Tara is a repeat guest, and she first appeared on the podcast on episode 301 in April of 2023. Tara is a retired psychologist and now helps her son with his dog training business. She shares her journey with intermittent fasting, which she began in March 2022. Initially, she was motivated by the need for change after years of caring for family and constant travel. Tara has experienced significant weight loss, dropping 60 pounds overall, and found that fasting fit seamlessly into her lifestyle. Despite facing challenges like plateaus and stress, she remained committed to the practice, emphasizing the importance of adapting fasting windows to her daily life.Tara discusses the impact of life events, such as her husband's health scare, on her fasting journey. These experiences prompted her to prioritize her own health and well-being. She highlights the importance of listening to her body, adjusting her eating windows, and focusing on nourishing foods. Tara's story illustrates how intermittent fasting became a sustainable lifestyle rather than a quick fix, allowing her to maintain her weight loss and improve her overall health. For those new to intermittent fasting, Tara advises embracing the process as an evolution rather than a revolution. She emphasizes the importance of patience and self-compassion, encouraging listeners to enjoy the present moment and the gradual changes that come with it. By leaning into life's experiences and allowing time for the body to adapt, Tara believes that the journey becomes more rewarding and sustainable.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. She shares her journey into intermittent fasting, which began after she noticed a transformation in a woman she followed online. Initially skeptical, Rachel was intrigued by the focus on whole foods and mindset work, which led her to reevaluate her eating habits. She discovered that many foods she considered healthy were actually processed, prompting her to adopt a more natural diet. This shift not only improved her health but also changed her relationship with food, allowing her to enjoy substitutions without feeling restricted.Rachel discusses the importance of mindset in achieving success with intermittent fasting. She emphasizes that a positive mindset is crucial for long-term success, as it helps individuals approach fasting with a sustainable and healthy attitude. Rachel's journey included cutting out processed sugars and focusing on whole foods, which helped her become fat-adapted. This adaptation allowed her to extend her fasting periods comfortably, leading to significant weight loss and improved overall well-being. Rachel's story highlights the power of mindset and the benefits of listening to one's body.Rachel concludes with advice for new intermittent fasters, stressing the importance of trusting the process and embracing the clean fast. She wishes she had known earlier about the impact of a clean fast, as it made a significant difference in her journey. Rachel encourages others to try it for 28 days, as the experience can be transformative. Her story serves as an inspiration for those looking to improve their health through intermittent fasting, emphasizing the importance of patience, mindset, and self-discovery.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources.

I share what happened when I threw out the old coffee creamers and used the Yuka App to try to find a new one. The family is traumatized. I'm tickled. I think we're even, right? : )Laughing Matters features the end-of-the-month highlights and usually includes four segments: celebrations, libation of the month, rants, and questions and answers. Celebrations are about intentionally forming a habit of noticing and acknowledging the good within and around you. Libation of the month is based on whatever I fancy or feel inspired by at the time. Season 8, Episode 7 Alice du Parcq & The Philosophy of Perfume (herNEW BOOK!)This week we welcome back dear perfume pal and friend of the pod (star of twoprevious episodes), the multi-award-winning fragrance writer, presenter, contentcreator and now AUTHOR, Alice du Parcq!Alice has always been ‘on a mission to decode perfume in a fun, relatable andobjective way.' Now, added to her perfumed portfolio will be an incredibly gift-able (to self or scent-loving friends) book, created in collaboration with noneother than The British Library, called The Philosophy of Perfume. Out in October,we cannot WAIT to read it, and in this episode, Alice gives us a sneak peek atwhat you expect to find inside, plus the entire story of how the book came to be,and why she burst into tears in a library. We've even managed to wangle a must-sniff list of perfumes Alice has beenwowed by so far this year (not in the book, just a little scented extra to get youscurrying to smell them). We loved this warm, emotive, wide-rangingconversation and, as ever, could have talked to Alice for hours longer, and we sohope you enjoy this deep dive into one of the most hotly anticipated books forsome time...Some context about the British Library and this collection:‘The British Library has an in-house publishing division, and they have anestablished collection of around 18 books called "The Philosophy Of...". It's afamily of small giftable books that cover fun and whimsical lifestyle topics, suchThe Philosophy of Cheese, The Philosophy of Christmas of Gin, ofTattoos and of Houseplants, where an expert in that specific field dives into theorigins and evolution of that subject. In January, I was invited to do ThePhilosophy of Perfume and it will sit within this collection but as a slightlylonger and more standout format. It's out in October, in time for the giftingseason, and the RRP is £12.99.'About the book:‘The Philosophy of Perfume is a fun, warm, thoughtful and practical book allabout fragrance, which looks at its origins and how it's made, how we smell andhow best to shop for perfume. It is an adventure into the facts, folklore andfantasies surrounding perfume, delving into how it has evolved through the erasand decades as an artform, reflecting our cultural patterns through history. Inthe book, you'llmeet perfumers who share insights into their fascinating creativeprocess; you'll learn the science behind how we smell and the wild emotionalvoyage from smell to soul! There are tales of scented superstitions, and theliterary and historical figures who inspire perfume, plus the ways in which AI isimpacting the future of fragrance and a helpful guide on how to shop forperfume and find The One(s!). It was so important to me that this book was not for perfume experts, but forfragrance lovers of all ages who want a moment of enchantment laced withinteresting facts, a sprinkle of science and some practical guidance when on theirnext scent shopping safari.'Can't wait until October? You can see Alice talking live, interviewed by thewonderful Amanda Carr (founder of Barnes Fragrance Fair @barnesfragrancefair)at the Barnes Bookfest sat 26 th September at 6pm, and get tickets and moreinfo here: https://barnesbookfest.org/Fragrances Alice has adored so far this year:Pia Long's Olfiction Iconic (by name and nature! An utterly staggering vision of1980s department stores, expensive makeup and body creams – nostalgiapersonified)Botega Venetta's new Ulta collection (especially Bare Morning which Alicefeels is the longest-lasting most comforting powdery scent she's smelled foryears)Hellenist (all of them basically – a stunning house Suzy first saw at PittiFragranze, and which we all very much hope will be available in U.K. soon)Neal's Yard Remedies Mood Awakening Collection (Alice loved how truethese felt to the brand's ethos, and how they slotted so perfectly into their mostbeloved collections)Ode Ona (all of them, again – an exquisitely crafted and curated collection, allworth exploring)

He shares his journey with intermittent fasting, beginning with his upbringing in a religious household where he was expected to suppress his emotions. He describes how food became a source of comfort and how this led to struggles with weight throughout his life. Marvin recounts his early attempts at dieting and how he discovered intermittent fasting through podcasts during his long newspaper delivery routes. This discovery marked a turning point, helping him to manage his weight and emotions more effectively.Marvin emphasizes the importance of consistency in fasting, noting that it has been his greatest victory. He discusses how tracking his progress with tools like Happy Scale has motivated him to maintain his fasting routine. Marvin also shares insights into how his taste in food has evolved, preferring more satisfying and nutritious options over processed foods. He highlights the significance of setting small, achievable goals and how these have contributed to his overall success and well-being.Marvin's advice to new intermittent fasters is to start small and not feel ashamed if they can't go all out immediately. He stresses the importance of focusing on one's identity and living from that perspective, rather than striving for external validation. This approach, he believes, is crucial for long-term success and personal fulfillment.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. At a Fleischmanns street fair, a bottle with a bright red label and bold white type — Station Navy Strength Gin — stops Brett at the Skillers booth. Owner James Rooney pours a taste and explains why British sailors once needed their gin strong enough that gunpowder would still ignite if it got splashed with the stuff. That bottle leads to a drive up to Lexington, NY, to see where it's made.Skillers Mountaintop Distillery occupies a small pre-fab barn in what started as Rooney's ski house property near Hunter. Kaatscast walks us through some of the New York state laws that made a small operation like his possible — the Micro Distillery Act of 2003, which cut licensing fees enough to let small producers in; the Farm Distillery Act of 2007, which let distillers open tasting rooms and sell direct, the way wineries already could; and the Craft New York Act of 2014, which simplified licensing further and let farm distilleries sell in satellite locations. In exchange, farm distilleries have to source at least 75% of their ingredients from New York — Skillers uses 100% New York corn as the base for all three of its spirits, filling in the small remainder with botanicals like coriander that can't be grown locally. The three bottles get a full tasting. Greywacke vodka takes its name from the bluestone bedrock under the Catskills, and Rooney credits its stony, mineral edge to Schoharie Creek water that's filtered through that rock. The navy strength gin, bottled at 57% ABV, is built specifically to survive being mixed into a Negroni without landing flat. And horilka — a honey and chili spirit named for the Ukrainian word for flower (kvitka) — nods to the area's Ukrainian community, using local honey and an ultrasonic extraction process to pull flavor from Thai chilies.Gin-smith Jeff Graham describes running the still, watching a batch drip for hours to yield about 20 gallons at a time. Marketing director Todd Spire talks about the tasting room's weekend acoustic music series. And we learn that Skillers spirits are now on shelves at Elevated Wines in Hunter and behind the bar at Small Talk in Woodstock and Peekamoose in Big Indian. Next up: a Skillers Negroni made entirely in-house, which means Rooney is now considering his own line of vermouth.FeaturingJames Rooney, founder and owner, Skillers Mountaintop DistilleryJeff Graham, gin smithTodd Spire, director of marketingRic Rawlins, tasting guestMusic: "Growing Up Catskills" by Josh Roy Brown, from the documentary of the same name.

Acht Jahre Sicherheitshalber. The art world tells artists that if you just keep going, eventually something will break for you. But persistence can also keep you stuck. If you don't know something's broken so you keep doing the same thing, you won't grow. That's what happened to Gin Stone. Gin is a Cape Cod artist who did what she was supposed to do. She kept going. And she stayed stuck because she didn't have the right help. In this episode, she talks about the gallery show that made her realize she had nothing to say about her own work, the overhaul that followed, and the grant she landed just last week for a sonification project built on 2,000 years of geological data.   RELEVANT LINKS: Free Info Session, How to Get on a Museum's Radar, Tuesday July 21, 7:00 PM EST Gin Stone

Hayman's Gin: Tradition and Revival | James Hayman

This was recorded on-location at Bar Convent Brooklyn 2026Why This Episode MattersHow five generations of the Hayman family helped shape London gin and why James Hayman sees himself as a guardian rather than an owner. Why Old Tom gin is not simply London Dry with extra sugar, and how its robust botanical profile changes classic cocktails. How authentic sloe gin is made with wild blackthorn fruit, months of infusion and considerably more patience than its neon-red reputation suggests. Why rising costs may tempt spirits companies to compromise and why James believes tradition and quality are the family business's best protection.BanterMark Pascal and Francis Schott reflect on Bar Convent Brooklyn and Tales of the Cocktail as places where bartenders, producers and increasingly knowledgeable consumers come together to exchange ideas, discover new spirits and renew old friendships. They also observe that cocktail culture has spread far beyond major cities and debate whether anyone attending an afternoon spirits convention is realistically going to work afterwardThe ConversationRecorded at Bar Convent Brooklyn, Mark and Francis sit down with fifth-generation gin distiller James Hayman to explore more than 160 years of family history of Hayman's Gin.James recalls growing up around the family distillery, where the aromas of botanicals made an early impression and visits to bottle shops became part of family vacations. He explains the responsibility of protecting recipes and methods developed generations earlier while still allowing the business to evolve. The conversation traces gin's transformation from the rough, inconsistent spirit of eighteenth-century London to the more refined styles that emerged during the nineteenth century. James explains the origins of Old Tom gin, why Hayman's helped revive it for modern bartenders. They then turn to sloe gin: wild blackthorn berries, high-proof gin, several months of extraction and the British tradition of carrying a flask to cold-weather sporting events. Francis contrasts real sloe gin with the syrupy versions that once appeared in drinks such as the Red Death and makes the case for restoring the good stuff to the modern cocktail bar.James also discusses Navy Strength gin, the wonderfully questionable gunpowder story behind its proof and the family's determination to keep making gin in London without cheapening its process. The episode closes with a frozen Martinez so good that Mark and Francis briefly consider the practical limitations of employing a frozen bartender.Guest BioJames Hayman is a fifth-generation gin distiller and co-owner of Hayman's Gin, which he runs with his sister, Miranda Hayman, and their father, Christopher. The family has distilled gin since 1863 and continues to produce its London Dry, Old Tom, Sloe and Royal Dock gins using longstanding family recipes and methods. Timestamps00:00 Bar Convent Brooklyn, Tales of the Cocktail and the value of cocktail gatherings07:22 James Hayman joins Mark and Francis at BCB09:00 Growing up inside a five-generation gin family13:00 How London gin evolved—and the origins of Old Tom17:42 Real sloe gin, the Blackthorn cocktail and the Red Death23:38 Why American and British gin habits are so different25:00 Protecting quality when costs rise27:43 The story behind Navy Strength gin30:10 The freezer Martinez and frozen-bartender logisticsInfoHayman's Gin www.haymansgin.com/Bar Convent Brooklyn: Event information www.barconventbrooklyn.com/Email TheGuys@RestaurantGuysPodcast.com for cocktail recipesIf you want a chance to get two tickets to our Bourbon, Beer & Beefsteak and live recording with Sother Teague and Jack McGarry in New Orleans on July 21, 2026,sign up to be a Restaurant Guys Regular (our paid subscribers) here  https://restaurantguysregulars.buzzsprout.com/ Then email TheGuys@restaurantguyspodcast.com. Drupal core 11.4 delivers all that and more Module name/project name: Drupal core 11.4 Brief history How old: created on July 1 2026 by catch of Tag1 Changes Performance improvements When Drupal 11.3 was released, we talked about what a massive performance jump it represented, the biggest improvement in a decade. 11.4 has done it again! Database queries are reduced by half, across a range of requests due to optimizations in how entity fields are loaded. Overall, that represents a nearly ⅔ improvement for database and cache lookups on a cold cache compared to Drupal 11.0 or 10.6 Entity listing queries have also been refactored to use fewer table joins, reducing slow queries. Additionally, the link field introduces a resolvable_uri property and token, which returns a ready-to-use front-end link (like /#main-content) right out of the API instead of raw internal URIs, which will be a huge benefit for anyone using Drupal for decoupled and JSON:API-based use cases Applying recipes in Drupal 11.4 is significantly faster, reportedly twice as fast, and that includes installing Drupal CMS Drupal now supports Brotli compression, which should yield 15-25% better compression of CSS and JS assets Security Drupal 11.4 offers a new password hashing algorithm, argon2id, that will become the default in Drupal 12 later this year Also, the drupal/core-recommended package no longer strictly locks minor versions for critical dependencies like Guzzle, Twig, or Symfony Polyfills, making it easier to immediately receive important security updates Drupal's default robots.txt now blocks well-behaved search crawlers from indexing search queries, helping to solve a potential source of traffic overload on sites using faceted search Developer experience There's been a significant shift towards the adoption of PHP Attributes in recent Drupal releases, and 11.4 is no exception You can now define application routes directly within your PHP controller and form classes using the Symfony #[Route] attribute. This drastically reduces the need to jump back and forth into *.routing.yml files The new #[Bundle] attribute allows developers to define bundle classes directly, eliminating the need to write old-school entity_type_info or entity_type_info_alter hook implementations. All core .theme and .theme-settings.php files have been moved entirely to PHP classes. Support for legacy .theme files will be dropped in Drupal 13. Furthermore, dozens of core .module files have been fully converted into clean PHP classes Front controllers now leverage the symfony/runtime component to isolate bootstrapping logic from request handling, preparing the Drupal core architecture for advanced environments like FrankenPHP, known for its blazing-fast performance, among other features Drupal 11.4 introduces a native, extensible command-line tool (./vendor/bin/dr) built in partnership with Drush maintainers. This kicks off a transitional period where Drush commands will gradually be migrated to the core native binary Also, the new HttpKernelUiHelperTrait for kernel tests lets developers make mock HTTP requests and assertions without running the full Drupal site installer. This allows many traditional browser tests to be rewritten as much faster kernel tests Editor experience Drupal 11.4 includes the new Default Admin theme, a version of the popular Gin admin theme, now in core The Navigation module is now enabled by default, replacing the legacy toolbar CKEditor once again has a fullscreen button available without a contrib add-on, allowing editors to fully immerse themselves in a WYSIWYG element's content, great for working on long-format pieces Deprecations The initial 11.4.0 release actually removed a number of core recipes. They were since restored in an 11.4.1 release, but they are deprecated and will be removed from Drupal 12 Also on their way out are a number of modules, including Ban, Contact, Field Layout, History, Migrate Drupal and its UI, Search, Settings Tray, Shortcut, Telephone, Toolbar, and a flag module called layout_builder_expose_all_field_blocks. For themes, Claro, Stable 9, and Olivero are all deprecated, and will be moved from core. We'll include the meta issue about these deprecation in the show notes, and if any of these are important to you, it's worth tracking where they are on the path of moving to contrib

Despite multiple attempts and setbacks, Belle's journey reveals a powerful truth: the key to lasting change is understanding your own body and making honest, sustainable choicesIn this episode, Belle shares how intermittent fasting transformed her relationship with food and her body. She discusses her long history with weight struggles, from childhood dieting to lap band surgery, and how fasting and giving up sugar finally broke her cycle. You'll discover how she navigates special occasions like cruises, manages cravings, and uses simple tricks—like parking further away or tracking her progress—to stay aligned with her health goals. Belle emphasizes the importance of tuning in to your body's signals, avoiding diet obsession, and crafting a personalized approach that works for YOU.Gin and Belle break down practical insights including her experiment of one—trying different strategies until she found what truly sticks—and how the "quietness" of fasting creates space for self-awareness and honest self-talk. If you've ever felt trapped in the cycle of dieting, or overwhelmed by how to finally get control over sugar cravings, this episode offers hope, clarity, and a reminder: your body's resilience is greater than you think. Belle's advice to new intermittent fasters is to be patient, listen to your body, and trust the process, as reclaiming your health isn't about perfection—it's about patience, listening, and gentle tweaks.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. He shares how a Christmas trip and a growing awareness of his health concerns pushed him to make a change at the start of 2024. What began as a few days of fasting in solidarity with his daughter's medical prep eventually led him to Gin Stephens' books, then into intermittent fasting. He began on Labor Day of 2024 with the 28-day Fast Start Day by Day book. He explains that the early days were hard, but having a day-by-day roadmap helped him stay committed when his old habits and fears about hunger tried to pull him back.As Richard kept going, he lost weight, moved through plateaus, and started uncovering the deeper reasons he had used food for comfort, celebration, and convenience. He talks openly about a lifelong pattern of oversized portions, family food traditions, and the mental tug of wanting to “finish what's on the plate,” and how fasting has helped him break that cycle. A CGM also gave him a powerful wake-up call, showing him how certain breads, buns, and sugary drinks spiked his glucose and left him crashing, while simpler meals with protein and vegetables kept him satisfied much longer.Richard's story becomes especially encouraging in the way fasting has changed how he lives, not just how he eats. He's stronger, walking more, running in short bursts again, and even planning hikes and more joyful movement like dancing, because he wants fitness to feel fun rather than punishing. He closes with the advice that new intermittent fasters should jump in and start now, because waiting for the “perfect” time only delays the change they want.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. Initially skeptical about fasting, she decided to give it a try after seeing a photo of herself that made her realize she needed a change. Jeannie started with Fast Feast Repeat, and quickly noticed weight loss, dropping 11 pounds in the first 28 days.Jeannie shares how intermittent fasting helped her overcome various health challenges, including inflammation and allergies, and how it has become a sustainable lifestyle for her. Jeannie also discusses the importance of listening to her body and adjusting her fasting routine to fit her needs. She emphasizes the significance of non-scale victories, such as improved energy levels and reduced allergy symptoms, which have motivated her to continue fasting. Jeannie advises new intermittent fasters not to give up, as the journey may not always be easy, but the benefits are worth it. She encourages focusing on inner healing and being patient with the process, as everyone's body responds differently. Jeannie's story highlights the transformative power of intermittent fasting and the importance of finding a routine that works for each individual.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. She first heard about intermittent fasting in 2022 when she was working as a nutrition coach and one of her clients mentioned it to her. From that point on, she was an intermittent fasting dabbler. Finally, in October of 2024, she decided to stop dabbling and fully commit. Gin's phrase “Saturday is not a special occasion…it happens every week” spoke to her, and she knew it was time. Because of her long and varied diet history, Dee has stopped weighing herself. Instead, she goes by how she feels and the fit of her clothes. She is currently living her goal lifestyle, and feels good wearing a size 8 in pants. Dee is a self-described “logical vegan,” and she focuses on getting in nutrients from a wide variety of plant foods. One of her biggest non-scale victories is that she is no longer an emotional binge eater. She no longer has skin tags, which indicates that she has improved her insulin resistance. At the end of the episode, Dee reminds new IFers that Saturday is not a special occasion, and that they should explore all of Gin's resources, including the book 28-Day Fast Start Day by Day, which is a great way to get started on your IF journey.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources.
