Neil Young's otherworldly ability to morph between raging metalhead to the most sentimental of romantics never fails to astound. Always uncompromising, this cranky Canadian has been inflexible in his stance to be unencumbered - and, prolific - recording over 45 solo albums, not to mention those classics created with Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y. Surviving polio as a child, and a brain aneurysm in middle age, he kept coming back stronger than ever.  I've seen him live twice: at the Greek Theater during the Greendale tour, then again a couple of years back when my son and I flew to Tucson to celebrate the slower, less blazing, but still mesmerizing octogenarian troubadour. His music has been a touchstone throughout my life, starting with the iconic Reprise album “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere” which contained Down by the River - a dorm room sing along. His vast catalogue makes it difficult to pick only ten covers, but the range here is evident, swinging from Pearl Jam's live version of Keep on Rockin' in the Free World to Emmylou Harris's wistful floatation on Daniel Lanois's diaphanous Wrecking Ball. It's appalling that Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of a nation with the history of the once-Great Britain, is currently not simply groveling before China's Communist Emperor Xi Jinping. He's actively appeasing freedom's mortal enemy.  Last week, the U.K. approved a vast new Chinese embassy in London. Now, Starmer wants Parliament to bless a disastrous deal likely to result in the Chinese taking over a strategic U.S. military installation called Diego Garcia.  Dozens of influential British and American patriots are issuing today a powerful public statement opposing this unforced error of epic proportions.  Coming in the wake of Canada's odious “separate peace” with the Chinese Communist Party last week, London's pursuit of a new “special relationship” with Beijing can only further embolden Xi Jinping – and invite his aggression at the expense of Taiwan and what else is left of the Free World.  This is Frank Gaffney.

The Fake of Democracy The Black Spy Podcast 228, Season 23, Episode 0007 This week Carlton King asks - is Democracy a con? In this critical thinking episode of the Black Spy Podcast Carlton poses the seldom asked question how could the USA be the leader of the free world from 1945 onward when African American 1/5 of the US population were effectively denied the right to vote, have substantial schooling, suffered extreme discrimination in housing - employment - policing - judicial sentencing - banking & finance (loans not being available to blacks) and indeed any type of social, cultural and national interaction. Moreover, the final nail in the US's democratic credentials is that from the end of the US civil war in 1865 all the way through to the early 1980's, the lynching of African American men and indeed women was not unusual. So I ask, how could the USA be seen as the leader of the Free World - possibly it was because the West: Central & South America the European colonies in Africa and Asia and Settler states in these areas and Oceana treated their African and black and brown subjugated peoples in exactly the same manner. So often, in the modern era, democracy is compared and contrasted as such: At its core, democracy means rule by the people — people participate in choosing leaders and shaping public life through free, fair, and inclusive elections and meaningful civil liberties. It also presumes equal rights and protections for all citizens. Historical contradictions: Today's democracies — including the United States — have often fallen short of this ideal. In U.S. history, Black Americans and other minorities were legally excluded from voting and full citizenship well into the 20th century; segregation restricted basic civil rights long after the U.S. became a global power claiming to champion "freedom." These contradictions reflect democratic backsliding — where institutions and practices don't live up to democratic principles, often due to inequality, exclusion, or political manipulation. Venezuela and democracy: Venezuela's recent elections (e.g., July 2024) have been widely criticized for lacking transparency, fairness, and real competition, with opposition candidates disqualified and results disputed. Many governments, including the U.S. and EU, refused to recognize the outcome. Meanwhile U.S. policy — refusing to recognize Nicolás Maduro's presidency and pushing sanctions or pressure — illustrates how geopolitical interests and claims about "democracy" intersect with power politics. Comparisons with Russia and China: Russia and China hold elections or consultative processes, but these often lack competitiveness, independent media, and checks on power that typify liberal democracy. Critics argue these systems do not meet international standards of democratic legitimacy, even if leaders are formally chosen. Conclusion: Democracy is a normative ideal, not a fixed reality. All political systems, including those that call themselves democratic, have gaps between theory and practice. Assessments of democracy must look beyond elections — at fairness, rights, freedom of expression, rule of law, and equal participation — not merely at who occupies office. Will the Democrats ever give Trump the benefit of good? 

Do you have an idea of how America is being received by the Islamic world? If you don't get their news, I can report that President Trump is a rock star in the Muslim world.President Trump is the most respected leader in the world. There is no doubt about this. However, MSNBC's Steve Benen wrote in July of this year: Exactly two years ago this week, Donald Trump sat down with Fox News' Bret Baier, and the host asked the Republican what he considers the most important issue facing the country. Trump talked about his usual priorities — the economy, border security, getting “the woke out of our military,” et al. — before focusing on his principal point of concern.“Basically, respect all over the world,” Trump said. “We don't have it anymore. We had tremendous respect three years ago [in 2020]. We don't have respect anymore. ... We have to get that respect back. They are using the shutdown and their latest plan to put pressure on Trump and destroy the economy. Their plan was to shift the economy to China for the great reset. Trump countered the plan. Trump will be releasing the inflation report to counter the Fed plan not to Trump rates. Throughout the all of this gold has held steady, nations are accumulating gold. The [DS] is panicking, the shutdown is not working the way they thought. The people are not on their side. The [DS] is trying to use it so the military,NG and ICE do not get paid and this way the illegals are then not deported and when they push the riots there will be no military and NG. Trump countered the plan, he is paying the military. Trump is testing the judiciary with the indictments of Comey, James and soon Schiff and Bolton. During the shutdown Trump is draining the swamp. Our relationship with China over the past six months has been a very good one, thereby making this move on Trade an even more surprising one. I have always felt that they've been lying in wait, and now, as usual, I have been proven right! There is no way that China should be allowed to hold the World “captive,” but that seems to have been their plan for quite some time, starting with the “Magnets” and, other Elements that they have quietly amassed into somewhat of a Monopoly position, a rather sinister and hostile move, to say the least. But the U.S. has Monopoly positions also, much stronger and more far reaching than China's. I have just not chosen to use them, there was never a reason for me to do so — UNTIL NOW! The letter they sent is many pages long, and details, with great specificity, each and every Element that they want to withhold from other Nations. Things that were routine are no longer routine at all. I have not spoken to President Xi because there was no reason to do so. This was a real surprise, not only to me, but to all the Leaders of the Free World. I was to meet President Xi in two weeks, at APEC, in South Korea, but now there seems to be no reason to do so. The Chinese letters were especially inappropriate in that this was the Day that, after three thousand years of bedlam and fighting, there is PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. I wonder if that timing was coincidental? Dependent on what China says about the hostile “order” that they have just put out, I will be forced, as President of the United States of America, to financially counter their move. For every Element that they have been able to monopolize, we have two. I never thought it would come to this but perhaps, as with all things, the time has come. Ultimately, though potentially painful, it will be a very good thing, in the end, for the U.S.A. One of the Policies that we are calculating at this moment is a massive increase of Tariffs on Chinese products coming into the United States of America. This week's special guest, Adrian Karatnycky, has been on the frontlines for decades fighting for democracy both at home and abroad. In his critically acclaimed book Battleground Ukraine, Adrian traces Ukraine's struggle for independence from the fall of the Soviet Union to Russia's genocidal invasion today, drawing important lessons for protecting democracies worldwide. He has worked alongside civil rights legend Bayard Rustin and the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in America. He also supported Poland's Solidarity movement, which helped bring down the Iron Curtain, and played a key role in preserving Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in the 1990s, when many thought the Cold War had ended.  In part one of their discussion, Andrea and Adrian explore how Europe and the free world can survive the chaos of Trump's America First isolationism and Russia's weaponized corruption and election interference.
