Bryan Mack is a second-generation railroad worker from Florence, South Carolina, with a Masters in Music Performance. Both Bryan and his father worked for CSX Transportation, each hiring out at times when there were statistically few Black employees or employees of color working on the railroads. For 17 years, Bryan has worked as a conductor for CSX; in that time, he has seen and experienced firsthand the worsening conditions as the industry has been taken over by greedy executives and upper-level managers hellbent on cutting costs and maximizing profits for their shareholders at the expense of workers, customers, and the public at large. As part of our continuing coverage of the crisis on the nation's railroad system, we talk with Bryan about his life and work on the railroads, and about the good, bad, and ugly parts of the industry that outsiders may not see, including the discriminatory treatment that Bryan and other workers of color have faced on the job—up to CSX's recent decision to fire him under dubious circumstances. Today on the show I got to sit down with my college euphonium teacher, Professor Michael Salzman. As a recently retired music coordinator of the Syosset School District, Professor Salzman was responsible for overseeing and coordinating the work of other music teachers. He shed some light on how to facilitate your staff in order to support and nurture vs. correct and reprimand. We also discussed the nuances of going from a colleague to a boss. We then spoke about some of the challenges he's faced working with college music education and performance majors. Salzman values the importance of being a great performer because whether it's on stage as a tuba player or in front of a classroom with students, "you'll be performing everyday"! This can be tricky because often times there is so much turmoil in college students life such as homesickness, depression or anxiety. Professor Salzman went on to talk about the influence of his past teachers and credits them with shaping his own career and teaching style. He made some great analogies! So much so that I had to ask him if making great analogies was something he picked up from his past teachers. Michael Salzman has served on the music faculty of Hofstra University since 1993. At Hofstra he teaches tuba and euphonium, directs the Brass Ensemble and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, and teaches in the Music Education Program. For 33 years he has taught music at every grade level from Pre-K through college and has recently retired as the Coordinator of Performing Arts for Syosset Schools. Passionate about the benefits of music education in the lives of children, Salzman has been active in professional associations throughout his career. Please enjoy this wide ranging conversation I got to have with Brittany Newell and music and all it's many wonders!(And my apologies for the low sound quality at times from my microphone, technology is a real bear!)Brittany Newell was the Director of Orchestras at Edmonds-Woodway High School from 2018-2022, previous to that she spent six years at Ballard High School in Seattle, where she enjoyed working with students and families as the orchestra program grew from one class to a program including over eighty string students in two curricular orchestras and an extra-curricular Fiddle Ensemble. In 2016, Ms. Newell was named Ballard High School's Outstanding Educator. Ms. Newell earned a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor in Mathematics from the University of Washington and she completed a Masters in Music Performance at Western Washington University in 2018. She has enjoyed performing with various local ensembles including the NW Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Collaborative Orchestra, Cascade Symphony and within the Seattle old-time music community.
In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance. She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes. At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. David Juncos is a clinical psychologist, author and performance coach who specialises in music performance anxiety. His treatment approach includes the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and he has presented his research on this subject on an international scale. He is a faculty member at the Voice Study Centre and his book, Act for Musicians: A Guide for Using Acceptance and Commitment Training to Enhance Performance, Overcome Performance Anxiety and Improve Well-being, is available for purchase now. KEY TAKEAWAYS David is a musician at heart and in his work as a psychologist naturally gravitated towards musicians – this led to his interest in the area of music performance anxiety (MPA). When you have social anxiety, you have a fear of doing things in front of others. When you combine that fear with other symptoms that are highly distressing, you have a disorder. The disorder is not just the presence of symptoms but the presence of symptoms plus distress over having symptoms. People with performance anxiety experience many different symptoms including: physiological arousal symptoms such as tachycardia and shortness of breath; cognitive symptoms, so what your mind is doing when anxious; and behavioural symptoms. Behavioural symptoms cover avoidant or anxious behaviours such as not making eye contact during a performance or positioning yourself further away from the audience. ACT is part of a wave of newer behavioural psychotherapies that have become popular in the last 20 or 30 years. ACT encourages people to learn to coexist with anxious thoughts rather than try to eliminate them. The aim is to create a neutral relationship with anxiety so that you're not in an adversarial tug-of-war role with yourself and your anxiety. BEST MOMENTS ‘There was a lack of good methodological rigour in how these psychotherapies were being studied in the lab' ‘What your mind is doing when anxious is worrying about making a mistake and worrying about the implications and making it' ‘Being female unfortunately makes you more likely to have MPA' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: actformusicians.com hptherapy.com http://www.hptherapy.com/OurPsychotherapists.en.html#DavidJ Social Media: Research Gate: researchgate.net/profile/David-Juncos-2 Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-juncos-psy-d-b688a53b/ Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Study Centre: voicestudycentre.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep 76. What we're talking about: In this week's episode my guest is Charlotte, and she is studying a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at The University of Melbourne. In this conversation, we discuss the various streams you can study within the Bachelor of Music and the subjects that Charlotte has completed, the opportunities within the course to get an understanding of what it's like to work in the performance industry, and the advice that Charlotte has received throughout the course to help her navigate a career where the work may be not be as consistent and stable compared to other industries. Bachelor of Music (Performance) at The University of Melbourne Charlotte explains that the Bachelor of Music has a range of specialisations including performance which is Charlotte's major. She explains that as well as her voice classes, she's also been able to study electives that include understanding the anatomy behind singing, and learning how to pronounce words correctly in different languages so that you can sing in those languages without needing to be fluent in them. Links to Industry Within the Course Throughout the course, Charlotte shares that she has heard from a range of professional performers to help get an understanding of what it's like to work in the industry. Most of her teachers have had their own successful career, and they each run different masterclasses to share their knowledge with students. The university also helps students stay up-to-date with audition opportunities and has created an environment where students are more likely to encourage and share with each other rather than compete for opportunities. Careers in Music Performance Throughout this episode, we talk a lot about the fact that careers in performance are seen as less stable than other careers, and what students and graduates can do to help create opportunities for themselves. This can include things like actively including a back up plan as part of your study, understanding how you can use your degree in other ways, being aware of the work that is available and creating your own art to put your work out there. This episode features Mike Dawson on dynamics, creative recording, getting gigs and more. It's the first ever rewind episode of the Unstarving Musician, based on episode one of the podcast. In rewind episodes I'm digging deep into past conversations to further mine insights. The hope is that I'll uncover insights that were perhaps lost in our collective note taking. This is of course intended to serve music professionals like you. Mike is the former managing editor at Modern Drummer Magazine. He is now Chief Creative Officer at Drum Factory Direct. He's also host of the Drum Candy podcast, described as the definitive podcast for gear-obsessed drummers. His education includes a Masters in Music Performance from University of the Arts Philadelphia, music studies at West Virginia University and many years of high school band. His education is a relevant part of our conversation, and I believe very relevant to who he is professionally. Mike has had a great career performing in the music business, in part thanks to his education. But don't be discouraged if you lack formal music education. Mike also says that among his peers, about half are self-taught. I am in fact self-taught and have always been able to play when, where and with whom I want. And that comes with the other part of being like Mike, the part that involves keeping relationships alive and working on your craft. Mike and I also discuss dynamics, something I learned thanks to the bit of formal education that I do have. Mike shares about the importance his education had on dynamics and why it matters. The skill of dynamics seems to be lost on lots of otherwise good musicians–drummers especially. All musicians benefit from developing good dynamics and by learning how to lead a band in dynamic changes. It's hard to find musicians who can play quietly and with a good sense of dynamics. So give yourself a leg-up by working on your dynamics and on leading other musicians dynamic changes. Mike also talks about his passion for anything that's authentic and emotional. He was working on a few different projects of varying styles when we spoke. These varied projects presented challenges that Mike really enjoyed at the time. I'm sure he still pursuing a wide variety of passion projects today. This speaks to the value of being a diverse musician and being open to trying new things for the sake of a challenge, and for the sake of personal growth in your art. Diversity and discipline have allowed Mike to work in a wide range professional gigs. Mike and I also cover his passion for recording and experimentation in the studio. He loves the art of recording. It's even become his morning meditation of exploration and creative practice. This practice allows him to create something new almost daily. Mike shares his recipe for nurturing and leveraging his creativity. One important aspect of Mike's mornings is that he looked at the limits of his schedule and made the decision to work in early morning creative time. It's Mike's way of starting the day in a creatively productive way. Other topics we discuss include his self-care routine, marketing, social media trolls and business tips. Clergy and performing artists have a lot in common. How is liturgy like a concert? A staff meeting like a band rehearsal? All leaders, and all Christians, can learn so much from artists, good art, and artistic discipline about God's world, God's work, and life in Christ. Today I'm joined by the Rev. Jonathan Jameson, also known as Jon Jameson of the indie rock band Delta Spirit. We talk about his own giftings in the arts and ministry and how they've been mutually illuminating. We talk about about discipleship on the concert circuit, the importance of geeking out and loving what you love, steps to discerning vocation, and how Björk accidentally ended up in a conversation about sin and grace with Arvo Pärt. Jonathan is associate rector at St. John's Episcopal Church Savannah, Ga. Until becoming a priest he was a full-time professional musician. Jonathan and his wife Amy, a fashion designer, recently moved from Montreal, and have two young children. Delta Spirit is the Americana-influenced indie band he's been part of for 17 years, along with four other musicians. They've toured with My Morning Jacket, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids, and The Shins. Turn up your Fender Frontman -- maybe even to 11. Get those headphones on tight. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Watch Björk with Arvo Pärt Visit Delta Spirit's website Give to the Living Church --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/living-church/support

Welcome to Roadcase!! We are so incredibly psyched to present the one and only Corey McCormick for this episode. Corey has been playing bass in Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real since 2010, and has also played with Chris Cornell, Koshi Inaba, Neil Young and Willie Nelson. With a career that has now spanned over two decades, Corey, who is also a father of two young boys, has literally done it all -- and is extremely grateful for the amazing experiences he has encountered in his life as a touring musician. His dedication is also extraordinary; Corey studied Music Performance at Long Beach State before embarking on his journey and continues to work extremely hard at his craft. Family life is also important to Corey -- while having spent years on the road, he is now also focused on the broader picture of what it all means. His side project, Organa, provides Corey with an outlet for his multi-varied musical interests, and this funk, rock and
