In Matthew chapter 17 we focus on an event known as the Transfiguration. It occurs in each of the synoptic gospels - Matthew 17; Mark 9 verses 2-8, Luke 9 verses 8-36. It was a revelation of Jesus in transcendent glory. Its significance belongs to the Kingdom age. Our Lord Jesus Christ is resplendent in glorious white glistening robes. Mark tells us that this glory and righteousness surpassed that attainable by any person - this is telling us that the glorious and righteous character of our Lord was unique and sustained by God's workings. Our Lord Jesus was seen together with Moses (representative of the Law) and Elijah (for the prophets). But their glory was inconsequential when compared to that of our Lord Jesus Christ's. In addition to all of this was the commanding and imperious voice of Jesus' Almighty Father announcing to those Apostles, and to all, including us: "This is My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, hear him". After coming down from the Mount Jesus told his disciples that their failure to cure the epileptic boy was because their faith needed to grow and develop like a grain of mustard seed. After this Christ again told his Apostles of the great trials which lay ahead of Jesus. These sufferings would culminate in his offering on the tree and that on the third day he would be raised from the dead. Let us consider let us look at Peter's timeless commentary on the Transfiguration in 2 Peter 1 verses 13-20. Pause, and ponder and reflect.
After a few weeks away for seminary, Pastor Chris returns with a powerful message on what Jesus meant when He said, "I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it." This fourth message in our Summer on the Mount series dives deep into Matthew 5:17–20 and explores how Jesus doesn't lower the bar to make us feel better—but instead raises it to expose our need for Him.In this sermon, we confront the tension between outward righteousness and inward transformation. Jesus invites us to stop striving to earn God's approval through performance or image management and instead receive the righteousness that comes by grace. From recycled morality and surface-level goodness to spiritual ladders built on self-effort, this message invites us to lay it all down—and live from what Jesus has already fulfilled.Whether you're wrestling with legalism, pressure to perform, or wondering what real transformation looks like, this message will encourage and challenge you to live not from striving, but from surrender.
This is a selection of verses taken from the Sermon on the Mount (using an amalgam of translations), as well as a short verse from Matthew's gospel. The Sermon on the Mount is a collection of sayings spoken by Jesus of Nazareth found in the Gospel of Matthew (chapters 5, 6, and 7) that emphasises Jesus's ethical and moral teachings, as well as his profound insights into cause and effect (the 'Law' of karma). It is the first of five discourses in the Gospel and has been one of the most widely quoted sections of the Gospels.
When we live for the praise of men, we miss the power of God. Settling for the reward of people's admiration is a sad substitute for the reward God has for us. When we live to delight God and God alone, we discover His righteousness and His reward in our lives. Jesus is the prime example of this. He lived for an audience of One and received God's praise as His reward. We must confess our hypocrisy of seeking man's praise and lean on Christ for forgiveness and for the power to live in a new way.

Let's begin. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Jesus teaches about wealth more than any other topic...approximately 15%-25% of His teachings fall into the categories of money, wealth and possessions. This sermon asks the question: Do you have an eternal vision for your wealth? And, it provides the framework for the eternal implications for how that we use and think about wealth, possessions and money..

At the heart of the Sermon on the Mount is a message of love, compassion, and selflessness. Jesus encourages his followers to love their enemies, to forgive others, and to care for the poor and marginalized.

Early in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, he gives a clarification about his relationship to the Old Testament (the Law and the Prophets). He says that he hasn't come to abolish it, but to fulfill it. He also says that "every stroke of the pen of the Law" will remain "until heaven and earth pass away," and that anyone who teaches someone to break "the least of these commands" will be called "least in the Kingdom of God." We considered how we should understand Jesus's words and what they mean for our lives today.
Join us this week as Pastor Isaac preaches through Matthew 5:27-30, teaching on lust and guarding our hearts against sexual sin. The post Matthew 5:27-30; “The Sermon on the Mount: Jesus’ Teaching on Lust” appeared first on Immanuel Baptist Church.
Preaching Point: Christ's righteousness produces obedience from the inside out concerning all that Jesus commands and even comes with a warning to those who reject absolute obedience to the commands of Christ.Main Text: Matthew 5:17–20Teaching Points:Eradicate Legalistic Ideas of Righteousness V20Fear Invalidating Any of Jesus' Commands V19aDesire an Honorable Position in God's Kingdom V19bApplication Questions:Write down one helpful observation or application from this week's sermon. Read Romans 3:20 and Romans Romans 10:4. How does righteousness that is acceptable to God demolish any feeble attempt to gain favor from God outside of trusting in Jesus for your right standing with God? Read Matthew 5:19 and Matthew 28:18–20 (emphasis on v20). What are some consequences if Christians do not have a healthy fear of misrepresenting Jesus' teaching? Read Matthew 23:23–24. In what ways would the Pharisees have benefited if they had a healthy fear of invalidating God's commands? What can you do to keep from falling into the temptation of nullifying Jesus' commands?Read 2 Corinthians 5:10 and Matthew 19:28–30. Scripture is clear that honor in the Kingdom of Heaven has varying degrees based on how one responds to God's written revelation. With that in mind:Why is desiring an honorable position in God's Kingdom a good thing? How does this truth change how you see your daily life as consequential to eternity?Read Matthew 20:20–28. How can you keep from making the same mistake the disciples did in thinking you could even attempt to manipulate your way into an honorable position in Christ's coming Kingdom?
Preaching Point: A proper understanding of Jesus' relationship to the Law is crucial for believers to grasp the significance of the work of Christ and the usefulness of the whole Bible in the church's life.Main Text: Matthew 5:17–18 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.Teaching Points:Reevaluate Your View of the Old Testament v17aElevate Your View of Jesus v17bApply all Scripture in Light of Jesus v18Application QuestionsWhat is one observation or application you found helpful from this week's sermon?Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17. In light of Jesus' own admission on the significance of the Old Testament (Law), how are you reevaluating or building on your own view of the significance of the Old Testament (Law) in your life? Read Colossians 1:15–20 and Philippians 2:9–11. What changes can you make in how you think about Jesus that will help you elevate your view of Jesus in light of what Scripture teaches about Him? Read Colossians 2:16–17 and Hebrews 10:1. How do these verses and Jesus' words in Matthew 5:17–18 cultivate the expectation that learning the Old Testament (law) is beneficial to grow in your faith in Jesus? Why is learning about the “shadow” and the “Copy” of the ultimate realities found in Jesus from the Old Testament (Law) significant for providing confidence and assurance in God's never changing plan throughout history to make Jesus the center of worship?

This week, Pastor Cory Jones, is continuing our Sermon on the Mount series and looking at the Law of the Old Testament and how it applies to us today.
As we move through the next few weeks of teaching, Pastor Jon gave us a structural tool to understand what Jesus is doing. Jesus is not dismissing the Old Testament in any way, rather he is showing us the correct and true interpretation of some key Old Testament teachings - the deeper righteousness of Godliness. Jesus does this by first saying, “you have heard it said” (Old Testament teaching). Next he says, “but I say to you” (Jesus' interpretation). Lastly, Jesus gives us little steps or ways we can embody and apply these truths in our lives (obedience). Here is the pattern: “You have heard it said…” “But I say to you…” Little steps of obedience Jesus taught clearly on anger, but Pastor Jon helped us to see that this anger in view wasn't simply the anger you have that flares up every now and again (though we certainly aren't to be okay with being explosive people), but rather this is the type of corrosive anger that can fester and persevere over time. As Pastor Jon warned us, “anger is dangerous my friends.” We must be careful to understand and interpret our anger because it is such a strong emotion. Pastor Jon also shared with us that chronically angry people often times don't think they are angry - rather thy can be caught believing they are simply right all the time. Again, when we find ourselves feeling such strong emotions, we must take time to ask ourselves why. Perhaps one of the best ways we can work to understand and process our anger is to bring people - our trusted community - into our mess. You and me are some of the worst people at discerning & diagnosing our own heart/soul when we are in such heightened emotional states. We need our community around us to help us. This is so hard, and so vulnerable, but if we remember Jesus' words to us to be poor in spirit, we can approach this process with humility and hope - because the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are poor in spirit. Lastly, Pastor Jon was clear to point out that these teachings from Jesus on forgiveness are not to be abused to cover up things like abuse. To be reconciled is for things to be made right. Forgiveness does not mean there are no consequences. Anger can show up in ways like resentment, bitterness, irritation, grumbling, sarcasm, indifference, a critical spirit, competitiveness, abuse, envy, hatred, quarreling, sulkiness, etc. Where are the areas we can experience anger? The workplace? Family relationships or marriage? The Church? Our politics? We must remember, this type of anger has no place in the kingdom of God. May we be peace makers together.

Zach Varnell Continues our sermon series, Sermon On the Mount in Mathew 7:12-23 with this weeks message titled "Jesus' Gracious Warnings".
Jesus said a number of statements that today's religionists don't understand or outright reject. For example in John 14:6 he claims he was the only way, and the only truth. In Matthew 7:21 he said that not everyone who claims him as Lord will be acceptable to him, regardless of the good things they did. Hmm, that seems strange coming from a loving God. Then Jesus talks about building on the sand versus building on the rock. These are clearly connected. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Christ has what the world seeks...if only the world had eyes to see and ears to hear. The darkness that Pope John Paul II often called the culture of death can be overcome only by winning the battle raging in each individual human heart, what he called "the battlefield of the heart between love and lust. In the Sermon of the Mount Jesus said; "You have heard it said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you: whoever looks at a woman to desire her (in a reductive or lustful way) has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Mt 5:27-28).
