Ever since the election in November, Democrats across the country have been scrambling to figure out what went wrong, so they can rally and try to take back control of Congress in 2026. One candidate who has emerged, at least in terms of his impressive early fundraising numbers, is Commerce City's own Manny Rutinel, a fresh face even in the Colorado Capitol, where he has served only two sessions as a state representative. So, as Rutinel and the rest of the legislature return to Denver today for a special legislative session, he joins producer Paul Karolyi to talk about the state's budget priorities, possible tweaks to his controversial AI law, immigration, food trucks, veganism, and his campaign to win back Congressional District 8 from Republican Gabe Evans. Rutinel has reportedly raised $1.6 million for his campaign so far, as of the second quarter of this year. For more on Evans' and the other Democrats' fundraising, Axios Denver has the details. What do you think about Manny Rutinel's chances in CD8? Would you like to hear from the other candidates hoping to unseat Republican Gabe Evans? We want to hear from you! Think of your favorite book. Now think of your favorite food. Now match those two together - your favorite book and your favorite food - into some kind of experience. Maybe you've slipped into the world of the book and you're eating your favorite food with your favorite characters. Are you smiling yet? Today's "Plan my Lesson" episode is all about launching your first literary food truck festival. I recently got a note from a teacher who had listened to our episode during the pandemic about hosting an online literary food truck festival, but she really wanted to hear about how to run one in person. Challenge, accepted. Let's talk about a project that's a perfect add for summer reading books, book club units, choice reading finales, or even whole class novels. I've even heard from a professor who used the project for a Greek Chariot Festival to explore Greek myths (so cool!) and a teacher who used it for short stories (a great option if you're looking for a speed-version). The literary food truck festival is just plain and simply memorable literary analysis fun, and I've just spent a dozen or so hours completely updating and expanding this free resource for you (grab it below), so let's walk through how to use it this year! Grab the Free Curriculum for this Project: https://sparkcreativity.kartra.com/page/literaryfoodtrucks See Photos of this Project in Action in other Classrooms: https://nowsparkcreativity.com/2020/01/literary-food-truck-festivals-photo-tour.html
If having a strong family and raising kids who know how to serve others is important - or necessary - to you, my guest today will inspire, encourage, and challenge you to reach those goals! He prefers the word "invite" over "challenge," so I'm curious to hear what you think! :)I was beyond honored to sit down with Fr. Leo Patalinghug, "the cooking priest," to talk about family dinners, sharing responsibilities in the home, building memories around food, and how he's serving many communities at once with his new food truck project. You'll hear:Why being a priest and a chef are basically the same callingFr. Leo's strong thoughts about family dinners and a strict boundary he encourages parents to set about dinner conversationThe science behind the necessity of gathering together around foodWhat Fr. Leo says to adults who don't know how to cook and the impersonal tragedy of processed/delivered foodA priest's prescription for date nights to keep the marriage strong (and be a good example for the children)The Plating Grace and Grub food truck and how many communities and needs it serves (plus, YUM, I'm drooling over the menu!)Some pointed words about media consumption, how we digest the words we're told, and what we really need a revival of in AmericaFr. Leo's family experience with food saving relationshipsThere's a reason Fr. Leo is an internationally renowned speaker and a TV host—he's so great to listen to and has a LOT to say. Take notes!I'm also so jazzed that he is quoted in my upcoming book on picky eating, coming in fall 2026!Resources We Mention for Building Strong FamiliesFather Leo's book Saving the FamilyFamily dinner rituals to promote mental and physical healthThe importance of family dinners10 ways to make veggies more appealing to kidsMore about connected parenting with Jennifer KolariTo support Father Leo's food truck ministry, head over hereCheck out his podcast and booksFollow Father Leo on Instagram and FacebookThank you to today's sponsor, Happsy! On Thursday's show: Houston City Council has approved plans to spend some $315 million in federal recovery funds, including $100 million for home repairs and housing, marking a significant turnaround from Mayor John Whitmire's initial proposal and a major victory for housing advocates. We learn more about that and some other recent developments in city government, including money for more beds for the homeless in the East End and new solid waste trucks. Also this hour: Recent comments from President Trump suggest some hostility towards wind energy. We consider what that could mean for Texas. Then, we learn about the challenges of running a restaurant -- when that restaurant is on wheels. And Stacey Allen, the author of a new children's book about dance, called D is for Dance, explores how the rhythms of the African diaspora continue to shape Houston's creative scene.
We love food, and we love hot dogs! The owner of one of our favorite local food trucks stopped by to share his story and send an invite out to our listeners for an upcoming food truck event. We took it a step further and issued him a challenge! Check out our chat!
On Tuesday's show: Students at HISD campuses are headed back to school today, and among them are some kids you could call “pandemic babies.” We discuss the challenges faced by kids whose early childhoods were disrupted by the pandemic. Also this hour: We remember astronaut Jim Lovell, who passed away last week. We revisit a conversation from 2020 he had with producer Michael Hagerty to mark the mission's 50th anniversary. And we hear some thoughts on Lovell from the man who brought him to the big screen: actor Tom Hanks.Plus, we explore life in Houston through the eyes of different generations, from the perspectives of Gens X, Y, and Z.And successful food trucks often become restaurants. And sometimes restaurants simplify and become food trucks. What challenges come with these transitions? And, in a city known for its variety of restaurant choices, do food trucks have an edge in reaching new audiences?

Why can't you sell grandma's famous cookies without jumping through government hoops? What if the biggest thing holding back local food entrepreneurs isn't the competition… it's the red tape? In this episode, we dive into the absurdity of cottage food laws, the bureaucratic roadblocks facing small business owners, and why government “help” is often anything but helpful. Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "Unlock the secret to a healthier heart, increased energy levels, and transform your cardiovascular fitness like never before.": CardioMiracle.com/TBNS We're talking with writer and policy analyst Noah Gould, who breaks down his bombshell article from National Review about how Michigan's food entrepreneurs are getting choked out by outdated, confusing, and downright nonsensical regulations. Want to butter toast at an event? Better have a separate license. Want to scale past $25K in revenue? Hope you enjoy navigating six different regulatory agencies. This isn't just a Michigan problem – it's a national trend. The government claims it's keeping you “safe” with all these rules, but grocery stores don't even trust the bureaucrats. They demand third-party certifications anyway. So why does the state still get to decide which food is “worthy” of your plate? Brian and Noah don't stop at highlighting the problem – they expose the cronyism, the fear-based exceptions, and the outright hypocrisy in how regulations are enforced. And most importantly, they lay out how we can fight back: with smarter laws, voluntary standards, and a market that rewards real value – not political connections. Whether you're a food truck dreamer, a liberty-minded policy nerd, or just sick of overpriced junk food being your only option, this is the conversation you need to hear.
