In the 914th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway and Mike Holtz are joined by Hayley Hanna (AKA Vegas Hayls), who is fresh off finishing fourth in the 2025 Arizona State Poker Championship. The trio discusses the sudden rise of Monarch, who is Finnish poker pro Ossi Ketola. While at the Onyx Cup in Cyprus, he challenged both Norway's Kayhan Mokri and Dan "Jungleman" Cates to high-stakes heads-up matches, and when all was said and done, Monarch was down eight figures! From there, they talk about recent tournament winners, including Brandon Mitchell taking down the 2025 Arizona State Poker Championship for $525K, Jennifer Shahade winning the Women's Summer Festival, and both Jesse Lonis and Jeremy Ausmus winning over in Europe. Other stories covered include the loss of Poker Hall of Famer Jack McClelland, a poker player robbed in Texas, Daniel Negreanu saying a Season 2 for Game of Gold is unlikely, and that goofball Nacho Barbero finishing another sponsorship opportunity. Finally, remember PokerNews is giving away a seat in the World Tournament of Slots (WTOS). You could have an approximate one in 500 chance at a $1,000,000 top prize. Some hot weather and a spur of the moment decision turned into an excellent 24 hours of father-and-sons fly fishing time. In this episode, I talk about the great time that my boys and I had in Manchester, Vermont. The occasion was the American Museum of Fly Fishing's Summer Festival. There were vendors, exhibits, and competitions. (And there was food.) Needless to say, a good time was had by all. This is the kind of event that isn't fly fishing... but it is a quintessential to fly fishing culture. Hear about our time and make plans to attend something similar near you. The sun is out and it will be time for the residents of Stroud House to enjoy the weather for their summer festival. It will be a day for families to come together with their loved ones to enjoy wonderful memories through music. It will also showcase their beautiful garden. The hard work for three volunteers paid off at Stroud House this year. The red, white and blue theme produced a stunning flower bed for the residents to enjoy. Like music, the bright colours of flowers helps to those suffering with dementia to sit and look out onto the garden and reminisce about gardens of their own. Manager of Stroud House, Sam Oliver, thanked Pauline Punt, Sid Fordham and Gordon Vidler who put so much hard work into the garden.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The 55th annual summer music festival by Chamber Music Northwest is now underway. This year’s theme is Echoes of Bach, featuring the composer's work and dozens of other masterpieces from other eras that resonate with it. For decades, the nonprofit was led by the renowned clarinetist David Shifrin. In 2020, pianist Gloria Chien and her husband, violinist Soovin Kim, were named as artistic directors. We first talked with them in 2021, the year they received the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Award for Extraordinary Service for their work during the pandemic. We talk with the duo about their time at the helm and how the organization has grown since then -- and what makes Chamber Music Northwest’s summer festival an annual draw for some of the most talented musicians from around the world.
This week, we discuss the potency of urbanism's gateway drug: summer festivals. Culturally, Americans love to frequent farmer's markets, watch fireworks, and attend live arts shows in the park. We often don't realize that these are all functions of a walkable environment (even if often temporary). Vendor tents are proxies for small shops, food trucks could be permanent neighborhood eateries, and running into friends could be a norm rather than a novelty.Instead of closing a parking lot or street for one night only, what if we planned our cities to facilitate and prioritize community all year long? Also: On nostalgia, Pokémon Go, and the Oregon Shakesphere Festival.Timeline:00:00 Aly's back.01:06 Summer festivities and temporary walkability.02:05 Nostalgia and summertime memories.02:47 Pokemon Go and gamified outdoor activities.07:49 Urbanism and community events.12:18 Navigating festivals and parking challenges.22:45 Festival fatigue and urban living.27:07 Our upcoming trip to Ashland, Oregon.30:03 Wrapping up.
