Pastor Leyton Erickson concludes our series on Why Jesus?
John’s Gospel is full of characters who unwittingly play a crucial role in God’s redemption plan. Not the least of these featured people is Pontius Pilate. We all know Pilate’s role in the story of Jesus, but have we ever considered his motives? John gives us a look inside the mind of Pilate, as he faces tremendous pressure during the trial of Jesus. More so than the weight on Jesus’ shoulders, was the weight on Pilate’s as he mulled over what to do with Jesus of Nazareth. At first he reveled in watching the Jews beg for his help, but one particular accusation shook Pilate to his core. This accusation, which confirmed assumptions Pilate was already having about Jesus, caused him to face the ultimate decision. Does he remain a friend of Caesar or become a friend of Jesus? If Jesus was indeed who He was accused of being, and who Pilate was almost certain He was, wouldn’t it be the better decision to take His side? Friend of Caesar or friend of God? Which hill would he die on? *Apologies about the first 2 minutes of track. The audio is very low, but this was during the Scripture reading from John 19:1-7, so the message should be loud enough.*

Every person in the world faces the same question. What shall I do with Jesus? If Jesus is just another religious fanatic, failed leader, or martyr to a noble cause, then whatever you do is no big deal. If Jesus is who He said He is (God the Son,...
Every person in the world faces the same question. What shall I do with Jesus? If Jesus is just another religious fanatic, failed leader, or martyr to a noble cause, then whatever you do is no big deal. If Jesus is who He said He is (God the Son, Savior, Messiah) then every moment of our life and every area of our life has everything to do with Jesus. It changes how we think, speak and act. It forms how we relate to every other person in the world. The most basic answer to the big question is that we receive his offered gift of salvation, forgiveness and a personal relationship. What we do with Jesus transforms what we do in everything.
The truth is not always comfortable. In the passage from Matthew’s gospel (10:24-39) we look at today, Jesus unashamedly addresses a number of challenges that will confront the faithful disciple. What are we to expect as we seek to live as followers of Jesus? If Jesus’ coming does not bring peace but a sword, what are we to do? The found life will be lost and the lost life will be found?! These riddles point to a kingdom that is beyond our capacity to even imagine! As we follow Jesus the reality is revealed.
