On May 9, 2025, NBC's Dateline aired a two-hour special titled "The Terrible Night on King Road," delving into the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students and the case against Bryan Kohberger. The episode presented previously unreleased evidence, including surveillance footage of a white Hyundai Elantra—matching Kohberger's vehicle—circling the victims' residence multiple times on the night of the murders. Additionally, cell phone data indicated that Kohberger's device connected to a tower near the crime scene 23 times in the months leading up to the incident. Investigators also uncovered disturbing online activity on Kohberger's devices, such as searches related to serial killer Ted Bundy and nonconsensual pornography, as well as images of female students in swimsuits linked to the victims or their acquaintances. The special featured interviews with individuals who had interacted with Kohberger prior to the crimes. One former graduate student recounted a peculiar text message from Kohberger following a brief meeting at a pool party, describing the message as overly formal and unsettling. The program also included conversations with friends of the victims and experts in criminology and genetics, providing context and analysis of the case. As Kohberger awaits his trial, scheduled to begin in August 2025, the episode offered viewers a comprehensive overview of the investigation and the evidence amassed against him.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Searches and selfies: Idaho college murder suspect Bryan Kohberger's online habits emerge in new detailsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

The sources discuss the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which safeguards individuals against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. They explain that a search occurs when a reasonable expectation of privacy is violated, and a seizure involves meaningful interference with a person's possessory interests or freedom of movement. While a warrant based on probable cause is generally required, numerous exceptions to the warrant rule exist, such as exigent circumstances, consent, and searches incident to arrest. The exclusionary rule serves as the primary remedy for violations, rendering illegally obtained evidence inadmissible in court, though it too has several exceptions. The sources also highlight the evolving interpretation of the Fourth Amendment in light of advancing technology.Olmstead v. United States narrowly defined a search based on physical trespass, meaning wiretapping without physical intrusion was not a search. Katz v. United States broadened this, holding that a search occurs when the government violates a person's "reasonable expectation of privacy," shifting the focus from places to people.Justice Harlan's two-prong test states that a search occurs if (1) the individual exhibited a subjective expectation of privacy, and (2) society recognizes that expectation as objectively reasonable. Both prongs must be met for Fourth Amendment protections to apply.According to United States v. Mendenhall, a seizure of a person occurs when, by means of physical force or a show of authority, an individual's freedom of movement is restrained, and a reasonable person would believe they were not free to leave due to police conduct.A police officer may conduct a "Terry stop" and frisk when they have reasonable suspicion that criminal activity is afoot and that the individual is armed and dangerous. This limited pat-down is specifically for weapons to ensure officer safety. For a valid search warrant, it must be (1) based on probable cause, (2) supported by an oath or affirmation, and (3) particularly describe the place to be searched and the items or persons to be seized.Illinois v. Gates replaced the rigid two-pronged test from previous cases with a "totality-of-the-circumstances" approach for determining probable cause. This allows judges to consider all relevant factors, including the reliability of an informant's tip, in a more flexible manner. The "automobile exception" allows police to search a vehicle without a warrant if they have probable cause to believe it contains contraband or evidence of a crime. The rationale is based on the vehicle's inherent mobility, which makes obtaining a warrant impractical, and a reduced expectation of privacy in vehicles. The primary purpose of the exclusionary rule is to deter unlawful police conduct by making evidence obtained in violation of the Fourth Amendment generally inadmissible in criminal proceedings. Mapp v. Ohio extended this rule to the states. Two exceptions to the exclusionary rule are:Good Faith Exception: Evidence obtained by officers acting in reasonable reliance on a facially valid warrant, later found to be defective, may still be admitted if the officers acted in good faith.Inevitable Discovery: Evidence will not be excluded if the prosecution can demonstrate it would have been inevitably discovered through lawful means, regardless of the initial unlawful search.Riley v. California held that police generally need a warrant to search the digital contents of a cell phone seized incident to arrest, recognizing the vast amount of personal data on modern devices. Carpenter v. United States ruled that accessing historical cell site location information (CSLI) without a warrant violates the Fourth Amendment, reining in the third-party doctrine for comprehensive digital location data.

Bryan Kohberger: How We Got Here - Episode 4: "Digital Breadcrumbs and Desperate Searches" Description: December 2022 marked the turning point in the investigation as cutting-edge genetic genealogy worked behind the scenes while investigators made a crucial public appeal for information about a white Hyundai Elantra. This episode reveals how investigators used advanced cell phone tower analysis to identify patterns of surveillance, discovering that a suspect's phone had connected to towers near the victims' house 12 times over several months, always during nighttime hours. We explore the complex world of investigative genetic genealogy, the same technology used to solve the Golden State Killer case, and how it works by comparing crime scene DNA to genetic profiles voluntarily uploaded to genealogy websites. The episode details the massive search for white Hyundai Elantras across the Pacific Northwest, involving potentially 22,000 vehicles that needed investigation. We also examine how Bryan Kohberger was going about his normal life as a criminology PhD student just eight miles away, unaware that his vehicle had been identified by a WSU police officer during routine patrol, and how his phone mysteriously went silent during the exact time window when the murders occurred. On the night of Friday, October 23, 2015, 18-year-old Ebby Steppach attended a party in Little Rock, Arkansas. The following evening, she texted her stepfather and said she'd been sexually assaulted at the party and asked if he would go with her to the police. He said yes. But after that, she never contacted him again. Calls and texts from her family went unanswered until the next afternoon, when Ebby called her older brother. She was disoriented, thinking she was outside his house, even though she wasn't. Her family frantically reported her missing and began searching. Within a week, her car was found abandoned at a local park. But there was no sign of Ebby. Searches in and around that park continued for years with no answers. Then, two and a half years later, Ebby's body was found just 70 feet inside a drainage pipe that opened just feet from where her car had been left behind. Now, nearly a decade later, her family, friends, and the Little Rock Police Department are still searching for the person—or people—responsible for ending Ebby's life. On Friday, October 23, 2015, Ebby Steppach attended a party. Afterward, she told friends and family she had been sexually assaulted and may have been recorded without her consent. The following day, she planned to report the assault to police—but then, she disappeared. For nearly 24 hours, no one could reach her. Then, on Sunday, October 25, Ebby called her brother. She sounded disoriented and claimed she was outside his house, but she wasn't there. When he called her back, she said she was in her car—a silver Volkswagen Passat—but didn't know where she was. That call was the last time anyone in her family heard from her. Ebby's car was later found abandoned in Chalamont Park. Her phone, wallet, and contact lenses were still inside. But Ebby was nowhere to be found. In May 2018, Ebby's remains were recovered from a drainage pipe, just feet from where her car had been found. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.
