The Columbia Chamber of Commerce describes Columbia as a great place to live, learn, work and play. Columbia Chamber of Commerce president Matt McCormick joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. They tackled the issues of homelessness and crime during the interview and they also discussed the importance of the new $220-million I-70 Rocheport bridge. Former Columbia Mayor Brian Treece, who later served on Missouri's Highways and Transportation Commission, describes the December ribbon-cutting ceremony as a once-in-a-lifetime event. The new Lance Corporal Leon Deraps I-70 Missouri River bridge at Rocheport is now open. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says more than 37,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. That includes about 8,800 tractor trailers. Chamber president McCormick says the new bridge is generational, adding that one side of the new bridge is the same width as the former I-70 Rocheport bridge was. Mr. McCormick also discussed last fall's Chamber trip to Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He tells listeners that two big issues that came up were university research and also housing. Mr. McCormick also discussed the $20-million expansion of the MU Research Reactor (MURR) in Columbia. The three-story addition is expected to expand MURR's research and medical isotope production space. Mr. McCormick and Fred also discussed Schneider Electric's proposed $73-million expansion at their facility on Columbia's Route B. While Matt McCormick was born and raised in Texas, he's spent the last 12 years in Columbia. He says the Columbia Chamber of Commerce has about 1,000 members representing about 50,000 employees. Mr. McCormick tells listeners that about 80 percent of Columbia Chamber members have fewer than 20 employees:

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce has made the beautification of the I-70 and Highway 63 interchange a top priority. Residents have complained for years about trash and litter in that area. Others complain about panhandling in the area. Others want Columbia to consider what Warrenton and O'Fallon have done with their I-70 interchanges. Columbia Chamber president Matt McCormick tells 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" that funding beautification efforts will be a public-private partnership:

Next, they give some love to Stanford after its big sweep of Arizona State on the road and then explain the bizarre weekend the ACC had scheduling-wise.Finally, Steve shares the remarkable story of Xavier's Matt McCormick before a brief discussion of Ole Miss' Calvin Harris' 4-HR game vs. Missouri to close out the pod.

He shares how OYNB coaches and members mentored and motivated him to live an improved lifestyle after deciding that an alcohol-free lifestyle would give him more enjoyment, more time and more opportunities. Dana Veraldi is an illustrator, ceramist, doula, visual artist, and mom. Dana is best known for her hand-drawn portraits of cultural icons and her label DEERDANA, which she founded with partner Kevin Tekinel. Been following her illustrations since day one, which I have no idea what day that was but when her illustrations were popped up on American Apparel tees, murals on Bedford Ace, plates at restaurants such as Escuela in Los Angeles. Huge fan of Dana's Q+A series where she interviews my favorites such as Matt McCormick, J Scott, Chris Black, and Kilo Kish. Remember the early 2000s when things were simpler and hipster culture was in and collaborating for big brands were cool? Collaborations with Playboy, GAP, Collette, Opening Ceremony, Theory, Adidas, Tory Burch. People who are your favorite E Hollywood stars have worn Deer Dana such as FKA Twigs, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Amanda Seyfried, Orlando Bloom, Jonah Hill, Lupita Nyongo, Dakota Fanning, Justin Bieber, Jay Z the list goes on. I would like to think everyone has worn a Deer Dana tee if you were alive from 2010–2015. I don't usually call people legends on my podcast but Dana is a legend. I don't think John Legend has worn a Deer dana tee and we can all live without knowing that. Matt McCormick and Brady Davis invite Ramsey into their wheelhouse of Gallatin River Valley goose hunting near Bozeman, Montana. The local waterfowling culture is all about big honkers and ducks over local grain-fields, but pretty much takes a backseat to big game hunting, fly fishing and other plentiful outdoor activities. Following a pound-sized moose burgers supper and cold beer, they soon get to the heart of things. See, nobody comes to Bozeman by accident, and once there, few people ever want to leave. How'd Matt and Brady get started hunting and what lead them to Bozeman? What's the goose hunting really like in the Gallatin River Valley? Why can Bozeman be described as a perfect balance of hippies and cowboys? Is it more about making a living or making a life? You decide. In this episode, we talk to Cactus Jack artist Don Toliver, who released his first studio album Heaven or Hell back in March. When the pandemic hit, tours, festivals, and the ensuing promotional appearances were instantly canceled, leaving Toliver in a bit of a holding pattern. In some ways, it paused the momentum on his career, but it also gave him time to reflect on dropping an album he feels is his best work to date (2:09). Toliver also talks about working with creative greats like photographer Kenneth Capello (1:20) and fine artist Matt McCormick (2:09), who did the cover art for Heaven or Hell, and why this is the ideal time to lock himself in the studio and avoid all distractions (9:43). The following interview has been edited and condensed. Jian DeLeon: You've worked with Kenneth Cappello for a bit, most recently on that Jackboys SNEEZE magazine cover. How did that project come together? Don Toliver: Ken shot “Can't Feel My Legs.” So me and him really been locked in, but it was definitely a pleasure ti have him him to take those photos. SNEEZE magazine is definitely a great a look. Anything that got to do with me and the whole gang is always a plus. JD: One thing I appreciate is the eclectic range of influences you have, from Toro Y Moi to working with Matt McCormick on your album art. What made McCormick's aesthetic a good fit for you? DT: One of our friends Easy Otabor was the man who made the call on Matt McCormick. Easy brought it to the table and everybody was rocking with it. After that, me and Matt just locked in. He understood what I wanted, and we made magic. JD: If this pandemic hadn't hit, you'd be on tour right now for Heaven and Hell. How are you keeping the energy up post-album release? DT: I really fought for that moment for me to be outside and touch people — that moment I dropped my greatest work to this day — and it kind of got taken away. It put me back in the same position I was in before, but I was just able to drop some of my best work before the storm came. JD: In a previous interview that you grew up with a lot of video games, some of the ones you talked about were Jak and Daxter and the older Grand Theft Auto games. Have you gotten back into gaming during quarantine? DT: Honestly, I've been just using this time to get in the studio more than probably I ever could. I have the studio booked all to myself. In many ways it's a “no distraction” time. There's a lot of time for me to figure out myself more than I've ever figured myself out. I've been in the studio trying to cook up crazy records, thinking of moves to make, and whatever I want to do for myself at this point. JD: What's your quarantine drip like? Do you live in Jackboys gear? DT: I wear hoodies, sweatpants, and slippers, man. I haven't put a pair of shoes on all quarantine. I'm wearing a lot of Jackboys merch; I'm wearing the Heaven or Hell merch; I'm definitely merched out right now. Stay tuned for new episodes of Vibe Check every Tuesday and Thursday.

Northern Kentucky rockers Frontier Folk Nebraska's name is “basically just words” that singer/guitarist Mike Hensley said popped out to them as they got their start a decade ago. As they kick off their Warpig EP SXSW Tour on Thursday, March 9th in Nashville, the rock 'n' roll foursome leaves no false pretenses about the reputation they’ve earned as a set list-shunning live band. “(Not having a set list) scared him to death when he first started,” Hensley said, pointing to bassist Matt McCormick, who came on in 2014 with drummer Mark Becknell. “This is who we are. We can’t get up and try and morph into something else. It’s either going to work or it’s not for everybody else. We’re there. We’re just going to be ourselves.” Taking the stage at the largest music festival of its kind would give anybody stage fright, but Frontier Folk Nebraska is staying super chill about its swing through the Deep South before hitting South by Southwest on March 18 in Austin, Texas. The 11-stop tour celebrates the release of their four-song EP Warpig, available March 24 via digital download and on cassette tape. Yes, you read correctly. Cassette. Too bad my dearly departed 2000 Pontiac Grand Am now rusting at a Tri-State scrap yard is my closest existing link to a cassette player. Setlist: - Girls Like Wine - Cut You Loose - interview - - Sunken Ship - Ghost on a Tap
This week on "State of Wonder," the Blazer talks about his side-gig as a rapper, Portland's indie remix pioneer brings home the win, Portland Community Media gets an update and more.Eugene Opera Hits the Pause Button - 1:25This week the Eugene Opera faced the music with a public meeting about its finances. Taking into account staff and office costs, the Eugene Opera needs $230,000 to stay alive through the end of the fiscal year this summer and has suspended the rest of its season. Trail Blazer Damian Lillard on Rapping and Starting a Record Label - 6:57You may know Damian Lillard for his buzzer beating shots on the basketball court: He was the NBA Rookie of the Year in his first season with the Trail Blazers in 2012, and he just extended a 5 year contract to stay on in Rip City. But you may not know that Lillard is also a musician. Last year, he released his debut album, “The Letter O,” under the moniker Dame DOLLA and launched his own record label called Front Page Music. Portland's Remix Pioneer, RAC, Wins Grammy - 12:27Portlander Andre Allen Anjos just brought home the city’s only Grammy this year for his remix of Bob Moses’ “Tearing Me Up.” Working under the name RAC, Anjos first found success with his remix of The Shins’ “Sleeping Lessons,” which was featured on Pitchfork then released as a B-side by the band themselves. He quickly became the go-to guy for indie groups, working with everyone from Death Cab for Cutie to The Yeah Yeah Yeahs — to say nothing of the mega stars like U2, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.Anjos invited us into his studio to take apart how he remixed Odesza's "Say My Name," which was nominated for a Grammy last year.Making Public Access TV Cool For a New Generation - 22:27From "Wayne's World" to "UHF," public access television doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation. But that's about to change at Portland's station. Formerly known as Portland Community Media, the organization is renovating the building and rebranding itself as Open Signal, a media arts center where you can learn not only TV, but also storytelling, podcasting, coding, mixed reality, and other forms of digital media. A Vintage Airstream Trailer Transforms into a Podcast Studio - 30:30Curled up in the corner of Open Signal’s parking lot is a beautifully restored, vintage Airstream trailer that doubles as a mobile podcast studio. StreamPDX is an outgrowth of the late, lamented DIY makerspace, the XOXO Outpost. In this unconventional space, aspiring journalists and audiophiles have the opportunity to record and produce their own podcast. The Dark, Lovely Sounds of the 1939 Ensemble - 37:23Portland-based 1939 Ensemble is not just a jazz group. Their atypical beats slowly build momentum, creating an ominous wave of sound that is both unsettling and delightful, sounding like a bunch of jazz musicians were tasked to write a post-rock soundtrack for an edgy cop show. With vibraphone. New Documentary Explores Narrowly Averted Nuclear Disasters, With a Personal Twist - 44:07In 1964, the air force pilot Thomas Waldo McCormick got a mission to fly a B-52 carrying two 9-megaton thermonuclear bombs from Massachusetts to Georgia. It hit bad weather about halfway through its flight, and crashed in snowy woods outside of Washington, D.C, nearly averting nuclear disaster. McCormick's grandson, Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick, made a film about the crash entitled “Buzz One Four.”

Chuck Magid grew up as he calls it, "Full blooded Carney." His father and grandfather both owned carnivals and Chuck aand his brother grew up travelling with the show, working games and rides. The first game he and his brother invented was when they were around 8. It was a duckpond where little toy ducks floated around and little kids who couldn t play any other game would come by, their parents would cough up 5 and for that the kid got to pickup a duck and get a 1 prize. Now Chuck is the guitar player and sings in The Orient Groove, an Orlando band currently on tour around the South. Chuck happenedtowander into Wayfare to see what the mxing board andmics were all about and joined in. While Chuck and his brother were working rides at the fair, Matt McCormick was also traveling the country, roping calves in the rodeo. Matt s sister is stillin the rodeo to this day but Matt went straight. Sort of. He went to law school via a stint writing about the movies for a College Station paper, then ditched a law career to tend bar at Salon in the French Quarter. His next move is to direct movies. To continue the sibling theme of this show, Jaclyn Smith no relation to but inspired by the Charlie s Angel and her "Identical Mirror Twin" sister Nicole both started careers with The Hard Rock Cafe in Mississippi. 9 yeras later, Jaclyn is Operations Manager at the Hard Rock on Bourbon Street while Nicole is zooming around the country in corporate. sure Nicole is further up the food chain but she s not married to a hot chef at Sylvain. Andrew Duhon has been thinking a lot this week about women. Well, one anyway. Namely the subject of his newest song who he s conflicted about. But the heartache and getting "tired of f ing around" has paid off with a new song that takes Andrwto a brave new level of musicality. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon.
