Award-winning journalist John Beck joins Chris to discuss Those Who Should Be Seized Should Be Seized, his harrowing account of China's campaign against Uyghurs, ethnic Kazakhs, and other Muslim minorities. Beck traces the lives of four people—from re-education camps in Xinjiang to exile in Turkey, Kazakhstan, and the US—revealing how Beijing's reach extends far beyond its borders through intimidation, surveillance, and coercion. They explore mass detention, forced labor, and the destruction of culture; the weaponization of bureaucracy; and the role of literature and quiet resistance in preserving identity. Beck also examines the muted global response, the complicity of some governments, and the authoritarian playbook that turns Xinjiang into both a warning and a testing ground for repression worldwide. Texas Dems hold the line to keep the nation from fraying under Trump

The Ron Show

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2025 43:29

I've said for a few days now that Donald Trump's goading of Texas to "find" five new safely GOP congressional seats in a highly unusual mid-decade gerrymander could spark something akin to a civil war. Perhaps not a literal "military" rift between red and blue states, but a fraying of the threads that keep them "united" as a nation. Well, it turns out I'm not the only one who thinks that. Bloomberg's Ronald Brownstein sees what I see, too: blue states matching what Texas does to counter-act their stifling of "we, the people's" ability to elect representation vs letting the representation choose us. Where does that lead us as a nation? It's ominous to consider, and more importantly, it's anti-democratic. Perhaps the silver lining in all of this is that Texas' egregious actions could be what finally convinces enough Americans and House members to pursue making gerrymandering illegal - no matter the state doing it. Texas state representative James Talarico - I think of him as "white Obama" - is a pastor, former teacher and rising star in the Democratic Party. He's everything scumbags like Ted Cruz isn't: courageous, decent and lives his morals and values. He's among the handful of Democrats refusing to give Governor Greg Abbott the legislative quorum required to pass the Trump-ordered gerrymander. Do keep an eye on him if you aren't already. Meanwhile, Donald Trump thinks he has the power to have the Commerce Department "re-do" the 2020 census to remove undocumented people from the count. Never mind the unconstitutional nature of the order (buy when's that stopped him before?) but say he does it: doesn't that also mean Texas loses three U.S. House seats when 2.1 million immigrants aren't counted? Derp. ------Closer to home, Georgia's still fighting the Civil War in a court battle with the Sons of the Confederacy. You see, Stone Mountain Park, just outside Atlanta - the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan - had long been a magnet glorifying the Confederacy. After civil rights protests in 2020, the state drew down a lot of that, and the SOCVs are throwing a judicial hissy. Here again, a Kemp-led Georgia (a broke clock being right occasionally) steered from pandering to Confederate fetishists, and Trump's recent emboldening of said fetishism has them itching for a fight. ------Lastly - and this is rich - Georgia attorney general Chris Carr is howling like a scalded dog because his 2026 GOP gubernatorial combatant (Burt Jones) has the benefit of a state law giving him cover to fundraise using a "leadership committee" only state legislators or governors or lieutenant governors can use prior to winning party primaries. Here's the funny part: AG Carr has been defending the law that created that unfair advantage in court since it became law. Also, a Republican whining about there being "too much money" in campaigns when his party's done everything they could to let as much big money sicken the process for decades.

Ken and Dave discuss lowering the British voting age, Democrats on Epstein, Florida Man strikes again, Trump's swollen ankles, ousting Colbert, Chris Carr getting dirty, PBS on its own, and the government gets involved in crypto. ----- This episode of the "Let Me Tell You Why You're Wrong Podcast," hosted by Dave Roberts and  Ken Pullin, covers a range of current events and political discussions.    • Local Government Issues: Ken Pullin shares insights into Pike County's local government, including his dissent on tax incentives for a solar farm and the general lack of public discussion on important items in commission meetings. He expresses concern about decisions being made without proper deliberation and the absence of televised public meetings in Pike County, advocating for greater transparency. He also critiques past decisions by the Industrial Development Authority, such as losing money on movie studio projects during an economic downturn. • Coldplay "Kiss Cam" Scandal: The hosts discuss the viral incident involving Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR Head Kristine Cabot who were caught on a "Kiss Cam" at a Coldplay concert, leading to Byron being placed on leave. The clip showed them "cuddling and smiling" before attempting to hide when seeing themselves on screen. Social media reactions to the event were also highlighted. • Brant Frost Financial Scandal: An update is provided on Brandt Frost IV, who issued an apology for his actions, taking "full responsibility". The discussion raises questions about whether this will become a criminal matter and mentions calls for politicians to return campaign donations from the Frost family. Notably, Brant Frost V, the son, filed paperwork to create a new lending firm shortly after his father's firm shut down, which the hosts found suspiciously timed. • UK Voting Age & Populism: The UK's decision to lower the voting age to 16 in all elections is debated, with concerns raised about "taxation without representation" as the reasoning and the broader implications for populism in politics. • Epstein List Controversy: The ongoing saga of the Epstein list is touched upon, including the political back-and-forth regarding its release and the recent directive from Trump to release grand jury testimony. The hosts discuss the challenges of linking individuals on flight manifests to illegal activities. • Miscellaneous News:     ◦ A Florida man was arrested for molesting goats at a zoo.     ◦ A discussion about chimpanzees adopting fashion trends with grass and sticks.     ◦ The media's focus on Donald Trump's chronic venous insufficiency (swollen ankles) is contrasted with their perceived lack of attention to President Biden's health.     ◦ The cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2026 is announced, with critical commentary on Colbert's comedic style and political focus.     ◦ The Georgia Governor's race is mentioned, specifically the legal challenge by Chris Carr against Burt Jones regarding a $10 million campaign loan.     ◦ Congress's $9 billion budget cut, including over a billion dollars from NPR and PBS, is discussed and largely supported by the hosts, who argue public broadcasting should be self-funded.     ◦ The new "Genius Act" regulating stablecoins is explained, highlighting the benefits of easier international money transfers but also raising concerns about a potential cashless society and government control over finances.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tim Weiner joins Matt to discuss The Mission, his new history of the CIA in the 21st century. They explore the agency's quiet successes and moral failings, from dismantling the AQ Khan network to abetting torture and losing its way in Iraq. Weiner recounts how the CIA reoriented after the 2016 Russian election interference, played a key role in supporting Ukraine, and tried to hold the line under Trump. Their conversation spans secret wars, agency leadership, and whether America's intelligence services can still defend democracy when democracy itself is under threat. Matt is joined by nonproliferation expert Joe Cirincione to unpack what the recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran actually achieved—and what they didn't. They discuss the extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program, why military action alone can't stop a country from getting the bomb, and what a viable diplomatic path forward might look like. Joe breaks down the technical realities of uranium enrichment and covert weapons development, explores whether Iran now has the intent as well as the capability to build a nuclear weapon, and explains how this crisis risks pushing the world back toward nuclear anarchy. This week, Matt and Chris break down the recent NATO summit, where Trump's presence loomed large—even as the alliance bent over backwards to avoid a blow-up. Matt argues that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's cringe-worthy text to Trump might've been politically shrewd, and the guys dive into Europe's growing defense commitments, defense-industrial capacity, and public skepticism over military spending. Then, they take a hard look at presidential war powers in the wake of Trump's strikes on Iran, using Syria 2013 as a case study in how Congress has repeatedly abdicated its role. Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Corps of Engineers reopening seven more Lake Lanier parks The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with Forsyth and Hall counties to reopen nearly all nine previously closed parks on Lake Lanier for the Fourth of July weekend. Six parks will operate under one-year agreements with the counties, while Burton Mill Park will temporarily open for the holiday weekend. This collaboration aims to provide recreational access while addressing staffing shortages that initially threatened to close 21 parks. Only two parks, Van Pugh North and South, will remain closed as hiring efforts continue to support long-term operations. STORY 2: NAACP accuses Gwinnett DA of mishandling shooting case, wants AG to reopen case A dispute has arisen over the Gwinnett DA's decision not to prosecute Alejandro Querales Morales, who shot Jalyne Evans-Jones through his door after she and her husband asked him to lower his music in August 2023. Evans-Jones, who survived with permanent injuries, and the NAACP claim the case was mishandled, citing lack of investigation and communication. The DA’s office argued there wasn’t enough evidence, pointing to a witness who claimed Evans-Jones' husband had a gun. The NAACP is urging Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to reopen the case, alleging misconduct, though Carr’s office stated it lacks jurisdiction. Evans-Jones and her husband have also filed a civil lawsuit. STORY 3: Gwinnett Stripers partner with TeamSmile to provide free dental exams for local underserved children Underserved children in Gwinnett County will receive free dental exams and oral health education on July 8, thanks to a partnership between the Gwinnett Stripers, TeamSmile, Delta Dental, and Sun Life U.S. Held at Cooray Field, the event will feature pro athletes, mascots, and entertainment to create a fun atmosphere. Children with dental issues will be referred to TeamSmile’s Dental Home Project for long-term care. Since 2007, TeamSmile has provided over $22 million in free dental care to more than 60,000 children nationwide. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: STORY 4: State audit of state program for kids produced mixed results A state audit of the Georgia Family Connection Partnership, which received $30 million in funding for fiscal year 2024, revealed mixed results in improving child well-being indicators. While the program positively impacted high school graduation and teen birth rates, it showed no evidence of improvement in child abuse, low birthweight babies, or child poverty. Auditors criticized the program's decentralized model for limiting measurable impact and disagreed with the partnership’s claim that results were "promising." Established in 1991, the initiative aims to address Georgia's historically low child well-being rankings but faces challenges in demonstrating consistent statewide outcomes. STORY 5: Police: Mercedes SUV was stolen while being transported out of state Gwinnett County police are searching for a stolen 2025 matte gray Mercedes GLS with distinctive 24-inch Forgiato wheels. The SUV was last seen on June 6 when a subcontractor picked it up from a Snellville home to transport it out of state, but it never arrived. Police are seeking public assistance and encourage anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, which offers cash rewards for tips leading to an arrest and indictment. This week, Matt is joined by terrorism researcher Jacob Ware to unpack the rise of nihilistic violent extremism—attacks carried out by disaffected young men radicalized online without any clear political goal. They explore how social media fuels this chaotic new threat, why the FBI created a new classification for it, and what makes networks like 764 and the Order of Nine Angles so dangerous. Then, they turn to the recent string of violent antisemitic attacks in the US and what they reveal about the blurred lines between far-left, far-right, and jihadist extremism. It's a disturbing look at the future of terrorism, and what it means when violence itself becomes the ideology. Ross, who works with a network of scholars and specialists focused on minority religions and extremism, explores how modern pagan traditions, particularly those rooted in Germanic and Slavic identity, are increasingly weaponized by extremist movements on both sides of the Ukraine War. From the myth of the warrior ideal to the role of neo-paganism in Russian special forces and the Azov movement, Ross unpacks the ideological messiness, spiritual camouflage, and social vulnerabilities that make these belief systems ripe for radicalization. They also discuss the “folkish vs. inclusive” divide, the algorithm's role in spreading conspiratorial spirituality, and why mainstream institutions need to step up—not just to contain extremism, but to support resilient, non-violent expressions of cultural identity. Candace Rondeaux joins Chris to unpack the dark mythology and hard realities behind the Wagner Group, drawing from her investigative book Putin's Sledgehammer. They explore Wagner's roots in post-Soviet chaos, its fusion of state power and criminal underworlds, and its critical role in Russia's foreign policy ambitions from Syria to Africa to Ukraine. Candace explains how Wagner became a key tool for circumventing sanctions, selling arms, spreading disinformation, and exporting Russia's influence under the guise of deniability. They discuss the rise and fall of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Wagner's shadowy presence in Zelensky's early presidency, and how the group evolved into today's “Africa Corps.” Plus: assassination attempts, troll farms, and how a sledgehammer murder became a viral propaganda symbol. In this week's Espresso Martini, Chris and Matt dig into a wave of elections across the UK, Canada, and Australia, exploring what they signal for populist movements, center-left parties, and Trump-style politics beyond US borders. They break down the rise of Reform UK, growing concerns over Nigel Farage's influence, and why British voters seem caught in a cycle of backlash politics. Then, a pair of liberal wins in Canada and Australia suggest that even the faintest whiff of Trumpism remains a liability overseas. Finally, they dissect the demotion of Mike Waltz, explain why combining the roles of secretary of state and national security advisor is historically fraught, and ask whether the Trump White House has learned anything—or simply become more ruthless in its chaos. All that, plus Larry the Cat for PM, the specter of Musk in British politics, and an earnest thank-you to recent reviewers. Photographer and field researcher Michał Rokita joins Matt to discuss his rare and meticulous efforts to document one of the world's most secretive military sites: Area 51. From hiking remote peaks in the Nevada desert to capturing panoramic images from over 20 miles away, Michał shares what it takes to legally photograph Groom Lake from public land. They explore the history of the Dreamland Interceptors, the challenges of desert spotting, and the moments he's witnessed — stealth fighters, unannounced landings, and one night when his presence may have scrubbed a secret test flight. It's a real-world look at Area 51, far from the conspiracy theories, and the dedicated hobbyists preserving its history from a distance. Is the Chinese military really ready for war? In this episode, Chris and Matt speak with Timothy Heath, a senior international defense researcher at RAND Corporation, about his provocative new report The Chinese Military's Doubtful Combat Readiness. Heath argues that the PLA remains deeply shaped by its political mission to preserve CCP rule—and is poorly optimized for high-end combat. They discuss how China's military modernization masks enduring political constraints, why in his view war over Taiwan remains unlikely, and what China might do instead to challenge US interests through proxy warfare, cyber, and global coercion. Heath also explores the CCP's legitimacy crisis, China's evolving strategic partnerships with Russia and Iran, and why the specter of global systemic war can't be ruled out.
