Playlist: Ralfi Pagan - Latin Soul; The Hi-Fly Orchestra - Mambo Atomico; The Hi-Fly Orchestra - Hi Fly Stomp; The Hi-Fly Orchestra - Mrs Shing a Ling; Joey Pastrana & His Orchestra - My Shingaling; Los Charly's Orchestra - My Barrio; Los Charly's Orchestra - Al Ritmo Del Latin Funk; Los Charly's Orchestra - Return To Spanish Harlem; Ray Barreto - New York Soul; Quantic & His Combo Barbaro - Linda Morena; Quantic - Mi Swing Es Tropical; The Quantic Soul Orchestra - She Said What?; The TnT Boys - Musica Del Alma.

What is it about some songs that make them stick in your head like epoxy? This one isn't even really a song, it's just a riff (I guess in this it shares that distinction with an earlier SUNNY SONGS episode, Archie Bell's “Tighten Up”), and, it's also got that spoken shout out: “Hey Leroy! Your mama… she callin' you, man!” Then the cackling laughter, and the bursting into a driving, urgent Latin Soul chant “Go to your mama”, (led by a skittering, syncopated cowbell). It's just infectious wonderfulness, which culminates in Jimmy's signature sax, bringing us on home as the record fades out. As kids, we would tease each other with the “Leroy” line, and have a fine time, running across streets and yards, madly dashing after each other: “Hey, Leroy! Your mama… She MAD, man!” 56 years later, while compiling a list of songs that make me feel instantly good, this one came scampering back, unbidden, from deep down the recesses of my befuddled brain to make the roster. Jimmy Castor started off his career in the doo-wop group, FRANKIE LYMON AND THE TEENAGERS. The difference was that Jimmy was not simply a harmonizer, he was a writer, a self-generating machine of catchy content, so, inevitably, he stepped up to the front of his own outfit, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and released a raft of memorable material to the world - perhaps most notably “Troglodyte”, a national Funk hit in the 70s, making it to number 6 in the charts. You might remember its chant: “Gotta Get a Woman, Gotta Get a woman…” I don't know what it is about this record, but could it be - (and, this might be a stretch) - that there is a little bit of “Leroy” in all of us: we all have mothers, and we all go through that period when were pushing away, but still a bit tied to the apron strings? Well… no need to overthink it. It's just a riff, after all.

I Like It Like That.

In part II of my 4 part show about ‘La Guarachera‘ Celia Cruz we will talk about Celia's life and work in the 60's, an often overlooked yet important part of her life. After Celia left Cuba on July 15, 1960, she and La Sonora went to Mexico where they encountered a booming market for Afro-Cuban music. A year later, Celia left to the LA Palladium and soon after traveled to New York where she settled with Pedro Knight, who she was now dating. Sadly in early April of 1962, Celia's mother, who was still in Cuba, battling cancer, died. Celia was devastated. Later that day she had an engagement at the Puerto Rico Theater and she recalled crying behind the curtains between sets. Even through this difficult time, there were good moments, soon after, Celia was the first Latina to perfrom at Carnegie Hall and on July 14 of that year, she married Pedro Knight. In 1965, Celia left La Sonora, she had ended her contract with Seeco Records, which meant she couldn't contniue to work with them. WHen they heard she was leaving, some of the band members even cried. In 1965, Celia released her first album with Tito Puente, now signed with Morris Levy's Tico. In all the duo recorded 8 albums, unfortunately none were big hits. Celia's career wasn't doing so well, the youth craved the sounds of Latin Soul and Boogaloo, dismissing Celia and Tito as “their parents music“. The late 60's and early 70's weren't easy and she mostly worked in Mexico where she still had many fans. La Lupe was a legendary Afro-Cuban singer who was once known as the “Queen of Latin Soul.” She was one of the top performers in Havana cabarets amid the Cuban Revolution and became a legendary figure in New York after fleeing Cuba. She worked with some of Latin music's biggest names, including Tito Puente, and was known for explosive boleros like “Qué Te Pedí” and “La Tirana.” By the mid-1970s, Lupe's label was acquired by Fania Records and she was pushed aside. She earned the reputation of being difficult to manage and there were rumors that she was a drug abuser, even though her family and friends have consistently denied these claims. Changing tastes in Latin music coupled with her strained reputation led her career to decline by the 80s. This episode of Latino USA is part of our Genias in Music series, remembering notable women and their contributions to their fields throughout history. We question some of the myths about La Lupe that attempted to delegitimize her music and look at how her identity as an Afrolatina influenced the racist and sexist characterizations of her as “possessed,” “crazy” and “on drugs.” But by singing and moving in the ways she was known for, she was resisting her erasure and claiming her space –– whether audiences understood it or not.

We look at a black and white photograph that encapsulates a very American story— about the magic that can happen when you throw together people from different backgrounds and languages and… beats. The concoction that resulted is known as Latin Boogaloo. Eduardo Díaz, director of the Smithsonian Latino Center, explains how one of the genre’s pioneers, Joe Bataan, got his degree in ‘streetology’ and went on to establish himself as the King of Latin Soul. See the photo we discuss on our website: https://npg.si.edu/podcasts/joe-bataan

The Gentlemen return with an exploration of Latin Soul with their guest, band leader Steven Salcedo. They discuss the origins of the term, its beginnings in Boogaloo, and how its influence can be heard in Salsa, Freestyle, 80s and 90s R&B Pop and more. Julian does his best to sound like he knows what he's talking about, and BSKi and Steven take easy on him until the very end. You can listen to accompanying playlist on Spotify here.

Lester Rey's journey from playing congas in his family's Humboldt Park church to becoming a producer and vocalist all over the country is one that's very Chicago, very Puerto Rico but most importantly very Lester Rey. His new EP is called "Santuario," and it's just in time to usher us into Spring and Summer on a tide of dreamy beats and introspective lyrics. The EP is a deeply personal project that finds the "Latin Soul" singer and songwriter in search of a sanctuary as he addresses pain and trauma of the past and re-examines his previously held beliefs. Lester spoke with Jill Hopkins about the project and its themes. For more info about Lester Rey, visit: https://www.lesterrey.com
Bienvenidos a La Hora Faniática.

Eddie Palmieri - African Twist.Ray Barreto - El Watusi.
I have been waiting so long to get to this set because it is such an extension of myself. Going back to my roots and truly, this is what I play when I am just hanging out and wanting to listen to cool grooves. At that perfect tempo that makes my hips swing when I'm anywhere. The Latin party in me totally comes across, but when you are raised in Brooklyn, you are also surrounded by so many variations of Latin styled dance music as well as some great soul vocals. New York is truly a melting pot. If I could invite you all to a house party at my place right now, this is what would come on. Just enough energy to make you feel welcome, sophisticated and happy. Where you want to grab somebody's hand to finish the moves with you. I hope you all enjoy this. As well, I just made my selection purely as a DJ. No special mash-ups necessary. These are tracks that are some of my favorites that I have collected or purchased. I love music, whether I am the one that is making the songs or not. It's how you play it that gives me my style and I feel it. As I provide the track listing, you too can purchase any one of these tracks on Beatport. Enjoy and everyone please don't forget to subscribe and support dance music. Joe Bataan at the Bayanihan Center on June 23, 2011 Bataan Nitollano was born in 1942, and grew up in Spanish Harlem, New York. In that time this Afro-Filipino hustled the streets, got caught up with the law, and did 5 years behind bars. When he came back out, he needed to find something new to survive. Stealing coats and cars wasn't going to cut it. According to Bataan to make it in the world as a man of color, you could either be an athlete, or an entertainer–standing at 5-foot-9 Bataan wasn't going to get into basketball anytime soon. So, Bataan put himself to work after those five years of learning music behind bars. Starting up by singing in hallways and gathering members for a band, Joe began a long love affair with music. It was a gig where a business man misread a note to call either “Joe, Bataan,” the businessman went asking for Joe Bataan instead, and the new name gave Bataan a new lease on life, he says. Joe continues an illustrious career as the King of Latin Soul, has built and exited record labels, and has reinvented himself in his “twilight” years. APEX contributor catches up with Joe Bataan at the Bayanihan Center last week, and just talks about being that “Ordinary Guy.” With Host RJ. The clave can guide you through the many descendants of the African music: Gospel, Soul, RandB, Blues, Jazz, Reggae. Clave rhythm is the basis of Afro-Latin musical styles and is considered the key, the identity, the root, and the "soul" of the music. It is the temporal key, the main organizing principle, to which every element of arrangement and improvisation in the music must be aligned.
