Through the duration of the American Basketball season which spaned nine years, only two teams played every season of that league. One was the Indiana Pacers who is one of the four teams that merged with the NBA in 1976. The other was the Kentucky Colonels. In their nine seasons as a member of the ABA, the Colonels won more games, had the highest winning percentage in league history and featured three future basketball hall of famers. One of them is the ABA's all-time leader in points and assists. Host Dana Auguster will highlight the great moments of this once great pro basketball franchise. Later in the show, we will send a shout out to the coach that led the Colonels to their only ABA title in 1975. But he is best known for his time as a coach and television analyst for the NBA. As a long time coach in the NBA with several stops including the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies, Hubie Brown could be considered a basketball lifer. Artis Gilmore, one of the greatest centers in the history of professional basketball, will join Billy and Frank on the March 29th episode of A Mick A Mook and A Mic.Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, Gilmore played for the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Boston Celtics in the NBA, and the Kentucky Colonels of the former ABA. Artis was, arguably, the greatest player in the history of the ABA.Standing 7‘2”, Gilmore is often called “The Gentle Giant,” due to being a soft-spoken gentleman. Other nicknames are: “The A-Train”, or simply “A”.Gilmore's college career started at Gardner-Webb Junior College in North Carolina. His junior and senior years he attended Jacksonville University in Florida, where he led the JU Dolphins to the NCAA Division I Championship game in his junior year. Gilmore's Dolphins lost to the Coach Wooden led UCLA Bruins.Artis was picked #1 in the 1971 ABA draft by the Kentucky Colonels. In his first year, he was named both Rookie of the Year and the league's Most Valuable Player. In 1975 he led the Colonels to the ABA Championship, where he was named the MVP.When the ABA disbanded after the 1976 season, Artis went into the special 1976 ABA dispersal draft, and was chosen first overall by the Chicago Bulls.Gilmore played 13 years in the NBA and was a 6x All-Star. He led the NBA in field goal percentage in four consecutive seasons, including a career-best 67% during the 1980–81 season — at the time, the third-highest percentage in NBA history. At the time of his retirement in 1989, Gilmore was the NBA's career leader in field goal percentage (minimum 2,000 shots made) with 59.9%.Here's a look at some of Gilmore's career achievements and awards:ABA champion (1975)ABA Playoffs Most Valuable Player (1975)ABA Most Valuable Player (1972)6× NBA All-Star (1978, 1979, 1981–1983, 1986)5× ABA All-Star (1972–1976)ABA All-Star Game MVP (1974)5× All-ABA First Team (1972–1976)4× ABA All-Defensive First Team (1973–1976)NBA All-Defensive Second Team (1978)ABA Rookie of the Year (1972)ABA All-Rookie First Team (1972)4× ABA rebounding champion (1972–1974, 1976)ABA All-Time TeamConsensus first-team All-American (1971)Second-team All-American – AP, NABC, UPI (1970)2× NCAA rebounding leader (1970, 1971)Third-team Parade All-American (1967)Artis married his college sweetheart, Enola Gay, and has five children.Since the Mook (Frank Pace) also attended Jacksonville University and is a fraternity brother of Artis, this episode on March 29th should be in-depth and fun.

When Merle Travis recorded his beloved (and never-out-of-print) Folk Songs from the Hills album in 1947, he included a version of “I Am a Pilgrim” that would inspire decades of loving imitations by artists such as Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, Johnny Cash and The Byrds. Some people figured Travis must have written the song himself — after all, the same album included two of his best-known originals, “Dark as a Dungeon” and “Sixteen Ton” — but actually “I Am a Pilgrim” is a traditional gospel tune that has deep roots among white and African-American musicians alike. From Camp Meetings … and, well, from jail …In an introduction on his recording 75 years ago, Travis can be heard saying, “When I first got big enough to start running around by myself at night, the first place I wanted to go was to the camp meetings and to the brush arbor meetings and hear them sing the good old songs. I learned a lot of the old songs, but there was one specially that I liked better than all the rest, and I remember it today just as well as I did the day I learned it.”Nice story. Actually, though, Kentucky-born Travis had a mentor: legendary fingerpicking stylist Mose Rager of Muhlenberg County. Legend has it that Mose's brother Lyman learned "I Am a Pilgrim" while in jail in Russellville, Ky, when he heard it being sung by a black prisoner in a nearby cell. Another version of the yarn places the jailhouse in Elkton, Ky. Wherever lockup actually was, Lyman was said to have later taught the song to his brother, Mose, who in turn taught it to their young neighbor, Merle Travis.Mose Rager RemembersIn a early 1960s film, Mose Rager is heard telling folklorist D.K. Wilgus about the tune's origin. “We sang that old song around here years ago,” he said. “It's just an old brush arbor song. Everybody sang it; Merle Travis and my two brothers, we'd all get together out here … out to the edge of town and just sit out there till about 12 o'clock and sing old hymns.”We don't know the name of the black singer whom Lyman Rager heard in that Kentucky jail, but as Asheville, NC, musician/author Wayne Erbsen has noted, “I Am A Pilgrim” was recorded “by 14 African-American groups before it was even a gleam in Merle Travis' eyes."  Pre-Merle RenditionsThe first of those groups was the Norfolk Jubilee Quartette, which recorded the song in 1924 for Paramount Records. The Tidewater Virginia group released dozens of records between 1921 and 1940 — much of it gospel, but also blues and jazz numbers — and in their hands, “I Am a Pilgrim” has a bit of the kick that would come down to Travis two decades later.Among other little known groups to record it were The Good Will Male Chorus (1927), South Carolina Quartette (1928), Mound City Jubilee Quartette (1935), Heavenly Gospel Singers (1936), Golden Gate Quartet (1939) and Southern Wonder Quartet (1940).Bluegrass AttachmentsOf course, the song also has strong bluegrass attachments. Carl Story, considered the father of bluegrass gospel sound starting in the 1940s, said he knew the song from the repertoire of Georgia country music pioneer Riley Puckett.Story learned it as a little boy when his father took him to hear Puckett play in Lenoir, NC. Puckett's recordings were to inspire everyone from Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs on. Many bluegrass lovers also came to know the tune as strictly an instrumental, because of guitarist Clarence White's picking on the Kentucky Colonels' iconic 1964 album, Appalachian Swing!A Possible Origin StoryBut how did the song come about in the first place? A good question, that. Our research has turned up no definitive author, but it does find this to be an excellent example of how folk songs evolve.A connection to classic Christian hymn writing seems obvious, because the lyrics cite some rather esoteric New Testament verses. The title, for instance, seems to refer to The Epistle to the Hebrews (11:13), which reads in part, “…and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” Also, one verse says, "If I could just touch the hem of his garment" which appears to allude to a story in the Book of Matthew (9:20) in which a woman is healed after touching Jesus' robe. All this might mean we should look for an origin in an 1841 composition by South Carolina poet Mary Dana Shindler, whose hymn “I Am a Pilgrim and I Am a Stranger” contained such Bible references. A rendering of that song actually was one of the first records ever released, specifically a 1917 disc pressed on Victor by The Imperial Quartet. However, the melody there is absolutely nothing like what's come down to us from Merle Travis. In other words, it is highly unlikely that any of those 14 African-American groups recording “I Am a Pilgrim” between 1924 and 1947 were listening to that thing. A better theory is that concurrent with white churchified rendering were more soulful African-American versions. We do know that in 1925 — just one year after the Norfolk Quartette's Paramount recording — the song showed up in a book called, The Negro and His Songs: A Study of Typical Negro Songs in the South by Howard W. Odum and Guy B. Johnson. In addition, folklorists John and Ruby Lomax also collected a version of it during their 1939 Southern states recording trip. Our Take on the TuneFor The Flood, it all began a few weeks ago when Charlie took his first stumbling steps — slipping and a-sliding, as it were — in learning some bottleneck technique on his new resonator guitar. Right away, what came out reminded him of the old gospel tune from his youth — he even recalled Grandma Robertson humming it while she washed dishes — but he just couldn't seem to get the song down. Then Danny came along, took one listen and started just naturally channeling an old Doc-Watson-cum-Chet-Atkins vibe, laying down an absolutely rock solid foundation. Sam grabbed his “E” harp and found his groove, Randy jumped in with some beautiful harmony for the choruses, and suddenly “I Am a Pilgrim” landed righteously in the repertoire. His career .880 free throw percentage ranks No. 1 in ABA history, and at the time of his retirement in 1980, his .900 percentage was the best of any NBA player. In 1987, Barry was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all-time by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Early era of the Indiana Pacers: encore

hoosierhistorylive

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2021 56:15

To mark the start of the new season for the Indiana Pacers , we will time travel more than 50 years back to explore the history that led up to their debut game against the Kentucky Colonels in the Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The new team was part of an upstart professional league, the colorful American Basketball Association (ABA), and before any of the players had even scored a point, much civic, social and sports history already had been made. Two previous pro basketball teams based in Indianapolis had died. One of them, the Indianapolis Olympians, went down in scandal. Efforts at putting together the Pacers team had met a variety of challenges. Unsuccessful attempts had been made to woo household names in Indiana - including former high school basketball sensations Oscar Robertson and identical twins Tom and Dick Van Arsdale - to be part of the Pacers organization. And some of the African-American players who had been signed to the team encountered challenges finding housing in the Hoosier capital due to the racial discrimination that was unfortunately common at the time. To explore the rich history of the early era of the Pacers - including the years immediately following the team's first game in 1967 - Nelson is joined in studio by veteran sports journalist Mark Montieth in this encore of a show originally broadcast in 2017. As a boy growing up in Indy, Mark listened to the debut Pacers game on the radio. He is the author of  Reborn: The Pacers and the Return of Pro Basketball to Indianapolis (Cardinal Publishing Group). In the early 1960s, Mark writes, the Hoosier capital was growing, "yet it had no national sports identity beyond the Indianapolis 500." Civic and business leaders wanted to change that. The result was a team that won three national championships in the ABA, which eventually merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a sportswriter at The Indianapolis Star, Mark Montieth covered the Pacers for 12 of the team's NBA seasons. Early games in the ABA often were raucous, and fighting among the players was common. Several of the early Pacers were regarded as wild characters, including fan favorites Bob Netolicky and Mel Daniels. The starting salaries of early Pacers players? According to Reborn, one aspiring Pacer signed a contract for $10,000 (that would be about $78,000 in 2020), with the possibility of a $2,000 bonus. The ABA was distinctive for its red, white and blue basketball and the introduction to the pro game of the 3-point shot. "The Pacers were born and raised in a league and an era unlike any other in the history of professional sports," Mark writes in Reborn. The future of the team and of the league were considered so uncertain that Bobby "Slick" Leonard (the former high school basketball star from Terre Haute who later coached the Pacers to the national championships) was so wary of giving up a secure job as a salesman for class rings that he didn't initially seek the coaching opportunity. Some early players were essentially being offered second chances to achieve hoops glory. In high school and college, Netolicky was "more motivated to have fun than to play basketball" and had exotic pets such as an ocelot and a boa constrictor, according to Reborn. His eventual teammate Roger Brown had taken a factory job on the night shift after his links to a gambler ended opportunities as a player in college and with the NBA. Other Pacers history facts: Although Reborn indicates that it remains unclear who originally suggested "Pacers" as the team's name, initial announcements referenced the harness horse racetrack at the Fairgrounds near the Pacers' home court at the Coliseum (a pacer is a type of racehorse). Initial reports also referred to the Indy 500, which features a pace car. The team's colors, blue and gold, have remained the same for 50 years and are a tribute to the state's official colors - as seen, for example, on the state flag. Seven of the 12 players on the starting roster were African American. "That amounted to a bold statement in 1967," Mark writes in Reborn. "Most NBA teams were adhering to an unspoken color barrier that kept rosters half-white at the bare minimum. Even the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers, representing the nation's largest and most cosmopolitan cities, conformed."

Bill Myers Inspires  Imagine being a white person born with a life threatening illness and the only people who did not given up on you were black people. Then later finding yourself homeless and black people once again providing guidance, shelter and a pathway forward in your life. Richard Propes shares his powerful story of how black people encouraged, influenced and inspired his life. Since 1989, Indianapolis activist/writer Richard Propes has traveled over 6,000 miles by wheelchair on a one-man mission he calls "The Tenderness Tour," an effort to end violence in the lives of children he began in 1989 with a 41-day, 1000+ mile wheelchair ride around the state of Indiana. While Richard's childhood story is dramatic, from his birth and unexpected survival with spina bifida to his early experiences with childhood sexual abuse, even more dramatic is the story of Richard's survival and creation of a life far beyond anyone's expectations including his own. Now in his early 50's and still far surpassing medical expectations, Richard continues to be an award-winning activist and writer who has been nominated two years in a row for Indy's "Best Human" in the Indy Star's annual community choice awards. In addition to raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children's organizations worldwide, Propes is the founder of the Race Away From Domestic Violence, an annual 5k event benefiting the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence that is now in its 17th year. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Richard is the founder/publisher of TheIndependentCritic.com, a member of the Indiana Film Journalists Association, and his reviews are carried on Rotten Tomatoes. He's the author of "The Hallelujah Life" and has produced two short films, an IndyFringe show, a comedy DVD, and a number of poetry readings, concerts, and special events. He's been the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash, Order of Kentucky Colonels, Prevent Child Abuse America's highest honor the Donna J. Stone Award, Indiana Minority Business Magazine's Champions of Diversity Award, and just this year received the Jefferson Award. Heartland International Film Festival presents the Richard D. Es un privilegio saludaros otra vez. Escuchar audio
