"All my life, my heart has sought a thing I cannot name." - Hunter S. Thomson This quote really grabbed my attention this weekend and has been on my mind ever since reading it. It has put into words what I have been feeling and illustrates why I often experience frustration when I appear to be doing everything I can to become the man and father I am capable of, yet still feel unsatisfied and that real deep change is just out of reach. It is like we are almost there - like we get a whiff of contentment and peace and fulfillment, catch a brief glance, but we can't grasp them, and they escape again, leaving us facing the same sense of dull unease, anxiety and ever-present low or even high-level stress. That is why I think it is essential to reflect on these words, and whether or not we actually know what we are seeking. Without that knowledge of ourselves and what holds contentment and meaning for us, we are just spinning our wheels, reading, and learning, and doing, and planning, yet feel the same way we did before we reached our goals or realised our vision.
Dr. Kary Banks Mullis was a fascinating and complicated man. After winning a Nobel Prize in 1993 the first thing he did was go surfing. His discovery has been called the most important in the last century and it has been used to exonerate falsely accused men on death row; and most recently we have all been faced with being tested by a product of his method. His mysterious death in 2019 has led some people to believe that there is more to the story. In this episode I'll tell you the story of an extraordinary maverick that's been called among other things, a Hunter S. Thomson in a lab coat. Susan McWilliams is a professor of politics at Pomona College and the granddaughter of Carey McWilliams, editor of The Nation magazine from 1955 to 1975. It was during that time that Hunter S. Thomson published his legendary article "Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs" for the publication. In a recent op-ed for The Nation entitled “This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. Thompson,” she writes that "this year, when people asked me what I thought of the election, I kept telling them to read 'Hell's Angels.'" On this week's TrumpWatch, Professor McWilliams expands on why the “gonzo” journalist's work on the motorcycle club continues to be such an effective window into the psyche of the President's core base of supporters.
