There is something deeply witchy about leaving your normal home, your normal bed, your normal coffee mug, and stepping into a place where the land does not already know your name.In this episode of Back on the Broomstick, Laylla and Chelle are packing up the magical bug spray and heading into the wilds to talk about witchcraft while camping, traveling, and wandering off to summer festivals. Whether you're sleeping under the stars, staying in a cabin, road-tripping to a sacred site, or setting up your tent at Brushwood, Dragonfest, Starwood, Mystic South, or Pagan Pride, travel has a way of pulling us out of our everyday patterns and into threshold space. The witches talk about how to set up camp respectfully, create temporary sacred space, connect with the quarters in a new landscape, and build a mini altar that won't take over your entire backpack. They explore offerings for the land, listening to local spirits, working with tree, stone, and place energy, and why “leave no trace” might be one of the most magical rules a witch can follow. They also wander into the idea of land guardians, festival grounds that hold years of ritual memory, and how to form a temporary connection with a place without trying to claim it, tame it, or accidentally bring home every bit of spiritual static clinging to your hiking boots. From gratitude rituals before leaving a campsite to practical witchy packing tips, this episode is all about staying enchanted on the road without making things complicated. Sometimes the most powerful altar is a picnic table, a lantern, a cup of camp coffee, and a quiet thank you whispered to the trees.Starwood Sankofa FestivalSirius Rising FestivalGot a question?

At home, he reviews unique parrot products and shares how he cares for his African Greys every day on his YouTube channel @Africangreyjournal and Instagram page @theafricangreyjournal.Our hosts Alexis and Avery dig into how Mark got involved with aviculture, his journey becoming an established parrot influencer, and day-to-day life with his own two African Grey Parrots Maxwell and Gabrielle (AKA Gabby). If you attended the last Summer Festival at Parrot Stars, you most likely met Mark! He was out in the crowds with his camera documenting the event and discussing bird care with the community. Suffice it to say, he was a huge hit with everyone and his video was wildly successful. Our hosts discuss Mark's content online, what draws people to it, and what his plans for the future involve - including a potential aviculture-oriented documentary.Additionally for the past year Mark has been developing The Avian Exchange “A Platform for Parrot Keepers, By Parrot Keepers” - a bird marketplace and networking site for aviculturists and legitimate, qualified bird breeders to share their care techniques as well as their birds available for purchase. Every user - aviculturist and breeder is manually verified by Mark, so you can rest assured that anyone involved has been properly vetted.Join us for a conversation about bird keeping, bird care, and insights from members of the avian community for the community at large.

Some hot weather and a spur of the moment decision turned into an excellent 24 hours of father-and-sons fly fishing time. In this episode, I talk about the great time that my boys and I had in Manchester, Vermont. The occasion was the American Museum of Fly Fishing's Summer Festival. There were vendors, exhibits, and competitions. (And there was food.) Needless to say, a good time was had by all. This is the kind of event that isn't fly fishing... but it is a quintessential to fly fishing culture.  Hear about our time and make plans to attend something similar near you. The 55th annual summer music festival by Chamber Music Northwest is now underway. This year’s theme is Echoes of Bach, featuring the composer's work and dozens of other masterpieces from other eras that resonate with it. For decades, the nonprofit was led by the renowned clarinetist David Shifrin. In 2020, pianist Gloria Chien and her husband, violinist Soovin Kim, were named as artistic directors. We first talked with them in 2021, the year they received the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Award for Extraordinary Service for their work during the pandemic. We talk with the duo about their time at the helm and how the organization has grown since then -- and what makes Chamber Music Northwest’s summer festival an annual draw for some of the most talented musicians from around the world.

This week, we discuss the potency of urbanism's gateway drug: summer festivals. Culturally, Americans love to frequent farmer's markets, watch fireworks, and attend live arts shows in the park. We often don't realize that these are all functions of a walkable environment (even if often temporary). Vendor tents are proxies for small shops, food trucks could be permanent neighborhood eateries, and running into friends could be a norm rather than a novelty.Instead of closing a parking lot or street for one night only, what if we planned our cities to facilitate and prioritize community all year long? Also: On nostalgia, Pokémon Go, and the Oregon Shakesphere Festival.Timeline:00:00 Aly's back.01:06 Summer festivities and temporary walkability.02:05 Nostalgia and summertime memories.02:47 Pokemon Go and gamified outdoor activities.07:49 Urbanism and community events.12:18 Navigating festivals and parking challenges.22:45 Festival fatigue and urban living.27:07 Our upcoming trip to Ashland, Oregon.30:03 Wrapping up.

With shows ranging from rom-com and risqué to Saratoga's only summer musical and a classical opera in French, Opera Saratoga's 2025 Summer Festival presents many things including the glam of Paris, the exotic mystique of Budapest, and the wit of Ireland. The diverse offering of shows—most of which take place at Universal Preservation Hall—will be performed by both prominent and up-and-coming artists. Through Opera Saratoga's Festival Artists program selects a small number of America's most prestigious emerging artists each year to participate (this year, of the 900 applicants, only 16 were selected).
