Geri is joined by Dan Perlman—co-creator and co-star of FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS—to talk about the show's journey from a short to a network series, how the real Dan and Kevin compare to their onscreen characters, and the importance of hearing judgment-free feedback. Dan Perlman is a writer, stand-up comedian, and director. As a comedian, he has been featured on Comedy Central and was named one of the New Faces at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. He wrote and directed the 2020 short film CRAMMING, which won the Audience Award at the 2020 Brooklyn Film Festival and First Prize at the 2020 Rhode Island International Film Festival. Alongside Kevin Iso, Dan also co-created the award-winning web series "Flatbush Misdemeanors," the first installment of which received the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Short at the 2018 Florida Film Festival. Dan's latest project, FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS, is an adaptation of the original web series. The dark comedy stars Dan and Kevin as fictionalized versions of themselves – young, up-and-coming comedians struggling to thrive in Flatbush, Brooklyn while tackling issues like race, gentrification, mental health and more. The series premiered in May 2021 and season 1 is available to stream on Showtime. -- Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ -- Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast

*ep starts at 23:45 Today I'm going to talk about the Motor City Hitman-Chester Wheeler Campbell. One of the best assassins to work for the Mafia and Detroit Criminal Underground. He got a taste for murder in his mid-20s and decided to turn it into a career. He was so efficient that he was never directly tied to a murder once he became a full time hit man and enforcer. He was found with notebooks containing over 300 different names of potential targets, and 50 of those 300 were people who were missing or found dead. Today, I'll talk about his early life, his early crime days, his prime assassin time, and how the authorities finally put him away for life. What You'll Learn: THE IDEA: If you're in a leadership role today, you surely didn't get there by accident. You have vision. You're confident. And you're ready to offer support and lightning-quick responses. But if you don't effectively communicate these qualities to your people, how will they know you embody them? Frankly, they won't. THE WHY: Despite leaders giving themselves gold stars in communication, only 13% of U.S. employees say their leaders communicate well, according to Gallup research. And that's a colossal problem: 93% of workers surveyed by the Brunswick Group report that “leadership that communicates directly and transparently” is what keeps them on the job, bested only by pay and the ability to move up. You've probably already heard about the controversy or even weighed in on Dave Chappelle's final comedy special for Netflix, The Closer, where the comedy legend spends most of the hour taking an irreverent and critical look at the collective struggle of LGBTQ folks.Despite being a comedy special everyone loves to hate, Chappelle does bring up some wonderful sex positive material like wondering what MLK Jr would have to say about glory holes. Unfortunately, Chapelle proclaims himself team TERF while perpetuating some harmful ideas about trans bodies and compares trans women's genitals to vegan burgers. The Closer is probably the longest set any comedian has ever spent talking on LGBTQ+ issues and is way more complicated than clickbait articles would have you believe. All controversy aside, we are puzzled that Dave Chappelle would align himself with the same regressive people he claimed were the reason why he abruptly walked away from a 50 million dollar paycheck when he quit his successful show on Comedy Central over 15 years ago.MATT BROWN: https://www.msbrowncomedy.com/GET YOUR FREE ONE YEAR DOT GAY DOMAIN: www.feastoffun.gayACCESS THOUSANDS OF LEGENDARY FEAST OF FUN SHOWS

This week on 8111, Corey Rosen. Corey answers the question of “what would an 8111 theme song sound like”. Corey grew up in Rochester, NY. His dad is a children's dentist and his mom is a teacher. He's the middle child of three brothers. As a kid he went to sleep away camp in the Catskill mountains where they put on plays. Theatre became a permanent fixture in his life. Corey gravitated towards filmmaking as a kid, remaking some of his favorite character driven films with friends from the neighborhood. He went on to study Radio, TV & Film at Northwestern University. Corey worked as a producer on a student comedy TV show called “Stinky's Pub” and there he learned a number of skills. After his sophomore year he worked as an intern at Jim Henson studios and Comedy Central. The following year Corey applied to the LucasArts internship program and was accepted, in part via a shared interest in golf by Lisa Vaughn. He interned in the scanning and optical department in the Summer of 1993. Corey was in a near fatal car accident on interstate 580 and kept working at ILM from his hospital bed. This led to a full time job that lasted for the next 12 years. Corey and Scott Leberecht created their own short films at ILM including the Sprit of Spawn and the Sprit of Sleepy Hallow. These fun short films led to an opportunity to work as a writer developing original projects for Lucasfilm Animation. He then returned to doing cloth work as a TD and started to feel like it was time to move on. Post ILM he has worked at The Orphanage, Image Movers Digital, and now at Tippett Studio writing theme park ride films. Corey recently wrote a book called, “Your Story Well Told” in connection with work he's done on The Moth on NPR. It was great to reconnect with Corey and hear his story.

Chappelle made his film debut at the age of twenty in the 1993 Mel Brooks comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Chappelle then took other film roles (including a small part in the Eddie Murphy-starring feature film The Nutty Professor in 1996, and co-writing and starring in stoner film Half Baked in 1998) and attempted several failed television pilots before launching his own series, Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central in 2003. The show was wildly popular and ran for two successful seasons and was nominated for two Emmy Awards before Chappelle abruptly left during production of the third season, though Comedy Central later aired the episodes created without him. Chappelle cited the fact that he did not like the direction the show was going, that he was overworked with 20-hour workdays, and did not have time to devote to his stand-up career as reasons for leaving. Walking away from the show meant the cancellation of a $50 million dollar contract with Comedy Central. Dr Boyce Watkins is a Finance PhD and founder of The Black Business School. If you want to get back to basics and have a refresher course on the fundamentals of communication, speaking, and leadership, this episode is for you. My guest today is Joel Schwartzberg. You may remember him from one of our most popular episodes, How to Make a Point That Sticks. Joel is a leadership communications coach and author and today he brings his tips to help you create a "language of leadership." Joel's key message: "The most powerful tool you have as a leader—to inform, engage, and inspire—is your voice. Yet all too often, our words fall flat; we get caught in our head, fail to truly understand our audience, or simply flub the landing. But it's our words and awareness of their impact that make the difference between simply managing teams and inspiring them to do their best work. " We discuss: Why some women come across as aggressive if they are straight forward The importance of gender neutral language Ideas around what to do if you are interrupted in a meeting and how to deal with that Why leaders need to focus their communication on inspiration, not just information The importance of shifting language from merely sharing problems to solving them Do's and don'ts for conveying empathy and hope Easy ways leaders can improve the effectiveness of meetings through communication The three simple words that quickly reveal if you're getting your point across or not More about Joel: Joel Schwartzberg is a leadership communications coach whose clients include American Express, Blue Cross Blue Shield, State Farm Insurance, the Brennan Center for Justice, and Comedy Central. Joel's articles on effective communication have appeared in Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and Toastmaster magazine. He is the author of Get to the Point! Sharpen Your Message and Make Your Words Matter, which Seth Godin calls “a manifesto for giving talks that make a difference,” and The Language of Leadership: How to Engage and Inspire Your Team, which Kevin Eikenberry says “will make your communication more purposeful, meaningful, and inspirational.” Learn more about Joel and his coaching practice here. “For years I was referring to myself as a Swiss Army Knife of talent,” says Jennica McCleary. Artists often say, “and then one thing led to another,” but what does that mean? Jennica McCleary is a Bette Midler impersonator based in Orland, Florida. Her incredible story of how she became Walt Disney World's go-to Winnifred Sanderson is an inspirational one for the ages. Also getting the blessing from the bombastic, austentatious, and Divine Miss M ain't so bad either.  “Honey, if you sing -- you'll make money. Good luck,” says Midler to McCleary.  McCleary is an actress, burlesque performer, producer, and Bette Midler impersonator who also happened to survive Breast Cancer. A hard worker, McCleary found herself more upset at having to cancel or reschedule gigs in order to get treatment. What are the lessons in this? How does this help an artist take time for themselves and discover what's important? What are the expectations we put on ourselves?  Her Winnie Sanderson is the gift that keeps on giving -- and it's all because McCleary showed up to an audition she knew she was perfect for. In this episode, we hear an UNHEARD story of how the casting process with Disney works. We also unpack the importance of being specific with one's career, even with choosing which auditions to attend. Plus, we dish on rumors regarding Hocus Pocus 2! “Being a mimic is hard,” says McCleary. “There's expectations that people have. There's expectations that people have with Winifred. And you've got to find the way to make who you are as a performer work in that while still giving them those nuances that they want.” That's not it -- McCleary is bringing her show Winnie's Rock Cauldron Cabaret to The Green Room 42 in NYC for an incredible and highly anticipated Halloween celebration on October 31st at 7pm and 9:30pm. This performance is going to be epic, so make sure you buy tickets at https://thegreenroom42.venuetix.com/show/details/NZG2rfezEBrSrVmMKxTm/1635721200000 A classically trained Singer/Dancer/Actor who also dabbles in Burlesque, Wig Design, and Choreography, Jennica McCleary is best known for her work as a Bette Midler Tribute artist. In addition to her self-produced shows Divine Deception and Winnie's Rock Cauldron Cabaret, Jennica originated Winifred Sanderson at Disney's Magic Kingdom production ‘Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular' 2015. Her Regional Theatre credits include Fun Home, Jekyll & Hyde, Sweeney Todd, and Cabaret. Jennica has also worked with Legends in Concert and Pattycake Productions, and been seen on The Freeform Network, MTV, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Comedy Central's Upright Citizen's Brigade.  Bette Midler Tribute Artist, Jennica McCleary, originated Winifred Sanderson at Disney's Magic Kingdom production ‘Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular' 2015 (a now viral video) in Orlando, FL. She has worked with Legends in Concert and Pattycake Productions and has been featured MTV, VH1, Entertainment Tonight. She was also featured in The Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Bash on Freeform as well as Freeform's Halloween Road. That formative experience led her to performing stand-up comedy. Experiencing comedy culture made her realize that she could offer a lot of positive influence to the industry. She thought she could make a difference for the current state of comedy as well as the other little comedy-loving weirdos who want to see more folks who look like them on stage. My guest this week is the brilliant comedian, Jocelyn Chia. The speed of her ascent in the comedy world has been impressive to watch, given that she had absolutely zero involvement in the world of stand-up before 2014. She'd barely watched any stand-up let alone performed on stage, which makes her opening for the legendary Bill Burr last month even more impressive. As well as having appeared on AXS TV, MTV and Comedy Central, she's rapidly gaining recognition in industry circles and is becoming a firm favourite on the New York circuit where she holds down a regular spot at two of the city's most iconic clubs, the Comedy Cellar and Gotham Comedy Club. Only a few days ago, Jocelyn was also chosen as the face of comedy for the new NYC campaign celebrating the reopening of New York's arts scene, alongside some Broadway legends.Born and raised in Singapore, Jocelyn gave up a high flying career at law firm Weil, and later as a management consultant, in order to pursue what she felt to be her true calling. Chatting with comedians is always good fun and if any of you feel like you might have a true calling that you've been ignoring up until now, this conversation might be just the motivation you need to start walking that path. Links:Instagram @jocelyncomedyhttps://www.youtube.com/JocelynChiaComedy http://www.jocelynchia.com/Home of the podcast:LinkedIn: @michaelxcampionInstagram: @michaelxcampionWeekly Newsletter  'Thursday Thoughts' www.michaelxcampion.com/subscribeMentions:Stephen Cope - The Great Work of Your Life: A Guide for the Journey to Your True CallingJason LeongSam MorrilTJ Miller in Silicon ValleyAziz AnsariAnthony JeselnikAli WongJerry Seinfeld
