Synopsis:  Why is the sexism at the heart of Trumpism taken so lightly? This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: Donald Trump has a long record of demeaning and berating women. He's also linked to Jeffrey Epstein and his name appears literally thousands of times in relation to what is arguably the biggest, sickest sex abuse scandal ever. So why is the sexism at the heart of Trumpism taken so lightly? In this episode, we look at how sexism functions in today's fascist resurgence with experts Nina Burleigh, Rev. Naomi Washington-Leapheart and Annie Wilkinson. Burleigh is a journalist, best-selling author, documentary producer, and publisher of “American Freakshow” on Substack. Rev. Washington-Leapheart is a minister, professor, and the first-ever Strategic Partnerships Director at Political Research Associates (PRA), a social justice research and strategy center founded in 1981 by the feminist political scientist Jean Hardisty. In 2025 PRA dedicated an entire issue of their journal to the relationship between gender and authoritarianism, with a lead essay written by Wilkinson. Hear what our guests are taking away from the Epstein story, why authoritarians are afraid of feminism, and how women's leadership poses such a threat to fascists. All that, plus a commentary from Laura on impunity in our times.“It's not just about a sex case. It's not just about the mistreatment of women, I'm sorry to say, because that's a big part of it. It's the underpinning of how Epstein maybe was operating. It's really about influence, foreign affairs, and the way the last 20 years of American foreign policy has played out.” - Nina Burleigh“The most unprotected women in the United States throughout our history have been Black women . . . It's sort of okay for a MAGA influencer to say that Black women have brains that process more slowly than any, and nobody challenges that.” - Rev. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS President Donald J. Trump christened 2026's Black History Month by using social media to post images of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's faces affixed to the bodies of apes. White House staff promptly deleted the posting, but it the images have been widely distributed and branded as an act of Racism. Gus T. noted that this is exactly 17 years to the February 2009 police shooting of Travis the Chimp. A Connecticut White Woman had her face ripped off by the monkey which prompted the fatal police shooting. The New York Post subsequently published a cartoon where the White officers suggested the dead chimp was the newly elected President Obama. In the nearly 20 years between these incidents, White employees of Google were forced to apologize for displaying images of chimps when users search for Michelle Obama. And the Planet of the Apes franchise rebooted and launched 4 more films. #MonkeyAround #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Launching a popular YA franchise, the film drops viewers into a mysterious, brutal survival scenario where memory, trust, and instinct are the only tools for escape. The story follows Thomas (Dylan O'Brien – Teen Wolf, American Assassin), who awakens with no memory in a massive maze surrounded by towering stone walls and deadly creatures known as Grievers. He's taken in by a group of boys called the Gladers, led by Alby (Aml Ameen – Sense8, Yardie) and strategic second-in-command Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster – Game of Thrones, Love Actually). Tensions rise with the arrival of the ruthless Gally (Will Poulter – Midsommar, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), whose belief in the maze's rules clashes with Thomas's instinct to challenge them. Comfort food and a bottomless snack bag for our season finale. Helena Bonham Carter is an award-winning English actress known for her incredible performances across films including the Harry Potter movies, Howards End, Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, The King's Speech and TV series such as Toast and The Crown. There are certainly too many credits to mention for a star who made her debut in 1985 in A Room with a View.  She's with us to talk about her latest role as Lady Caterham in Agatha Christie's Seven Dials, which starts streaming on Netflix from 15 January. This is her first time in a Queen of Crime adaptation, with co-stars including Mia McKenna-Bruce and former Dish guest, Martin Freeman.  Helena comes equipped with her sizeable snack bag, curated especially for her life on-set, but there's still room for Dish's first cheese toasties, featuring five different cheeses. The cheese toasties with sticky shallots are paired with the Loved & Found Feteasca Alba Brut, which sadly is no longer available to buy. The Waitrose wine experts have since lined up the perfect replacement; a glass of Valdo Elevantum Prosecco. For this episode, Nick, Angela and Helena also enjoy a Mother Root and tonic, alongside the many, many other beverages that make it on to the table.  From the perilous times on the set of Seven Dials to helping Helena overcome her rice intimidation, we finish up season 8 of Dish with a hearty serving of good company. There's a short break now before we return in February for more. Til next time!  You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify.  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish If you want to get in touch with us about anything at all, contact dish@waitrose.co.uk Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions Learn more about your ad choices. "We try to answer two questions before we say yes to a job or embark on a spec script: Why does the protagonist need this movie? And the other is: Why tell this story other than to make money? That was our attitude going into Jurassic World. That was our attitude going into Avatar," says screenwriter Rick Jaffa about how he and his writing partner Amanda Silver approach tackling a large film franchise.  On today's podcast, we sit down with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to discuss their blockbuster new film Avatar: Fire and Ash, the follow up to 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. Husband and wife, the accomplished duo have also written and produced some of the biggest and most lucrative movies in Hollywood history, including the Planet of the Apes trilogy and Jurassic World. They generously share their techniques for worldbuilding, including doing tons of research to help keep the world grounded in science and fact, and always starting with character. They also share their mind-bending pitch for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. "What we said was, we want to take an ape from Pinocchio to Moses," says Jaffa. Silver adds, "Pinocchio meaning,  I want to be a real boy – to Moses – and leading his people to the Promised Land. And that was basically the pitch."  They also describe creating the exciting new Avatar character Varang (Oona Chaplin), of the Ash People and how she magically came to life on the page. "At first, when you don't know this character at all, and it's just a piece on a playing board to move around for your plot, you're trying to figure things out. But soon they hopefully start speaking for themselves… And then once we started writing her, we got through the first scene with her, we looked at each other and said, 'My God, the world's going to fall in love with this character!'" says Silver.  To hear more, listen to the podcast.

This week, for Christmas, a heart-warming festive treat full of joy, goodwill and Peter Sellers at his cuddliest. ONLY JOKING.Actually, it's Carol for Another Christmas, Rod Serling's bleak, angry, Cold War reworking of A Christmas Carol . Conceived as the opening salvo in a run of UN-friendly TV specials, the film is a full-throated warning against isolationism, nuclear brinkmanship and the idea that minding your own business ever ends well. Xerox paid for it, ABC aired it ad-free on 28 December 1964, viewers and critics were divided about it, and it then disappeared for nearly 50 years.Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (Cleopatra) in his only television outing, the film stars Sterling Hayden as Daniel Grudge, a wealthy American industrialist who hates foreign aid, diplomacy and the United Nations in equal measure. On Christmas Eve he clashes with his liberal nephew Fred (Ben Gazzara) and is hauled through a series of visions featuring war dead, nuclear devastation and, most memorably, Peter Sellers as “Imperial Me” – a cowboy-Santa demagogue preaching radical individualism. It was Sellers' first screen appearance after his near-fatal heart attack earlier that year. Also featuring Eva Marie Saint, Robert Shaw, Steve Lawrence, Pat Hingle, Britt Ekland and music by Henry Mancini, the film is verbose, didactic and relentlessly grim – and all the more fascinating for it.Joining Tyler is Tilt Araiza (The Sitcom Club / Jaffa Cakes for Proust), drawing parallels with Planet of the Apes, The Prisoner and unpacking Serling and the social and political climate just one year after after the assassination of JFK... looking at how things came together to produce this Christmas curio.

We open with the shock of Carrie-Hiroyuki Tagawa's passing and step through the moments that defined him: a scene-stealing Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat, a gallery of elegant villains across 80s and 90s action, and a deep, steady practice in martial arts that prized control over violence. That contrast powers the story—how a performer built on breath, precision, and presence could turn wafer-thin dialogue into lines you still quote, then reappear years later with the same gravity reshaped into empathy. We dig into Tagawa's training in kendo and Shotokan under Masatoshi Nakayama and how that discipline informed his screen work. The conversation pulls no punches about typecasting and yellow peril tropes that lingered in Hollywood, from Big Trouble in Little China to network TV, and how Tagawa often transcended the parts he was offered. Along the way we revisit touchstones like The Perfect Weapon, Showdown in Little Tokyo, License to Kill, Rising Sun, Planet of the Apes, Tekken, and a surprisingly rich run in animation with Star Wars Rebels and Visions. Then we pivot to his quieter triumph: a measured, humane turn in The Man in the High Castle that proved his range extended well beyond menace. The final act explores a surprising chapter—Tagawa's late-life connection to Russia, conversion to Orthodox Christianity, and an articulated desire to serve and heal. In his own words, a true warrior carries compassion. Through that lens, the career of a “villain” reads as a masterclass in restraint, intention, and dignity, delivered over more than 150 screen credits. If you love film history, character acting, martial arts philosophy, or the craft of turning stereotype into substance, this one is for you.If this resonated, share it with a friend, subscribe for more deep dives on film legends, and leave a review telling us your favorite Tagawa performance.

In this February 2014 episode of the Aw Yeah Podcast, the boys slip on the boots for a free-wheeling pop-culture marathon they lovingly call “The Shoemaker.” A big celeb name dropping episode. It's one of those classic hangout sessions where every tangent is fair game and the laughs come fast. We kick things off revisiting Robin Williams' Popeye, the strange, ambitious, spinach-powered musical that still sparks debate decades later. From there, the conversation veers into the unforgettable era when Jamie Lee Curtis became the unexpected queen of “yogurt-helps-you-poop” commercials, and yes, everyone has opinions. The crew also digs into Jonn meeting Robert Vaughn, The Man From UNCLE and Artie's least favorite villian from Superman 3, the Rocky films, breaking down why the franchise still hits as hard as ever, and then jumps into a deep dive on the Planet of the Apes movies . Sprinkled throughout are some priceless Harry Caray stories, the kind that only this crew can tell, plus a lively discussion on John Romita Jr.'s take on Superman, what makes his version stand out, and why it grabbed fans' attention. It's loose, it's goofy, it's packed with memories and comic-shop energy. A vintage Aw Yeah episode through and through.

On this episode of The To The Outer Limits, we review  “The Sixth Finger.”Joining me are storytellers Gabriel Hardman, Jeff Parker, and Ande Parks.t's the story that dared to ask what happens when humanity fast-forwards its own evolution—and the answer, as usual, isn't pretty. Starring a young David McCallum years before The Man from U.N.C.L.E., this 1963 classic turns the lab experiment trope into a gothic tragedy, complete with telepathy, hubris, and a proto–Professor X look that must have haunted comic readers who saw it first-run. Joining me for the discussion are three of my favorite storytellers who know a thing or two about pushing human potential to the breaking poin Together we'll talk about the episode's influence on pop culture and comics—from McCallum's transformation makeup to its echoes in The X-Men, Planet of the Apes, and every “science-goes-too-far” story that followed.
