In this podcast, Pastor Justin preaches into how we must cultivate and exercise biblical faith in order to overcome opposition and step into breakthrough. Support the show
A lot of people think the Christian life is mainly about trying harder. We don't buy that, and this conversation with Pastor Justin explains why: if you don't understand what a person is, you'll misdiagnose what's wrong. We walk through biblical anthropology and the trichotomy of body, soul, and spirit, then contrast it with the secular assumptions many of us absorb without noticing. We talk about how Gnostic thinking still shows up today, especially in the way Christians confuse “the flesh” with the physical body. From Colossians to Genesis, we trace the logic of creation, the breath of God, and what actually “died” when Adam and Eve sinned. That leads straight into the meaning of being born again, who your Father is, and why the gospel is not “Jesus makes your life better” but “Jesus makes you new.”Then we get very practical. Using 2 Corinthians 10, we frame spiritual warfare as a battle for belief: strongholds are lies, speculations, and lofty thoughts raised against the knowledge of God. We discuss why recurring sin patterns often persist because we keep protecting a lie, and why repentance is not just saying sorry but changing your mind. We close by calling ourselves to turn the lights on, confront darkness with truth, and pray for real breakthrough.Subscribe for more theology you can actually use, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find it. In this podcast, Pastor Justin preaches into the necessity of us having the fear of the Lord. Support the show
We love the idea of having friendship with God. But in order to be friends with God, we need to have something else first: fear of Him.In this message, Pastor Justin explains why the fear of God isn't about being afraid, but instead, living in real awe, honor, and reverence of the grandiose of God.By looking at moments like Mount Sinai, and the final chapters of Job, we'll discover how making God too casual, (or too small) leads to missing His presence, His friendship, and ultimately, His favor.
In this message, Pastor Justin dives into the deep-seated fears and spiritual underpinnings of our relationship with money. He uses the cautionary tale of the film The Ballad of a Small Player to contrast a life of "folly" with a life of "wisdom".Justin argues that a "mediocre message on money" usually boils down to "debt is dumb, giving is good," but fails to transform the heart. Instead, he points to Proverbs 1:7, explaining that the "Fear of the Lord" (Yirah) is the beginning of true knowledge. This isn't a dread of punishment, but a posture of awe, respect, and alignment with a God who is real, weighty, and worth obeying.Subscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Download a copy of the Exodus JournalVisit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.comSubscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Visit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

Faith isn't just how you start your relationship with God... it's how you live it. In this message, Pastor Justin challenges the idea of earning approval through effort, and points instead to a life of steady, ongoing faith. Through the example of Enoch, we're reminded that what pleases God most is a life that keeps walking with Him, trusting Him, and staying close over time.

Even for followers of Jesus, life can feel empty. We can look at our house, family, or health, and know from the outside, everything seems okay... but on the inside, we feel an emptiness. In this Easter message from the book of John, Pastor Justin explains that believing facts about Jesus isn't the same as experiencing Him. We can believe that the tomb is empty, but it isn't enough. We need to ENCOUNTER the risen Jesus! And that encounter is what can fill the emptiness you may be wrestling with today.

In week three of Visio Divina, Pastor Justin LaRosa reflects on the story of Lazarus in John's Gospel through Caravaggio's powerful painting The Raising of Lazarus. The scene is full of shadow, grief, and tension, reminding us that resurrection often begins in the middle of pain, not after it disappears. Jesus meets Martha in protest, Mary in tears, and stands before the tomb calling Lazarus by name. This story asks what resurrection looks like in our lives right now. God does the raising, and the community helps unbind us as we step into the light.Reflection Questions:1. Share an experience when you had a Mary/Martha moment.2. What protects you from pain/suffering but also prevents Jesus from entering?3. Where might God be inviting you to help unbind someone else?Find out more at HydeParkUMC.org/NextSteps
