegetarian,” although he confesses to hating carrots…he doesn't have a middle name because his parents wanted him to choose one when he got old enough—but he never got around to it. Fox filmed a pilot for a tv show based on the years rivers went to harvard…and he once had a pet squirrel named “Mr. Peanutbutter. On this week's show we continue our discussion of Rick Beato's argument that music is too easy to make. We read your emails and take a look at the week's news. Is Music Getting Worse? - A listener followup I just listened to your podcast episode “Is Music Getting Worse,” related to Rick Beato's YouTube video, which I also watched a few days ago. He raised some intriguing points, both about changes over the years with sampling, autotune, and quantization, as well as how AI will undoubtedly impact the industry as well. It's a fascinating and complex topic, and I wanted to share some thoughts. First off, my daughter is a professional opera singer, so I am very sensitive to the fact that I would not want artists who are deep in their craft to be supplanted by technology. Losing the human aspect altogether would be a tragedy for us all, whether as creators or as consumers of music. Selfishly, for my daughter and for all artists, I want humans to be respected and compensated for the obvious heart and soul that they put into their craft. With respect to AI, one major and well-founded concern is that relying too heavily on AI could lead to a homogenization of music, where unique, human-driven creativity could become overshadowed by algorithms, resulting in music that degrades to the mean and lacks soul.  Which I would argue has happened well before AI has come on the scene. Having said that, AI also has the potential to enhance music production by automating tedious tasks and providing new tools for musicians, which could free up artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work. One aspect that often gets overlooked in these discussions is that music production isn't just about the creative performers—the singers and musicians. It involves a vast array of professionals, including audio and sound engineers, mastering engineers, and various other technical experts who all play a crucial role in shaping the final product. The Beatles used these talented engineers at Abbey Road to come up with iconic sounds that would never have been achievable by the members of the Beatles alone. So, one must ask, where is the line? As AI improves and enables the creation of individual tracks, or stems (currently most AI song generators provide fully formed sound waves), it could open up new avenues to innovate and bring different types of music together by mixing and arranging music in virtually unlimited ways. While the focus tends to be on how AI might impact the creative people who write, sing, and play songs, it's also worth considering how it could empower the broader community of producers. This technology might unlock new channels of creativity and collaboration that we haven't even imagined yet. In addition, for the creators, the use of AI song/sound generators as “sketch pads” for fleshing out songs, similar to how demo tapes were used prior to final recording, is a fascinating thought exercise. It could serve as a tool to experiment and develop ideas before committing to a final version.  Or to bring an idea to a group of real musicians to refine and play live. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I love Cheap Trick and the Scorps! I also love British new wave, Alt and Psychedelia. To “prove” a point, I used a service called UDIO. It is one of the services that you mentioned are being sued at the moment. I prompted the AI to give me song snippets in the style of British pop, Alt Rock, Psychedelia, etc. I took a bunch of these song snippets and stitched them together in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), very much the same way that music producers currently “create” full-blown songs. I have attached the MP3 for your listening “pleasure” (take with a big grain of salt!). I share this with you as a simple example of what could be. It is not a great song by any means; it's derivative, it's corny, and it will never make the charts, but that's not the point. If it was streaming at a bar in the background, I wouldn't think it was horrible; in fact, it might be great background music for that setting. And this is version 1 of this new technology. What will it be like in the next 5-10 years? I've been listening to you guys for at least that long. Think about how the audio and video industries have changed so dramatically during that time, whether with the 400-pound TVs you guys referenced or in the quality of streaming vs physical media we have seen over that time. You guys questioned whether AI would be successful in music. I only have to look at throngs of people going to EDM concerts where there is no band, just a DJ playing “stream of consciousness” with audio loops to know that this technology will definitely have a place. The questions are, where, to what extent and how will the money flow?? Eager to hear your thoughts. Great show, and I appreciate your perspectives on all things home audio, video, and automation. Joe Albanian
