2025 re-run bonus notes: This rerun is releasing on the precise 5yr anniversary of its original release - in other words, this celebration of St. John's 40th birthday, featuring his wife, both his kids, both his parents, and his brother is re-releasing on St. John's 45th birthday! Also, it is the second of a trilogy of music blocks (the first of which was last month's rerun), which, if not already clear to long-time listeners of the show will be explained in the intro to the third track of the trilogy, which will be our March 2025 rerun. So stay tuned til next month's rerun! DISCLAIMER 1: DEAD-NAME ALERT! August is not their birth name, and this episode was recorded prior to their self-discovery, so it uses their birth/dead name. Because of this, I checked with August prior to releasing it to make sure they were okay with it. They said they were okay with it so long as I included the disclaimer - which I would've done anyway! :-D DISCLAIMER 2: Apologies for some of the off-color jokes and references in the blooper reel. I was not as far along in my personal transformation at the point this episode was released. There are things that made this blooper that would not have today. Therefore, please consider it a piece of history rather than an accurate representation of current perspectives. DISCLAIMER 3: the production value was much worse back in 2020. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since. ----------------------------- Original (2020) Show Notes ----------------------------- Today's broadcast is C1E51 for Mishmash Monday, February 3rd, 2020. Buscabulla is a Puerto Rican indie duo formed by wife and husband Raquel Berrios and Luis Alfredo del Valle. Around 2018, Buscabulla was one of the most beloved Latinx bands in New York City. Raquel and Luis had just released their second EP and confirmed a performance in that year's Coachella music festival. Around this time of success, Raquel and Luis decided to move back to Puerto Rico. It was a significant life change, but one they were certain they wanted to make... as artists, and as new parents. In this segment of our "How I Made It" series, Raquel and Luis join us from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and they tell us about their debut album "Regresa." This episode originally aired in October 2020.

[To follow along with English subtitles, visit our new YouTube channel, "KEXP Podcasts." Learn more about this episode at www.kexp.org/podcasts/el-sonido/.] Support the show: http://kexp.org/elsonidoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's very special episode of Songmess we're talking to NYC's own reina of avant garde Latin experimentation, Xenia Rubinos. For over a decade, the Brooklyn-based Cuban-Puerto Rican artist has sculpted her own dizzying sound melding jazz, soul, rumba, and left-of-center references, becoming one of the city's most recognizable Latin indie stars alongside Buscabulla, Helado Negro and Ela Minus. Today's chat dives into Xenia's musical beginnings, her acclaimed 2021 album Una Rosa, her collage of inspirations ranging from drag queens to Rita Indiana, harnessing maximalism, composing for an experimental orchestra in Philadelphia, and more. We also examine the complexities of navigating indie spaces as a POC artist, and talk about her upcoming tour! We had a wonderful time with Xenia and the playlist absolutely pops off, so we hope you'll enjoy! Playlist: Xenia Rubinos, Turbo Sonidero, Kelman Duran, Arca.
Hey Talkhouse friends, this week we're re-surfacing an episode that originally ran in May of 2020. Unlike most Talkhouse Podcast episodes, which feature two or more creative folks in conversation, this one is mostly just one guy talking: Joe Talbot of the band IDLES. It was recorded in front of a live audience in Glasgow, just before the pandemic hit, and it's a fascinating look at an incredible artist—Talbot is a guy who's unafraid to put it all out there, in both interviews and in his music. Speaking of music, part of the reason we're re-promoting this episode this week is that Idles just released another incredible album: Crawler is the British band's fourth, and it's unsurprisingly being met with pretty ecstatic reviews. Check out this fascinating chat with Joe and a live audience, and have a great Thanksgiving. —Josh Modell ---- This week's show is a bit different from usual Talkhouse Podcast episodes. While it's nominally hosted by the legendary Alan McGee of Creation Records — the man who signed The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, and a lil ol' band called Oasis — it's not at all a two-person conversation. Instead, this episode features Joe Talbot, frontman of the incredible post-punk group IDLES, in one of the funniest, most viscerally honest live audience Q&A's I've ever witnessed. Both Joe and the attendees are willing to go to deep and often uncomfortable areas: Buckle up for a discussion of toxic masculinity, the role of violence in IDLES' music, and the difficult process of developing one's own artistic language. We also hear about Joe collabing with Mike Skinner of The Streets, turning Sleaford Mods' taunts into a song, putting human ashes into vinyl records, and... we even get an unexpected lesson on mindfulness. This Q&A was recorded at the wonderful Barras Art & Design in Glasgow. Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast, including upcoming talks like Helado Negro with Buscabulla, Julien Baker and Katie Harkin (Harkin, Sleater-Kinney), Black Belt Eagle Scout with Sasami, and Scott Avett (The Avett Brothers) with Eef Barzelay (Clem Snide). — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today's show was recorded in Glasgow by Nadar Shahzad of Blue Audio (thx Nadar!). Our co-producer is Mark Yoshizumi. Thanks so much to Matt Sadowski of Alt Waves Records and to Barras Art & Design for allowing us to share this event. The Talkhouse Podcast's theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
