A yoga teacher turned self-proclaimed messiah built a secretive cult in Australia—stealing children, dosing them with LSD, and preparing them for a doomsday that never came.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateABOUT WEIRD DARKNESS: Weird Darkness is a true crime and paranormal podcast narrated by professional award-winning voice actor, Darren Marlar. Seven days per week, Weird Darkness focuses on all thing strange and macabre such as haunted locations, unsolved mysteries, true ghost stories, supernatural manifestations, urban legends, unsolved or cold case murders, conspiracy theories, and more. Parental discretion is strongly advised.IN THIS EPISODE: The Hamilton-Byrne family was anything but typical, rather it was a doomsday cult with a leader who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. (Inside the Family Cult) *** On this date, October 24, 1953, Evelyn Hartley, a 15-year-old sophomore from La Crosse, Wisconsin, vanished without a trace while on her way to a babysitting job. It was like something out of a Halloween urban legend but in this case, the horror was real. (The Babysitter Who Vanished) *** The odd happening that takes place here and there in a house more than likely can be explained in some rational way. Even quite a few strange occurrences could probably be explained by science. But when the events seem to never stop, perhaps it's time to think something else is going on. (An Assortment of Experiences) *** Legend tells a centuries-old curse was placed upon Dudleytown in Connecticut. The town turned into a horrible place where people committed suicide or went insane. (Cursed Dudleytown) *** Exactly 92 years ago today – October 24, 1926 - something went wrong during a performance by Harry Houdini. A week later, he would be dead. (Houdini's Final Performance) *** In the Oakland Cemetery, a bronze monument to tragedy is said to bring death to anyone who touches it. (Black Angel of Death) *** While camping, a man has dreams of a dark-haired woman several nights in a row. Normally it wouldn't be anything to be all that concerned about, but it's something to fear if you are near the French Broad river. (Siren of the French Broad) *** Alien visitors, beings from a different dimension, our planet even had tree monsters and sentient pyramids showing up – and all in the year 1965. (The Inter-Dimensional Interlopers of 1965) *** A retired naval officer reports rocks falling through his home's roof – dozens in a single day – with no explanation of where they came from. (Cappy Ricks and the Stones) *** In 1994 a man has a paranormal experience with a popular song recorded two decades earlier. (The Joker) *** Is there a clandestine space program designed to save the elite from a global catastrophe?

Perhaps this goes without saying -- most things do -- but this program stands in John Starks Contrast to all things "Yacht Rock", or back as it was known in a more sensible era, motherfucking "soft rock". Suffice to say many of the persons involved in extolling the virtues of these musical atrocities have been hit in the head with far too many soft rocks. I've been informed that a recent social media disagreement over this issue was not merely debated with some random schmoe with terrible taste, but in fact, THE GODFATHER OF SOFT ROCK. Short of a Black Angels marathon (don't give them any ideas, they've done fine without any to date) I can think of no form of torture more extreme than a PODCAST that tackles issues like if "if Seals and Crofts were both drowning and you could only save one, who would it be?" and "why weren't Pablo Cruise on the 'Cruising' soundtrack?" except for perhaps a feature length documentary that grapples with the same.

as we approach yet another edition of Austin's Levitation Festival --- each year answering the question "what if Altamont was held at multiple locations that weren't within walking distance?" --- i am somewhat sorry to say that I''ve been unable to properly prep a program that examines Levitation's most important aspect (ie. what everyone is wearing) because i know we're in the home stretch of the most important general election of our lifetimes.  While the rest of you are having a grand old time watching the Black Angels, I'll be at the back of the venue, handing out bumper stickers at the City Witches For Jill Stein booth. It's not that I'm actually supporting Jill Stein, but it turns out these bumper stickers can double as kinesio tape and we all know that shit's expensive.  Just my little part to help the economy, no need to thank me, having poor sightlines for the Black Angels is reward enough.

The show leads off with my favorite new release of the week—Sun Blood Stories' “Brand New Ghost Town”—and then features new or recent tracks from bands including Black Angel, Clubdrugs, The Bleak Assembly, Pink Panther Project, Brittany Bindrim, Endanger, Die Sexual, The Russian White, Izzy Reign, Donzaii, and Urban Heat (whose album, The Tower, is one of the best of the year!) In the pre-antibiotic era, tuberculosis was one of the biggest killers humanity ever faced. The specter of the ‘great white plague' hung over towns and cities across the world, cities like New York whose population boom in the early 20th century paved the way for this deadly disease to spread throughout crowded tenements. As tuberculosis rates in NYC reached a breaking point, city officials sought to solve the problem by establishing a sanatorium on Staten Island. But they quickly ran into an issue - who would be willing to work there, exposing themselves to this untreatable deadly disease? In The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis, author Maria Smilios tells the story of the courageous nurses who worked at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island, facing the constant threat of disease and perpetual racism from patients, colleagues, and neighbors. Smilios brings these women's stories to life, describing how they persevered in these difficult conditions to ultimately help bring about the cure for tuberculosis, for which they have only recently been recognized. Tune in for a fascinating discussion about a monumental time in tuberculosis history! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"Reverb & Seduction" The Portland outfit Federale have been one of the most fascinating and inventive bands of the last twenty years. Led by Collin Hegna, Federale have put out a handful of albums whose affecting instrumental cinemascapes, dark country ballads and psych rock excursions bring to mind a version of and the Dirty Three had they hailed from the verdant and moody Pacific Northwest. The band's new album and sixth overall, Reverb & Seduction is an ambitious and wicked blend of dusty pedal steel, high desert reverb and ominous strings that all add up to a deliciously dark and foreboding feeling that something's going to happen and not only is not going to be good, there's nothing you can do to stop it. With a lineup that boasts members of The Shivas, Roselit Bone, Dandy Warhols, and Rogue Wave, plus a guest appearance by Alex Maas of The Black Angels, Reverb & Seduction is one of the year's very best. As for Hegna, he's a busy fellow--not only does he front Federale, he's been in the Brian Jonestown Massacre for the past two decades, which also makes him the longest serving member of that band, he's a recording engineer and owner of Revolver Studios in Portland where he's produced records by everyone from Roselit Bone to David J. www.collinghegna.com www.federalemusic.bandcamp.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradiocom) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG; @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

IN THIS EPISODE: The Hamilton-Byrne family was anything but typical, rather it was a doomsday cult with a leader who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. IN THIS EPISODE: If there's one thing on Earth that we can all agree is most likely to be haunted, it's a graveyard. Since the advent of civilization we've gathered our dead and placed them in burial plots together. And it's no surprise that people talk of the spirits that linger, not far from the final resting place of their bodies, perhaps clinging to life or serving as a grim omen for what's to come when we all meet our end. Some of these cemeteries, however, boast more ghost stories than others.YOUTUBE CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS…00:00:00.000 = Title Story Preview and Show Open00:05:01.866 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “The Old Ones Are Hard To Kill” (January 06, 1974)00:52:06.611 = Weird Darkness, “Resurrection Mary – Chicago's Most Famous Ghost”01:00:37.213 = I Love a Mystery, “Case of the Roxy Mob” (January 18, 1939)01:16:08.685 = Weird Darkness, “Bachelor's Grove Cemetery”01:22:35.237 = The Shadow, “The Three Ghosts” (October 31, 1937)01:54:46.740 = Weird Darkness, “The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery”01:59:38.249 = Weird Darkness, “Hellmouth of Stull Cemetery”02:05:21.623 = Weird Darkness, “Moving Coffins of the Chase Family”02:11:40.802 = Sherlock Holmes, “The Empty House” (October 05, 1932)02:27:34.745 = Weird Darkness, “Most Haunted Graveyards Ever, Part 1”02:41:05.866 = Sleep No More, “Conquerors Isle” (November 21, 1956)03:10:54.364 = Weird Darkness, “Most Haunted Graveyards Ever, Part 2”03:31:19.125 = Sounds of Darkness, “The Neiman Principle” (July 14, 1967)03:58:08.682 = Show CloseSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Resurrection Mary – Chicago's Most Famous Ghost” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/31DKcr4“Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OTIPTo“Moving Coffins of the Chase Family” by Elisabeth Tilstra: http://bit.ly/2yVrHlv“Hellmouth of Stull Cemetery” posted at The Line Up: http://bit.ly/2yT1dBc“Colonial Park Cemetery” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/31yX4yw“Bachelor's Grove” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2Z0yhG2“The Dead of Hart Island” by Steven Casale: http://bit.ly/2H77spp“The Mausoleum of Mary Reed” by Jessica Ferri: http://bit.ly/302mrby“The Grave of the Female Stranger” by Orrin Grey: http://bit.ly/2OViAfA“Forgotten Graveyards” by Deanna Janes: http://bit.ly/300Duej“The Most Haunted Graveyards Ever” sources: Occult Museum: http://bit.ly/304kX0A, Kimberly Powell: http://bit.ly/2Z0gkmN, Stacy Conradt: http://bit.ly/2YKCIpe, David Ian McKendry: http://bit.ly/2KvMz9nWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In the first of a new series we're calling Lost Women of Science Conversations—and a fitting choice for Black History Month—we talk to Maria Smilios, author of a new book that tells the story of Black nurses who were lured from the Jim Crow South to work at a tuberculosis (TB) hospital called Sea View on Staten Island, N.Y. Facing unsanitary conditions and racial prejudice, these “Black Angels” cared for TB patients for decades before a cure that they helped develop was found. It's a story of bravery and dedication that Smilios pieced together from oral histories and medical records because there were no archives that described these nurses' work.

In the past year, the "Black Angels" of Sea View Hospital on Staten Island have been recognized for their contributions as nurses involved in developing a groundbreaking treatment for tuberculosis. A new exhibition at The Staten Island Museum, Taking Care: The Black Angels of Sea View Hospital, just opened, and features objects the nurses used in their work, as well as more information about the harsh conditions in which they had to operate. For the first day of Black History Month, we're joined by the show's curators Rylee Eterginoso and Gabriella Leone, and Virginia Allen, one of the last surviving Black Angels.

SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING.Dan has a mysterious disappearance and an urban legend that some think is a lot more than just a legend. His first tale focuses on the strange circumstances surrounding the disappearance of a young man in Colorado back in 2008. The second story will bring us to a cemetery in Iowa where an angelic statue has gained a reputation for not being very…. angelic. Is the Black Angel of Iowa City, Iowa's Oakland Cemetery cursed? Lynze has two great stories this week as well! She will kick it off with a bizarre and hard-to-explain story about a hot tub and a cell phone- we will leave it at that. And her second story is a banger with haunted house vibes, doppelgangers, and a jinn!  Patreon Monthly Donation: In November, we always choose a Veteran/Military non-profit in honor of Veteran's Day. This year, we have decided to donate to The Blue Skies Foundation. The Brotallion Blue Skies Foundation is a veteran-founded non-profit dedicated to providing post-mishap support for the Army Aviation community and their families. They consider themselves fortunate to be part of a close-knit community and thus see their responsibility to give back and support the families of those who have lost loved ones. They hope to honor the legacies of those who have fallen and support their families through the work of the Brotallion Blue Skies Foundation. We will send them $12,884 this month and add $1430 to the scholarship fund for distribution next year.
