HMSG Interview Jack Bennett - "Brain Damage!"This week we chat about the Frank Henenlotter film, BRAIN DAMAGE (1988) with JACK BENNETT - fabulous filmmaker and friend of the show! We bonded with Bennett over his love for weird and wonderful things and the delightful practical effects used in this cult classic. Jack Bennett started his career as a DIY writer-director in Southwest Virginia, alternating self-produced narrative films with work as a for-hire cameraman and editor. After his horror movie CAPRICE played the international film festival circuit in 2010, Jack relocated to Los Angeles and has built a body of work across a variety of genres. His recent directing credits include the horror shorts GOOD NIGHT, EVERYONE'S A CRITIC and A GOOD SCREAM, the concert films MR. BUNGLE: THE NIGHT THEY CAME HOME and ANTHRAX XL, the feature-length NEVER SURRENDER: A GALAXY QUEST DOCUMENTARY, music videos for Brian Posehn's comedy/metal record GRANDPA METAL and a documentary tribute to the life and legend of music icon Meat Loaf. Bennett has produced and conducted on-camera interviews with such luminaries as Sigourney Weaver, Keanu Reeves, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Lloyd, John Carpenter, Rob Zombie, Slash and Academy Award-winning Breaking Bad/Rain Man producer Mark Johnson, among others, and contributed to convention panels as moderator and guest at Comic Con, FanX, Monsterpalooza, Days of the Dead and Rock & Shock. We're kicking off Pride Month with a real one for ya: and that would be Caye Casa's very, very dark and very, very disturbing Spanish film, THE COFFEE TABLE (released in the States in 2024, but in its home country in 2022)… and while it may not have much to with anything LGBTQ-related (don't worry, we gotchu soon), there's still plenty to slash up and bleed out, including but not limited to bad relationships, teen Lolitas and their trampy mothers, subtitles that may or may not translate accordingly, current Shudder releases, and… well… babies… With that being said, we're going to add this: TRIGGER WARNING. HUGE. And yes, spoilers await, so if you haven't seen this movie, watch it first, if you can stomach it. Please feel free to review us on Apple Podcasts or Spotify! Happy Pride Month to all our beautiful gays!Instagram/X/Threads/YouTube: @thegorygaysE-mail: thegorygays@gmail.com

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Francis Galluppi (THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his debut feature. From playing drums in punk bands before a broken wrist found him with 6 months off and time on his hands to teach himself how to make movies through watching YouTube tutorials… to his musical approach to his filmmaking craft… to the crazy story of how his short film playing at a horror convention lead to him raising the financing for YUMA (in theaters now)… to writing the film's script based around the locations and resources he knew he could get… to how accepting an offer to option his script almost prevented his film from ever getting made… to how he shot in a commonly used location yet made it appear unique… and how he was able to put such an incredible cast together on such a limited budget… Francis' success story will surely inspire every aspiring filmmaker that hears it! The boys also reflect on the 11th anniversary of THE MOVIE CRYPT which premiered on May 6, 2013. Meet Adam Green, Kane Hodder, and Danielle Harris at TEXAS FRIGHTMARE in Irving, TX May 17th - 19th where they will be doing the first ever HATCHET photo-op including Kane and Danielle in costume! Adam, Kane, and Tony Todd will also be appearing at MONSTERPALOOZA in Pasadena, CA May 31st - June 2nd where creatures from the ArieScope Studio will be on display in the convention's museum!
PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Vera Drew (THE PEOPLE'S JOKER) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss her career journey and the making of her debut feature THE PEOPLE'S JOKER - in theaters now! From her work with Second City in college and her love of performing live comedy… to her first internship working with the amazing Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim… to going on to editing on show's like Sacha Baron Cohen's WHO IS AMERICA, TIM AND ERIC'S BEDTIME STORES, COMEDY BANG BANG, and I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE… to the moment that she realized it was time to move on and do her own thing… to how she came to the decision to tell her deeply personal story in the form of THE PEOPLE'S JOKER - a queer coming of age movie that parodies the characters of DC comics… to how she pulled off such a technically complex production while simultaneously feeling she was physically coming apart herself… to her film's triumphant premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the legalities that followed which ALMOST set the film back… to the pros and cons of crowd funding and the delicate balance of managing a team of uniquely different visual artists… Vera truly opens up in this inspiring conversation that is both comical and touching. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker trying to cope with the anxiety of directing, Vera gives sound advice on what to consider before going the “parody” or “fair use” route with a project, and Adam finally confronts Joe over an issue he's had with him for years. Meet Adam and Joe THIS WEEKEND at ASTRONOMICON in Livonia, MI (April 12th - 14th)! Adam will also be appearing at NEW JERSEY HORROR CON in Edison, NJ (April 19 - 21), TEXAS FRIGHTMARE WEEKEND in Irving, TX (May 17 - 19), MONSTERPALOOZA in Pasadena, CA (May 31 - June 2), and SCAREFEST in Lexington, KY (Oct 18 - 20)! PUBLIC VERSION. Actor and producer Jonathan Lipnicki (JERRY MAGUIRE, STUART LITTLE, THE LITTLE VAMPIRE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From his start as a child star in JERRY MAGUIRE, THE LITTLE VAMPIRE and LIKE MIKE… to what it was like working opposite a CG mouse in the STUART LITTLE films… to why he credits his parents for how he remained grounded and avoided the dark side of childhood stardom… to continuing to consistently act on both stage and screen as he grew up… to why he made the decision to move out of Los Angeles… to more recently working as a producer… to the making of his latest slasher feature CAMP PLEASANT LAKE (now available)… Jonathan is full of great advice on how to remain proactive and how to find happiness in both your craft and your real life. Meet Adam and Joe NEXT weekend at ASTRONOMICON in Livonia, MI (April 12th - 14th)! Filmmaker Weston Razooli (RIDDLE OF FIRE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss the making of his debut feature film which is currently playing in US theaters. From the films that influenced the young filmmaker before art school beckoned him… to how he cast the kids as the leads in his bespoke quest… to how he got his cast and crew on board with the style of the world he was creating… to shooting on Super 16mm and why he almost pulled the plug on the film just a few days in to shooting… to what it took to get a music cue from one of the most infamous horror films of the 70's… to RIDDLE OF FIRE's amazing world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival… Weston's debut film is one of the most unique cinematic experiences of the year and this conversation is all that and a plate full of blow pops!
