Mike talks with director Lisa D'Apolito about her 2025 documentary Shari & Lamb Chop, an affectionate and revealing portrait of Shari Lewis, the groundbreaking performer, writer, and puppeteer behind the beloved sock puppet Lamb Chop. Tess Hills is an amazing performer - both street performance/immersive theatre and puppeteer. I had the sheer honor of working with Tess on Brainland as puppeteers. She is the kind of person that elevates the whole quality of the project. Tess is fun to be on set with (we kept trying to hide stage clips on each other when the other one wasn't paying attention) and she also brings professional guidance to the project. I learned SO MUCH just by being around her. It was incredible. Tess owns and runs a company called Curious Cargo which has some fun shows for festivals and live events. They have a sketh/show called The Temperance Society described as, "Then never fear, the Victorians are here to help you mend your ways. They're frightfully proper, sombre and stern, with a terribly stiff upper lip." Truly an incredible performer. And one of those incredibly talented people who is also so so so humble. Her backbone is in play and always connecting. I loved doing this interview. Hope you enjoy it!

For this episode, Danny is privileged to be joined by actor, puppeteer, co-founder of the London School of Puppetry and president of the British Puppet Guild - Ronnie Le Drew. Ronnie has worked in theatre, television and film for many decades. His movie credits include The Naked Runner with Frank Sinatra, Little Shop of Horrors, The Muppets Treasure Island, Labyrinth and the live-action Beauty and the Beast. To people in the know however, he is most famous for Zippy from Rainbow, which is indisputably the greatest TV show in history and Danny'll fight anyone who disagrees with that. If you want to gain an insight into why puppets engage adults as well as kids on a level that no other form of entertainment does and how this ancient performance art continues to evolve to appeal to new audiences, listen in. Some of the places Ronnie performs are sure to surprise you. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ronnie learned basic puppet skills playing with toy puppets. Ronnie was small and couldn´t sing or dance but wanted to work in theatre, so he decided to fulfill his dream through puppetry. When Ronnie performs with Muffin The Mule, he borrows his granddaughter´s puppet. In some countries you can study puppetry at degree level. Punch and Judy performances continue and are evolving. TV fed Ronnie´s career rather than ruined it. Ronnie was Tom Hanks's body double...not in the way you think. Ronnie is now very popular at Comic Con. Throughout the decades Rainbow has remained popular and as a result Ronnie has appeared with Zippy in some very unexpected ways e.g. Late-night university parties, which attracted large crowds of students. The rude episode of Rainbow was filmed in about 3 minutes. BEST MOMENTS "All 5 of the audience had crept out. They were bored out of their minds, but I was having a ball." "I got a phone call from Henson saying we would like to use me on Labyrinth." "I was Tom Hanks's body double." “We used to lark around – Bungle, Zippy, and George - in bed...very naughty." Shakespeare wrote his play Hamlet in the early 1600s and by the late 1600s, well after the death of William Shakespeare in 1616, playing troupes are taking plays including Shakespeare's Hamlet and other works by early modern playwrights, and turning them into performance adaptations using a new medium---specifically, they're using puppets. Puppetry, marionettes, and glove puppets perform miniature versions of their human like counterparts as a popular form of theater entertainment for the 17th century. Our guest this week, Tiffany Stern, recently gave a lecture at the University of Birmingham, outlining how the examination of these puppet performances and how exploring the puppets themselves, like one that survives from the 17th century puppet named Amleto, suspiciously similar to the name Hamlet, can not only shed light on stereotypes that carry over from Shakespeare's lifetime, but these puppets also influence how we understand what it means to be a storyteller. **SMASH** **BREAKS GLASS** Well folks, here we are with another emergency pod, reviewing another one of Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams films. This time we opted to forgo spinning the wheel to just go ahead and watch a film suggested to us by a friend over on the discord! (shout out to L_Troemel!) For the uninitiated, Handmade Puppet Dreams is a series of short films produced by Heather Henson and her puppet company Ibex Puppetry. Founded in 2004, Handmade puppet dreams has provided the means and exposure for smaller puppet artists to create some truly unique films straight out of their own imaginations. This week the boys will be watching a found object puppet piece based on a Japanese Shinto story called Amaterasu. This one is really special, with beautiful found objects telling a classic mythological story of feuding gods. We hope you enjoy the unique short film from Handmade Puppet Dreams! http://www.UnderThePuppet.com - On February 2, 2025, Under The Puppet along with past show guest Christine Papalexis, the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry and Bob Baker Marionette Theater held a live episode recording celebrating the puppeteers of Pee Wee's Playhouse. This event sold out in less than 10 minutes and is, as of this recording, the fastest sell out Bob Baker Marionette Theater has ever had. And how can it not be when you bring together Wayne White, Ric Heitzman, George McGrath, Alison Mork and Kevin Carlson who are responsible for bringing to life some of the most beloved television characters of all time. I'm incredibly happy to present the audio recording of that evening on this episode of Under The Puppet. We'd also like to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Lynne Stewart who played Ms. Yvonne on Pee Wee's Playhouse. This event was recorded before her passing on February 21, 2025 but as you'll hear, she meant a lot to those who worked on the show. We send out our thoughts to Lynne Stewart's family and to all who knew her and were lucky enough to work with her. She is, was and always will be the most beautiful women in puppet land. Love is in the air! This week on PMoN, the boys go back to the Muppet roots with the first Muppet Show pilot episode, The Muppets Valentine Show! For those counting this is ANOTHER pilot separate from the Sex and Violence pilot they discussed in episode 43. This silly holiday romp guest stars the incomparable Mia Farrow, and features some great moments from lesser known characters like Mildred Huxtetter, Crazy Harry ne Crazy Donald, and our big blue loveable friend Thog! Does this pre-kermit/piggy, fling between our favorite frog and the delightful Miss Mousey hold up? You'll just have to listen in to find out! Be warned, this episode does feature some explosive Muppet mating.Join the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro https://www.taetro.com/Send us a text
**SMASH** **BREAKS GLASS** Well folks, while we promised some puppet history on Chinese dancing dragon puppets, unfortunately, life got in the way. (Now that Ben has a baby, we expect that to happen A LOT.) Since we didn't have time to do proper research, and we want to make sure to do Chinese Puppetry justice, we decided to save puppet history for another time and create a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency pod. To that end we created a brand-new wheel: the Handmade Puppet Dreams wheel! For the uninitiated, Handmade Puppet Dreams is a series of short films produced by Heather Henson and her puppet company Ibex Puppetry. Founded in 2004, Handmade puppet dreams has provided the means and exposure for smaller puppet artists to create some truly unique films straight out of their own imaginations. From time-to-time Will and Ben will spin this wheel and pick a short film to watch and review when life gets a little too hectic and we need to condense our usual several hours of pod prep into about 20 minutes. This week the wheel has landed on a fun little film full of love and space called Cosmic Fling. We hope you enjoy the first short film from the Handmade Puppet Dreams Wheel! It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, it's time to SPIN THE MUPPET SHOW'S MAGICAL MONTHLY MUPPET SHOW OF THE MONTH! And this time it landed on (drum roll) STEVE MARTIN! Once again, the PMoN boys have quite differing opinions on this one! While the boys both appreciate the comedy genius that is the legendary Steve Martin, they have different ideas as to how effective his brand of comedy happens to be in this particular outing with The Muppets. Welcome back Ben, and welcome back to another installment of Puppet History! In this episode we attempt to answer that age old question: "What the heck even is a puppet anyways?!?" You'd think with a combined 10 years of formal puppet education and an over 30 years combined in the business, we'd have a pretty neat and straight forward answer for you, wouldn't you? Well rest assured folks, the classic cutthroat arguing over stupid semantics and meaningless details that you know and love from the Puppet Masters of None continue as we spend far too much time discussing something seemingly so simple. Get ready for puppet nerddom to the extreme! And if you completely disagree with us, great! Let us know in the discord and we'll continue the discussion there! Who goes there?! While Ben is away, Rob joins us again as we talk about the classic 82' suspense horror The Thing, directed by John Carpenter. This iconic movie shocked audiences with its grotesque and horrifying practical effects and puppetry. Can the puppet masters sit through the ickiest, freakiest, and most disturbing puppets yet? This week on Puppet Masters of None, things get a little mischievous! While Ben gets some much-deserved R and R, guest Puppet Master, Rob Cutler, returns to the show to guest host this week's episode on Gremlins 2 (1990). Join Will and Rob as they discuss this anarchic cult classic filled with surprise cameos, fourth wall breaks, stop motion, a looney tunes short, and some of the most beautifully hideous puppets we've seen to date. Let the record show that Ben and Will have said time and time again… “DON'T GET THE PUPPETS WET!”Send us a text
To celebrate the 55th birthday of "Sesame Street," I had a wonderfully inspiring chat with the legendary Noel MacNeal about his incredible decades-spanning career. From wrangling puppets on "Sesame Street" in 1982 to becoming "Bear in the Big Blue House" in 1997 to currently working as the resident puppeteer on "Last Week Tonight" Noel's rich, candid, & witty stories about everything from the tricks of the trade to how children on the spectrum & with special needs respond to puppet characters will warm your heart. Bio: Noel MacNeal launched his career performing on PBS's award-winning Sesame Street, where he honed his craft with puppetry legends Jim Henson and Frank Oz. He is a script and television directorial adviser and consultant for the international versions of Sesame Street, and has directed episodes of Sesame Street, Bear in the Big Blue House, and has won an Emmy Award for his direction on Sesame Street. Noel is currently the resident puppeteer for the HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. His puppet-making book 10-Minute Puppets with Noel MacNeal and the follow-up BOX are both with Workman Publishing. He's also written his autobiography “Hey, This Was Really Fun: Life Lessons from Sesame Street to The Big Blue House & Beyond” available on Amazon. Noel lives in Brooklyn with his wife, novelist Susan Elia MacNeal (of the award-winning Maggie Hope historical mystery series and Mother, Daughter, Traitor, Spy from Penguin Random House). 10 months on the waitlist, and well worth it! Casa Bonita is the definition of a dining "experience" with its hodgepodge collection of oddball acts and entertainment, but is it worth flying out of state to grab dinner? I break down this kitschy paradise with my guest, the hilarious Ify Nwadiwe (Dropout TV, Um Actually, Maximum Film) in this week's review episode! The Good: Cliff divers are tremendous fun, the puppet show is expertly entertaining, the magician is a pro, the merch is unrivaled, the food is way better than its reputation would have you believe, a Love Tester machine tells me I'm "burning" with passion, and much more! The Not Good: Manbearpigrilla's handler snubbed us out of a photo op, there's too much to do in one visit, the service pace is overwhelmingly fast, a food assembly line, and there's a lack of clarity on the best way to experience the show The Just There: Rice & beans were whatever What We Ate: Horchata, the Wooly Bully, Chips & Salsa, Mole, Carnitas, Rice, Beans, Enchiladas, & Sopaipillas Ify details his worst & best restaurant experiences in The Calibration Station The second highest score in the history of the podcast!
