Dr. Jan Yager is a sociologist, freelance writer, coach, speaker, artist, and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Jan has a Ph.D. from The City University of New York Graduate Center and an M.A. in criminal justice from Goddard College. "He made love to me, smooth as a colon, and when he went down on me my body waved like a tilde." Secrecy is an aphrodisiac. As powerful as pursuit, it is often mistaken for ardour. It is by and of itself an indulgence. Its translation into a stronger emotion, into love, is a different genre of effort. Chekhov once memorably said “There's a proper order for a woman to become a man's friend. First she's an acquaintance, then she's a lover, and finally she becomes a good friend.” Love then is a long distance run, and friendship a journey of a lifetime. Far beyond the satisfaction of an ego to ‘get' someone, is recognition and acceptance. Of giving the time to know someone so thoroughly that the things we fall in love with mesh seamlessly with what we don't. Irritations become quirks become things we adore. Time spent together is finding meaning in life. And hiatuses are then filled with remembrance which then act as bridges. Till the next time. My best friends never complain about not being in touch. If they do, they are still lovers and have not transcended to friendship, which in the holy trinity of relationships, is the highest form of coexistence. (☺️) As I walk through the hundreds of relationships I have formed - online, physical, tangential, official, family - I have continually learnt how it is often our closest relations who suck the marrow out of the marginal happiness we exist within. And sometimes it is mere strangers who elevate us with their attention or life stories. I survive by being in a zen state. As a Buddhist sutra succinctly advises - “Sab anitya hai”. Everything passes. Indeed. Whenever I see couples getting hitched, I say a silent prayer of thankfulness. Because every day the couple has a ringside view of each other, of things which they say and do. They crack a small joke, they fulfil small wishes, they stop someone from stumbling, they secretly make someone's favourite dish,they listen with their bodies, they stand beside the window and see the morning sun drop on the floor. We all need someone in our lives who can see us for what we are, way beyond what the world sees us, as someone made of greatness and grime, someone who is beautiful and ugly at the same time. Someone who sees us as selfish and doesn't turn away, someone who recognises the smallest gesture as generosity and embraces us for that. To be ready to be a couple is to be with each other, through the massive and the minute, to know we can be huge in tumult and small in celebration, and still not turn away, because we have promised to take each other as we are. To know that we have the capability to accept way beyond what we can dream of. Because we are privileged to be the witnesses of the lives our lovers lead. I'm excited that the pandemic--for all its negativity--also said, “Hey, wait a minute. We need to concentrate on food resiliency”. We need to encourage these small diverse farms because the big operations, the five huge companies that sell 99 % of the meat in this country, failed us. For what reason? The structure, this food system structure failed us. John Roberts was appointed by the Biden Administration to serve as the State Executive Director of the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Vermont in February 2022. Roberts immigrated to Vermont from Great Britain in 1974 after earning his Bachelor of Science degree in farm management. He managed Shelburne Farms in Vermont until 1977 and then started his own dairy farm in Cornwall, Vermont, which was managed by his family until 2012. Roberts worked for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture as a water quality specialist for over six years and as the Executive Director of the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition, which he joined in 2020. He continues to serve as a select board member for the town of Cornwall and was a delegate to the New England Dairy Promotion Board. Roberts also served terms on the Vermont Water Resources Board, Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, Board of the Vermont Land Trust, Vermont Brown Swiss Association, and as Chair of the Vermont USDA FSA State Committee. Roberts also served in several state and national committee positions for the National Beef Promotion Board and the Grazing Land Conservation Initiative. Roberts' wife is a nurse and they have been married for 47 years. They have four children, all married, residing in various states across the country, with four grandchildren and another on the way. I had a conversation recently with a great friend of mine who's been on somewhere approaching 3 million different boards. He's really not sold on my whole vibe when it comes to corporate governance, which is fair and totally fine. He explained a key part of his resistance like this: “Matt, when you're in a board meeting all you're thinking about is that Bob's flight leaves at 6:45 and we have 13 complex agenda items to go, so how are we gonna just get through all of this?” Sure, we're back to the whole urgency thing again, and it's super obvious that what my friend described is basically the opposite of effective conditions for making decisions. And this isn't a knock on him at all. Despite the fact that he's unconvinced by me, he's the real deal and then some. And I think he hit on something *hugely* important here. This hypothetical Bob character is a real person with a real life. I know it's sappy, but the first thing that came to mind thinking about Bob was that he just really misses his spouse or family and that the board totally has his back. “Bob's been on the road for two weeks. Let's make sure he gets home on time to take his boo out for a fancy romantic dinner tonight!” And you know what? I'm completely supportive of directors looking out for each other like that. Understanding your peers as full human beings, and being empathetic toward the complexities of their lives and feelings. Hoo boy, that's the stuff of board legend. But if every board meeting has the life crushed out of it because we're cramming through all our important decisions just so Bob can fly to Topeka for his next board meeting. That ain't it, bro. One of my all-time favorite leadership books – certainly the one with the most sticky tabs in it – is Reldan Nadler's “Leading with Emotional Intelligence.” I've used this resource for other episodes of the podcast, and today I want to talk about tools for building your self-confidence – specifically, Being on Your Side rather than Being on Your Case. Or, as I like to call it, having your own back. When you are on your case, you are hard on yourself. This often comes from a belief that the only way to get better is to push yourself to do better and better. What you may not realize is that your calculus for evaluating success or failure is probably at fault. It's not what you did or didn't do, but rather what you think about what you did or didn't do. When you are never satisfied with your performance, your self-confidence is naturally negatively impacted. You are often stressed and unhappy. As a coach, I understand that all the other relationships you have in your life are natural outcroppings of how you treat yourself. If you are being highly critical, judgmental, picky, negative, and never satisfied – you will view others in the same way. So while we're specifically talking about your relationship with yourself in this episode, understand the consequences of that relationship to all the other relationships in your life. If you lead people, you will likely treat them as you treat yourself. Here's what I know to be true: You can't hate yourself into becoming a better performer at work…a better leader…a more promotable person. When you can be on Your Side, you develop a more accurate calibration by which to measure yourself. Instead of using On Your Case language with yourself, you can begin practicing more On Your Side language.Here are some examples of On Your Case language: -How could I be so lame? -Don't I know better than this? -I'm an idiot for doing this! -Why didn't I start this sooner? -I could have done a much better job! -What is wrong with me? -I should have known better! Here are some examples of On Your Side language: -Which parts of this went well? -What didn't turn out the way I wanted it to? -What exactly didn't work out here? -Which part is under my influence? -Is there anything I could have done differently? -What can I learn from this performance? -What do I want to improve next time? -Is there any learning, training, or help I need to improve my performance? On Your Case language is demanding, damaging, and irrational, and over-generalized, leaving you feeling dissatisfied, less confident, and overwhelmed. On Your Side language is respectful, constructive, rational, and realistic, leaving you feeling encouraged and energized – and with an action plan for the future. Here are some questions to ask yourself: -How accurate is my evaluation system? -On a scale of 1-100, what percentage of the time am I on my case? -How do I feel after I've been on my case? -What are the consequences for me and others for being on my case? -Do I treat others as harshly as I do myself? -Is this an effective pattern for me to continue with? -If I don't change this, what do I stand to lose or miss out on? The first step in this process has to be awareness – telling yourself the truth about how often you are On Your Case vs. On Your Side. Noticing when you are On Your Case going forward vs. On Your Side. Change always must begin with an honest assessment of where we currently are. NOTE: Once you begin being more aware of how often you are On Your Case, the tendency is to beat yourself up even more. You are already beating yourself up by being On Your Case, but now you are also beating yourself up for beating yourself up. “I'm such an idiot for being on my case so much.” Rather, I invite you to begin slowly redirecting your brain, which has been thoroughly trained to Be On Your Case, to begin being On Your Side. Be kind to yourself, patient with yourself, and show grace and mercy. Don't expect a 180 degree change overnight. Celebrate the small victories – which is also a great way to be On Your Side!
