In today's podcast, Dave shares two fascinating novels written by independent musicians: Nobody's Empire by Stuart Murdoch and Devil House by John Danielle. Nobody's Empire by Stuart Murdoch follows Stephen, a young Glaswegian diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, as he navigates isolation, creative awakening and spiritual longing. Feeling trapped by illness, he forms bonds with fellow sufferers and eventually journeys to California in search of healing — and a new sense of purpose. https://fvrl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S21C1941137 Devil House by John Darnielle follows true-crime author Gage Chandler, who moves into the house where a gruesome double murder occurred during the 1980s Satanic Panic. As he investigates, he becomes entangled in a morally fraught narrative, questioning the ethics of storytelling, memory and the distance between sensationalism and real human lives. https://fvrl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S21C1857996
Why were more than 12 thousand cases of satanic abuse brought in the 1980s? Was the Prince of Darkness walking among us then? Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch and Matt Shoemaker, whose new book, Gathering of Gamers: Dungeons & Dragons and Other Games Through Gen Con, is available now through Play Story Press (https://playstorypress.org/books/gathering-of-gamers/). If you're interested in the history of North America's largest gaming convention or the history of Dungeons & Dragons, this is the book for you!Matt joins us for the conclusion of our look at Patricia Pulling and her personal war on Dungeons & Dragons during the 1980s. We look at the impact of her message on the news media as well as the growing body of critics who made the radical suggestion that maybe there wasn't a vast network of satanists operated undetected in the United States (shocking, I know) and that maybe Pat was less than up front about her claims.Topics discussed include: how does Geraldo Rivera keep getting work, Richmond's Satanist-Methodist ratio, the question of whether Pat knew her son was turning into a werewolf, and the salacious indiscretions of one of Pat's closest allies.Read Michael Stackpole's Pulling Report here: https://rpgstudies.net/stackpole/pulling_report.html.If you're looking for another well-researched epic takedown of the 1980s Satanic Panic, check out: Robert D. In 1971, Go Ask Alice shocked parents across America - marketed as the real diary of a teenage girl swallowed alive by drugs, addiction, and death. Terrified moms and dads bought the book by the millions, used it to police their kids, and fueled a cultural panic that helped justify the War on Drugs. But there was just one problem: the entire book was a lie presented as truth...Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious PrivateFacebook Group? They told us fantasy games were dangerous, but reality was the real cult. In Episode 8, Gavin looks at how the Satanic Panic became a rehearsal for today's culture wars — a simulation of evil that kept us from noticing the system running the show.Featuring dark humor, theory, and a touch of absurdism, this episode dives into the spectacle of fear, nostalgia, and control that defines our era.Park Bench Ontology — “Simulation / Spectacle: The Real Satanic Panic.”

Content warning: We talk about child abuse as part of our discussion of both the 1980s "Satanic Panic" craze in the history section, and extensively in the discussion of the movie itself. Send us a textI can still remember the first time I stood in front of a classroom filled with my peers. I had spent the time researching and learning, writing and organizing, and now it was time to teach. A dozen of my co-workers, people that I spent hours with, ate lunches with, and worked with every day. But this was something different. Standing in front of the classroom. All eyes on me, the looks on their faces were somewhere between anticipation and boredom. I could almost see their thoughts, “Why do I have to be here?” “Why should I listen to this guy?” “This is going to suck.”I remember telling myself, It's no different than running a game, Steve. Grab their attention, make your point, and give them what they came for.I've been doing that now for over 25 years.I wasn't born a good communicator. I stuttered as a child, and because of that I was not outgoing in the classroom. I rarely asked questions and would damn near run away screaming when it came to making any kind of public statement. But when I would sit down and roleplay with my friends, that changed. It was like I was a different person. I was able to communicate and I wasn't scared. I actually enjoyed it. Soon I would become the forever game master and that just meant more practice. Because that was what it was, practice.I know for a fact if I didn't roleplay I wouldn't be a national instructor today. That class with 12 people in 1999 was only the beginning. I have done 2-hour presentations to auditoriums with over 1200 people. All of those hours of gaming and communicating gave me the skills and confidence I needed for my future. We can learn a lot from roleplaying.Last time, Mike and I talked about the Satanic Panic and all the things the haters said was wrong with roleplaying so today, Mike, Dr. Christina and I are going to talk about all of the good things you get by table top roleplaying.Let's start with you Mike, What's one thing that you can do today because of roleplaying?[Kick to Mike]Christina, you literally got your doctorate in this stuff so when we talk about the things we can learn from table top roleplaying, where should we start?[Kick to Christina]
On the summer solstice in 1990, a UCLA student with an interest in the occult was stabbed to death in a railway tunnel in the San Fernando Valley. Rumors of ritual violence swirled in the era of the so-called Satanic Panic. Police investigating the murder of Ronald Baker found his killers knew him well. One of them had even carried his casket.
It's still Halloween in our hearts! Enjoy this classic from last year and we'll be back soon with new episodes! This week we explore the depths of hair metal horror with the "Trick or Treat" from 1986. This classic from the Satanic Panic era has everything: A slasher villain with a set of pipes, Gene Simmons putting on his acting boots, and lots of weaponized electricity. We also help Shawn's friend Lard Humungus get to the bottom of his demon problem. And yep, this one has a quiz.

In the 1980s, AC/DC's biggest fan was a notorious serial killer. The band was an international best-selling hit machine, and members like the late Bon Scott and die-hard Angus Young became rock icons. But when the press caught wind of the disturbing fandom of the serial killer Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez, the news quickly dragged the world's most fun, pure rock ‘n' roll band straight down the highway to hell and into the center of a media firestorm around Satanic Panic and the inspirations of a murderer. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including graphic depictions of violence and sexual assault. “I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…” Ahhh, the 80's. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin' frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we're talking about the 80's here…) “I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…” Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening. Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer. One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”). Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne's 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80's, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists. If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over. Happy Halloween everyone!!! It's time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80's, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. In this episode of Terror Talk – Killer Minds and Creepy Stuff, hosts Shannon and Cathy ask the big question: Is the Devil still scary? From The Devil's Advocate to The Witcher and beyond, we explore how modern horror and pop culture have reimagined Satan — not just as a monster, but as a mirror of human fear, power, and faith.Join us as we discuss the remnants of Satanic Panic and unpack why belief in the Devil might still serve a purpose for some — as both rebellion and reflection.Of course, no episode would be complete without a little humor — Cathy's “Satanic Facts” trivia segment brings the laughs as we test our knowledge of infernal lore and devilish pop culture.Support the show on Patreon for exclusive deep dives, early access, and bonus discussions.Music by Mannequin UprisingFollow Us:Instagram: @terrortalkpodcastYouTube: Terror Talk PodcastFacebook: Halloween All Year Long

Even so, the narrative became embedded in our cultural memory, warping everything it touched — including the lives of innocent people… And it never quite died out.In a new 8-part series, Sarah Marshall (You're Wrong About) explores the tangled web of the Satanic Panic, in a journey that will take you everywhere from Victoria, B.C. to rural Kentucky to San Antonio, Texas. This is a show about the people who experienced the Satanic Panic in real-time — the believers, the skeptics, the bystanders, and the wrongfully-convicted. What was it like to be a psychologist told to look for Satanists in every case; a mother slowly recovering memories of supposed Satanic abuse; a teenager accused of conspiracy to murder? The stories of these eyewitnesses point us toward the real underlying problems — individual and societal — that the Panic was a response to. The fault, as ever, was not with Satanists, but in ourselves. You can find more episodes of The Devil You Know wherever you get your podcasts, and here: https://link.mgln.ai/TDYKxHW
Is it evil… or just excellent branding? This week, Amanda & Reese are joined by writer and podcaster Sarah Marshall (You're Wrong About) to descend into The Cult of Satanism: The spooky, sexy, misunderstood belief system that terrified suburban moms everywhere. We're talking devilish imagery, political theater, and the delicious irony of a religion that doesn't actually believe in the Devil. From Anton LaVey's campy theatrics to the Wayfair trafficking conspiracy, we're unpacking how Satanism became the perfect scapegoat for America's moral panic and how the real horror show was the Satanic Panic itself. So light your black candles, clutch your pearls, and prepare to sell your soul (metaphorically, of course). Because when it comes to culty influence, the devil's in the details.

Sarah Marshall is a writer and podcaster, best known as the cohost of You're Wrong About and creator of The Devil You Know, a CBC podcast series exploring the Satanic Panic which explores how a wave of moral hysteria in the 1980s fused pop culture, politics, and fear into an era where heavy metal lyrics and daycare centers became symbols of evil. In today's episode she and Amanda discuss why this moment still echoes today in new forms of conspiracy thinking, and how looking back helps us understand the stories we tell to feel safe—and the ones that turn us against each other. Foundations were laid in the 1970s that supported the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. The church fell prey to many scams and hoaxes over this period. Rather than exposing works of darkness and evil, the period of time actually harmed the church's reputation and aided the enemy's deception and schemes. Let's talk about how and why.
Listen its a bit ramble-y but serious question here: Are we in the midst of a new satanic panic? Is the war on Halloween friendly fire?
