In this week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, Todd Bensman, the Center's Texas-based Senior National Security Fellow, discusses his experiences at the Center as he prepares to depart for a new role working with Border Czar Tom Homan. Bensman and host Mark Krikorian reflect on his nearly seven-year tenure at the Center, focusing on his firsthand experiences with border issues, extensively documented in two books authored while at the Center.Growing out of field research for the Center in Latin America and his graduate studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, Bensman's first book, America's Covert Border War, addressed the national security challenges of the border, specifically focusing on “special interest aliens” – i.e. illegal border-crossers from countries where jihadist terror groups operate.Bensman's second book, Overrun, is a history of the Biden border crisis, based also on numerous visits to Mexico and Central and South America, where he interviewed hundreds of migrants, officials, aid workers, and others. Bensman uncovered the CBP One program during its pilot phase, prior to its public disclosure, shed light on UN funding for illegal immigration, and provided on-the-ground reporting during significant events such as the Del Rio migrant crisis and the lead-up to the end of Title 42.In his closing commentary, Krikorian weighed in on the recent admission of several dozen Afrikaners from South Africa into the United States as refugees, highlighting facets of the issue not addressed in most media coverage.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration StudiesGuestTodd Bensman is the (soon to be former) Senior National Security Fellow.RelatedBenman's Author PageBensman's Video PlaylistAmerica's Covert Border War: The Untold Story of the Nation's Battle to Prevent Jihadist InfiltrationOverrun: How Joe Biden Unleashed the Greatest Border Crisis in U.S. HistoryAfrikaners: Persecuted Refugees or White-Privileged Aliens?Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. The Best Movie Plot Twists I came across an article that was discussing how a good movie will lead you down one path and then in a “Plot Twist” send you down a different and completely unexpected new path. That got me thinking about what were my most memorable plot twists from movies that I have watched over the years. I have come up with four that have stayed with me. What are your favorites? The Sixth Sense (1999) - The twist redefines the entire story, forcing viewers to rethink every scene. It's iconic for its emotional weight and subtle foreshadowing, often cited as the gold standard of plot twists. In this case you learn that Bruce Willis' character Malcolm Crowe was actually deceased. I hate to admit it but I never saw this coming. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - The revelation Darth Vader is Luke's Father altered the saga's emotional core and is still one of the most quoted twists ever. Planet of the Apes (1968) - we are talking about the original here with Charlton Heston. The last scene leads up to the final payoff making it one of the most memorable twists in cinema. Se7en (1995) - The climax delivers a horrific surprise that ties the story's themes together. It's a twist that's both brutal and unforgettable, often debated for its boldness. The twist, John Doe played by Kevin Spacey manipulates Mills played by Brad Pitt emotionally to commit the seventh deadly sin. Braden's Pics: Usual Suspects Fight Club Shutter Island Memento

This week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy focuses on the re-opening of ICE's Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) office. Originally established by the Trump administration in 2017 to provide critical support to victims and families affected by crimes linked to illegal immigration, the VOICE office was shut down by the Biden administration, but has been reinstated by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.ImageGuest host Jessica Vaughan, Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, is joined by two parents who lost their children to crimes committed by illegal aliens. They share their personal stories and experiences, highlighting how the VOICE office provided them with support and resources.Don Rosenberg, President of Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime (AVIAC), whose son Drew was killed by an unlicensed illegal immigrant in a hit-and-run crash.Tammy Nobles, mother of Kayla Hamilton, a 20-year-old autistic woman who was raped and murdered by an MS-13 gang member illegally present in the U.S.Vaughan then highlights Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's warning to federal highway fund recipients: comply with federal immigration law or risk losing funding. On his list of public safety concerns: states that issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia presently issue licenses to this population.Rosenburg, the president of AVIAC and an activist focused on unlicensed drivers and road safety, discusses his research into the impact of this policy, stating that there is no evidence that providing driver's licenses to illegal aliens improves road safety. In fact, he shares data showing that fatal crashes rise, as do hit-and-runs, in the first few years after such a policy is implemented.HostJessica Vaughan is the Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestsDon Rosenberg, President of Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime (AVIAC), whose son Drew was killed by an unlicensed illegal immigrant in a hit-and-run crash.Tammy Nobles, mother of Kayla Hamilton, a 20-year-old autistic woman who was raped and murdered by an MS-13 gang member illegally present in the U.S.RelatedVictims and Their Families Finally Get a VOICESilencing VOICE: Despite being shuttered by Biden, the need for ICE's victim-assistance office is greater than everVOICE websiteAVIAC: Advocates For Victims of Illegal Alien CrimeIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. This week we're diving into a cult classic — Escape from the Planet of the Apes — and it's all thanks to our great Patreon supporter, Leigh! Leigh's not just a top supporter; he also runs a fantastic YouTube channel called Movie Vent where he shares his love for all things cinema with Ventriloquist dummy, Ned. Check it out at youtube.com/@ventmovies.Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) marked a clever shift in the Planet of the Apes franchise, driven by budget constraints and the desire to keep the series alive after the apocalyptic ending of the previous film. Director Don Taylor stepped in to helm the project, which reversed the formula by bringing the apes into the contemporary human world instead of humans stumbling into the apes' future. The screenplay, written by Paul Dehn, embraced elements of satire and social commentary, while working within a significantly smaller budget than its predecessors. To keep costs down, much of the action was set in familiar, modern-day Los Angeles locations, and only a few characters required full prosthetic makeup compared to the previous films' elaborate ape societies. The production leaned heavily on the strong performances of Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter, reprising their roles as Cornelius and Zira, to carry the emotional weight of the story. Special effects were kept minimal, but John Chambers' iconic makeup design for the apes remained a standout. The studio saw Escape as a gamble, pivoting the franchise from large-scale spectacle to a more character-driven drama with underlying themes of fear, prejudice, and destiny. Despite initial doubts, the movie was a financial success and breathed new life into the series, paving the way for even more sequels down the line.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is doomed, three apes take one last chance... and crash-land straight into 1970s America! In this 73rd episode we break down the first issue of the most recent apes comic series, Beware the Planet of the Apes. This 2024 Marvel Comics series tells a prequel story in a 4 issue miniseries set just before the events of the 1968 film.    Nova takes center stage in a tale that disregards all previous tie-in material that served as prequels to the first movie such as Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes and Death of the Planet of the Apes along with the entirety of the BOOM! Studios era.   This is a new adventure set in the classic continuity of the original PLANET OF THE APES films! In a hostile world run by aggressive gorillas; scientists Cornelius and Zira are the only apes alive who see value in the mute human race - but even they know human capabilities have severe limits.    So when Zira's nephew Lucius goes missing, it is with great trepidation that they turn to a human ally - a young woman who will someday earn the name "Nova"!    But the search for Lucius brings them all deeper into the Forbidden Zone - which is forbidden for a reason. What never-before-seen dangers await them in the ruins? The citizens of Ape City believed they were alone on this planet, but a world of violence lies beyond their borders!   For best enjoyment, watch the video version of this episode to see all the comic pages and panels.   Now, Go Ape!   Show Links:       We recommend watching the YouTube version above! The original Planet of the Apes delivered a gripping, self-contained story. The sequel expanded the lore—and then promptly obliterated the planet. So, how exactly do we get a third film out of this?Money, obviously. But while financial motives are inevitable, what Escape delivers is far more than just a cash grab. The film flips the narrative, bringing the story to Earth. In this week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy, guest host Jessica Vaughan, the Center's director of policy studies, discusses the intersection of immigration policy and municipal finance with Ed Grebeck, a veteran credit market risk expert. About one-third of all municipal bonds issued in 2024 and outstanding through 2024 are from sanctuary jurisdictions, concentrated in large cities and states, such as California, New York, and Massachusetts.Vaughan and Grebeck explore the fiscal implications of sanctuary policies and the need for comprehensive risk assessment in municipal finance. The absence of truly objective bond ratings or comprehensive risk assessments for sanctuary jurisdictions may place investors, particularly individual investors, who own a significant share of this market, at a disadvantage. Sanctuary policies can impose significant burdens on taxpayers, potentially affecting a municipality's fiscal health and its ability to meet financial obligations. Key discussion points include:Why are credit ratings important?Do sanctuary policies compromise a city's creditworthiness? Why might credit rating agencies overlook political risks associated with sanctuary jurisdictions? How does the influx of illegal immigrants strain public resources and affect taxpayers?Would legislative measures, like Rep. Nancy Mace's "No Tax Breaks for Sanctuary Cities Act", address these concerns? In the closing commentary, Vaughan presents the findings from her most recent report on sanctuary jurisdictions, identifying the states and localities that have the most egregious non-cooperation policies leading to the release of tens of thousands of criminal aliens.HostJessica Vaughan is the Director of Policy Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestEd Grebeck is a veteran credit market risk expert.RelatedSanctuary MapWhich Sanctuary Jurisdictions Have Released the Most CriminalsNo Tax Breaks for Sanctuary Cities ActContact Details for Ed GrebeckIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. This week's episode of Parsing Immigration Policy features a discussion of a new report from the Center for Immigration Studies, which reveals that both immigrant and U.S.-born women are having fewer children than they did 15 years ago. Based on data from the 2023 American Community Survey (ACS), collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, the report finds that although immigrant women continue to have somewhat higher fertility rates than their U.S.-born counterparts, the gap is small.Guest Steven Camarota, the Center's Research Director and co-author of the report, highlights a critical reality: Immigration, while adding to population growth, does not significantly slow the aging of the population or reverse declining birth rates. The podcast's second guest, Center Resident Scholar Jason Richwine, provides some evidence that immigration may actually reduce the fertility of the U.S.-born, reducing or potentially erasing immigration's small positive impact on overall U.S. fertility.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestsSteven Camarota is the Director of Research at the Center for Immigration Studies.Jason Richwine is a Resident Scholar at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedThe Fertility of Immigrants and Natives in the United States, 2023Jobs Americans Will Do: Just About All of ThemImmigration in Trump's First 100 DaysIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Case and Jmike are joined by Ed Gross to talk about his books on Superman!   Voices From Krypton Superman: The Definitive History   Overview   In this engaging podcast interview, hosts Case Aiken and Jmike welcome Ed Gross, a prolific author known for his in-depth oral histories, particularly focusing on Superman. The conversation begins with an exploration of Ed's background and his extensive work, including the recently released 'The Definitive History of Superman' and the ambitious 'Voices from Krypton,' which features insights from 250 interviews. Ed shares the intricate process behind creating oral histories, akin to piecing together a jigsaw puzzle, while delving into the complex history of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The dialogue highlights Ed's personal connection to Superman and discusses the legacy of the character, as well as his experiences interviewing various actors who have portrayed Superman. The episode concludes with an announcement of a book giveaway to the listeners, further engaging the audience with Ed's work.   Notes   Introduction to Ed Gross and His Superman Projects (00:00 - 11:37) Case Aiken and Jmike welcome guest Ed Gross to discuss his Superman books. Ed wrote 'Voices from Krypton,' an oral history of Superman that includes interviews with Case. Ed recently completed 'The Definitive History of Superman.' Ed explains his background in oral histories, starting with Star Trek's 50th anniversary in 2015. Oral histories allow presentation of multiple perspectives, including conflicting views. Ed has written 14 books in 9 years, including oral histories of Star Trek, Star Wars, James Bond. 'Voices from Krypton' was a dream project that utilized 40 years of Ed's interviews. Creating Oral Histories and Superman's Legacy (11:37 - 22:26) Ed explains his process for creating oral histories, comparing it to assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Interviews are structured to tell a coherent story while maintaining authentic voices. The book includes 250 interviews in total, creating a 333,000-word, 750-page tome. The Siegel and Shuster story was the most challenging section to research and balance. Ed spent four months researching court papers and interviewing relatives to tell their story fairly. Ed discusses how the creators eventually received credit for Superman before they died. Superman has appeared in some form of production every decade since 1938. ️ Superman's Creation and Complex History (22:26 - 32:30) Ed compares Siegel and Shuster's work-for-hire situation to actors in Gilligan's Island and Star Trek. Despite selling rights for 130, Siegel and Shuster made equivalent of 6 million in first nine years. Ed highlights Neil Adams' significant role in advocating for Superman's creators. Ed discusses his personal connection to Superman since age 5. Superman remains one of Ed's lifetime obsessions alongside Star Trek, Beatles, James Bond. Ed notes he can trace his lifelong interests to a five-year period in his childhood (1967-1972). Ed expresses gratitude for being able to write about his childhood passions professionally. Superman: The Definitive History Book (32:30 - 43:07) Ed was approached to create official Superman history after 'Voices from Krypton' success. The Center for Immigration Studies hosted a panel discussion examining how immigration is used as a political, economic, and strategic tool by governments, non-state, and sub-state actors worldwide. Whether through mass migration crises, policy-driven border surges, or the manipulation of refugee flows, immigration has become a powerful geopolitical weapon and a means of waging hybrid warfare. Examples have included Cuba's use of the Mariel boatlift in 1980 or the more recent efforts by Belarus to coordinate illegal immigration to the EU.This panel explored the concept of immigration warfare – how immigration is leveraged to gain political leverage; influence legislation, elections, and the economy; shape public opinion; and even destabilize a country. Discussion also covered how nations can respond to this growing challenge. The discussion is an activity of the International Network for Immigration Research (INIR), a collaboration among independent policy organizations on three continents sharing the perspective that each sovereign nation has the right to pursue its chosen immigration policies.Mark Krikorian, the Center's executive director and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, moderates this rebroadcast of the Center's panel.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestsViktor Marsai is the Director of the Migration Research Institute in Budapest.Phillip Linderman is a Retired senior Foreign Service officer from the State Department and a Board Member of the Center for Immigration Studies.Eric Ruark is the Director of Research of Numbers USA.RelatedPanel Press ReleasePanel VideoPanel TranscriptC-Span CoverageIntro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Elsewhere in the galaxy, Mon Mothma struggles with her crumbling alliances & mental state as her daughter's wedding day (to the son of a powerful & dubious man) fast approaches... Season 2 assembles a powerhouse cast as Cassian Andor (Diego Luna, known for Rogue One and Narcos) deepens his role in the Rebel Alliance. Standing by his side is Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona, celebrated for Triple Frontier and Good Omens) and the ever‑determined Syril Karn (Kyle Soller, from Poldark and Doll & Em). Denise Gough returns as the uncompromising Dedra Meero (Seven Seconds, How to Get Away with Murder), while Genevieve O'Reilly reprises Mon Mothma (Rogue One, Obi‑Wan Kenobi) with her trademark resolve. Ben Mendelsohn makes a dramatic return as Director Krennic (Rogue One, Bloodline), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes) is also rumored to return as Kino Loy. Rounding out the ensemble are Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay, known for Game of Thrones and Black Mirror), Brasso (Joplin Sibtain, of Troy: Fall of the City and Spooks), and the quietly powerful Wilmon (Muhannad Bhaier, from Mariah: The Diva, the Demons, the Drama) as the rebellion's unsung heroes. We're halfway through PLANET OF THE APE-RIL, Spookies! And we've just about worked our way through all of the originals. This week on Spooky Tuesday, we're wrapping up that portion of our Planet of the Apes theme month as we cover Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). Taking its new Earth-bound setting to the next level, the final two flicks in this franchise look to the not-so-distant future (which is still our present-day-past) as they tackle the '90s and beyond and start to lay the groundwork for some familiar settings. RIP to a favorite actor; Val Kilmer   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua was surprised how much fun the new A24 movie Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. It's not just a horror movie with a killer horse with a horn. There's much more to the story and themes of the film. Jay is still enjoying westerns with a variety of tellings of the same, classic story. Tombstone (1993) and Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). Inspired by news of Val Kilmer, Tombstone reminds us why this performance is so well loved. And Gunfight… spotlights the decade it was made with a different kind of interpretation. Check them all out and let us know how you like them.      Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay analyzes the first movie in the newest Planet of the Apes franchise. 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes started off as it's own story, not connected to the idea that the originals created. But it soon became obvious that it was much more complex. An interesting take on how those Apes could have come into power. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Not sure how more Planet of the Apes could possibly play out after the end of that last movie? Don't worry, that's a recurring theme for this franchise, but new sequels kept getting sold nonetheless — and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) is pretty much the king of the retcon. This flick manages to be both funny and philosophical while holding a mirror up to its audience, and on our latest installment of PLANET OF THE APE-RIL, we're going retro as we reexamine this snapshot of the ‘70s.References:https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/why-escape-from-the-planet-of-the-apes-was-ahead-of-its-time/http://www.potamediaarchive.com/EPTR.htm
