Chris Carr is a multi-faceted conceptual artist who has many talents, and wears many hats. He co-founded Brooklyn Wildlife with Keith Lay www.facebook.com/brooklynwildlife and throws a huge summer festival every year, which attracts musicians and fans from all over the world. He also co-runs the Greenpoint Brooklyn arts space and zine, Gamba Forest and Gamba Zine. He is a photographer, an emcee, producer, musician and many other things that I could list, but the point is, he is an amazing, multifaceted creative force. He is a very important voice in Brooklyn, and I believe the world should here his voice too.

Episode date, April 6th, 2017: I went to GAMBA Forest, a multi-purpose space that serves as both a performance and art venue, located at 231 Norman Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It's run by Melissa Hunter-Gurney and Chris Carr, who are co-founders of the literary publication, GAMBAZine. They recently worked with literary nonprofit Nomadic Press to host a poetry and music showcase at GAMBA Forest, titled "Texts 2 Tascha." The event's name and the night's lineup was curated by poet Dallas Athent, to honor the birthday of her friend, the artist Natascha Young, who was visiting Brooklyn from her home in England -- where she oversees the Venus A Day project, in which she carves the ancient female form, known as "the venus", from one of a variety of materials over the course of a single day, as part of a larger series, which she then chronicles on Instagram. I recorded the event, which included the following performers: Joanna Valente reading four poems: -- The Ones You Left Behind Are Still With You -- The Night Is Dark And Full Of Terrors -- Son -- Your Only Son Is Dead Craig Kite reading two poems: -- Fuck, We're All Going To Die -- The Algorithm Hates Me Stephanie Valente reading three poems: --Lake -- It Happened To Me, I Kissed A Gravedigger -- Married To The Mob Chris Carr reading three poems. Melissa Hunter-Gurney reading one poem: -- We Still Wear Fucking Fur Dallas Athent reading four selections from her new book of poetry Theia Mania: -- Page 21. -- Page 27. -- Page 33. -- Pages 58 & 59. La Julietissima singing four songs: -- Cuando vuelva a tu lado (or, "When I Return to Your Side"). -- Angelitos Negros (or, "Black Angels"). -- Besame Mucho (or, "Kiss me a lot"). -- La Llorona (or, "The Weeping Woman"). In its latest podcast, Beyond the Margin introduces you to the exciting and eclectic world of GAMBA. GAMBA stands for Generating Authentic Momentary Boundless Art, and is the brainchild of founders Melissa Hunter Gurney and Christopher Carr. Melissa is a Brooklyn-based independent writer who dabbles in painting when the characters she creates in her novels and stories drive her to the brush. Her written work (which she describes as “fiction because there is no truth”) explores the multi-faceted aspects of being a woman and an artist in today’s world. Chris is the quintessential Brooklyn indie artist. He’s a photographer, an emcee, and the founder of Brooklyn Wildlife (an event planning/creative firm specializing in indie/alternative art and music). As a creative partnership Melissa and Chris founded GAMBA Magazine, GAMBA Z’s Artist Residency and GAMBA Forest (an art gallery and event space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn). In this podcast host Michael Shields makes a visit to the GAMBA Forest to learn more about Melissa and Chris’s art and inspirations, as well as the bountiful and diverse events held in the Greenpoint, Brooklyn art space. Michael, Melissa and Chris dive into the early days of GAMBA Magazine (including the charming story of how the founders met!), the challenges of combating norms in art and life, motivations and process in creating, Chris’s recent life-altering bike accident and much, much more. So come along and join us for another trip Beyond the Margin and into the heart of GAMBA.Subscribe to Across the Margin: The PodcastCheck out Across the Margin for further amazing stories & much, much more!
