In this episode of Tales From The Green Room, the hosts sit down with musician, podcaster, and all-around force of nature, Andy Frasco – band leader of Andy Frasco & The U.N.  Recorded while lounging outside on the Pulmas-Sierra County Fairgrounds, fresh of his “crazy” set at the legendary High Sierra Music Festival  Andy shares his experiences and reflections on his musical journey, mixing levity with addressing serious issues during the entertaining conversation.Andy also praises High Sierra's atmosphere and elaborates on the importance of community and family at festivals, stressing the need to preserve live music culture. Recalling his own leap into music influenced by his piano teacher, Holly Bowling, Andy muses about how he built his career from scratch, overcoming his once-cavalier use of substances giving way to a focus on writing meaningful songs. The conversation touches on his evolution as a performer and songwriter, his work ethic, and his love for entertaining fans. In this laid back and humorous chat, Andy expresses gratitude for his mentors, including Dave Schools, Vince Herman, and George Porter, Jr., while discussing his podcast, which offers real-life conversations with seasoned musicians, aiming to provide inspiration to others. Long live High Sierra!HIGHLIGHTS“ Long live High Sierra.!” This is bigger than us. This festival, the idea of this festival is important…. families come together, music is being made, kids laughing, smiling, families laughing and smiling. You don't see that anymore. People camping. That's why we gotta keep these things sacred …that's my goal. -Andy Frasco on the greatness of High Sierra Music Festival. I stopped writing songs to make everyone happy. And I started writing songs to make me happy. You can't preach happiness unless you're happy with yourself. And I'm finally in a spot where I'm good with myself.-Andy Frasco on his approach to writing songs and the good place he is in. It doesn't matter, when you start loving yourself, you just gotta love yourself. Even if you're 60, even if you're 70. Even if you're 10,. We gotta remember when we were seven years old. on the fucking swings, eating some ice cream, laughing by yourself, you know? That's it. In Episode #242 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar chats with John Robb — musician, journalist, author, broadcaster, and founder of Louder Than War — about his brand-new book Live Forever: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Oasis. From fronting cult punk bands The Membranes and Goldblade to coining the term Britpop and becoming the first UK journalist to interview Nirvana, John has been at the frontline of music for decades. Alongside his career as a musician and broadcaster, he has written definitive books on punk, goth, and the acclaimed biography The Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop. Now, with Oasis back in the spotlight thanks to their massive Live 25 tour, he turns his attention to one of the greatest rock 'n' roll stories ever told — the turbulent, era-defining journey of the band. In this episode, John discusses how he approached writing Live Forever, the rise of Oasis from Manchester clubs to worldwide fame, and why the band still matters three decades on. He also reflects on his earlier work with The Stone Roses, how he balances life as a musician, journalist, and author, and why he continues to push boundaries — on stage, on the page, and online. In this episode, Tales From The Green Room presents their conversations with Joe Marcinek and Jeremy Hoenig recorded before their respective performances during Jazz Fest 2025 in New Orleans – featuring two  musicians swimming in the same music circles in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally - and both connected with Melvin Seals!   Marcinek joins the show before his stellar appearance leading Dead Funk Summit during the Crawfish Festival at The Broadside, and is joined by soulful percussionist, drummer, vocalist, Rick King – a member of the Summit on this day.  King talks about getting drawn into the Grateful Dead vibe, including with his own band, Rick King's Royal Hustle, elaborating on how magic happens on stage with Marcinek. Hoenig sits down with the hosts before holding down the beat on drums at his gig with Melvin Seals & JGB at Café Istanbul -  made possible by venue host Mitch Stein, responsible for curating a stellar lineup of musicians at the venue during Jazz Fest. The Marcinek segment – recorded the very day his new album, The Groove Sessions, was released -  delves into Joe's late entry into music, his love for New Orleans sounds, the evolution of his Dead Funk Summit project now taking on a life of its own, and the special energy created by different musicians joining the venture around the country - including the likes of George Porter, Jr. and the aforementioned, Melvin Seals. The Crawfish King, Shaggy Davis, even makes a cameo during the interview! Hoenig talks about his own musical journey  from being inspired by his father's record collection to his current gig with the iconic Seals, playing with Camille Boudin of The Radiators, and reflects on “falling into the groove” playing beats the first time he entered the New Orleans music scene. Jeremy identifies a cadre of his favorite New Orleans drummers and how playing with Melvin Seals & JGB is the perfect fit for him. Joe Marcinek, Rick King, and Jeremy Hoenig go in depth sharing their experiences in the music scene, their love for improvisation, and the collaborative spirit they embody, providing for a heartwarming and informative episode.HIGHLIGHTSWhen you have a band that plays all the time, it's easy to kind of go through the motions…where if you've never played together or it's something new, everyone's really locked in. Are we hitting the changes? Are we going to the move? Any little change that a musician does, that's when the magic happens.-Joe Marcinek on brining in different musicians to his "Dead Funk Summit"I read something about Miles Davis saying, “ I don't talk to my musicians about music, because if I would have to talk to 'em about it, I hired the wrong people in the first place. And I always think about that.-Rick King on the possibility of creating situations where magic can happen on stage among musicians, if you talk too much about it. You can imagine how proud I am  to be playing this music, which for me has all the styles that I love, and  the music I gravitate towards. It's blues, it's funk, it's reggae, it's jazz, it's country. It's all these rhythms. And Jerry knew, when he had his own band, he wanted to explore all those different things. So that's why I feel it's a very good fit for me… and personally, I just, I enjoy it. It lets me have everything that I love in one band.-Jeremy Hoenig on being a member of "Melvin Seals & JGB"PHOTOSBackstage Photos at NOLA Crawfish Fest – 4.29.25 – by Appelbaum ImagesSPONSOR SHOUT OUTSSpecial Thanks to Son Vo  (Jerry's Middle Finger) for his expert audio engineering skills editing the interview with Joe Marcinek and Rick King- recorded in a very noisy, outdoor backstage area at the Broadside in New Orleans during the Crawfish Festival - making this episode possible! Son Vo is also a talented writer! Tracii Guns of LA Guns joins Greg Koch for a refreshingly honest exploration of what makes rock and roll endure through decades of industry upheaval. Their conversation weaves through Tracii's musical awakening at age five—hearing Led Zeppelin's theremin breakdown in "Whole Lotta Love" from the backseat of a car—to building and maintaining LA Guns through countless lineup changes and industry shifts. With remarkable candor, Tracii takes us behind the scenes of his evolution as a guitarist, from his early days playing "Scorpion-style heavy metal with a little Jimmy Page thrown in" to his current approach. Guitar aficionados will delight in their deep dive into equipment - Tracii's journey from traditional JCM 800 Marshalls to embracing digital technology while maintaining his signature sound. "You keep changing stuff but you keep getting the same sound," his tech once observed. The pair unpack the mystique of legendary guitarists like Jimmy Page, revealing that greatness often comes from simplicity rather than complexity. "For all the magic that he is, he bought his main guitar for 500 bucks from Joe Walsh," Tracii notes, suggesting that true mastery comes from dedication to playing, not gear acquisition.Perhaps most valuable is Tracii's hard-earned wisdom about music industry survival: "You don't need a million people, you just need enough people to support you. You get 10,000 people buying everything you do, you're done." In an age of algorithm-chasing and viral fame, Tracii and Greg remind us that authentic connection through live performance remains the beating heart of rock and roll.Want to see these two legends join forces? Catch Tracii Guns and Greg Koch performing together at the Basement East on August 27th—a rare opportunity to witness their musical chemistry in person.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Every year on his birthday, my dad and I sit down for a conversation. It started when he turned 76, and with a few exceptions, we've done it ever since - capturing an ongoing record of where his head and heart are at that particular moment. Over the years we've talked about music, memory, politics, travel, the craft of performing, and the art of living. These annual conversations have become a kind of time-lapse portrait: the same two people returning to the mic, but always a little changed. This year, as Ben turns 82, the theme that emerges is that he is “still auditioning for the role of myself.”  We talk about what it means to keep creating, to stay curious, and to hold on to your sense of fun as the outside world speeds up and your personal world contracts.  Ben is, as always, the consummate jazz philosopher. “History is what we make of it and what we live every day,” he tells me. “We're all feeling pain, and you can't deny it. [...] But the response to pain is something separate from the pain itself. And in that distance between the pain and the response to pain is where our work is.” He shares stories from his days hosting NPR's Jazz Alive and later Sidran on Record, explains how he came to be the first person to record Billy Joel's “New York State Of Mind,” reflects on maintaining the outsider's perspective, and weighs in on the latest curveball: AI-generated music.  If you've been following this series of birthday talks, then this is a great addition to the canon. If this is your first one, welcome - you're dropping into the middle of a conversation that's been going on for years, and will, I hope, keep going for many more. Ben's most recent album Are We There Yet (Live at the Sunside) was released earlier this summer.   www.leosidran.substack.com www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/studios www.bensidran.com

Greg Koch sits down with guitar virtuoso Dweezil Zappa for a fascinating deep dive into musical authenticity, technical mastery, and the challenge of preserving a legendary legacy. Their conversation reveals the extraordinary dedication required to perform Frank Zappa's intricate compositions, with Dweezil candidly sharing his 14-year journey to truly internalize his father's musical vocabulary. What begins as a discussion about guitar techniques evolves into profound insights about musical connection. Dweezil explains why, despite growing up as Frank Zappa's son, he initially gravitated toward more guitar-centric players, such as Eddie Van Halen, before tackling his father's complex work. He compares performing Frank's arrangements to an "orchestral mindset" where precision and teamwork are paramount, revealing that despite years of touring, he must essentially relearn most pieces before each performance. The conversation takes unexpected turns through musical philosophy, modern guitar culture, and the realities of today's music industry. Dweezil offers a valuable perspective for independent musicians, suggesting that cultivating meaningful relationships with a dedicated fanbase is far more sustainable than chasing mainstream success: "Instead of trying to get a dollar from a million people, what if you cultivated a relationship with 10,000 people who want to spend a hundred dollars every year?" Throughout their exchange, both guitarists reflect on finding balance between technical skill and emotional connection, agreeing that the ability to move an audience often transcends pure virtuosity.

There's something uniquely captivating about listening to two master musicians simply talk shop. When Nashville session legend Tom Bukovac (affectionately known as "Uncle Larry") sits down with Greg Koch for this episode of Chewing the Gristle, their conversation unfolds like a masterclass.Bukovac pulls back the curtain on the Nashville session scene with refreshing candor. "It doesn't matter if you're playing for a barely signed new artist or Paul McCartney," he explains. "A sideman gig is a sideman gig. The only thing that changes is the dough and the prestige." This hard-earned wisdom comes from decades navigating an industry that demands technical perfection, psychological resilience, and emotional intelligence. The episode weaves through fascinating territory – from Bukovac's journey giving himself just one year to make it in Nashville (spoiler: he was on a tour bus within months), to the psychological challenges of session work. "I've been on sessions when people hated everything I played," he admits. "I remember coming home from sessions crying because I felt like such a failure." Yet this vulnerability transformed into strength, creating an iron-clad professional who now plays alongside artists like Vince Gill.Guitar enthusiasts will appreciate their deep dive into vintage instruments, including Bukovac's prized 1957 Gibson Les Paul Junior. Their shared language of influences – from Hendrix to Albert King to Jerry Reed – reveals how deeply personal guitar playing remains despite its technical dimensions.Perhaps most illuminating is Bukovac's perspective on what truly matters in music: "These are people's dreams you're working on. This is not just a session." That blend of technical mastery and emotional intelligence perfectly captures why some musicians remain eternally in demand.Whether you're a working musician or simply love peeking behind the curtain of the music industry, this conversation delivers honest insights you won't find in guitar magazines or music documentaries. On this episode of On That Note, I'm joined once again by my most frequent guest, Elijah Johnston. He's back with a brand-new album, Stupid Soul, out now on Strolling Bones Records. We dive into the songwriting process behind the record, the themes and intentions that shaped it, and the emotional thread tying it all together.
