At a time when Reggaeton is topping the charts globally, while Puetro Rican people are making headlines for their struggle for autonomy, Lester Rey's new EP "Epifania" provides a perfect soundtrack for the new era of discourse on social justice, search for new identities, and new experiments in cross-cultural interchange. Lester seamlessly blends the musical traditions of his heritage like Bomba and Cha-cha-cha with his love of contemporary Hip Hop, Soul and R&B to create a sound of unity for the Caribbean diaspora. Lester Rey's journey from playing congas in his family's Humboldt Park church to becoming a producer and vocalist all over the country is one that's very Chicago, very Puerto Rico but most importantly very Lester Rey. His new EP is called "Santuario," and it's just in time to usher us into Spring and Summer on a tide of dreamy beats and introspective lyrics. The EP is a deeply personal project that finds the "Latin Soul" singer and songwriter in search of a sanctuary as he addresses pain and trauma of the past and re-examines his previously held beliefs. Lester spoke with Jill Hopkins about the project and its themes. For more info about Lester Rey, visit: https://www.lesterrey.com
Lester Rey is a singer and musician whose unflinching and infectious creations remold and reimagine in the spirit of boogaloo, overlapping the edges and sounds from Puerto Rico, across Latin America, and his home city of Chicago. His most recent project, entitled PROMESA, is a fierce and loving reflection based off the passage of the PROMESA Act, passed this past summer, which placed governance of the island under the control of a Congressionally-appoint board and continues the colonial violence enacted by the U.S. on Puerto Rico.
