Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 11, industrial espionage is the featured crime. This is Hoodwinked and Bamboozled by TG WolffDELIBERATIONKelly may have a clue but Grant and Alistair can use our help. There is no question that Charles “Tink” Teasling invented the Tinkinator 93. This is no question that Henry Brown, Tink's brother-in-law produced it. The question is who orchestrated the design getting from Tink to Brown? Here are the suspects in the order we met them:Minnie Teasling Brown, Tink's caretaking sister and Brown's silent partnerRoger Schmidt, investment banker and Tink's neighborAlexander Bogart, mechanical fabricator and Tink's renterHenry Brown, mechanical fabricator and Tink's brother-in-lawHere are the facts as Kelly and Grant know them:Tink Teasling filed for and received a dozen patents including one for a valve he called the Tinkinator 93. At a tradeshow, he saw the valve on a display by Alexander Bogart.Tink is a widower and a hoarder. He was certain the patent documents were in his house. Only two people regularly accessed the house: his sister Minnie and his neighbor Roger Schmidt. Henry Brown long ago stopped going to the house.Minnie Brown supports her brother with the little things in life. She has a good memory and attention to detail, which helps to keep the house from totally falling apart. Minnie remembers seeing the patents as she manages her brother's mail.Tink and Henry Brown constructed their shops side-by-side. Brown fabricates small devices for sale to local distributors. He claims all his devices were a joint design between he and Minnie. Her mechanical drawings decorate his office like artwork. His business recently improved with shipments now leaving several times a week.Tink now does his inventing from home and leases his shop out to Alexander Bogart. For some time after Tink moved out, Bogart continued to find files Tink hid in odd places, including the patent for the Tinkinator 93. Bogart admitted to studying the document but then added it to crate for Minnie to pick up with the rent.Bogart admitted to using the valve in the pipe display that showed off his invention—a large pump. He said he did not make the valve but doesn't recall where the valve came from specifically.Neighbor Roger Schmidt admits to seeing the patent and thinking it was a worthwhile invention. He had a falling out with Tink when he declined to invest in the gadget, not trusting Tink to get it to market or make a profit. He did invest with Alexander Bogart, further angering Tink.Who infringed on Tink's patented idea?ABOUT Industrial EspionageAccording to Wikipedia, Industrial Espionage gathers knowledge about one or more organizations and takes place in two main forms. It may include the acquisition of intellectual property, such as information on industrial manufacture, ideas, techniques and processes, recipes and formulas. Or it could include priviledged information, like pricing, research and

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Michael Bogart has deep musical roots which spread through many boundaries as well as a career in music spanning decades. Known primarily for his trumpet and trombone playing, he played the jazz trumpet chair (and conch shell) with the legendary Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Big Band in the late 990's. From 2000-2009 Michael was the lead trumpet, trombonist and background vocalist for soul super group Tower of Power and can be heard on several of their albums, including the critically acclaimed 40th Anniversary: The Fillmore Auditorium. He has also recorded with artists as diverse as Aerosmith, Puff Daddy, and his mothers' favorite, Neil Diamond. After taking a break from touring and recording to retire from the United States Navy, focus on his spiritual path and study jazz at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, Michael has been busy composing and recording his own music. His music is an earthy blend of soul influenced-straight ahead jazz and Hasidic Jewish nigunim (melodies). As well as being a Jewish Mensch.

Dezember 1941.

In the season finale of our Visionary Remakes season, we investigate two versions of The Maltese Falcon, the original from 1931 and the more famous 1941 version. The Maltese Falcon has almost become shorthand for both Humphrey Bogart and the beginning of film noir. That famous film was preceded by a film adaptation a decade earlier, which itself was preceded by the hard boiled crime novel a year prior. The 1941 film has totally eclipsed both the original adaptation and the book in popular consciousness. Perhaps rightly so. John Huston's directorial debut is a masterwork in writing, editing, and acting. It has also been touted as one of the more rewatchable films from the era due to its production design, clockwork plot, and Bogart's enigmatic vibes. The Maltese Falcon is a great example of why some films should be remade. The remake improves pretty much every aspect of the original film. But our discussion takes a turn when Dan questions whether Falcon is truly a noir film. We dive deep into this topic and how labels and genres can often obfuscate the significance and heritage of a film. If The Maltese Falcon is not the first big noir film, then what gives it such a high value among film lovers and filmmakers? The answer of course lies within the film itself, not a genre label.

The season for the Keokuk Chiefs golf team is being supported by Wyatt Moore, the Livestock Risk Management Partnership, and other local sponsors. In a recent interview, Coach Bogart shared insights into the team's composition and prospects. This year, the team consists of seven players, the smallest roster in Coach Bogart's tenure, but filled with promising talent. Key players include sophomores Carter Land and Ashton Snodgrass, who have varsity experience, along with eager freshmen Luke Ames, Mason Baker, and Colton Spicer. Despite their lack of varsity play, these freshmen have competed in youth tournaments, bringing a competitive edge and camaraderie to the team. As they prepare for their first meet on April 3rd, the team is focusing on collaboration and skill-building. The Keokuk Chiefs will face tough competition in the Southeastern Conference, with strong teams like Washington, Mont Pleasant, and Fairfield poised as formidable opponents. Coach Bogart is optimistic about the team's potential, as they engage in a mix of dual meets, invitationals, and 18-hole tournaments in the upcoming season.

This episode was originally released on September 9, 2014. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season, The Old Man is Still Alive. Humphrey Bogart is perhaps the most enduring icon of grown-up masculine cool to come out of Hollywood's first century. But much of what we think of when we think of Bogart — the persona of the tough guy with the secret soft heart, his pairing on-screen and off with Lauren Bacall — coalesced late in Bogart's life. Today we take a look at how Humphrey Bogart became Bogey, tracing his journey from blue blood beginnings through years of undistinguished work and outright failure (both in the movies and in love), to his emergence in the early 1940s as a symbol of wartime perseverance who could make sacrifice seem sexy. Finally, we'll look at what it took to get him to take the leap into a fourth marriage that seemed to saved his life … until the world's most glamorous stoic was faced with cancer. This episode was originally released on March 1, 2016. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season,The Old Man is Still Alive. In the late 1940s, as the country was moving to the right and there was pressure on Hollywood to do the same, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and John Huston all protested HUAC in ways that damaged their public personas and their ability to work in Hollywood. Hepburn's outspokenness resulted in headlines branding her a "Red" and, allegedly, audiences stoning her films. Bogart and Huston were prominent members of the Committee For the First Amendment, a group of Hollywood stars who came to Washington to support the Hollywood Ten -- and lived to regret it. With their career futures uncertain, the trio collaborated on the most difficult film any of them would ever make, The African Queen.

We cover the release of two fascinating and revealing documentaries. Both take a sideways look at men we're familiar with from their public – and vastly different – profiles: one as a world leader and the other as an icon of Hollywood's golden age. ‘The Bibi Files', directed by Alexis Bloom, uses leaked interrogation footage of Benjamin Netanyahu to explore contemporary Israeli politics. Then, ‘Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes', directed by Kathryn Ferguson, takes a behind-the-scenes look at actor Humphrey Bogart. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textWILLIAM WYLER: PART 2 OF 4: THE DESPERATE HOURSPaired with last week's Detective Story, TGTPTU's Big Willie Winter continues with THE DESPERATE HOURS (1955), another black-and-white film adaptation by William Wyler and a rare feature from the director to not earn a single Academy Award nomination. Perhaps first home invasion picture, The Desperate Hours was adapted from a book that itself was inspired by tragic, real events (bonus fact: Richard Nixon would become involved in a lawsuit defending Time Magazine against the real-life victims who hadn't agreed to a photo shoot in questionable taste at their former family home). Playing the lead heavy, Humphrey Bogart who with his character's younger brother (played by Dewey Martin who, fun fact, was first married to a woman from Portland, Oregon and subsequently singer Peggy Lee) and a lug with more muscle than smarts on the lam take over a suburban home (bonus fact: the fictional house where the story takes place would later be used for the television show Leave It to Beaver) and soon butt heads with head-of-the household Daniel Hilliard, played by Fredric March, after seeing a bicycle left outside, a key indicator of a family with kids or, as those on the run know, prime hostage material. Wyler shows his mastery as a director getting an amazing performance from a child actor playing March's son and providing depth and gravitas to all the characters. Oddly cast from the script and the book, Bogart at age 56 was significantly older than the original story would have his Glenn Griffin (Paul Newman, who would play the role on stage before the film was released, was only 30 years old). But the performance is nuanced, perhaps measured by Bogart's at the time being diagnosed with the cancer that would soon kill him. During the course of The Desperate Hours (bonus snark: perhaps more accurately entitled The Desperate Afternoon Leading into that Night and on into Late the Next Day), Wyler ties in his recurring themes of pacifism, masculinity as performance, and the dangers of the police state in this film that, while feeling set-bound, it should be recalled that the play was written and performed after. All the same, a truck flips, a person is run over, and March has to pretend he's drunk to disgust a visiting schoolteacher and save his family. Good stuff. So give up sixtyish minutes for respite, ours will discuss it: flowers for Wyler, service ages for WWII vets, the elusive reality that started the Boomer Generation, and perhaps try a Bogart impersonation or two.
