In the early 1900s there lived one of the most remarkable detectives in history that you've likely never heard of. Her name was Grace Humiston, although back then newspapers began singing her praises, and dubbed her Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/theconspiratorspodcastMerchandise Store:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/the-conspirators-podcast?ref_id=13696 Notes:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H03I7KE/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1https://narratively.com/they-called-her-mrs-sherlock-holmes/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/mrs-sherlock-holmes-takes-on-the-nypd-60624549/https://www.historyextra.com/period/first-world-war/what-happened-mrs-sherlock-holmes-mystery-ruth-cruger-disappearance-murder-grace-humiston/ Music:Dexter Britain, The Tea Partyhttps://dexterbritain.com/

It was February of 1917, and 18-year-old Ruth Cruger was missing. Her family panicked. They called the police. But detectives didn’t seem too concerned. They assured the family that Ruth would come back. And if she didn’t? Well, Ruth was probably… on the prowl. The Crugers were offended by the implication, and incensed that the police weren’t taking them seriously. Months went by. Despite a credible suspect, the case went cold. So the Crugers did the only thing they could think to do. They hired a courageous, tenacious attorney named Grace Humiston. By the end of the saga, Grace would be dubbed, ‘Mrs. Sherlock Holmes.’ Then Brandi tells us about a shocking event that bystanders initially wrote off as a joke. It was the day before Halloween, in 1985, at the Springfield Mall in Springfield, Pennsylvania. A woman approached the mall wearing fatigues. She carried a gun. Most people thought she was in costume. Then she fired her very real weapon. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes Takes on the NYPD” by Karen Abbott for Smithsonian Mag “Missing in Action” By David Krajicek for the New York Daily News The “Mrs. Sherlock Homes” episode of Criminal, where Brad Ricca is interviewed for his book, “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes: The true story of New York city’s greatest female detective and the 1917 missing girl case that captivated a nation” “Cocchi implicated in police grafting,” New York Herald June 23, 1917 “Buried Truth,” by Joseph McNamara for The Daily News “Cocchi says his wife killed girl,” Daily News June 26, 1919 In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Sylvia Seegrist: Guilty But Insane” by Katherine Ramsland, The Crime Library “Sylvia Seegrist went psycho and killed three innocent people at the Springfield, Pa., mall” by Mara Bovsun, New York Daily News “Decades After Sylvia Seegrist, Mentally Ill People Are Still Murdering Innocents” by Victor Fiorillo, Philadelphia Magazine “Sylvia Seegrist”http://wikipedia.org

Richard Redlefsen is someone I saw for the first time a few years back at the UMAE where he was applying his demo makeup on the PPI stand. What was of note for me was how particular and precise everything was. Care was taken at every turn, and it struck me that the amount of effort that takes must come from a deep well. So it was a great pleasure to sit and chat with the man himself, and I could ask if he thought of this about himself and if we could pick apart where that comes from. As you'll hear, Richard had a career as a dancer before he embarked on makeup, and his training was thorough. I think that experience and also working for a makeup brand such as Lancôme meant his work doesn't start and stop with bits of rubber! Follow Richard on his Instagram to see just how versatile this chap is. Check out a brief selection of the range Richard covers. A Devil mask sculpt completed recently for Immortal Masks. Claudia Alta (Lady 'Bird' Johnson) wrap-around prosthetic sculpt ready to mould. Zombie makeup on Eva Minaeva for TUSH magazine. Phantom makeup from Monsterpalooza 2016. A 1920s beauty makeup on Sarah Sokolovic from the NBC show Timeless. Sarah plays Grace Humiston (the first female Special Assistant United States Attorney). Makeup was usually done by Peter DeOliveira, and Richard filled in on this day. It's quite a responsibility to fill in seamlessly on a show with established looks. Another beauty makeup on Bianca Lopez from NBC show Timeless. Makeup by Richard Redlefsen. Debbie Zoller makeup dept head. We interview Brad Ricca and discuss his book-"Mrs. Holmes"it tells the incredible story of Grace Humiston, the lawyer, and detective who solved the famous cold case of Ruth Cruger, an 18-year-old girl who disappeared in 1917. Grace was an amazing lawyer and travelling detective during a time when no women were practising in the legal profession. She focused on solving cases no one else wanted and advocating for innocents. Grace became the first female US District Attorney and made ground-breaking investigations into the practice of modern slavery. In the Ruth Cruger case, Grace followed a trail of corruption that led from New York to Italy. Her work changed how the country viewed the problem of missing girls. But the victory came with a price.
