Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture With Pride Month coming to an end, we figured there was no better time in our 2008 retrospective to revisit Gus Van Sant's "Milk," starring Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, and James Franco. Written by Dustin Lance Black and heavily influenced by the Oscar-winning 1984 documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk," the film, which was released after the passage of Proposition 8 in California, was met with a strong sense of urgency and deep passion at the time for its political relevance as well as its filmmaking. It went on to win Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and a second Best Actor win for Sean Penn, who garnered some of the best reviews of his career. Nearly 20 years later, how does the film hold up? Please tune in as Sara Clements, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Aaron Isenstein, and I talk about the film's screenplay, Gus Van Sant's direction, the performances, the editing, the film's awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Written and directed by Andrew Stanton and co-written by Jim Reardon, this adorable and prescient story about a lonely robot who falls in love and embarks on an adventure across the galaxy to bring humanity back to Earth 700 years after they abandoned it has endured since its premiere to become a modern classic. In 1977, former President Richard Nixon decides to break his silence. He agrees to an all-inclusive interview meant to confront lingering questions about his time in office, specifically the Watergate scandal that ended his Presidency. Sitting across from him is David Frost, a breezy British television host, who many mistakenly believe is not up to the challenge.

Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2008 retrospective continues with "Revolutionary Road," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Michael Shannon, Kathryn Hahn, David Harbour, and Kathy Bates. Directed by Winslet's real-life husband at the time, Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, and adapted by Justin Haythe from the award-winning novel by Richard Yates, this was considered a huge Oscar contender on paper before its release around Christmas time in 2008. Once it was released, it received mixed but still positive reviews, with most of the praise going to the acting of Winslet, DiCaprio, and Shannon, and eventually scored three Oscar nominations. Winslet, though, despite winning the Golden Globe and receiving BAFTA and SAG nominations, was Oscar-nominated for her other 2008 contender, "The Reader." How has the period domestic drama held up all these years later? Episode 137 - Pack your bags because we are headed back to the US of A. We recorded this on Memorial Day so Happy Belated Memorial Day everyone. For this week we watch and discuss a complicated figure in our nation's history; Richard Nixon. Frost/Nixon is a 2008 historical fiction directed by Ron Howard. It is a dramatized account of the legendary interviews of the former president Nixon by David Frost. And just as Frost and Nixon went four rounds together face to face, we all debate this film... all except for Marco who watched the wrong film again. But of course he came with opinions.Tune in for this conversation devoid of technical difficultiesAnd tune in next week for our last week of this month when we watch and discuss Vice (2018). We will also find out what we are watching next month.email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com
My guest this week is the actor Oliver Platt. You know him from The Bear, Chicago Med, The Three Musketeers, Beethoven, The West Wing, Frost/Nixon — honestly, the list goes on forever. He's one of those rare actors who somehow exists in every lane at once: beloved by movie people, television people, theater people, and apparently menswear guys too. We talk about growing up as the son of a diplomat, moving from Hong Kong to Japan to Washington D.C., discovering acting as a survival mechanism, early days in New York with Stanley Tucci and Hank Azaria, body image, GLP-1s, Paul Smith, Japanese denim, heritage workwear, and why sometimes you need to “give yourself the fuzzies.” * Sponsored by Bezel - the trusted marketplace for buying and selling your next luxury watch Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Episode 136 - Pack your bags, we are headed to the Soviet Union under the rule of Joseph Stalin. This week we watch and discuss The Death of Stalin (2017), a dark comedy about the death of Stalin (it's not just a clever name) and the ensuing struggle for power amongst his underlings. DISCLAIMER: This episode we had some technical issues due to internet issues. As result there may be some jumps in conversation and points where the conversation does not synch up well with some us talking over each other. We apologize for this but wanted to put it out anyway in the best form we could. SO enjoy the best you can. Next week we watch and discuss Frost/Nixon (2008)email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com

Brian Parry is a veteran Chicago-area actor with several decades of experience, currently retired but staying active in the performing arts through his long-standing membership with Redtwist Theater on the city's north side. He was drawn to play Hercule Poirot in Deerfield Theater's production of Murder on the Orient Express because it represented a rare, bucket-list opportunity, a role he felt uniquely suited for given his naturally deep, distinctive voice and age. Brian shared highlights from his career, including standout performances as Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman, Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon (which moved a Watergate attorney to sympathize with Nixon), and his role in The Cripple of Inishmaan. He also recalled the joy of watching his young son perform in Les Misérables on Broadway. He expressed optimism about live theater's future in the face of AI, arguing that the irreplaceable human tension of a live performance — the possibility that something could go wrong — is something no AI can replicate.Performances at Caruso Auditorium, 1801 Montgomery Rd., Deerfield on:* Thursday, April 9 at 7:30pm* Fridays, April 3 and 10 at 7:30pm* Saturdays, April 4 and 11 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm* Sunday, April 12 at 2:00pmDeerfield TheaterPurchase TicketsWe're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make our upcoming shows a success! Today, I'm thrilled to announce my interview with theater veteran Kate Jennings Grant. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary career, including the secret to her role in PROOF, a full-circle moment with GUYS AND DOLLS, working with the late, great Mark Brokaw and Linda Lavin on THE LYONS, a tip from Vanessa Redgrave, why Christopher Durang wanted her to play the lead in THE MARRIAGE OF BETTE AND BOO, meeting her husband Doug Hughes during BEARD OF AVON, starring in tours of APPLAUSE and FINIAN'S RAINBOW, how Wendy Wasserstein gave her her screen debut, why she loves singing Stephen Sondheim's music, the notes George C. Wolfe gave her during RADIANT BABY, the joys of co-starring with Wendie Malick in BLITHE SPIRIT, why she turned down SPAMALOT, the injury that caused her brief leave from OLD FRIENDS, the intensity of co-starring with Glenn Close in MOTHER OF THE MAID, coming out of the pandemic with MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, researching her role as Diane Sawyer in FROST/NIXON, what she learned from Tammy Grimes during A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, why NOISES OFF was like training for the Olympics, and so much more. Don't miss this open conversation with one of Broadway's best.
As a follow-up to her beloved '80's cult class Valley Girl, director Martha Coolidge delivered another beloved cult classic two years later with this science-based (sort of) campus comedy starring the late, great Val Kilmer in one of his earliest roles as the wisecracking titular genius Chris Knight. Knight has been tasked with building a laser by his duplicitous professor (William Atherton) though at least he has help in the form of the latest young genius to be recruited to the fictional Pacific Tech - that would be Mitch Taylor played by Gabriel Jarret (Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon) who's definitely in over his head away from his parents for the first time in his life and the ripe young age of 16. Chris has to show Mitch the ropes, they both learn from each other as they work to build that laser, and hijinks ensue! Wilfred Frost is the host of Sky News' breakfast show, a frequent contributor on CNBC, and can now add podcast host to his resume, too. These roles have a few things in common, but the most important throughline for Wilfred is how they allow him to flex his favorite muscle – interviewing. On this episode of Press Profiles – live from Wilfred's home turf in London – we explore the art of the interview and what he learned about it from a pretty good role model – his dad, David Frost, legendary journalist of "Frost Nixon" fame. Among many other things, Wilfred tells us how his father taught him the importance of having a genuine interest in people and how he channels that in his own work. We also discuss his circuitous path to journalism, his favorite restaurants from London to NYC, his dream interview guest, and why he feels lucky to have a job that he loves.

Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds, The Alienist) earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Niki Lauda, showcasing the driver's steely discipline and resilience—especially in the aftermath of the horrifying 1976 Nürburgring crash that nearly cost him his life. Olivia Wilde (Don't Worry Darling, House) plays Suzy Miller, Hunt's model wife whose relationship becomes strained amid fame and obsession. Key moments include the gripping recreation of Lauda's near-fatal accident, the intense final race in monsoon conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix, and the emotional reckoning between the rivals as they come to respect each other's passion and purpose. With breathtaking racing sequences, sharp character contrasts, and emotional depth, Rush is not just about the sport—it's about the psychology of greatness, ego, and survival. The 2008 Best Picture line up had some heavy hitters that are still on people's lists of their favorite movies of all time. So when we saw a legal thriller smack dab in the middle of the stacked season, we were skeptical. However, Tony Gilroy's tight script and directorial debut, Michael Clayton, had us on the edge of our seats from the moment Tom Wilkinson's voice over started until we sat in disbelief in the back of the cab with George Clooney. Join Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson as they soar back to the Man of Steel's world in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (2006). After a five-year absence, Clark Kent / Superman (Brandon Routh, Dodgeball, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) returns to Earth only to discover that his love, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth, Blue Crush, 3000 Miles to Graceland), has moved on—and even has a young son, Jason. As Clark grapples with heartbreak, he uncovers a nefarious plot by Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) to use stolen Kryptonian technology to reforge the world in his image. Rounding out the stellar cast are James Marsden (Cyclops in X-Men, Enchanted) as Lois's fiancé Richard White, Parker Posey (the “Queen of Indies” in Party Girl, Best in Show) as tabloid editor Kitty Kowalski, Sam Huntington (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) as earnest photographer Jimmy Olsen, Frank Langella (Oscar-nominated for Frost/Nixon) as Perry White, and Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar, Designated Survivor) as Richard's brother, Stanford White. The film adaptation of this stage hit, proved to be a powerhouse. The performances by such a stacked cast were phenomenal and led by the actors who brought down the house night after night on Broadway. Frost/Nixon succeeds because it keeps itself boxed in. It doesn't linger, or expound in unnecessary areas. We found watching this during the political climate to be an added layer to the experience. What did you think of the girl fight Frost/Nixon? Your editor's lined up the interview of a lifetime! You're gonna win that emmy but for journalists, a Pulitzer Prize? Weird to call something we give out to people that do a good job at journalism a prize like it's something you won at a carnival handed out by a clown. Anyway, forget Frost/Nixon it's you/a vampire! What an incredible get! You get to sit down and talk to some old guy who spent most of their lives as a shut in except at night. What was it like during the war vampire? What's that? Spent it asleep? Oh how interesting. Want me to describe the sun for you? Christ you suck. The next time your editor asks you to go interview a vampire, be firm in your response and say "no. I do not want to." Our Presidential Series continues with the sly, tense Frost/Nixon! Based on Peter Morgan's award-winning play, Ron Howard's film examines the real story of David Frost's landmark interview series with disgraced President Richard Nixon. Both men enter this story with something to prove: Frost seeks improve his reputation as a carousing, boozy entertainer, while Nixon wants to repair his legacy and come out looking more presidential. How much of this movie resembles reality? What was its lasting impact? How does it pertain to our currently fractured political climate? You'll get all those answers and more in this episode! We talked about a caller named Brady who called in from California last week. We also took a call from a guy who saw Joe DiMaggio play a game and then met him at a restaurant after the game. The ‘Go Buchanan Go' guy got passed Al this morning. Jerry returns for an update but first we have a classic call from the ‘Go Buchanan Go' guy called Russo and Malulsis when they were on remote. Jerry starts with the Yankees beating the Guardians behind 2 Judge home runs and another from Soto. Brandon Tierney was filling in for Suzyn in the booth last night. The Mets beat the Orioles on a walk off HR by Jesse Winker. Rob Saleh talked about their joint practice with the Giants. Sauce Gardner commented on Daniel Jones that is getting headlines for some reason. The Broncos announced Bo Nix as their starting QB. The Giants passed on him and Michael Penix in the draft. In the final segment of the hour, we played a clip of Theo Von talking to Donald Trump about cocaine. Gio compared this to Frost/Nixon.
Hour 1 Gio thinks the steroid era has ruined the great season that Aaron Judge is having. He's doing things we haven't seen since the steroid guys, but because we've seen the steroid guys, we've seen this happen before. Gio also can't believe how much the NFL has grown and MLB has fallen since 1998. Gio doesn't think Aaron Judge's historic season is being covered properly by the national sports media. Jerry is here for his first update of the day but first we talked about trying to get Jerry the Knicks play by play job. Jerry started with the Yankees as Judge homered twice and Soto also homered. Brandon Tierney filled in for Suzyn last night. Jerry plays, ‘What the hell was that?' It's an excited Evan Roberts on the Mets walk off HR. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer has gifts for Gio from a golf course in NJ. The overnight caller, Brett on Long Island, got under the skin of Al Cintron who hosted overnights last night. Gio said Brett has a skill to get under every hosts' skin. Gio called him a ‘Top 5 most annoying caller'. Hour 2 We talked about a caller named Brady who called in from California last week. We also took a call from a guy who saw Joe DiMaggio play a game and then met him at a restaurant after the game. The ‘Go Buchanan Go' guy got passed Al this morning. In the final segment of the hour, we played a clip of Theo Von talking to Donald Trump about cocaine. Gio compared this to Frost/Nixon. Hour 3 Boomer said this season will be Daniel Jones' ‘career moment'. He needs to have a year with 35 TDs and 10 INTs. Boomer thinks the schedule is set up for him to get off to a great start and he hopes they continue to throw the ball downfield like they've been doing in the preseason. Sauce Gardner seemed to have a hard time describing what he thinks about Daniel Jones as a quarterback. We talked about some of the worst coaches hired in NY since 2017. A caller did not like the Jesse Winker celebration after the walk off HR yesterday. Jerry returns for an update and starts with a caller named Brady from last week when Al was out. Jerry has audio of the Yankees beating the Guardians behind 2 Judge and 1 Soto home runs. Jerry has the call from Gary Cohen as Jesse Winker hit a walk off HR as the Mets beat the Orioles. Daniel Jones and Malik Nabers talked about practicing with the Jets yesterday. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Jets fans expectations and how in the back of their minds, they are always waiting for things to turn sour. Hour 4 Bo Nix was named the starter in Denver and Boomer commented before how the Giants passed him over. Gio asked him about that. Gio is not so sure that Bo Nix is the next Drew Brees for Sean Payton. Boomer thinks the rookie quarterbacks should sit for 6 weeks. Gio thinks New England is the worst team in the league with the Raiders right behind them. The Panthers are also terrible. We went over a bunch of over/under win totals for various NFL teams. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Yankees beating the Guardians with two Judge homers and a Soto shot as well. Evan Roberts was on the air when Jesse Winker hit his walk off HR and Jerry had the audio. The Moment of The Day involves Al getting fooled by the ‘Go Buchanan' guy for the first time ever. In the final segment of the show, there is a promo running on the station that is teasing something coming to Evan and Tiki.
Geoffrey Blake is an Emmy nominated, two-time SAG Award winning actor best known for his role as 'Wesley' (the abusive radical boyfriend) opposite Robin Wright's 'Jennie' in the iconic Academy Award Best Picture Forrest Gump. In addition to that film, he has appeared alongside Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks in multiple films. Those performances are part of his frequent collaborations with such Academy Award winning filmmakers as Robert Zemeckis and Ron Howard (Forrest Gump, Contact, Cast Away, Appollo 13, EDtv, and Frost/Nixon.) His most critically acclaimed performance was that of the preppy pipe-smoking astrophysicist 'Fisher', the right-hand man, in the Sci-Fi classic Contact opposite Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. Blake has well over 100 credits to his name in both television and film. In the 1980's and early 1990's, he frequently collaborated with friend and colleague, Emilio Estevez. The two met on the generation defining film Young Guns where he portrayed 'McCloskey', the Young Gun snitch, opposite Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Dermot Mulroney. He would go on to make four more films with Estevez as both an actor and director (Men at Work, Rated X, The War at Home, Nightbreaker). He also worked with other luminary filmmakers such as Ridley & Tony Scott (The Man in the High Castle, Enemy of the State), Paul Mazursky (The Pickle), Frank Darabont (Mob City), Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog), Roland Joffe (Texas Rising) and numerous others. In addition, he has appeared in a multitude of Emmy Award winning series, mini-series, and movies for television with prolific content providers such as Steven Bochco, David Milch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Shonda Rhimes, David Shore, Paul Attanosio, Don Bellisario, and Dick Wolf, repeatedly reaching out to Blake to be on their shows.
It's been 34 years since the stunning, untimely death of Jim Henson at the age of just 53. But, in the years since, Henson's creations (aka The Muppets) have continued their reign on “Sesame Street”, at theme parks and in the movies. Jim Henson's coterie of lovable characters is as present as ever. Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”, “Frost/Nixon”) takes on the legacy of the brilliant puppeteer and filmmaker in his deeply researched, playful and heartfelt documentary, “Jim Henson Idea Man”. Ron joins Ken on the pod to discuss how, years ago, a conversation with the late director Jonathan Demme spurred him on to start making documentaries, and why he finds it so challenging and rewarding. With his latest documentary, Ron has found a subject that both piques his curiosity and dovetails with some of the themes of his own life (early success on television followed by a successful career directing movies; the challenges of balancing one's passion for work with commitment to family; and the excitement of the next project that always beckons). The result is one of Ron Howard's most personal and fascinating documentaries to date. “Jim Henson Idea Man” is nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.
