Premium Episode 43: Gold Bugs and Survivalists feat Karl Mamerhttps://www.patreon.com/posts/premium-episode-111096234 In that episode, Jules and I put forward the idea that Cold War fears about a nuclear holocaust combined with the post WWII super boom economy created an anxious tension that rippled though US culture—specifically White culture in the US. This is a society that was reading articles in Popular Science with titles like “If Your House Were A-Bombed”. https://www.flickr.com/photos/x-ray_delta_one/3882775649/in/album-72157622015478740/ It wasn't just nuclear war that was squeezing people's imaginations. After WWII, pretty much every aspect of life had been altered for huge numbers of people in the US. The US went into that war flying bi-planes and came out of it with jets, rockets, and nuclear bombs. All that sublimated anxiety can't stay contained. One of the ways it burbled up to the surface was in movies. That brings us to the 1971 post-apocalyptic fantasy, Omega Man starring Charlton Heston, Anthony Zerbe, and Rosalind Cash and directed by Boris Sagal. In the hallowed tradition of Anna Sorokin and former US representative George Santos, and all the other people claiming to be something they're not, there's a thriving class of people claiming to have royal blood. Like the guy from Colorado who claimed to be the King of England, or the other guy from Maryland who claims to be King of the Isle of Man, and essentially everyone who's ever claimed to be a Romanov. We're talking about a few of the greater and lesser known fakes and frauds. Leading us on our tour of pretenders to thrones, we're joined again by Karl Mamer host of the Conspiracy Skeptic podcast and author of The Skeptic's Book of Lists. Now he has a new book: The Conspiracy Skeptic's Book of Lists: Conspiracies, Deception, Lies, and the Invisible Made Visible. This is part one of our conversation with Karl. This week the gang gets together and talks about that great Kentucky tradition: mine disasters. Wes relays the story of the strange encounter with the Belva Mine Lumberjack (aka The Flannel Man) during the 1945 Belv No. 1 Mine Explosion, then Kate transition into more mundane but still notable and tragic historical mine disasters. They also recount dumb stories of their fathers' coal mining careers. Wes may have to go on a road trip because of an old newspaper cover posted on the internet. Check out gendisasters.com to research your own home town's history. This week I'm joined by Karl Mamer to discuss the data behind three well known urban legends. Did a large blackout in New York and surrounding areas result in a baby boom nine months later? Do subliminal messages affect our behavior? Is placing beer alongside diapers a recipe for generating more revenue than these products in separate locations? Listen as Karl and I explore these claims.
Karl Mamer, of The Conspiracy Skeptic, confronts Gene and David with his disbelief in the strange and unknown. You’ll also hear a reality check from long-time researcher Jim Delittoso with regard to his comments about a photo allegedly featuring former Vice President Dick Cheney observing a UFO at a secret military base.
