A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan — Episode Notes Episode: "Feathers and Bubbles" Hosts: Tom and Dan | Guest: Seth Petruzelli Sponsors / Ad Reads JustCallMoe.com — recording studio sponsor read at the top of the show; also plugged later as the presenting sponsor of the upcoming Tom and Dan Cruise. The Bart Marek Team (Bart Marek and Crystal Vann) — two full-time, experienced Florida realtors based in Clermont, offering "two-for-one" service for buying or selling; a personal testimonial about them helping sell a family member's house in St. Augustine; barttherealtor.com, call or text either agent directly. Fairvilla Megastore — sexual wellness superstore with multiple locations, described as having modern/high-tech products, costumes and lingerie for Halloween, Fairvilla University online educational courses, and a discreet "Secrets Hideaway" section; fairvilla.com. Don Mealy Chevrolet (Clermont) — longtime advertiser; contact GM JC Harrelson and mention Tom and Dan; plugged for Corvettes, trucks, and used vehicles, with a personal note about owning a Silverado and Traverse from them; DMChevy.com. Segment Rundown Cold open, grooming talk — Tom and Dan welcome Seth Petruzelli to the couch and razz him about his beard and blow-dried hair; a tangent on straighteners vs. blow-dryers leads into a bit about their wives' expensive Dyson hair tools. Recent celebrity deaths — The hosts run through a rough week of deaths, including Tim Curry, Dolly (referenced briefly), and the voice actor of Optimus Prime, riffing darkly on average lifespan. Seth's chronic chaos — Running bit that Seth is perpetually running late or juggling a crisis; today it's his dog and a vet appointment, plus it's revealed to be Seth's birthday. Seth's dog and Disney cruise — Seth brought his dog Rocky (a different Rocky than Tom's) on set; talk turns to Seth boarding him for four nights while Seth takes his first vacation in two and a half years, a Disney cruise with his wife and daughter Vera. Tom's dog Rocky and pet talk — Tom shows off his own dog Rocky on stream, admits he's been neglecting him since focusing on his young daughter, and the group jokes about pushing Tom's son Tommy toward wanting a dog or cat despite Tracy's reluctance. Karate class standards slipping — A tangent from the dojo talk about how kids today can't finish basic requirements (like a brown belt or three months of consistent training), tying into a broader "everything is getting weaker/no consequences" complaint, including schools making gym-class changing rooms optional now. Locker room embarrassment nostalgia — The hosts and Seth swap stories about being self-conscious getting undressed in front of others as kids and in a pro arena-football locker room as an adult. Seth's MRI/health update — Seth shares that he got a full-body MRI, compared it to one from two years prior, and got mostly good results except his prostate being "large side of normal." Seth's dojo being demolished — Seth explains his dojo's building is being torn down and he must vacate by November; he's negotiating a new space, planning to use students to help move (in exchange for food/drinks), and reflects on a black belt who's been especially helpful. Should Seth do a GoFundMe? — Debate over whether it's in good taste for a business to crowdfund when forced out by demolition, referencing a nearby business owner doing the same; jokes about a bikini car wash and a "GoFundMe vs. crowdfund" distinction (charity vs. general fundraising). The actual dojo car wash fundraiser — Dan recounts attending a real car-wash fundraiser for the dojo, paying more than requested because the kids did a thorough job. Daughter's Taco Bell complaint — Dan tells a story about his daughter filing an online complaint after Taco Bell repeatedly forgot part of her order. Joke about Seth's finances — Riffing on the idea that no one will donate to a GoFundMe for someone with a lakeside mansion, a boat, and a nice car, including a bit about trading in a BMW for a Hyundai. Dojo move logistics and mock fundraiser pitch — More detail on moving costs (a mirror company hired just to transport dojo mirrors, a dumpster for old equipment); the group jokingly pitches an absurd "buy a black belt" crowdfunding tier system, with Seth explaining the real distinction between an official ranked black belt and a "junior/in-house" one. AI in podcast production — The show discusses no longer paying a human for intro songs/jingles, now using AI for notes and occasionally songs (though they still do some manual ones too), and debate the line between AI convenience and "authenticity" compared to corporate radio. Prostitution sting debate — Sparked by 49ers owner Jed York's prostitution-sting arrest and a local Altamonte Springs sting ("Operation Midnight Heat," 37 arrests), the hosts argue undercover prostitution stings are a poor use of police resources compared to focusing on predators of minors, and make the case for regulating/legalizing sex work. Caller: Concrete Mike, prostitution talk — Concrete Mike calls in about hiring escorts for parties in the past; the call is plagued by a bad phone connection and cuts out repeatedly before the hosts move on. GTA 6 leak coverage — Detailed rundown of hacker "Cyber Leak's" leaked GTA 6 footage (starting August 18), new gameplay features (six-star wanted system, stamina and car-gas meters, a karma system, Red Dead-style bullet-time aiming), a leaked nudist-area clip, and a somber aside about how hyper-realistic "living a second life in a game" can feel. GTA franchise money talk — The hosts look up that the GTA franchise has made $11 billion total, with GTA 5 alone earning $815 million in its first 24 hours; confirmed November 19, 2026 release date for GTA 6. Caller: "J Volvo" — A young-sounding caller who turns out to be a 40-year-old Marine and brown belt calls in as a bit, pitching a "Fit Tom Fridays" 5K fundraiser idea for Seth's dojo; the hosts jokingly induct him as a rookie "cop" character and enjoy the surprise live call. New "Stage" Rock Band reboot — Discussion of an upcoming Rock Band-style rhythm game launching in December, with nostalgia about old Rock Band parties, and a broader riff on short attention spans/endless content (dating apps, streaming, mobile games) making it hard for any single game to hold interest. Six Flags roller coaster aneurysm story (teaser + full segment) — After a break, the hosts cover two women who suffered brain aneurysms riding Six Flags' X2 roller coaster, show POV footage of the ride's uniquely independently-spinning carts, and speculate (semi-jokingly) about the physics/anatomy behind why it happened. Flatulence and bathroom health talk — A crude tangent connecting back to Seth's MRI story, where he and the others discuss holding in gas, bowel habits, and general bathroom TMI. Voicemail: grandma question (Amedeus, Fort Myers) — A caller references a past on-air comment and asks which grandmother the hosts would rather "embarrass" in front of; leads to a riff on generational/cultural stereotypes about tougher vs. softer grandmothers. Voicemail: convenience store "big black mama" story (Debary Joe) — A caller shares a heartfelt/funny anecdote about a stranger's kindness at a gas station after a rough day, prompting brief pushback from a host about the framing of the story. Mad honey discussion — Seth explains he bought "mad honey" (a hallucinogenic honey from Nepal) and plans to have his wife try it first; the hosts detail its origins, effects, dangerous dosing risks, its history as an ancient biological weapon, and its recent viral popularity via a Joe Rogan clip. Nepal flooding aside — A brief, more serious detour about real disaster footage of catastrophic flooding in Nepal that circulated online. Psychedelics and mental health tangent — Talk shifts to Kratom, mushrooms, microdosing, and studies on psilocybin therapy for PTSD/anxiety; Seth admits he's more afraid of a mushroom trip than he ever was fighting professionally (referencing his MMA background against opponents like Kimbo Slice and Bob Sapp). Voicemail: adult content from caller "Mike" — A caller shares an explicit story from his younger years about hiring escorts for group parties at his house; the hosts summarize and react without repeating graphic detail. Voicemail: workplace exorcism question (BDM, Jacksonville) — A caller asks if anyone has heard of a business getting an exorcism, sparking a broader discussion about corporate superstition (feng shui, sage smudging, "energy"), with the hosts drawing a line between supernatural belief and legitimate ideas like attitude/mindset affecting outcomes. Voicemail: "Pure Pod" gadget — A caller points out that a produce-washing gadget advertised online is basically a vibrator; the hosts confirm the device is a real product marketed to skirt platform rules around selling sexual wellness items. Voicemail: old photo in ski resort system — A caller shares that a modern ski resort pulled up his decades-old childhood lift-ticket photo from a previous owner's records, leading to a discussion about how far back companies' digital recordkeeping goes and some personal skiing stories from the hosts. Dojo move update and wrap-up — Seth gives a final update: staying within a 3-mile radius under the new name "Soto Dojo," reviewing a lease, and dealing with a landlord dispute over alleged unpaid utility charges/liens the show insists were never billed properly. Studio/podcast future plugs and cruise pitch — The hosts float building a future glass-walled studio, mention recent released interviews (Patrick Warburton, Lorenzo Lamas), and give a detailed pitch for the upcoming Tom and Dan Cruise, including perks, cost, and booking details, before signing off. Key Dates / Plugs Mentioned November 2026 — Seth must vacate his current dojo location due to the building being demolished. November 19, 2026 — GTA 6 release date (confirmed unchanged despite ongoing leaks). December (2026) — New "Stage" Rock Band-style rhythm game launches. Ongoing — Seth relocating his dojo to a new spot within a 3-mile radius, tentatively named "Soto Dojo"; lease still being finalized. September 23–27, 2027 — Tom and Dan Cruise aboard the MSC Seashore (Thursday–Sunday), stopping in Nassau and a private island; includes unlimited drink package and free Wi-Fi for two, a live podcast taping, birthday party, and gambling night; $200 fully refundable deposit holds a spot, with payment installments available through Ahoy Cruises; presented by JustCallMoe.com. Recently released — New Patrick Warburton interview episode and a Lorenzo Lamas interview from the previous night. Notable Guests/Callers Seth Petruzelli — In-studio guest; martial arts instructor whose dojo is being forced to relocate. Concrete Mike — Phone-in caller; connection was too poor to complete his story. "J Volvo" — Phone-in caller; a 40-year-old Marine and brown belt who called in as a bit. Amedeus (Fort Myers) — Voicemail caller with a grandma-themed question. Debary Joe — Voicemail caller sharing a convenience-store story. Mike — Voicemail caller sharing a story from his past. BDM (Jacksonville) — Voicemail caller asking about a workplace exorcism. Unnamed caller — Voicemail about the "Pure Pod" produce washer. Unnamed caller (37 years old) — Voicemail about an old childhood ski resort photo resurfacing. ### Website: https://tomanddan.com/ App: https://tomanddan.com/app Become a BDM: https://tomanddan.com/registration Merch: https://tomanddan.myshopify.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TomandDanLive Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/tomanddanlive Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AMediocreTime Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomanddanlive/ X: https://x.com/TomAndDanLive TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@tomanddanshow Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/tomanddan ACT RSS: https://feeds.libsyn.com/61976/rss AMT RSS: https://feeds.libsyn.com/18904/rss
In this unlocked bonus episode from March, Josh returns to the podcast to talk about the Theatre of Cruelty, and the Trump administrations use of ICE agents to create bizarre viral content for its diminishing base of supporters. We talk about how the administration's content strategy has changed since 2016, and how it's had to change to adapt to aimless scrolling and lowered attention spans. We also visit the UK and talk about the results of the Gorton & Denton by-election, and ask: did Matt Goodwin lose because he spent too much time on his phone? In this episode, the crew hosts the final audience-participation recording of The Dojo and opens with retirement annuities, inheritance, estate taxes and the financial realities families face when a loved one dies. Women's Day then sparks a heated debate about whether the holiday has become another Valentine's Day, why today's women expect to be personally celebrated, and whether independence has genuinely liberated women or simply left them carrying both corporate and domestic responsibilities. From there, the conversation turns to traditional wives, stay-at-home mothers and the danger of building your entire life around a man who can one day decide to leave. The crew debates whether a single-income household is still realistic, how capitalism has forced both partners into the workplace, why some men still expect working women to fulfil traditional duties, and whether marriage contracts, shared property and financial independence can ever truly protect someone from divorce. The audience joins in as the discussion expands into marriage, lobola, family expectations and the difficult balance between choosing a partner for yourself and choosing someone capable of fitting into the wider family. The crew questions whether marriage is still about love or has become an economic and cultural arrangement, why long-term relationships require constant evolution, and how people raised in single-parent and two-parent homes may carry completely different ideas of commitment, conflict and family life.Things get even messier when the crew asks whether straight women would date bisexual men. That opens a brutally honest conversation about masculinity, homophobia, sexuality, cheating, competition and why people feel differently when their partner is attracted to both men and women. They also debate whether relationships are damaged by our desire to “own” people, whether consensual non-monogamy is more honest than cheating, and how a hypersexual society is reshaping intimacy, identity and the way children understand sex.The audience then brings up men borrowing money from women, love scams and whether gender equality means women should also be willing to financially support their partners. This leads back into a wider discussion about successful men gaining access to more women, wives receiving the burdened version of their husbands while outsiders get the fun version, and whether providing financially is enough when someone is emotionally absent from the marriage. The episode closes on a more reflective note as younger listeners ask the crew for advice about marriage, responsibility, personal growth and becoming the person their future family will need. Long-time supporters share heartfelt stories about discovering The Dojo, finding community through the podcast and having their values challenged over the years. As the second-last episode draws to a close, the final audience participation becomes both a classic chaotic Dojo debate and an emotional tribute to the impact the podcast has had over its ten-year journey.

Bradley Anderson has dedicated much of his life to preserving and teaching the traditional Japanese martial arts, following a path that took him from rural Minnesota to the training halls of Japan and back again. Growing up in Hawley, Minnesota, Bradley developed an early interest in martial arts that eventually led him halfway around the world. He spent 11 years living and working in Japan, immersing himself in the country’s culture while training extensively in Kendo and Iaido under respected Japanese instructors. Through years of dedicated study, he overcame language barriers, embraced the discipline and attention to detail demanded by these centuries-old arts, and earned the rank of 4th-degree black belt in Iaido. Following his return to the United States, Bradley founded Agassiz Dojo with the mission of preserving and sharing the traditions of Japanese swordsmanship. What began in Moorhead has grown into a thriving martial arts community and recently expanded into a dedicated dojo in West Fargo, providing practitioners with a permanent home for the study of Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo. Today, it is believed to be the only school of its kind in the region devoted exclusively to traditional Japanese weapons arts. In this episode, recorded at Smoke and Blaze in Parktown North, the crew officially begins the final stretch of The Dojo and answers the question everyone has been asking: why end the podcast after ten years? They unpack how life, work, family responsibilities and changing priorities have made it increasingly difficult to get four adults into the same room every week. They also reflect on feeling as though they have said almost everything there is to say, and why it matters to leave voluntarily, on their own terms, rather than waiting for the show to slowly die or be forced out. The crew launches a WhatsApp hotline for listeners to share voice notes, videos, favourite moments, worst takes and personal stories about what The Dojo has meant to them, while teasing an upcoming audience-participation episode. From there, the episode becomes a full trip through The Dojo's history. The crew remembers the wild night that inspired the podcast, finding their first recording studio online, paying for time in a bedroom setup and releasing the earliest episodes with questionable GoPro footage. They revisit the barbershop and salon concepts, early guests, the PMI and Yamaha eras, pop-up recordings, house parties, festival appearances, failed attempts to build a podcast network and the many venues, sponsors, collaborators and friends who became part of the journey. They also look back at the technical disasters, financial risks, marathon episodes, memorable interviews, legendary parties and unexpected opportunities that came from building one of South Africa's earliest long-form conversational podcasts. The reflections become more personal as they discuss how the podcast changed their friendships, careers, confidence and social lives, while also remembering former guests and members of the community who have since passed away. They unpack disagreements behind the scenes, the pressure of carrying the show through difficult periods, the people who joined and left along the way, and the strange feeling of finally recognising the impact of something while preparing to let it go.The final stretch shifts into a heated conversation about modern dating, men approaching women, rejection, workplace boundaries and the difference between behaviour that is socially inappropriate and behaviour that is morally wrong. The crew debates sexual harassment, unsolicited explicit pictures, why women sometimes respond politely when they feel threatened, why victims may remain silent and how people instinctively defend members of their own “tribe.” That opens an even messier discussion about power, promotions and transactional sex: whether sleeping with someone to advance your career makes both parties complicit, whether meaningful consent can exist when one person controls the opportunity, and whether someone who willingly tries to bypass the system can later claim exploitation when the deal goes wrong. It is a nostalgic, funny and deeply contentious episode that celebrates ten years of The Dojo while proving that, even this close to the end, the crew can still find something new to argue about.

The book, Signals & Levers, gives software engineers a practical vocabulary and toolkit for that examination. A core insight is that most organizational dysfunction isn't caused by bad people or bad intentions, but by systems that produce bad outcomes predictably and structurally. The named archetypes in the book — over 20 of them, covering patterns like escalating technical debt, the "fixes that fail" loop, and the boiling frog — give teams a shared language to recognize and reason about those patterns without having to discover them from scratch. The most practically actionable section of the conversation covers signals versus levers: understanding the difference between information (a signal) and an intervention point (a lever) is the foundation for making changes that actually work rather than changes that feel productive and achieve nothing. On AI, both authors are cautious in the right ways: Elisabeth uses it daily as a thinking partner but keeps herself firmly at the steering wheel. Joel's warning is starker — AI amplifies whatever is already true about your organization, including dysfunction, and if it lets you ship faster than you can learn, the consequences may be severe. The book closes with an exercise for the reader: if AI doubles your delivery speed, what happens when you can ship faster than you can adapt?RECOMMENDED BOOKSElisabeth Hendrickson & Joel Tosi • Signals & Levers • https://amzn.to/4g6Fb3CDiana Montalion • Learning Systems Thinking • https://amzn.to/3ZpycdJDon Norman • The Design of Everyday Things • https://amzn.to/4fV6QVlGene Kim • The Unicorn Project • https://amzn.to/3woXQDzGene Kim, Kevin Behr & George Spafford • The Phoenix Project • https://amzn.to/3X9cYxaPeter Degrace & Leslie Hulet Stahl • Wicked Problems, Righteous Solutions • https://amzn.to/3ScP0D9Frederick Brooks Jr. • The Mythical Man-Month • https://amzn.to/4gd10OVGerald Weinberg • An Introduction to General Systems Thinking • https://amzn.to/4dZCsaODonella H. The hobby is drowning in great choices right now, and that's both a gift and a trap. We talk through what “superabundance” really looks like in modern scale modeling: a flood of high-quality plastic model kits, aftermarket decals, 3D printed parts, and specialized paint and weathering products that would've felt impossible a couple decades ago. Using examples like the suddenly crowded field of 1/72 P-40B kits, we dig into why the golden age of modeling is real, and how it can still leave you stuck staring at options instead of making progress. We also share listener-driven updates and community news as the IPMS Nationals get closer, including travel plans, meetups, and the behind-the-scenes effort it takes to host fellow modelers while your house and hobby room are mid-remodel. On the community side, we're pushing toward a better home for long-term reference content, so great builds and tips don't disappear into the Facebook timeline. If you've been following the Dojo build content, we also talk about improving visibility and inviting more Q and A with builders. Then we go hands-on with one of the most common problem areas in aircraft modeling: clear parts and canopies. We cover practical techniques like using a micro razor saw to avoid cracking brittle clear plastic, choosing the right adhesive (and why some “clear” glues can still be tricky), and how careful sanding and test fitting before you glue can prevent gaps you'll hate later. We also debate the big workflow question: when to attach the canopy, and how the answer changes depending on the kit and whether it's posed open or closed. If you enjoy these kinds of deep-dive shop talks, subscribe, share the show with a modeling friend, and leave a quick rating or review. We settle into a laid-back holiday catch-up, swap a few vacation highlights, and revisit that specific kind of nostalgia that comes from remembering long-gone hobby shops and the stuff we bought there. Then we look ahead to July with two feature episodes on the calendar, including a shop talk segment, plus a Nationals run-up as IPMS Nationals gets closer. If you like plastic model building podcasts that stay practical and builder-focused, this one sets the tone for what's coming next.We also spend time on the heart of the hobby: community. The Dojo keeps growing because modelers show up with questions, techniques, material tips, and works in progress, and the replies actually help people build better. A perfect example is the 3M tape conversation that started as a listener tip and turned into a thread with real momentum and even some unexpected crossover into Mike's day job. If you've got a topic you want us to tackle, or you're planning to come to the national convention, we want to hear from you. Have you heard the "autopilot" fear currently running through the creative world? It's the nagging thought that says: Why bother training for a career in voiceover when an AI can clone a voice in seconds? Many aspiring artists are stalling before they even begin, convinced that the machine has already won the race. But is a cloned voice actually the same as a human story? Or are we confusing "data" with "connection"? Let's make the case that while AI can create realistic digital avatars, it currently lacks the emotional depth, spontaneity, and "soul" that define human performance. The solution isn't to ignore AI, but to double down on the one thing a machine cannot replicate: authenticity. This is the philosophy of Tish Hicks. A classically trained opera singer and legendary voice actor with over 30 years in the industry, Tish has voiced everything from high-profile Subaru campaigns to iconic roles in Grand Theft Auto V and World of Warcraft. As the "Master Sensei" of The V.O. Dojo, she is a self-described "educational rebel" who is proving that human-made art isn't just surviving—it's thriving. In this episode, Tish shares how she maintains a six-figure career in an era of digital clones. We discuss why the "human premium" is becoming more valuable as the market gets flooded with AI, and why now is actually the most important time to master your craft. If you've been hovering on the edge of a creative career but are held back by the fear of technology, Tish's insights will provide the mindset shift you need to find your own authentic resonance. She will also share the 5 rules of voice over and get you in the right mindset for thinking this is actually possible. Sharing our conversation could be the spark that helps a talented voice find the courage to speak up in a world of digital noise. Episode 450 | Interview with Grandmaster Park (GMP) Podcast Description Episode 450 is a sit-down conversation with Grandmaster Park (GMP) — a longtime friend of the show and someone who's helped shape the modern martial arts school industry. We go back to the “old days” when billing companies took a painful cut just to collect tuition, and we talk about how the industry has changed — not just in technology, but in parent expectations, communication, staff culture, and what it takes to build something that lasts. Along the way, GMP shares a few simple (but powerful) mindset shifts: how to stop letting “scorpions” steal your peace, why COVID was a reset button for the industry, how to train staff like you train students, and why school owners have to start thinking about retirement and exit plans like real entrepreneurs. We also dig into AI — not as a gimmick, but as a tool that rewards school owners who learn how to ask better questions, document their story, and build systems faster than ever. Key Takeaways The industry used to pay a “tuition tax” — and most owners don't realize how far we've come.Back in the day, schools were heavily dependent on billing companies to collect tuition, and the fees could be brutal. The bigger point: when you've lived in a new normal long enough, you forget how much friction you used to tolerate. Parents don't automatically trust the instructor the way they used to — so communication has to evolve. What worked 20–30 years ago (“Just do this at home and they'll do better in class”) doesn't always land today. The message still matters, but the delivery has to be clearer, more intentional, and more repeatable. Not everything is controllable — and the scorpion story is a gut-check for school owners.GMP shares the classic “scorpion and the frog” story: some people sting because it's in their nature. The lesson isn't to become cynical — it's to stop being surprised, protect your energy, and choose your circle wisely. COVID was a reset button — and the schools that survived often leveled up.GMP's take is blunt: a shakeout happened. Some schools closed that didn't deserve it, but many that survived did so because they had a real foundation, real systems, and the discipline to prepare for “winter.” If you're living tuition-to-tuition as a business owner, something is off.GMP challenges the idea that entrepreneurship should feel like paycheck-to-paycheck. He points to basic discipline: track spending, cut the leaks, and start investing for the future. Compound interest is the “eighth wonder of the world” — but only if you actually use it.The conversation hits on index funds (like the S&P 500), performance-based investing vs. cash sitting idle, and simple retirement vehicles (like a SIMPLE IRA) that can help owners and staff build long-term stability. Train your staff the same way you train your students: white belt to black belt. One of the biggest paradigm shifts in the episode: school owners already know how to build a curriculum that takes a beginner to black belt — but they don't apply that same thinking to staff. GMP's challenge: build a staff playbook and training path with clear expectations, checkpoints, and “retests.” If a student doesn't know the form, they don't move on. Staff training should work the same way. Some “student problems” are actually teaching mistakes. The left/right example is a perfect reminder: if the student can't process the instruction, the teacher has to change the approach. Color patches. Better cues. Different framing. The responsibility is to keep improving the delivery. Failure isn't the enemy — but you have to teach the culture around it.GMP and Allie talk about how Eastern philosophy treats failure as part of success, while many parents/students hear “failure” as “you are a failure.” Clear guidelines, expectations, and the way you deliver feedback matters. AI rewards the owner who learns how to ask better questions.GMP calls AI a new gold rush. The shift is from hunting for answers to learning how to prompt well. Start simple. Talk to it. Use voice mode. Feed it your story and your values — then let it help you build systems, onboarding, curriculum, and communication faster. Exit planning is coming to martial arts — whether owners are ready or not.GMP points out that private equity is paying attention to children's activity businesses (including martial arts). That makes “exit” a real conversation — but it starts with getting your house in order. Action Steps for School Owners Do a quick “leak audit” this week.Pick one recurring expense you've normalized (subscriptions, food runs, convenience spending) and calculate what it costs per month. Decide what you're keeping, what you're cutting, and what you're redirecting into savings/investing. Create a “Close the Dojo” shutdown routine — but for your finances.Set a weekly 15-minute money check-in: revenue, expenses, cash on hand, and one action to improve next week. Build a staff curriculum outline (one page is enough to start).Write the stages of staff development like belts: New hire (white belt): basics + values + front desk standards Assistant instructor: class support + parent communication Lead instructor: full class ownership + retention responsibilities Manager: systems + team leadership Add “retests” to your staff training.Pick one skill that keeps breaking (phone scripts, intro tours, enrollment conversations, attendance follow-up). Create a simple checklist and re-train until it's consistent. Fix one teaching mistake you keep repeating. If you keep saying the same thing and getting the same blank stares, change the cue. Change the visual. Change the framing. Don't keep “punching the same wall.” Start using AI daily for one small business task.Don't overcomplicate it. Pick one: Draft a parent email Create an onboarding checklist Write a staff training outline Brainstorm a retention campaign The goal is reps — not perfection. Write down your “exit plan” in one paragraph.Even if it's messy. Do you want to sell? License? Hand it to a team member? Reduce teaching hours? The point is to stop pretending you'll “figure it out later.” Additional Resources Mentioned Index funds / S&P 500 (as an example of performance-based investing) SIMPLE IRA (as an example of a retirement vehicle for small businesses) PCP (Praise–Correct–Praise) and positive reframing/deflection as communication tools Note: A book by Tony Graff is mentioned in the conversation, but the exact title wasn't confirmed in the transcript.

Episode 449 | How to Wake Up Fired Up Again (Even If You're Burnt Out) Podcast Description Some mornings you wake up tired before the day even starts. Not because you're lazy. As Duane puts it, you're loaded — staff stuff, parent stuff, money stuff, marketing stuff, and a thousand open loops all living in your head at the same time. In Episode 449, Duane and Allie talk about how to get your energy and excitement back without pretending you have a perfect life or a Pinterest-perfect routine. Instead, they share a simple, repeatable framework you can run even on your worst weeks — starting with a non-negotiable step that happens the night before. Key Takeaways You're not lazy — you're loaded. If you're waking up exhausted, it's often because you're carrying too much mentally. Too many “browser tabs” are open, and you're trying to keep them all from crashing. Morning routines matter, but perfection isn't the goal.Duane says it straight: you don't need a Pinterest-perfect routine. You need one you can repeat on your worst week — not just your best week. Starting your day in reaction mode keeps you behind. When you grab your phone first thing, you're instantly responding to problems, messages, and stress. That sets the tone for the whole day. The first step to a better morning happens the night before. The foundation of the whole system is what Duane calls “Close the Dojo.” You wouldn't leave your school unlocked and messy overnight — don't leave your brain like that either. Energy is leadership plus systems — not luck. This isn't about hype, five-hour energy drinks, or forcing motivation. It's about building a simple system that helps you show up consistently. Less is more when you're overwhelmed.Allie shares the “restaurant rescue” idea: a huge menu makes everything worse. Fewer priorities done well beats a long list done halfway. You need at least one person in your corner.Duane and Allie talk about how they've supported each other through tough seasons. The takeaway: find one like-minded person you can call when you're stuck. Action Steps for School Owners Do the 7-day “Close the Dojo” challenge (5–10 minutes each night). Before bed, take a few minutes to “lock up” your day: Write tomorrow's #1 priority (the one thing that makes tomorrow a win) If you need more structure, add #2 and #3 (but not 27) Choose your first action for the morning so you can start without thinking Do a quick brain dump so you're not carrying open loops into the night Set up your morning to be smoother (remove friction).Duane's examples are simple but powerful: Put out your clothes Put your keys where they belong Prep the coffee Get the gym bag/shoes ready Try the bonus morning routine (before you touch your phone). For extra points, run these three steps before you check email or messages: Body first: move for 5 minutes, hydrate, warm up like you would before sparring Mind second: prayer, journaling, quiet time, reading — anything that puts your mind back on “centerline” Mission third: take one real action that moves your life and school forward (follow-ups, retention touch, staff conversation, parent communication, fixing a leaking system) If you're burnt out, look for the energy leak — then delete it.Duane and Allie both come back to this idea: some things simply aren't serving you anymore. If a system exists just to check a box, get rid of it. Additional Resources Mentioned Stephen/Franklin Covey time management system (mentioned by Allie) “Make Your Bed” (book referenced by Allie)
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Andrew to hear the real story behind building a martial arts studio that has survived for 31 years. We talk about the setbacks that shaped him first, from pursuing criminal justice and trying multiple times to become a police officer, to finally reaching a breaking point where he had to ask himself: What do I actually control, and what do I do next? That question changed everything. We dive into how Andrew built his business from the ground up, how his first student walked through the door, and how referrals, community relationships, and consistency helped grow the dojo over time. We also get honest about the difficult parts of entrepreneurship: rising rent, unexpected damage, insurance costs, emergencies, and the pressure that comes with trying to keep a business alive. One of the biggest conversations in this episode is about pricing and why so many business owners struggle to charge what they're worth. We talk about burnout, resentment, helping people long-term, and why undercharging can actually hurt both the business owner and the people they serve. We also touch on leadership, parenting, bullying prevention, accountability, empathy versus sympathy, and the lessons COVID taught business owners about emergency funds, systems, and adapting under pressure. If you're interested in martial arts, entrepreneurship, leadership, fitness, or building something that lasts, this conversation has a lot of value in it.Subscribe for more real conversations like this, and let me know in the comments: what's one area of your life you're ready to take accountability for next?Support the showLearn More at: www.Redefine-Fitness.com

Jason Cruz Rickson Gracie Jiujitsu "Pure Bred" Rooted in tradition, Jason's journey began at age seven training on wooden floors and makiwara boards. He earned a Traditional Karate Black Belt and is a Guro in both Pangamot and Lameco Filipino Martial Arts, which along with his experience in Jeet Kune Do served as the foundations for his striking style. A "purebred" Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Jason's lineage is unbroken from his first trial lesson with Master Rickson Gracie to receiving his black belt from the hands of the Master. A dedicated coach and elite training partner, he is now a sought after coach and has prepared fighters for Professional Competition and played a pivotal role in the first and most recent victory of a Gracie since the early days of UFC. Today he and his family run Bushido Mountain Dojo in Montana, where the mission of preserving art and spreading the way art Rickson Gracie Jiujitsu and Filipino Martial Arts is his focus. From Karate to Invisible Jiu-Jitsu: Etiquette, Discipline, and Teaching as Family Host Pete Deeley interviews Professor Jason about his martial arts journey from karate training at age seven on wood floors to Filipino martial arts and Jeet Kune Do with original Bruce Lee students, and how those experiences shaped his approach to jiu-jitsu. They compare earlier eras—when students "courted" instructors and etiquette was central—to today's more transactional gym culture. Jason describes building a dojo in Montana focused on respect, safety, and community, including white-gi preference, interviews and waiting lists, and treating students as family rather than customers. He recounts driving 80 miles each way for years to train in a Rickson Gracie lineage and shares how "invisible jiu-jitsu" applies off the mat as being a better teacher, husband, and dad. They discuss concepts like stripping away the useless, soft vision, "no technique," and a recent epiphany: "invisible timing," plus student transformations through breathing, kindness, and improved relationships. 00:00 Welcome and Setup 01:36 Early Karate Roots 03:00 Jeet Kune Do Era 05:16 Bruce Lee Philosophy 09:38 Efficiency and Focus 13:14 Invisible Jiu Jitsu 16:18 Building Dojo Culture 20:04 Coffee Shop to Dojo 22:28 Gi Color and Ego 22:57 Dojo Safety Culture 23:52 Dojo as Spiritual Practice 25:03 Chasing the Purest Jiu Jitsu 27:01 Earning Access and Commitment 28:40 Students Not Customers 29:25 Real Life Transformations 33:27 Invisible Timing Epiphany 37:36 Aikido and Mystical Rootedness 41:22 Etiquette and Beginner Mind 44:13 Mind Heart Respect Closing
He beat a brutal stretch of chemo, got the all-clear, then asked the question every craftsperson quietly fears: do the hands and the mind still work the same way? Our friend Ed Bareth is back, and he's turning that question into plastic, paint, and proof with a 1/32 Trumpeter Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless built for awards-level judging. We dig into what “national quality” really demands in large scale model aircraft building, where every shortcut shows and every improvement has to be clean. Ed walks us through his smart aftermarket picks and why they matter: Kelik 3D instrument panels for the cockpit, Eduard photo-etch dive brakes that live or die by build sequence, resin wheels, and One Man Army paint masks that look incredible but punish sloppy placement. He also shares how he's documenting the project in clear chapters so you can follow the full process from cockpit painting and washes to canopy masking and final finish. Then comes the part that spirals in the best and worst way: LED lighting inside an enclosed model airplane. What starts as “let's illuminate the cockpit” becomes a real engineering problem with battery placement, a hidden on off switch, and even a detour into Bluetooth and phone control before he brings it back to something dependable. Shiggi loves BJJ and thinks that it can build and change communities in Africa, and is on a mission to open a community dojo in Kenya aimed at empowering girls aged 12 to 18. Shiggi is a BJJ practioner with a background in Shotokan karate, Taekwondo, Capoeira, and working the door as a bouncer in UK night clubs. Her ambitious goal is to establish a community dojo in Kenya that not only teaches Jiu-Jitsu but also provides a safe space for girls to learn self-defense and life skills to counteract some of the societal issues affecting young girls in Africa, such as child marriages, domestic violence, and lack of educational opportunities. The community dojo will be situated in Kenya and serve as a retreat space where tourists can engage in Jiu-Jitsu camps and go on safaris to see lions, elephants and giraffes. Camp attendees will generate funds to support the dojo and its programs. This model not only benefits the local economy but also provides an enriching experience for visitors. The best place to get updates about the African community dojo is by signing up for Shiggi's Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/cw/JustShiggi Follow her martial and personal journey on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/the.ronin.storm/ and https://www.instagram.com/justshiggi Finally, follow Shiggi on YouTube as well: https://www.youtube.com/@justshiggi Thanks!
