She began her fasting journey in January 2022, inspired by a friend who practiced the 16:8 fasting method. Despite not experiencing rapid weight loss, with only a 21-pound loss over 18 months, Jayne emphasizes the non-scale victories she has achieved, such as improved energy levels, reduced need for thyroid medication, and better overall health. She discusses the challenges of menopause, and the importance of mindset in her journey.Throughout the conversation, Jayne highlights the significance of adapting fasting methods to individual needs, such as transitioning to alternate-day fasting (ADF). She shares her experiences with various diets and the realization that intermittent fasting offers a sustainable lifestyle rather than a quick fix. Jayne and Gin also discuss the impact of genetics on weight and health, and the importance of listening to one's body. Takeaways:• Intermittent fasting can lead to significant non-scale victories, such as improved energy and health, even if weight loss is slow.• Mindset and community support play crucial roles in maintaining a sustainable fasting lifestyle.• Genetics can influence weight and health, highlighting the importance of personalized approaches to fasting.• It's essential to eat enough during eating windows and choose nutritious foods to support fasting success. At the end of the episode, Jayne has three pieces of advice for anyone new to IF: 16:8 may not be enough for you to see weight loss, make sure you eat enough rather than accidentally over-restricting, and what you choose to eat to close your eating window can affect the next day's fast.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. She embarked on her intermittent fasting journey after being introduced to the concept by a friend in September 2020. Initially drawn to the health and wellness benefits, Lisa found that fasting helped her manage stress-related eating and maintain her weight more effectively. Although she didn't have a significant amount of weight to lose initially, intermittent fasting provided a structure that helped her navigate fluctuations due to stress and lifestyle changes. Over time, Lisa has experienced weight loss and weight maintenance, finding a balance that supports her health goals while allowing her to enjoy a flexible, plant-based diet.Takeaways:• Lisa started intermittent fasting after being introduced to it by a friend. She began with the "Intermittent Fasting Podcast" and found it aligned with her interest in health and wellness.• Lisa transitioned to a vegan diet before starting intermittent fasting. She experimented with her diet, including a period of increased protein intake, but ultimately returned to a plant-based diet, occasionally including eggs and some dairy.• Lisa emphasizes modeling positive behavior for her daughters, focusing on being a positive role model as a tall woman and encouraging them to make healthy food choices without emphasizing diet culture.• Lisa acknowledges being a stress eater and discusses how intermittent fasting helps her manage food intake during stressful times.• Lisa values the support and resources available through podcasts and communities, which help her stay informed and motivated on her health journey. At the end of the episode, Lisa encourages listeners to fast clean, and to keep track of their fasts/windows. She also emphasizes not to start ADF too soon and to listen to your body along the way.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. Tiffany is a project manager for cancer research educational programming specific to cancer immunotherapy. Tiffany shares her journey with intermittent fasting, which she began in January 2023. She was motivated by a desire to feel better in her body without the constant need for intense exercise. Tiffany discusses her lifelong struggle with rheumatoid arthritis, diagnosed at age seven, and how traditional medications with severe side effects led her to explore more holistic approaches. Through fasting, she has experienced significant improvements in her health, including reduced inflammation and fatigue, and a newfound sense of comfort in her own skin.Tiffany emphasizes the importance of real, whole foods and the impact of diet on overall well-being. She recounts her experiences growing up in a community that valued food as medicine and how this shaped her approach to health. Tiffany also highlights the emotional aspects of eating and how fasting has helped her establish healthier boundaries with food. She shares her active lifestyle, including hiking and daily exercise, and the benefits of metabolic flexibility gained through fasting.Takeaways:• Clean fasting can significantly improve energy levels.• Transformative health changes can happen at any age.• Personal struggles with health can lead to profound insights.• The journey to better health often starts with small changes.• Feeling amazing is possible after years of struggle. The episode concludes with Tiffany's advice for those new to intermittent fasting: be patient, focus on health beyond weight loss, and embrace the journey of self-discovery and wellness.Join Gin in the new Fast Feast Repeat app for The Grown-Up Year: 52 Weeks to Listen, Play, and Nourish, as well as a growing collection of intermittent fasting resources. She first heard about intermittent fasting in 2016, when a friend recommended Gin's work, but even though she was inspired by Gin's story, she didn't think intermittent fasting was for her. At 5' 4”, she was stuck at a weight set point of around 152 pounds, even though she could lose weight—but then she would go right back up to 152 pounds, and she didn't feel good in her body.In the summer of 2020, she started working out consistently, and her friend and trainer recommended intermittent fasting. She still didn't think she could do it—until one day in November. On November 11, she woke up and started fasting clean that day. She has been fasting ever since. She now weighs 122 pounds, and has lost the constant food noise that plagued her prior to becoming an intermittent faster. She is on a muscle-building journey, and at the age of 66, her daily eating window from 11-6 each day plus working out allows her to easily build muscle and she feels strong and also feels comfortable in her body. This week's book is The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow, the story of three sisters in 1893: Juiper, Agnes and Beatrice who are hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote, they must use their magic, their wits and alliances to find a way to survive. This led to such an interesting conversation about feminism, sisterhood, science, and lots of magic with this week's guest: Angie Hilliker!Angie Hilliker (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Richmond where she teaches undergraduates about the amazing molecular machines in our cells. She also has a research lab where she works with these budding scientists to understand how our cells regulate mRNA, the molecular recipes cells use to make proteins. She is always curious about something, whether it's something in the lab, in a book, exploring a hobby (including playing the flute and making pottery), or exploring something with her husband and son. When she isn't reading science papers for work, she likes to read fantasy, historical fiction and romance novels. In this Episode James River WritersUniversity of RichmondThe Sackler FamilyThe Poe Museum - RichmondAlly McBealThe Wayward Sisters:Herbal, floral, lightly sweet, and aromatic — like walking through a moonlit herb garden. Contains three major flavor components to represent the three sisters in the novel. Ingredients:2 oz Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice Gin (Represents the youngest, but the most intense sister, James Juniper)1 oz Bénédictine (made from 27 herbs, roots, etc.; a collaboration between a wine merchant and a chemist; represents the oldest sister Beatrice Belladonna, a scholar)1 tsp of chai tea simple syrup (represents the middle sister, Agnes Amaranth, hard worker, steady, sometimes maternal, like a bracing cup of tea)2 dashes of orange bitters (there is a lot of bitterness between the sisters, balances the sweetness of the simple syrup)Orange slice (so much better than lime… this is how G&T are often served in Scotland)Tonic waterInstructions:To make the simple syrup, heat 1 c. water, 1 c. sugar, and 6 chai tea bags over medium. Stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil and then remove from heat and let cool. Remove tea bags and store syrup in the fridge. Add the Gin, Bénédictine, and chai tea simple syrup to a shaker with ice. Shake well until chilled, about 15 seconds.Strain into a glass with ice.Add two dashes of orange bitters and squeeze in the juice from a slice of orange and drop the slice in the glass. Swirl or stir to mix. • 5. Top with tonic water to your preferred level and enjoy!

The conversation jumps from hair tension, sew-ins, and wigs to Sky Zone adventures, bedtime battles with little kids, and the very real exhaustion of parenting at every stage.Of course, they also get into reality TV mess — breaking down the latest drama on The Traitors, the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City reunion, and Married to Medicine (because whew). While Shakespeare was reshaping English drama, a parallel theatrical revolution was unfolding in Spain. During the Spanish Golden Age, playwright Lope de Vega pioneered the comedia nueva, a bold new dramatic form that broke classical rules in favor of fast-paced plots, emotional intensity, and popular appeal. In this episode, scholar and translator Barbara Fuchs shares how the theatrical innovations of Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Ana Caro Mallén de Soto, and others, including a three-act structure, blended genres, and complex female roles, helped redefine early modern theater and influenced the kinds of stories told on the English stage. Fuchs traces the rich cultural exchange between Spain and England and the work that she is doing now with Diversifying the Classics to bring plays in Spanish from both sides of the Atlantic to new audiences. Fuchs also discusses her adaptation for young audiences of de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, a powerful story of collective resistance, whichwill be featured at the Folger's Reading Room Festival on Saturday, January 24.
