What does it mean to be a true follower of Jesus? Most of us go through a lot of religious motions that leave us empty, or worse, we settle for our own sense of morality to give us confidence that we're a good person...Jesus offers us something much better. A changed heart that leads to a blessed life.STAY CONNECTEDhttps://newlifesouthcoast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/newlifesoco/
Welcome to Season 3, Episode 10! The Paper Tigers is one of our favorite Asian American movies. It's full of action, comedy, and a good dose of drama and deeper messaging. It's an award winning film that should be talked about more. In this episode's conversation, we get a chance to talk to Bao Tran, the writer and director of The Paper Tigers along with producers Mike Velasquez, of E3 Productions, and Yuji Okumoto, a veteran actor with over 100 credits to his name. Bao is also a successful editor, working on Cho Lon and Jackpot. Mike has worked as a writer, director, producer, and in visual effects. Yuji may be known for his role of Chozen Toguchi in Karate Kid II and Cobra Kai, but we loved him in Awesome Asian Bad Guys and True Believer. Bonus reason to like him. He owns the successful Seattle-based restaurant Kona Kitchen with his wife Angela. The chemistry, rapport, and respect Bao, Mike, and Yuji have for each other was apparent throughout the conversation. If you haven't seen The Paper Tigers, we highly recommend adding it to your watchlist. The significance of such an original film with a diverse, predominantly Asian American cast should be celebrated more. This is the story of a fragile democracy, a foreign sponsored coup, and a pirate radio station. On May 1, coinciding with the worker's holiday May Day, in 1954, Guatemalans found a new station on a previously unused band of their shortwave radios. Radio Liberación, the Voice of the Liberation, announced itself as a clandestine transmitter, broadcasting from a “secret place” within the Republic of Guatemala and reporting on the crimes of the communists. For this episode, we relied on extensive reporting from Sylvia Brindis Snow and Shane Snow as well as investigative reporting done by Stephen Schlesinger and Stephen Kinzer and published in their book Bitter Fruit and historian Nick Cullather's book, Strange History. Additional background research comes from David Talbot's book The Devil's Chessboard. In this episode, Chris welcomes back Tyler from the “Krypton Report: The All Things Kryptonian Podcast” to look at the second volume of one of his favorite comic book series, “American Vampire”. Scott Snyder reunites with artist Rafael Albuquerque and is joined by artist Mateus Santolouco to share art duties for this latest volume. It's Las Vegas circa 1935, and Skinner Sweet and our gal Pearl are about to learn the hard way that the bloodsuckers in Hollywood were nothing compared to what awaits them in Sin Ci.0y. In just a few short years, young police Chief Cash McCogan has watched his native city of Las Vegas go from cow-town to wild, glittering boomtown. And when the bodies of prominent businessmen start showing up drained of blood, Chief McCogan finds himself facing a threat much darker and deadlier than anything he could have imagined . . . and the only sure bet in town is that Skinner and Pearl are right in the thick of it. February 5, 2023 – Message from Pastor Josh Bevan Main Scripture Passage: Matthew 7:21-23 Topic: Believing Download SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
The True Believer is one who live by the word of God and the voice of God. Many times they are lead by God and don't know he is leading. Thinking this is a good idea but somewhere along the thoughts they see God is leading. The True Believer decided to let Go and allow Johovah to be the God of their lives and been allowing it so long it is automatic daily.Seeking God, delighting yourself in him, keeping our minds on him. Never telling others who we are only showing them who we are in God through his son Jesus Christ.

The law of attraction permeates the world of self-help and spirituality. In this magical world, everything you think you know about the causal nature of reality is wrong. All that you experience, all that you have and are, is a consequence of the vibrations that you attract. You don't have to explain the mechanism or prove the results, because it's all self-evident. If you don't get what you want, you just weren't wishing hard enough. And if you really want something, all you need to do is believe. Even if you've never heard the words “the law of attraction,” chances are you've heard the message from pop signers and film stars. Even Peter Pan knows this one weird trick to flying, “you think of a wonderful thought!” However, you've probably heard of the law of attraction from the 2006 film, The Secret. The messenger behind the message, Esther Hicks, got the idea from 100 ghosts, whom she calls "Abraham". Esther channels Abraham in seminars for her captivated audiences, records their sayings in books, and has also developed a signature cruise. Without The Secret, we wouldn't know Esther and her spooky friends, and without Esther Hicks, there would be no film. ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ For $3 a month, listen to the rest of this episode and get an extra few subscriber only episodes every month. In the past weeks and months, we've talked a few times about efforts to undermine public education. There are astroturf organizations that encourage protests at school boards and give support and talking points. Big money donors and foundations push for school privatization by support for voucher programs and so-called school choice initiatives. They're typically promoted as plans that give more “freedom” to parents. But ultimately, they sap funding from already strapped public schools, which can lead to school closures. The third leg of this stool are initiatives that promote homeschooling as an alternative to public schools. Not coincidentally, the parents that are most often looking for a way to get their kids out of public schools are the people who follow Libs of TikTok and demand that public school libraries remove books with LGBTQ+ characters. In this episode, we talk about the most extreme of the extreme homeschoolers, the pseudonymous Mr. and Mrs. Saxon. The Saxons operate the Dissident Homeschool Telegram channel, where they provide advice and support for parents trying to raise Nazi children. Recently outed by the Anonymous Comrade Collective, the Saxons, now revealed to be the Lawrences from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, are receiving national coverage. In this episode, Chris welcomes back Lisa from the "I Love That Movie" podcast to discuss the first volume of one of her favorite manga, “Battle Angel Alita”. Yukito Kishiro creates what many consider to be his magnum opus with this seminal manga series. In a dump in the lawless settlement of Scrapyard, far beneath the mysterious space city of Zalem, disgraced cyber-doctor Daisuke Ido makes a strange find: the detached head of a cyborg woman who has lost all her memories. He names her Alita and equips her with a powerful new body, the Berserker. While Alita remembers no details of her former life, a moment of desperation reawakens in her nerves the legendary school of martial arts known as Panzer Kunst. In a place where there is no justice but what people make for themselves, Alita decides to become a hunter-killer, tracking down and taking out those who prey on the weak. Originally premium episode 12, in honor of our upcoming field trip, we're releasing our full conversation with Steph Halmhofer. ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ Deep in humanity's forgotten past, before the end of the last Ice Age, Stone Age humans shared the planet with a much more advanced star-worshipping civilization. Through their knowledge of the constellations, this unnamed and forgotten society's scientists were able to accurately predict that a planet-wide catastrophic flood was about to unfold that would all but wipe out humanity. By their ascendant technology and possibly some luck, a few members of this advanced society survived. Those remnants took it upon themselves to share their knowledge with the more primitive humans who remained. They began a planet wide campaign, setting sail for the most far-flung corners of the Earth and to help set the foundations for the rebirth of humanity. At least this is the story Graham Hancock has been telling the millions of viewers who've watched his Netflix docuseries Ancient Apocalypse. To talk about all this with us, we're joined this week by Steph Halmhofer. She's an archaeologist researching pseudoarcheaology and historic conspiracy theorizing at the University of Alberta. We're joined today by The Queen of Heathens, Jesseca to talk about evangelical deconstruction and life after church. We've covered a lot of Christian nationalism, from Greg Locke to the Wall Builders' David Barton, and plenty of Satanic Panic, too. We haven't talked much about what it looks like from the inside of an evangelical church or what the exit sign looks like. Jesseca is known on TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube as the Queen of Heathens, and she knows a thing or two about evangelical Christianity in the US. She spent two decades in it before leaving because she read the Bible a little too well. ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ For $3 a month, get an extra couple subscriber only episodes every month. We're back, baby!! And for our first episode of the new year, we're bringing news of the rich and famous. If you haven't been watching the news or trolling Twitter, you might not have noticed that it's been a very bad few months for billionaires. One after another, they've been breaking down the myth that they're in any way special or worthy of our admiration. We have a little rundown on what Kanye, Elon, Bezos, and SBF have been up to in the last four or five months. Other than helping to run his own businesses into the ground, SBF has been one of the loudest voices advocating for a particular school of philanthropy called Effective Altruism. Essentially, Effective Altruists separate themselves from other philanthropists by claiming to use science and reason (that's the effective part) to determine what would benefit the most people. A main feature of Effective Altruism, also part of the “effective” side, is that it's often seen as better to earn a lot of money and donate some of it than to donate your time. SBF is a perfect example of this calculated career planning. At some point, he had a conversation with Will MacAskill, one of the main organizers for the Centre for Effective Altruism. MacAskill told him that it would be better to earn a lot of money for his cause (animal welfare) than to volunteer. Think of how many people would be better off if Sam Bankman Fried had ignored that advice! Is the division between “ministry” and “laity” true, or is it a false, non-biblical, manmade concept that discourages many gifted people from functioning in their ordained roles? God-fearing Christian moms battled to make sure pedophiles weren't corrupting kids with their gay books and communist ideas. The Karen battalion took on critical race theory, book bans, and transgender kids; all in the schoolhouse trenches. It looked like a spontaneous, summer uprising of outraged parents, and it was everywhere–until it suddenly vanished. If the buzzwords evaporated, the vitriol and violence didn't. The metaphors of warfare are becoming more literal by the day as far-right paramilitary cosplay groups are taking these messages to the doors of LGBTQ events, breaking windows at night, and firing into crowds at nightclubs. Culture wars are the centerpiece of the messaging from the GOP presidential front-runner, Ron DeSantis, and the Party is following Florida's lead. Harmful legislation has already passed, with more in the pipes for these far-right cities and states. ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ ⛬ For $3 a month, get an extra couple subscriber only episodes every month. Plagues periodically exact a heavy toll on human life--and much more. They devastate economies, exacerbate social disorder, shock governance systems, provide fodder for political violence, and interact in surprising ways with terrorism. In this conversation, David Priess and longtime RAND Corporation terrorism expert Brian Michael Jenkins talk about the long nature of pandemics, the history of public resistance to efforts to protect public health, links between plagues and social unrest, how the concept of comorbidity applies to the effects of pandemics, the relationship between plagues and political violence, the challenges of rumors and rapid communication, the threat of biological terrorism, and pragmatic ways to counter domestic political violence.Among the works mentioned in this episode:The book Plagues and Their Aftermath by Brian Michael JenkinsThe short story "The Stolen Bacillus" by H.G. Episode 1: The True Believers In 2016, Christian talk radio host Eric Metaxas begrudgingly encouraged his listeners to vote for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. By 2020, he pledged his life to fighting the “stolen election” while talking with Trump on the air. Ahead of the midterm elections, Metaxas and many of his fellow talk radio hosts made sure the falsehood of massive 2020 election fraud was top of mind — on the airwaves and beyond. And while election-denying candidates didn't do as well as many on the right had hoped, at least 170 such candidates have been elected to state and national offices, some of whom will be in charge of future elections. We meet the company whose hosts never backed down from the lies of the stolen 2020 election: Salem Media Group, the largest Christian, conservative multimedia company in the country – and perhaps the most influential media company you've never heard of. The Divided Dial is hosted by journalist and Fulbright Fellow Katie Thornton. Her written articles and audio stories have appeared in The Atlantic, 99% Invisible, The Washington Post, BBC, NPR, WNYC, Minnesota Public Radio, The Guardian, Bloomberg's CityLab, National Geographic, and others. She is a lifelong radio nerd who got her start in media as a teenager, volunteering and working behind the scenes at radio stations for many years. You can follow her work on Instagram or on her website. The Divided Dial was edited by On the Media's executive producer, Katya Rogers. With production support from Max Balton and fact-checking by Tom Colligan, Sona Avakian, and Graham Hacia. Music and sound design by Jared Paul. Jennifer Munson is our technical director. Art by Michael Brennan.
